We decided to try this BBQ place today because of all the good reviews, but unfortunately, it was a big disappointment. Both the sign on the door and the website say they operate from 12-8pm. We got there around lunchtime and saw several people lined up outside, clearly excited to eat as well. After waiting 30-40 minutes, there was still no sign of any staff opening the doors or explaining what was going on. Everyone who had been waiting eventually just gave up and left. It was really frustrating and disappointing--especially since we had been looking forward to trying the food. At the very least, a notice on the door or an update online would have gone a long way in preventing the wasted time. read more

The ABSOLUTE WORST bbq I have ever had. First there is a big warning in the window that their liquor license is suspended. (Should have been a clue). Place was basically empty (should have been another clue). We ordered half pound brisket and half pound of pulled pork with their beans as a side since most sides were not available (third missed clue). No silverware offered after giving us the order(too late now I've already paid). Wife takes one bite and spits out pork. It is room temp at best. Doesn't trust food safety (rightfully so). I try brisket. Dry and flavorless. This is something from a Dennys menu. Bean side is canned kidney beans slathered in bbq sauce with some old cut up meat. Nauseating. AVOID this place! I told employee that this food was not at an appropriate temp and probably not safe to serve. Blank stare. Handed back all the food and he just pointed to the back and said "the trash is over there." Well... TRASH is exactly what I'd call it. Liquor license already gone. Hopefully food inspection shuts this place completely down. You've been warned! read more

one star for value. Second time door dashing from Horn. The first time, they forgot one of the sides I ordered. This time, the meat portions were laughable and they ran out of collared greens. It's my 3 year old son and I eating this and there's barely enough for us to reach satiety, yet, we spent $58 dashing this order. Finally got to try Horn Barbecue, and it was great! The brisket was insanely tender--definitely my fav. The ribs were smoky and flavorful, and the banana pudding was the perfect sweet finish. I want to start by saying that I've heard excellent reviews about Horn's Barbecue, which is why I drove 30 minutes to try it for myself. I arrived at 11:30 a.m., expecting them to be open based on their online hours, which state an 11:00 a.m. opening. However, the sign on the door said they open at 12:00 noon. I waited. They did not open until 12:05, and I was only the fourth person in line. When I finally reviewed the menu, I was disappointed to learn they were already out of several major items -- yams, sausage, and potato salad. I considered walking out, but since I made the drive, I went ahead and ordered what was available: brisket, spare ribs, greens, and macaroni and cheese. My total came to $74.00, and while I don't mind paying for quality food, the portions I received were unacceptable for that price. I was given three slices of brisket, three ribs, and small half-containers of greens and mac and cheese. This was nowhere near enough food -- especially considering I was trying to impress my date. What I received barely qualifies as an appetizer. I'm writing this review because the value simply does not match the cost. After a long drive, inaccurate hours, missing menu items, and extremely small portions for $74, I left disappointed and feeling overcharged not getting enough food. read more

My second attempt at giving horn a shot. I love bbq and had such high hopes. My first time, trying the Oakland spot. My brisket was dry, flavor on point, but I couldn't get past the dry. Second time at the Lafayette location, although my third try to get my hands on the elusive beef rib. If I could give stars alone for smoke and flavor, 4 to 4.5. However, all items were extremely salty. All the meats and greens, too much salt and this review coming from a salter. On top, the wait was quite long. Only one young guy cutting meats for orders and a young lady scooping up sides and handling the register. About 30 minutes to place my order and walk out the door. Why not have 2 slicers? I was waiting to try this place once the lines died down. On my visit, there was not a line, and the service was friendly and accommodating. The tables are spread out inside and outside with enough room between that you don't feel crowded in, as some restaurants try to do to pack people in. Now onto the food. I started drooling as the brisket was being sliced. It was juicy and flavorful, and the slices are cut thick. The pulled pork had great flavor and was not dry at all. I enjoyed the potato salad made from red potatoes, eggs, and green onions, which really elevated the flavor. The mac & cheese was also really good and the macaroni was cooked perfectly. I really appreciate that the barbecue sauce does not come on the meat, but rather you get to determine how much sauce you use. Bottles are on each table. I will definitely be back. I visit Lafayette at least a few times a month. I have seen and read the reviews of Horn BBQ and wanted to give it a try. A few weeks agon I found myself in the area for work and decided to grab a dinner there. I tried the Brisket, pulled pork and pork ribs. I had a side of coleslaw. I'm not a pitmaster by any means, but I do cook for large groups. Brisket, (beef and pork) Ribs, pulled pork, etc. The brisket: the rub that made the bark was so salty and had a weird spice to it, it was not eatable. I think I've read they do their Brisket Texas style which involves a lot of black pepper. I've done Brisket texas style and have used a lot of black pepper, but have never had that result. I had to remove the bark. The meat itself didn't have a lot of flavor and was a little dry. This was 6pm and I'm sure it was cooked earlier that morning. The pork ribs were tender and had a nice pull on the bite. They were moist, but not a ton of flavor. The pulled pork was good. Had some nice flavor to it, wasn't dry at all. I didn't see a lot of char from the bark, but I understand that's just being picky. The coleslaw was basically mayonnaise soup. I took a bite and tossed the whole container. It was not eatable. I do not like giving these type of reviews. I've done some research on Horn BBQ and I know it's locally owned restaurant. I will definitely be back, but will go for lunch. read more

They are the real deal. You can't really go wrong with their menu, the bowler sandwich is easy and delicious. Don't get the beef rib, I want them all! I complain about the BBQ we get around the Bay Area - no longer. Can't wait to try their Oakland location. Be prepared to wait in line, BBQ requires patience for all involved. It's worth it. Came here during lunch time on Wednesday. They were out of the brisket so I got pulled pork and ribs. The meats were cooked to perfection. That's what sets this place apart. Very flavorful. I don't even know if there was sauce. I didn't look for any. The sides were also very good. The beans were meaty but too sweet for my tastes. But I warn you, I don't like sweet things. They might be the perfect level of sweet for normal people. I don't know. The beans were very meaty as well. The coleslaw was good, kind of a poppy seed dressing. Sort of thing. Ordered 1/2 lb brisket 1/4 lb pulled pork and Granny Potatoes. First let me start by saying the brisket was BURNT waaaaay passed well done or any kind of "burnt" ends and was ROCK hard! Completely uneatable. When I went to show the workers, they said those are "burnt ends" as if I don't know what burnt ends are. I picked it up and squeezed it to show how hard they were. They asked what I wanted to do. The obvious thing to do is immediately take it back and apologize or refund. On top of that the bbq sauce is mid. It tastes like Kinders from a bottle. When it comes to BBQ; if the Brisket ain't right... Nothing will be right!!! I love a good barbecue plate with all the fixings. Let's get into the meats-the chicken, pulled pork, and the ribs were delicious; but my favorite was the BRISKET! Succulent with the bark exterior that I love but with a melt-in-your-mouth tender and moist interior. Like 10/10 I promise you. And the sides were just as good. We had to get some Horn after hearing they relocated to Lafayette. My hubs came on the first official day and was the third person in line. We have had Horn before when they were in Oakland but it has been a while. Is it pricey? Hell yes but it's not something we get everyday. It was a treat. Hubs ordered 2 beef ribs, 1/2 lb of brisket, 1 lb pork ribs, mac n cheese, and potato salad. Everything was roughly around $230 maybe? The meat was smokey, tasty, delicious. Our fav is still Terry Black's in TX but for Cali it hits the spot. The sides were okay, nothing memorable so I would skip it. We also tried the banana pudding which was pretty good. Overall if you are wanting BBQ, really good BBQ this will satisfy your craving but your wallet may not be happy. Once in a while treat for sure. read more

My wife & I ate lunch here on the first Sunday after they opened this location.  I have been a fan of Chef Horn's food since from his location in West Oakland and was hoping for a very similar experience.  We drove into the parking lot at 11:15 AM (for a noon opening time), but there was no one in line yet.  The smokers were going strong in the back, so I knew the place was going to open on time.  Instead of sticking around, we drove down the street to do some quick shopping.  When we came back 20 minutes later, there were only 7 people in line.  We parked on the street (free for 2 hours Monday through Sunday, no restrictions on the weekends) and took our place.  By the time the doors opened at noon, the line was 40 people deep. The configuration was the same as the previous BBQ joint:  the fountain drink machine by the door, and the carving station and cashier on the left side.  Since there was only a single station, it did take a bit to get through the line.  One staff will carve the meat portions to order, a second staff will dish out the sides, and a third will ring up the total.   My wife ordered a pound of pork spare ribs (they didn't have beef ribs in that day), a half pound of brisket, a quarter pound of pulled pork, one hot link, and small sides of pit beans, mac and cheese and granny potatoes.  They were served with complimentary white bread and pickled onions.  Water is available next to the soda fountain. We took our tray to a table by the window (for everyone waiting in line outside to watch us eat), which also had a roll of paper towels and a bottle of the house BBQ sauce.  My first bite was from the brisket, which I asked to be cut from the end.  This forkful was extremely fatty, just the way I like it.  (If you want a leaner cut of the brisket, ask for a portion from the middle.)  The ends also have more of the wonderful bark, imparting so much flavor.  Even though the sauce adds extra flavor (not sweet), the brisket doesn't need any... it's perfect by itself.  The spare ribs were also perfect, with a firm bark and tender meat underneath.  Again, you can add sauce, but I don't think it's necessary.  These are my favorite pork ribs in the Bay Area.  The pulled pork was pleasantly moist, not dry like at most BBQ places, and the hot link had a great snap to the casing and just enough heat to make it interesting (not the hottest I've ever tried, but not weak, either).  Of the sides, the pit beans were the best, with chunks of brisket mingled with the beans and the sweet sauce.  The mac and cheese and potatoes were good, too.  The server was very nice and piled all the sides to the brim. Overall, our experience was very similar to the ones we had in West Oakland (albeit with a shorter line, though that may change as this locations become more popular).  The staff were extremely accommodating, answering all the questions the patrons had.  As with any BBQ place of renown, I would recommend coming early to make sure you get the cuts of meat you want, as they often sold out early in their other locations.  There is also a paid parking lot on site, along with the free street parking. read more

The ambiance is typical cowboy bbq. Nothing special, the service was from the counter. Again, nothing special. I arrived about 6 on a Saturday evening and they were out of just about anything. He had a half rack of pork ribs and some pulled pork, I took the ribs a got a pulled pork sandwich to go with some put beans and some potato salad. The sides had great flavor but the beans were undercooked. The pulled pork sandwich was extra good, in fact it is probably the best pulled pork sandwich I have had in years. We came by because everyone was talking about their bbq, and we wanted to see if they were worth the hype. We arrived around 2pm, and there was a short line, but the place was crowded. Parking was scarce and metered. They only had one cashier and one person cutting the meat so the line moves slow. They were out of a lot of stuff.., would be helpful if their menu board shows what's sold out. Ordered at the counter, half of what we wanted was sold out. We settled on a hot link, beef ribs, tri tip, beans, and potato salad. We really wanted brisket and pork ribs but that was gone too. I hadn't had Horn bbq since the 1st oakland location burned down, so I was pleased to see they opened up a location in Lafayette. Brisket was ok/good. It was missing that post oak kiss of smoke and peppery bark that blew my mind the first time I came to Horn. Also, their trim needs a little work. Some parts were left on that had no chance of not being dried out, to wit, I could tell that the "Mohawk" was left on the brisket, and the end of the point was left too angled. I had a center cut piece of the point end, and sure enough, the end was burnt/dried out to the point where I couldn't stab it with a fork (see my photos). I think Matt Horn has officially spread himself too thin. It was enjoyable BBQ, but nothing like it was 3/4 years ago when it was worth driving to a moderately scary neighborhood and waiting over an hour for a slice of brisket. Overall, I still enjoyed it, but i wouldn't call this an amazing BBQ (which it used to be). Will be back if I am craving brisket and don't want to cook it myself. read more

Second time eating at Horn. First experience was the Elk Grove CA location. As for this location the good experience continues. Tasty food, plenty of options, walked out stuffed. Service & employees are welcoming and carry a smile, how they do it is beyond me with what they put up with during busy times. The wait times OMG, BUT worth it.
