I don't think they get the hype they truly deserve. This spot has the BEST roast duck I've ever had, and trust me, I've had my fair share all over the Bay Area. We opted for a 3 item bbq plate - roast duck, roast pork and bbq pork (char siu). The bbq pork was fine, nothing special but the highlight was the roast duck and pork. The skin on the duck is still crispy, and had a good ratio of fat to meat and bones. Some places make it with a strong star anise flavor, but HKB does not. The flavor on the duck is sooo good and not too salty. The roast pork was juicy and the skin super crunchy! They gave a solid portion too. I'd spend my $20 on this any day! The 2 item and 3 item bbq options are on a separate lunch menu, but I'm not sure if it's offered daily or just weekdays. The rice plates come with some steamed chinese broccoli and a big scoop of rice. They also provide the bbq with a little dipping sauce. It pairs well with the greens, but is a tad bit salty so use sparingly. We also ordered beef chow fun, dry style. The beef slices are tender, the chow fun has that good wok hei flavor, nice and smoky. I do wish the noodles were a tad bit wider but overall, very solid dish. Sesame balls look/taste like the pre made frozen kind. It had a good chew, solid red bean filling and you get a ton for $5. The service here is nice and friendly. They give you giant cups of water and will check on you to refill it as well. It's in a plaza, lots of shared parking spaces and they do take CC for payment. I am devastated that my now favorite HK BBQ is not in California, but if anyone asks me where to eat in Denver, this spot is going to be my #1 recommendation. read more

Really authentic Hong Kong food. Was most excited about the pan fried noodles and they did not disappoint. Perfect combo of crispy and saucy, with loads of veggies and seafood. Best to be eaten right away otherwise it gets soggy. The restroom is clean and the restaurant is too. No frills, simple decor but definitely has the best HK dishes in Denver. We were missing Asian food during this trip to Colorado and we were going to get dim sum in this plaza but the line was too long. We walked and saw this and I'm so glad we ordered here. It's one of the top Cantonese spots for me for sure. You can tell everything is handmade and our waitress spoke Mandarin, Cantonese and English. At one point in time, she was having a conversation with all three languages with our group. It was clean and neat inside. If you pay cash, you get a discount. They made the zongzi in house and the staff was proud to tell me all about it and told me to come back to try more dishes. I loved my salty fish fried rice, the fish pieces were so flavorful and yummy. The servings are huge for the price point. We all enjoyed our food and I wish I lived closer to come here more often. Wowza! I ended up at Hong Kong BBQ with a friend a few weeks ago, after waiting unsuccessfully to get into Lao Wang Noodle House before it closed. So that said, we came close to closing, were freezing, and too hungry to think straight. We ordered a bunch of items from the menu, and the food started rolling in quickly. The Roast Duck (half) kicked things off; it was moist and delicious, albeit a little hard to navigate with plastic chopsticks, but this was not the time for such formalities--we were ravenous. Next came the Gai Lan with Garlic. While simple, it was exceptionally flavorful. Tons of great garlic sauce that we practically lapped up. That said the Yushan Eggplant with Pork was the hands down favorite of the evening. We could not get enough of it, and it featured some springy wood ear mushrooms which provided a great textural contrast with the silky eggplant. Finally, we capped things off with the Salt & Pepper Shrimp. They were nicely crisped and well seasoned. I think next time I would opt for the squid or fish instead; the shrimp was great, but I can't stomach too many shell-on shrimp. It was a veritable feast, and we had lots of leftovers to take home. The restaurant wa in a strip mall on South Federal and there was plenty of parking.s By the time we arrived, they only had BBQ duck and White Steamed chicken in the barbecue section, so we got one plate of the white cut up chicken and a plate of the beef with ginger and scallions. The food was really good, but the beef dish was very salty. The staff was nice and friendly. As someone that is deprived of good chinese food, I am always in the search for a solid restaurant that serves authentic Chinese dishes. I initially went to HK BBQ to pick up some cha siu but decided to try their actually Chinese dishes. (I still did togo some Cha Siu, but a good practice is to call prior because they have limited availability and the times they are ready can be different. Also, their Cha Siu is pretty solid. It is on the sweeter side than what I am used to but the carmelization glistens the pork and with a nice hot bowl of fresh cooked rice and with some steamed bokchoi.. I am drooling thinking about it) Going back to the new dishes I tried 1. Twice cooked pork is a dish that I often seek every time I visit California and I think I found something comparable. The pork is perfectly cooked and with the combination of the veggies and the black bean sauce- it makes you want to get a second or third serving of rice to consume more. There is a korean saying, it's a rice theif (밥 도둑) which ultimately means its so good that you eat so much rice, it's like you're a rice their. I will definitely return for more of this dish 2. Green beans with xo sauce is always a solid veggie dish you can get in many Chinese restaurants. I will say compared to some of the green bean dishes in some Chinese restaurants in Colorado, it isn't as oily, which I like. 3. Salted fish clay pot with egg plant and chicken This dish was slightly underwhelming because I couldn't really taste the salted fish. But outside of that, it is still good. I believe Hong Kong Barbecue is under new ownership. The restaurant as a whole looks very different from the last time I dined in - which was a while ago. The menu was smaller than the previous owners but each item we ordered was delicious. There's this term Chinese people used called "wok-hei" and when you take a bite out of the noodles or the beef dishes, you can taste it like the breath of a wok. It's this flavor that's unexplainable but when you taste it, you'll know what I mean. We came on a Thursday night so maybe things are not as in stock as the weekends. The beef dish that we ordered said it would be in a clay pot but that was not the case. The only bbq dish available was the roast duck. They were out of the chicken, bbq pork, and roast pork by 6pm. This is by far the best Chinese restaurant in the Westwood/Lakewood area. This restaurant situated in a small shopping strip looks unassuming. Inside the restaurant has over 10 4 person tables. We arrived between the lunch and dinner service when the chef and staff were eating dinner. They were very kind and asked if we could come back. We stepped out and the hostess came outside and said we could get served. They were so gracious with us. We ordered the garlic green beans (not on the menu) roasted pork belly and some noodles. So this was my second time coming here. The first was when I had my parents come visit and we wanted some roast pork and duck. Those were delicious. This time around, I ordered the Wonnton Soup, Dry Style Beef Chao Fun, and Sesame Balls. Amazing. Tastes just as authentic as home cooking. I enjoy the taste of each dish. Only complaint would be the Chao Fun was a bit saltier than I would like it and the Sesame Balls were more chewy than usual. Price could be a bit more lenient, but for the quality of food, I think its worth it. Overall, great place to get your chinese cuisine fix. I had been thinking about trying Peking Duck after hearing several people talk about what a delight it is. My husband and I live in a small southwestern town and there are little choices when it comes to specialty dishes like this. So when we were coming to Denver for a concert, we decided to look up where good Peking duck is served. A couple of spots jumped out with high reviews. One was Star Cafe, which I had pretty much settled on. But upon further research, the Hong Kong BBQ got higher reviews/marks. So, we decided that is the place we would go. It's located in an Asian area of southwest Denver, in a simple strip center with other businesses. Interesting fact: The Star Cafe was literally right around the corner of this strip center. I guess we could have gone to both to see which we liked better lol I had called a few days before to find out if we needed to reserve a duck for us, and the very friendly, exuberant, happy lady that answered the phone said there was no need to order ahead....to just come in and tell them what we wanted and they would have more than enough. I had read other reviews say that it can be a little off-putting....dirty fingerprints on the front door, cigarette butts littering the sidewalk outside, and a greasy film on the tables. NONE OF THIS WAS TRUE! It is a small establishment, very understated, but very clean. The server was quick to wait on us. We ordered the crispy cheese wontons and a half duck, for the two of us...Cokes to drink. Let me just say....the wontons were delicious and crispy, with a sweet mayo-type sauce to dip it in. And very flavorful. But the duck!!?? Exquisite! The skin was nice and crispy, the meat was moist and juicy. They were served with bao....little fluffy pancake type breads to make a duck sandwich out of. I've heard since then that restaurants usually serve Peking duck with a thin papery crepe-like wrap, that you can fold into a pocket or rolled like a tortilla after assembling. Speaking of assembling, the duck comes with a hoisin sauce and strips of sliced green onion. I'd like to try it again with the thinner crepes....the thickness and texture of the bao wasn't as satisfying. We ended up just eating the duck and the onions and the sauce. And it was delicious. So don't hesitate to go here. Everyone was so nice there...including the bubbly woman that had answered the phone. You can tell she loves what she does and loves people! read more

How is there not a line out of the door for this place? I came here once before and it was good. However, tonight's experience was INCREDIBLE! You wait a bit for the food (which the waitress told me to set the expectation) and I'm good waiting for quality food. They don't just prepare some meats ahead of time and then quickly reheat when it's ordered. This is a make-to-order place and you will taste the difference. Lady at the counter was cool as hell too she sees that I'm taking it to go so she cuts the corner off the boxes so it doesn't steam while we are driving. I was told there is a new owner here and my parents were a little apprehensive about it, but I still heard great things about this place so we decided to try it. My favorite thing was the wok hei in the dishes. That smoky flavor in my stir fry was so prominent in the dishes we ordered compared to any other place I've been to, which is amazing. Don't know how they did that but it's amazing. I still got my favorite beef noodles and we ordered a sizzling plate dish but it didn't come with a sizzling plate. Their steamed chicken with yummy ginger sauce and salt and pepper fish were delicious. The eggplant with pork had a perfect balance of heat and savory; the serving size of the pea pots with garlic was generous; and the flavorful chicken clay pot came out piping hot.
