    House Special Combo July 2025
    Loren P.

What an asset to the otherwise dearth of Chinese cuisines in gold country!! Hong Kong Inn is fantastic restaurant in the tiny downtown area of San Andreas. Parking is limited in the small lot that Hong Kong Inn shares with Subway and a few other stores, but we were able to find a spot pretty easily. However, we also visited on a weekday. While the exterior is unassuming, the interior of the restaurant is clean and tidy, with refreshingly-cold AC blowing. As it was our first time checking out their food, my husband and I both went for the house special lunch combos. Please note that these are different from the lunch/dinner specials that they have on their main menu. The lunch/dinner combos are printed on a separate piece of paper in a sheet protector. I went with the shrimp with hot garlic sauce and my husband went with the Mongolian beef. We both chose hot and sour soup. Our soups arrived to the table really quickly, and steaming hot. The flavors were on point and well-balanced. I quickly devoured my bowl. In what felt like under 10 minutes, our lunch combos had arrived to our table! Boy was I pleasantly surprised by how bouncy and flavorful my chow mein was. I've had my fair share of only decently-flavorful chow mein, but Hong Kong Inn's chow mein is super garlicky, which I love. The fried rice was simple but well done, and my shrimp was juicy and not overcooked. I had a taste of my husband's Mongolian beef and it was just as I was expecting. The egg roll was basic but crunchy and very hot, and came with the classic red sweet & sour dipping sauce. Our servers were super attentive and made sure to keep our waters filled, and also asked how our food tasted. I listened to the staff speak with each other and it seems like a variant of Canto, so I was able to pick apart some of what they were saying as well, but it's not a dialect I'm fully familiar with. Our plates were stuffed to the brim, and obviously we had leftovers for another day. I truly was not expecting such good Chinese food in San Andreas, but on the other hand, that would make sense based on the history of California's gold country. We are definitely going to be back to try other dishes that Hong Kong Inn has to offer!

General Tso Chicken, Egg Fried Rice, Egg Roll Grilled Thai peppers, tiny cup of sweet and sour, soy sauce packet, Ottogi Hot Mustard.

I ordered the General Tso (General Zod) Chicken. By far the best chicken dish I have ever had from any Chinese Restaurant. Including any place in Monterey or San Francisco. The service was fantastic and my order was ready when they said it would be (20 minute). The atmosphere is a bit noisy with some local loud talkers, but hey... that's why I got it to go.

This is the best Chinese food in the nearby three counties. Everything is homemade and after three visits, we haven't had a dish we don't like! Open 7 days a week, food and sauces ALL from scratch, friendly owners/staff, clean & bright restaurant, and delicious food. LOVE that they offer DINNER combos instead of only lunch!! I love being able to get a perfect portion and sampling of rice, noodles, entree, egg roll & soup without having to buy them all separately! We will gladly drive here first from Murphys before anywhere else. We don't get that gross over-stuffed and bloated food coma feeling after this Chinese food either. The honey walnut prawns is the best we've ever had from any Chinese restaurant. Lightly sweet and crunchy with a hint of orange slices added amazing flavor. We ate them all in the car before we got home! Thank you Hong Kong Inn for your wonderful service dine-in or to-go and always making our kids feel welcome!

We came in for lunch. It wasn't crowded when we got here but filled up quickly with regulars. We both ordered a lunch special, we liked that you can choose which soup you'd like, either egg flower hot and sour. Of course we chose hot and sour, it was delicious!. My sweet and sour shrimp was very good it came with an egg roll and some egg fried rice. My daughter had the General chicken which was excellent, very flavorful. We enjoyed our lunches and the service was great. The portions are on the smaller side comparably but still good. We'll be back.

Treated my friend who was here helping me to lunch from the new Hong Kong Inn, 314 E Saint Charles St #1 here in San Andreas. Had read so many posts on a local Facebook group from people raving about the place. We will be ordering there again!! They give you so MUCH food. This is just one item we got, and its literally enough food for 2-3 days! My friend picked the order up and she said the place is so CLEAN!

    Kung Pao Chicken

Yummy. Very large portions. my Sissy brought Cashew chicken dinner home for my mom and I had Kung Pao Chicken. There was so much it lasted for two meals.

I mean this is what we come to Chinese restaurants for! Ooey gooey slurp worthy noodles, delicious chicken, delectable and crunchy veggies. Prices are low atleast when compared to the formidable bayarea prices. They have lunch specials as well which is what we went for. They come with soup, entree, carb: half and half noodles +rice or just noodles/rice. They had a hot and sour soup and I downed almost two bowls of it as the kids refused to have theirs. I enjoyed the bits of tofu in it. For my lunch entree I picked the house special chicken. And man was I in for a treat. It was thinly cut strips of chicken in an addictive sauce with jalapeños in it. I savored every bit of my meal. I sampled my family's string bean chicken and garlic chicken as well. The beans were crisp yet cooked through, just amazing!! The garlic chicken was delicious as well but came with a lot of large zucchini pieces.

We've done both take out as will as dine in and have good experiences both times, although they definitely seem to do a larger volume of takeout orders. The inside dining has not been busy either time we were there, even on a holiday weekend. It could have to do with the fact it's not directly on the mainstreet, but it is a quick drive. The inside space would be good for groups as well and also kids. The menu is a mix of chinese and vietnamese cuisine, with some added outlier beverages like boba tea and smoothies. There are vegetarian appetizers as well as entrees. The prices are reasonable for the portion size. We tried the tofu spring rolls to start, and for our entrees we had the Tofu Pho and Szechuan Vegetables. The spring roles were tasty and came with a delicious peanut sauce. The entrees came out piping hot, and they gave us the standard add ons for Pho and had sriracha, hoisin, soy sauce and chili oil to add as well. The Szechuan vegetables had a good portion and came with white rice. Lots of broccoli, snow peas, zucchini and onions. The staff is very friendly and also funny, definitely one of the things we like about coming here. A great option in Murphys and we'd happily come back in the future.

Sometimes it's funny, sometimes it's pithy, sometimes it's out of curiosity, but usually it's in the context of "who would come to Valley Springs to find good Chinese food?" Well, recently we were returning from yet another trip in the Sierras and were kind of hangry, so we decided to settle it once and for all, and give Good Friend a try. We arrived relatively late - it was only 7:30pm, but they close at 8:30pm, so their dinner rush was well past and they were winding down. This is important. Throughout our meal, the staff could not have been friendlier or more efficient. They were not annoyingly so, but they didn't miss a beat. The food in the buffet stations was starting to run out. The sushi selection had dwindled down from what was probably a much larger offering, although what remained still looked pretty fresh, not old and tired, and in fact, the few pieces we had were much better than typical Chinese buffet sushi. (I know that sounds like faint praise, but the sushi was actually decent.) The green mussels that were next to the sushi did look a little dry around the edges so we gave those a pass, but in fairness, mussels start to look that way pretty quickly, so they may not have been out very long. The hot and sour soup was much better than expected. If I hadn't crammed so much food into my pie hole already, I would have had another bowl of it. It does seem kind of weird to eat a Chinese soup with a Western soup spoon, but when in Rome, I guess. Also surprisingly good was the beef & broccoli, jalapeno pork, and the ribs, keeping in mind again that it was close to closing time and most of the ribs in the tray didn't look that great, but I managed to find enough that were meaty and moist to satisfy my jones for them. Next time - and there will probably be a next time - I'll pass on the stuff that is battered and fried: chicken, frog legs, tempura-style veggies. The battering was soft, not crisp. I don't know if that's because they'd been sitting and cooling in the steam table or if it's the batter mix. They weren't bad, just not how I like my fried stuff. The fried chicken actually tasted pretty good other than the soft coating, but I was reminded after eating the frog leg that frog's legs don't excite me to eat as much as the idea of eating frog's legs. Too much work for too little payback, and frog's legs can sometimes taste a little fishy. That's ok if you're eating fish, but when the meat is more like chicken, fishy taste is just odd. There were a few items that, earlier in dinner service, were probably much better. The dry fried string beans (labelled as "sauteed string beans") were really in need of replacing although we managed to pluck half a dozen of them out that looked ok, and there were a couple of other mixed veg trays that were past their prime as well. We also gave a pass to the crab legs, but not on account of their appearance. We just didn't feel like working that hard to get at the meat. All in all, we were pleasantly surprised. It was not the best Chinese food we've ever had. OTOH, it was FAR from the worst. Even more important, we agreed that we would have no problem going back. Is it a destination place? Absolutely not. But we definitely added it to our list of places to eat while we're on the road and want something we know will be good enough. Again, that sounds like it could be faint praise, but there's a ton of places out there for which we would not say the same. I'll add for context that the 4-star rating is relative to what I'd expect in Valley Springs. If Good Friend Chinese Restaurant were in, say, Richmond or San Francisco or San Gabriel, for instance, there's no way I'd rate them at 4 stars. More likely it'd be in the 2-3 star range in those areas. But considering the location and expectation, Good Friend is not a bad option. All the cars lined up in the Taco Bell drive-through should have gone across the highway to Good Friend! It also gave the "divorced dads with kids for the weekend" vibe.
