PROS: Food was excellent. The lounge music was great as we went on a weeknight and it was perfect along with the hookah's throughout the entire evening. The only thing keeping it from the one star rating is the decent hookah. CONS: The one night that my boyfriend forgot to bring his ID, we ordered a bottle of wine and they wouldn't let him consume it. He looks well over 21 being in his early 40's. I had to finish the entire bottle by myself while they stood there gawking at us to make sure he didn't drink from my glass. That spoiled my mood right from the beginning. Then the waiter spilled food from my plate and dropped used utensils and missed my boyfriend's foot by the skin of his teeth. Decor was minimal, but it did it's job. Me & my husband went here on Friday night around 7pm. I called for reservation & told them I have Groupon . Even though we paid for Groupon the person who answered said I still have to spent $30 extra for which I replied yes I will be ordering hookah. When we sat near the window we felt really cold so we moved to another couch near wall side but the whole place was cold. We spent 3 hours wearing our winter coat & I had to use bathroom 3-4 times. We informed the server but she was cold too and was not able to do anything about it. Outside it was cold snowy in 20 degrees. It was too late for us to leave as we already ordered our food & hookah. We ordered fresh fruit hookah for $30 which was really good & they changed the coal twice in 3 hrs. Food is prefix platter with appetizer, entree, dessert & drink. We really enjoyed the food platter. I ordered Rose wine which I didn't liked it so that was a waste. Service was good. In the end they charge us $10 in taxes $20 in gratuity which I think is a steep amount. Even with Groupon of $45, I spent extra $60 with hookah. Its a nice decent place for hookah more like 3.5 star. They can upgrade few things especially fix the heater in this cold weather. read more

I give this place four stars with the condition that every time I've been here, I've been (or at least ended up) fairly drunk and I've never paid for anything. So maybe that makes me not the best judge. THAT BEING SAID, I love Horus. The hookah comes in tons of flavors and is a fun way to kick off an evening. The belly dancers are hot. And it turns into an insane like dance club later?! What more is there to ask for. I don't even really remember what we drank, and I think we might have eaten here too? And danced. My friend says she sat right next to speakers that were really loud, so watch out for those I guess. I met really nice people from a CUNY once. This place is awesome basically. Came here at around 1 AM that ignorant bouncer that was in front of the door on 9/15/2019 Was stupider than anybody I have ever met in my entire life he did not recognize an ID that was not from New York State and he automatically thought that it was a fake ID I guess he doesn't know anything about I.D's from Puerto Rico. He denied my cousin access to the lounge just because he didn't recognize it. Don't they have scanners to scan ID to see if it's real or not? When I questioned him about it he didn't want to scan it when I asked for the manager he didn't want to even hear what I was saying and automatically took the bouncers side. This place is ridiculous and I will never come here again !! They Discriminate against people who don't live in New York State. By the way that bouncer had a huge chip on his shoulder for no reason. We were going to originally go to the Horus on A at 7PM on a Saturday but there was a 15-minute wait and it seemed super packed. This was understandable since it was the first super nice Saturday in NYC of the year. My friend had been at the Avenue B location before and really enjoyed it, so I called to see if they were available and we took the 6-minute walk over here. We got there and it was pretty empty so we got seated and served quickly. We ordered a mint tea for the table, an order of hummus, and a watermelon mint hookah. The only thing I didn't like really was that when we asked for the hookah, they immediately said "pineapple head, yeah?" We didn't really hear them and kind of nodded. Granted, we should've clarified but I didn't appreciate how they coerced us to spend extra money, hence the four stars. The flavor was great and we ended up getting blueberry in a pineapple head. The hummus was basically garlic with some chickpeas, which we liked but not everyone would like it. Mint tea was great. The service was very good and they didn't charge for extra coals, like some places. The music and audible but not loud, so I didn't have to yell at people. It was a really nice cafe. I went on both a Saturday and Monday night and they were two different experiences. Saturday night, it was like a club scene: with loud music (Arabic, English and Spanish), strobe lights and a party scene. Drinks and food were fine, you can dine in and enjoy the ambiance. Service was good and prompt even though it was packed and busy. Monday night, it was a chill hookah lounge. I didn't dine in, I just smoked hookah and the hookah wasn't the best quality. I never been to Horus on B because my friends say the one on ave A is better and thats where we always go. My husband purchased the groupon and we went last night to the one on B. Nice to know they have outdoor seating (perfect for hookah and drinks on a summer night) as we walked in. The groupon included glass of wine or beer, appetizer dish to share and entree dish to share. The hunmus in the appetizer dish was so good. I am not a fan of grape leaves but there was an exception tonight! The lamb pieces for the entree dish was so tender and flavorful! I ordered a fresh pineapple hookah with watermelon and mint. Delicious and flavor pasted for the 2 hours we were smoking and drinking. Servers are friendly and even though we had to ask for water initially, they were attentive and refilled the cups each time. Baklava was for dessert and again, very very tasty and delicious. I prefer Horus B over Horus A. You are not cramped when sitting indoors, the one on B has more of a lounge feel with couches and tvs to play sports games that are on. They change the coal regularly so the hookah can burn faster. Had two rounds of shots. So we weren't a cheap table for 3 people as you can see. I'll leave it up to karma from here. ***************** An out-of-town friend wanted to throw a surprise birthday party for her boyfriend (also from out of town), She made a reservation for 10 people at 8pm on a Friday night. A few of us arrive early/on time and are seated promptly right in front of the door. The area is clearly meant for no more than 8 people but management insists that we can fit at least 10 people comfortably. It would have been comfortable if none of us had shoulders or arms. Fine. So we're told that there is a 1 drink minimum per person. That's cool, we were all planning to get a few drinks and definitely some food throughout the night. We're psyched to see our friend again after at least two years of separation. Over the next 15 minutes, all 10 seats are filled. Problem is, not all confirmed guests have arrived yet. Some people showed up unannounced. We ask to extend our seating area (the tables next to us are empty at this time). What does the bald Indian manager do? Scold and penalize my friend who organized this outing by smacking us with a preposterous $30 dollar minimum per person "Or you'll have to leave after 10PM." I don't have a problem with the minimum but they make this clear from the start (remember, they told us the minimum would be 1 drink when we first arrived). Mother%#@er, we were probably going to spend that much if you DIDN'T impose it on us. Some. Old. Bull. $hit. But you know what? This is supposed to be a surprise bday party so we decide to suck it up and stay for the night. We assumed that management would give us the seats next to us since we were paying this premium just to be here. WRONG. They filled up those seats no more than 5 minutes after the imposed minimum. Our remaining three guests arrive and they are told that they must partake in the $30 minimum but are not allowed to sit next to the party. WHAT? By now, half of us had already placed food orders and were already waiting for about 10 minutes for the food to come out. Meanwhile, the other half of the party wants to leave - which is completely understandable because the penis wrinkle of a manager was being a total prick and giving us the evil hover. Our food arrives and the rest of the party asks for the check. No sooner than some of us had finished eating was baldy ordering his staff to clear our tables already. The check was paid, the money made, and now he was trying to kick us all out asap. Mind you, there's nobody in particular waiting to be seated - and where the hell was the belly dancer? There is no belly dancer. This is all really a shame because we were all out to have a good time. Eat some great food. Smoke some hookah. Catch up with friends in a chill environment. Take some pictures. None of this happened and yet our bill came up to over $300. Those of us who ordered our food were satisfied with the flavor (not the portion size or prices, though), and the wait staff was very friendly and somewhat apologetic for their dick-head manager. We took our business to Cloister Cafe. Everyone was happy there. You can see that I rarely give out low ratings because I am a very reasonable person and usually give establishments the benefit of a doubt. The second Horus cafe I'm reviewing tonight, and unfortunately even though they make up the for turning down the music a bit in this one they lose out in the small uncomfortable quarters and sub par food. I have been to many small bars or restaurant's that have made up for it in other areas, but Horus fails to excel in other areas. They just plainly fail in everything. You can compare it to Layala lounge right across the street. It's even smaller and more crowded than Horus, but a world of difference. The food is bland, and the service just sucks. Those stars are for the hookahs alone. I originally had a reservation for 15 at Le Souk 3 weeks in advance. They call me the Saturday OF and tell me it is being moved to Horus due to emergency renovations. I fell for the old bait-and-switch and boy did I pay. I asked not to be seated by the door and what do they do? They seat our party smack in front of the door. Nice nicotine-infused breeze though. I can see the line outside of poor souls looking eager as hell waiting to get in, and I knew I should have told them to go across the street for a better time without a wait. Atmosphere was ok, but I've seen smaller places do more with their space. Why the DJ was playing sing-a-long hits from the 60's, only God knows. The meals I approved for $35 a head suddenly became $45 a head. The food was as bland as my Tuesday Brooks Brothers button-downs. However, we did have a great waiter but we had to wait FOREVER for the food. Then, it came super fast and some people who had to get up to smoke/bathroom returned only to miss a course. They would not serve them the course that they missed, but I still had to pay full price for their a$$es. I get depressed and gulp down some of the $100 Sangria pitcher (thats what the bill said). It tastes like Koolaid with wine. It doesn't help. The only reason we continued to stay was because we were told there would still be a belly dancer. Guess what? Come on, take a guess. I'll give you a clue. There was a non-sober muscle-head dancing with a hookah in his mouth in the middle of the room with "The Rich Life" on his chest. He was not the belly dancer. Perhaps she was invisible but I did not see her appear by the time we left at 12:15 am. This place needs to get over itself. Where to start.... I went last weekend w/ a group of friends. We had a reservation but that didnt seem to matter. We ended up waiting for about 40 minutes even though half of the party was there. Once we were inside we were seated at an overly cramped table that was not large enough for our party. My friend said to the host that he had reserved the tent area, to which we were told we would be moved. 40 minutes later we are still seated at the same table. They kept on holding off on bringing our food and drinks b/c we would be moving "soon". We decided to just stay at the same table, the other half of our party came and went b/c the place was too crowded and our table was too small. Now I expect a place to be crowded and loud on a Saturday nite, but the service was awful and the food wasn't anything great. The only thing the service was consistent w/ was reminding us that it was a $20 minimum per person and a two hour limit for the table. I only review when there's something exceptional or awful. This is an awful review. I was meeting three friends last night around 10pm who were already inside. A tall black bouncer with glasses was outside the establishment went my friends and I rolled up. We're a normal group of 5, accounting and finance professionals between 25-28, four guys and a girl. My friend is wearing a pair of shorts. This bouncer lines us up on this roped off carpet area (gmafb) outside the bar and slowly checks our ID's one by one. Bouncer says: "your friend can't come in, he's wearing shorts." so i say ok, and we all stand around for a minute or two deciding what to do. though surprised, i accept the right of a restaurant to enforce a no shorts dress code in the middle of summer... So our only option they say is to sit outside. Their outside area is a little sliver of an area that's enclosed in plastic. It would have been unpleasant to say the least, so I made an executive decision for my friends that we would go to another place. Remember, there's about a dozen hookah bars in the immediate area. So I go to walk inside the bar to tell my 3 friends that we're going to go somewhere else. As I am just getting inside, the bouncer puts his hand out and forbids me from continuing further inside the restaurant...with no reason. He just forbids me from doing it. This brings me from surprised mode to irate mode. Btw, I am a level headed mellow person who avoids confrontation and drama unless absolutely necessary. Ask yourself, have you ever heard of a situation where an establishment won't let you inside to talk to your friend who is a paying customer already? Maybe you have, who knows. So I ask this extremely rude bouncer to get the manager. Manager comes out, I say hey sir, my 4 friends and I were going to spend a couple hundred dollars at your establishment, but then this bouncer was extremely rude to me and my friend as well, so we've decided that we're not going to come here. Manager shrugs and says ok. My friends had already ordered their hookah so they couldn't leave with us, but my good friend BBM'd me to say that there were in fact gentlemen in the hookah bar proper (not the outside area...) with shorts on! What a surprise! Oh, and the atmosphere I saw when I was inside for about 10 seconds before ushered out by the bouncer was dead. It was nearly empty. We walked over to 1st st between 1st and 2nd avenues to go to Cozy Cafe. Cozy was lively, fun, with quick and friendly service. They show me love whenever i come back, my BF introduced me to this place in '06 and I never looked back. It took my hookah cherry haha. I don't drink here often, but this is definitely why they only get 4 stars. Service: amazing, amazing managers and waitresses. even the hookah guys are great. tip them well ( tips are included) they deserve a better tip anyways! FOOD: Basics like Hummus, pita bread and falafel are amazing. hummus is my fav. The lamb and chicken kebabs are to die for! soooo goood. Hookahs: Enough for 3-4 people. here's the trick, come when there are less than 15 people inside. you'll get the best hookah which lasts up to 1.5 hours. Come at night, you'll get hookah that last about 30-45 mins. I've been here enough times to know. Also, if the hookah is shit, complain. just tag them down and ask them to change it. make sure you do it within the first few minutes of getting it. believe me my friend nicknamed " the shisha princess" is a craaaaaaazy person when it comes to getting good hookah. The servers all know to watch for her hand to fix it when it's bad.Free coal changes and quick service. PEOPLE: Good mix of people.It's good for a crowded place but you can also lose yourself in conversation without a problem/ Bathrooms: Single person bathroom, always clean. lovely decor int eh bathrooms too. Dancing: Small strip in the middle turns into a dance party towards the middle of the night. This is also where the belly dancer dances, they are always pretty awesome. They entertain up front and personal, always with a smile. Overall: a great place for friend and groups. Pick your time wisely and remember to just complain if the hookah is shit. They gotta make it right for 15-20 a pop. read more
