Overall this was an OK experience. For fried chicken my experience here wasn't bad however it didn't necessarily leave me eager to return too soon. This was a take-out order however my drive home was not long at all and upon arriving home I was a bit disappointed that the chicken didn't seem as fresh and moist as I would have liked it to be. You can take a look at the pictures to see what I mean. The chicken looks like it was cooked and sat for a while prior it being given to me. If you are a fried chicken lover you know that fried chicken has quite a respectable shelf life after it has been cooked, so even though it wasn't ideal it still was edible. I'm thinking perhaps this was an off day for this place however fried chicken is one of those dishes that normally restaurants are consistent with if they specialize in fried chicken. I wouldn't turn down another opportunity to eat here and if I am in the area again I certainly will. Given them a try. read more

The chicken is SO good! And the rolls are addictive (and I don't even DO rolls!) And the kale blue cheese slaw is worth a trip all on its own!!! WHOA! The reason they don't get 5 stars is the service. We walked in and stood at the register for a few minutes before anyone even acknowledged us. The staff is super young and was just hanging out and mingling with one another rather than actually working. It just makes the entire establishment look unprofessional. If you get it fresh and eat it hot, it is absolutely delicious. The fried chicken, original or spicy is like no other fried chicken I have ever had. crispy from the sweet and or spicy dry spice and very moist (wayyyy better than the honey dipped which comes across as a bit soggy) A unique take to say the least. The honeymoon chicken sandwich was also very very good, but quie messy so grab extra napkins and dig in. the chicken in the sandwich was crispy and also very moist, and the slaw is a nice balance and well made. John is a great manager and the staff were helpful and very nice. Place is clean including the bathrooms. I will be back every time i venture into Petworth. Only thing I would change is really put a good toast on that bun to hold up to the slaw and not fall apart. You could smell the chicken from outside. They also have indoor seating. We were told that we could sit at an empty table. You start your order by scanning the bar code on the table but feel free to order paper menus because they have them. "Finger licking good!"  Oops!  Sorry...wrong fried chicken joint but, the same slogan applies.   Crispy, fried chicken is the main attraction at this yardbird joint off the corner of GA Ave & Upshur St. NW DC. This place is legit by all regards from the main dish...."FRIED CHICKEN"..... to the delicious sides!  Honeymoon Chicken has a unique spin on this american classic that can be cooked in many ways, techniques, & seasonings. Now I must admit, I consider myself a "Fried Chickenologist" and definitely know good yardbird when I see. You can't pass this dish pass me without scrutiny. Been there, tried and ate them all....around the DMV....heck, the globe!   If you think fried chicken is a no fail type of dish, then you sadly mistaken.   RULE OF THUMB:  Great fried chicken must meet ALL three main requirements:  1) Crispy on the outside with a crunchy crust, 2) Juicy-moist on the inside, never soggy or greasy and 3) Cooked fully (no pink) and seasoned to the bone.  I'm talking....So seasoned, it will make you chew the bone to the grizzle....lol.   Anyone, that knows their fried chicken...know what I'm talking about here and....knows this is the bar!   ANNNDDD, my pet-peeve above them all, please do not serve "dry-A$$" breast!  I can't stand that! lol At any rate, I digress. Back to the review. A lot of places miss the mark...but Honeymoon, most definitely did not!!   Honeymoon actually surpassed this, with an extra kick of spiciness and flavor in the spicy version I tried!  The heat and red-pepper was there, but very lightly. I would almost consider it mild, with a slight kick and not overpowering...and ooh so good!  I ordered two (2) --two-piece specials (one dark meat & the other white) with a side of Honey-dipped Brussel Sprouts & a really good Cole slaw! Everything was a thumbs up!  The chicken came piping hot and ever-so juicy.  The golden color alone had me drooling.  I couldn't wait to dive in.  At first bite, the chicken was seasoned and so flavorful. I can tell the cooking technique was pressure cooked and deep-fried method. The skin crackles under each bite. It's crispy and the meat is tenderly moist!  The 2 piece dark meat, my favorite preference for fried chicken, was 'HELLALICIOUS' and so good. For breast or white-meat lovers, you can't go wrong here either! Even the huge plump "turkey-sized" breast meat that I was served, was cooked perfect, moist and not dry. The sides were no punk either.  The Brussel Sprouts, although a little greasy-oily, had lots of flavor and were really good.  The coleslaw was great too.  It was very fresh, crunchy and had a bit of tangy bite & sweetness to it.  Definitely, a winner! In all, I am definitely a fan and will be back.  The service was fast and the staff was so friendly.... From the host that greeted me to the the guy that prep my food. The vibe of the place is really cool and takes on a retro-diner feel. There is a bar that overlooks the kitchen that is fully visible to all the cooks prepping the orders. The cooks handled the food with care and cleanliness. On to the food! We ordered a strawberry pineapple lemonade and a Honeymoon Arnold Palmer. The lemonade is freshly squeezed! Both flavors are delicious. Before talking about the main courses, the sides were FIRE. We got honey dipped Brussel sprouts and honey butter dinner rolls. The rolls are amazing. I would gain so much weight from eating them, I had to stop. The Brussel sprouts were delicious. Such an interesting flavor for veggies. It was suiting. I got the Honey hot dipped chicken sandwich. Now the sandwich was good but I had remorse after seeing my friend's 4pc chicken dinner. However! the sandwich was still good if I had a taste for it. The plain chicken is fried and seasoned so well. Just mouth watering. The only thing I would say is I didn't really taste the hot part of the honey hot, but it was still good. Very tender nice portion of chicken the sandwich with a sweet and soft brioche bun. Highly recommend both the hot honey and classic honeymoon. Hot honey is not spicy and very light heat. Buns: Do not skip these wonderful bites with honey butter and light sea salt. Comes in a size of 6 or 1 but they heat up nice as a leftover. Mashed Potatoes: Would order again and compliments the sandwich well and gravy was just enough. Brussels Sprouts: Worth a try with the light honey sauce. I was intrigued by the design and color palette of this diner-esque space complete with barstools near the chicken action and booths along the window. Let's start with the delicious honey butter rolls. Delicious. I opted for the crispy chicken bites which were perfectly cooked. The staff were extremely friendly and allowed me to try a variety of sauce options. My favorites were ranch and mumbo. The mac and cheese was a perfect complement to this meal. I ventured up the Georgia Ave to give this potential Bib Gourmand recipient a try. I was not disappointed. In a time when fried chicken sandwiches are about as common as Metro delays, Honeymoon stands tall above the rest (see my profile for the other chicken king of the DMV) I got the hot honey dipped chicken sandwich with wedge fries. Not only is the chicken juicy and flavorful, but the quality of the bread matches that of the chicken. For someone who loves spicy chicken sandwiches, the hot honey did a wonderful job of adding another dimension to the sandwich. The wedge fries were perfectly crispy with a great seasoning as well. It may be a good idea to order ahead, but the wait to eat at the counter on a Saturday evening wasn't bad. I can't speak to getting a booth though. If you can't make it up the that location, the restaurant group that owns honeymoon opened a satellite kitchen called Ensemble. Located in downtown Bethesda, they serve honeymoon along with a number of other restaurants. I tried it last week and it was nearly as good! read more

We ordered takeout for the first time tonight and glad we did on multiple fronts, one given that it was packed out and two we are slowly devouring a delicious spread of food. We ordered three jumbo wings and the seafood platter with flounder and shrimp. We also got macaroni, Brussels, and potato wedges as sides. And I think we picked almost every sauce too! Everything is delicious! Everything is perfectly breaded and not soggy at all. The Brussels have a unique taste and the macaroni is already gone as our two year old devoured it immediately. Comeback sauce is yummy and is reminiscent of another sauce we can't quite place. Bold move creating their own mumbo sauce which did not disappoint! So happy they are in DC! read more

3.5 stars max! So let's start off a positive note -- first, I'm glad that something finally opened up in the old Slim's Diner location. It's a tricky spot because it's not the easiest to get to on foot, and yet there's minimal parking available nearby. Also, the interior footprint of the building itself is very small. Uncomfortably so! But this place made a better used of the limited space than the previous occupant did. There are a handful of booths, a handful of tables, and most plentifully bar stool seating snaking around the entire room. Everything seemed well-organized and clean. So props for that! Also, the staff all seemed nice and professional, though the owner/manager(?) himself seemed a little gruff at times. And the prices and the wait time for carryout were fine, too. So off to a good start there, as well! But onto the things that need improvement -- well, ummmm, ... the food! I didn't think it was that great, tbh. The chicken (I got the original) was just "ok." Not terrible. But nothing to write home about at all! If you ever went to a Southern grandmother's house for Sunday dinner like ever -- especially if that grandmother was called "MawMaw" or "Big Momma" or "Madea" or something like that -- then you have had way, waaaaaaaaaaaay better fried chicken that this. And all the gratuitous honey dropped all over everything, from the rolls to the brussel sprouts, seem more of a gimmick than a true nod to elevated cuisine. I wasn't impressed. Am I glad I tried this place? Yes! But it's clear to me that they honeymoon is over. What a fun, cute, diner-like restaurant with DELICIOUS food! I work in the neighborhood, so I've been eyeing honeymoon for a while and finally went and they did not disappoint. My partner and I sat at the bar and the staff were so nice. It was pretty crowded, for they have limited seating inside, so I recommend getting there a little early for dinner. My partner got the mushroom chicken sandwich because they are a vegetarian and they described it as mouth wateringly good! I got their 3 piece set which comes with 2 buns. The buns are some of the best I've ever had- buttery, salty, sweet, soft. They also held up. I saved one for the next day and about 5 seconds in the microwave turned them new. Stumbled upon this pace while attending the community music fair and had excellent chicken wings. They were The real deal wings. It came with a roll z smothered in a honey sauce. Wife had chicken nuggets and they we equally good. I saw several other dishes that looked good too - chicken and waffles but we were just having a snack to tide us over until dinner. The service was very friendly even on this very busy day. The line was out the door (literally). The place is pretty small but the outside seating adds a lot of space.
