A confession: the original plan was Gardenia Terrace on a Friday night but when you leave it to others to make plans and set it up...depending on the person...it might fail. As it did in this case. Upon entering, the first question asked was *drum roll: "Do you have a reservation"...and of course no one bothered to find out if we did need one. But why feel like the evening was screwed? I heard of this spot called La sultana and although it wasn't on the opulent level as Gardenia, there were some great reviews and it seems to be one of the OG hookah spots from back in the days. Once we arrived here, lo and behold my hunch was right. This was one of those classic spots like Babel, Le SOUK , Horus etc etc. It's got a classic feel to it , like how hookah lounges used to be back when the first wave hit with the true middle eastern feel of Astoria and Bayridge . I didn't bother with their food cuz all we wanted to do was smoke and chill. It's a place where you want to just sip some tea or whatever beverage , smoke and chit chat. This place is a great spot to lounge and smoke some sheesha with friends late at night. We were able to get a reservation for a group of 8 on a Saturday night, which can be pretty tricky sometimes. While there are a lot of flavors, the ones we tried were definitely on the weaker end. That being said, what really made the experience for us was being allowed to order food to the place and eat in our area. We were able to chill and smoke and drink while waiting for delicious wings to arrive! Since this place stays open quite late, there was no rush as well, which was great. One catch is that they don't accept credit card, but Venmo seems to be accepted which is a decent alternative. There is also an ATM inside otherwise. There was hardly anyone here when we entered so the group of 8 of us basically had the back area to ourselves. We enjoyed their fresh hummus and Guam masala. Overall, an over-priced sub-par experience. I've been to numerous hookah bars across the city and this place lands on the lower end of the pack. The hookah was weak, the flavor was average and the coals burned the shisha too quickly. What really makes this place a two-star experience isn't the super average experience, but the fact that they DO NOT accept credit/debit cards. You have to download and upload your card information onto an app called "Level Up." This is extremely inconvenient especially in a world with ApplePay and a variety of other ways to compensate for service. Will not return. This is one of the only hookah spots I keep going back to. It's not spectacular in any way, but they offer a variety of flavors that are strong and the staff is always so nice to us. The atmosphere here is much more relaxed than any of the other hookah bars I've been to on a Saturday night. The iced mint green tea I had was very good. The music was played at a comfortable level and the seating was good. It doesn't even bother me that they don't serve alcohol. My problem is with the hookah. The hookah has a lot of potential. They use khalil mamoons. They use the real natural coals, not coco naras. But it must be the tobacco they use or the way they cut their fruit bowls because there just isn't that much flavor and the smoke isnt very thick. The hookah was reasonably priced at $18 and lasted all night , however there is a one drink minimum per person and be sure to bring cash when you come here. It was a bit comical that they had a non-smoking sign , but none-the-less its a great place to unwind. We went on Saturday- they opened around 5 but we had to wait a bit for them to open up but it was well worth it! First thing you notice is the atmosphere which is fantastic. After walking around the city all day its the perfect spot to relax and unwind. We ordered the Cardamon Tea and the Mint Moroccan Tea- so delicious!! And you get the whole pot for $5! We ordered the watermelon hookah which sounded like it might be a little too mild but it definitely wasn't- so yummy and service was great. The owner(s) are super nice and we ended up getting another round of hookah For a Saturday it was so nice and quiet, the music wasn't blaring like some Hookah lounges and was very clean. I've been here twice now. One time with a friend and another time alone for hookah. (Party of 2 and then solo) The place has a decent vibe. And the hookah is actually pretty good with decent service. I have two issues with this place. The restroom is really small with the trashcan always sitting on top of the toilet. Most recently there were bugs crawling all over the restaurant including roaches. Secondly the main thing that really convinced me to post a negative review for this place is their application of service charge on the bill. Their printed menu states that they will add a service charge for party of five or more people. Both of the times I've gone there to service charge has been added automatically to my check. And that too at 18%. With an additional space for tips. Now I get the whole argument about how waitstaff is not paid enough by the management. But to add a service charge for a party of two or even one is really ridiculous. And the too does not follow their own printed menu. Where to start! I went last weekend with a decent sized group. Such an amazing place. Reminds me of hookahs ive had studying abroad in Egypt. The staff was cordial but not too friendly or in your face which is what i like when i'm with a group of friends. I recommended this place to a friend and he went today and told me they started serving alcohol today. Beer and wine for 6 dollars. That makes the drink minimum totally fine in my book. The hookah is 18 and hits quite smoothly. Fresh fruit bowl is 5 dollars more we got one normal and one fruit. The fruit lasted longer but both were fantastic. After going to many hookah places in Manhattan, I think I finally found my favorite one. I decided to check this place out after reading the reviews and came here with a friend of mine. When you go inside you notice a very relaxing atmosphere with the perfect middle eastern touch to it. When you first enter you'll think that it is a small but the main seating room is in the back. The owner took us to the back of the place and you'll first notice how beautiful the decor is. The couches on both sides for seating with the small tables and the hookahs placed on them are fantastic. There is a ton of flavors to choose from and they have additional things that you can add to the hookah such as the ice tip or to change the bowl to a fruit head. We ordered a iced lemon mint with the ice tip and man that was a great flavor and having the ice tip was a nice addition. They frequently change the coals so not once did I have to wave the person over to change the coals! Which is very rare in most hookah places, they didn't wait till it was barely hitting they just changed it once it was slightly dying out. The music wasn't ridiculously loud like other places and the lighting was perfect that you can actually see the person and you can speak without yelling. We also ordered an appetizer combo plate which was so good, everything on it was delicious from the grape leaves to the hummus. My only complaint is that they charge $5 for every type of regular drink including water bottles which is unheard of but then again it's NYC. So if you want something to drink don't get a water bottle get something else. I remember going to the small/cozy Sultana Cafe throughout my college life from 2007 to 2011 and loved it. Imagine my surprise coming back here a few days ago to notice he moved to a bigger place that can accommodate way more people! This makes it extremely comfortable to come in with large groups or even smaller ones and not feel cramped. The Hookah - The standard hookah comes in an Egyptian bowl but they have options for fruit bowls or other different types of hoses at extra cost. The charcoals they use are what really shine here. None of that chemical circular quick-light crap that most places use; these are natural charcoal pieces that are all different shapes (think coco-nara consistency). The Service - It's incredible how often they come around to check on your charcoals. Never do you have to ask for a charcoal change or a tending to your hookah - they constantly replace your charcoals at no extra cost and make sure your hookah experience is great. The owner, Ali, is an honest and accommodating host. The food/drink - I haven't gotten food here but heard it tastes great. There is a 1 drink min (around $5) and we usually get the teas. I don't normally drink tea but the mint moroccan and the chai are out of this world delicious. Very refreshing and relaxing. Ambiance/venue - The place is spacious and can accommodate tons of people including large groups. It isn't stuffy and has fresh air coming in from the back door (sometimes to my displeasure as I like to practice my O's!). The sofas are comfortable and the decor makes you feel like you're in an Aladdin movie, with great music playing in the background. Price - also wonderful, have never broken the $20 mark here per person. In the end, this is my favorite hookah place in the city. I have always felt that hookah places, like clubs and vengeful ex-wives, always attempt to extract as much money from you as possible while providing little care to your experience. Came here with a group of 10+ for a friend's birthday and we found the service to be terrible. Exceptionally slow and inattentive waiters. We weren't given plastic/hygienic covers for the hookah mouthpiece until we asked multiple times. Because it was a larger group we had to meet a minimum number of hookahs for the table even though we would have gladly spent that money on drinks and food. Instead my husband and I were forced to smoke when we didn't want to that night--the other 8-10 people were all smoking. My friend ordered hummus and an hour later still didn't receive it. The atmosphere was cute, decorations and lanterns covered the place--made it very authentic. Generally speaking it wasn't my cup of tea. A while later I requested coal for our hookah, and he literally questioned why I needed coal again, claiming "I got you coal two minutes ago." There are two problems with that: 1) it was at least 10-15 minutes and 2) EVEN IF it were two minutes, it's your damn job to change coal when requested to. Unprofessional, horrible service. Let me preface this review by informing the reader of the fact that I was raised in the middle east and have been smoking hookah/shisha/nargile since I was 11. Sultanas, especially the new one, is the quintessential middle eastern hookah bar. With refreshing mint tea, delicious kebabs, dense cakes and some of the best hookah in New York City (yes, even Steinway could learn a trick or two from this place). The establishment is spacious and well decorated with traditional music in the background. The ambiance is that of a laid back lounge where you can come to relax with friends till 5 am after having a rough week. The place has free wifi and comfortable seating THE HOOKAH - This place uses the traditional coals on their hookah's and is one of the only places where I always get a fresh, cleaned pipe with no cracks or duct tape on the inside or the outside. It is unpretentious and serves classic hookah flavors with regular coaling by the staff who are all very passionate about serving good hookah. Let me stress how importance the coals are to good hookah, those ridiculous square and circle shaped coals are fake, compressed coals that really really ruin the experience. The owner Ali, is a good friend of mine and has the most charming and hospitable personality. Coaling is generous and regular. I have been to most of the Hookah bars in the city and I choose to come back to sultanas again and again. I've been to La Sultana more times then my check ins would lead you to believe, quite frankly probably at least double the 10 the check ins. Regardless, I have quite a bit to say, most of which is positive so stick with me as this one will be quite a read. The shorter, somewhat abridged version...I'd say it's not as good as it was about three months ago, yet still the best hookah spot in NYC. The teas are ridiculously good and make the $5 dollar drink (price of all non alcoholic drinks if you go that route) a true pleasure. The food is delicious yet pricy and the hookah is pricey yet smooth, and has a subtle hit. Now to the longer, more detailed version. As mentioned by practically every reviewer, the mint tea is the way to go. You get a whole pot for five dollars. It's probably three full cups and very minty. It's a win and worth it. The cardamon tea is very flowery, and if that's your thing, rock out. The soft drinks and water are way over priced. The food is expensive yet cooked on the premises (you walk right past the spot where it and the fresh coals are prepared when going to the back). The sampler kabob (forgot the name) is like 14 bucks. It's pricey and that's annoying...but you get what you pay for in that the meat is some of the best meat I've had in terms of the tenderness of the cut and preparation. Lamb, chicken and beef are top notch so the quality is there. I wish you got more of it though. As to the hookah, this spot uses coal made on the premises on a stove. I'm no expert in terms of preparation, but most hookah spots use fast burning stuff you get in the smoke shops. There is a definite difference in the quality of the smoke and the taste. The base shishas as well are delicious, smooth and flavorful. They are pricy, but quality is there. I'm a fan of the higher priced Sultana Mix just due to the taste of spices, but that's just my preference. Service can be spotty here though, but due to all the positives above, it's not enough to drop a star. Ali, the owner is quite gracious and a nice guy. I've had a few one on one discussions with him and he's a nice guy and everyone working there is always pleasant. My issue regarding service is coal changes tend to be slow at times. The real plus is you are left alone and never badgered to buy food or drinks. The atmosphere is one of the most laid back spots I've ever been in outside of spinning albums in my apartment with the candle on relaxing and letting the grooves just take over. Came here with a group of friends after we all decided we wanted hookah but didn't want to go all the way to Astoria. We stumbled on this place with the reviews. Yelp has always worked for us, and this wasn't an exception. It's on a quiet street, and it looks small when you first walk in, but there is a MUCH nicer room in the back that's nicely decorated with lanterns, couches, and fabrics on the wall. Love the atmosphere! The hookah's were good for the price and lasted for a while. We asked if they had any recommendations, and they were really helpful in describing the flavors. We had the fruit mix and the blue mist and the flavors were very, very good. The blue mist was my absolute favorite. The guy changing the coals was very nice and funny. It was raining heavily outside the night we went so he told us we could stay there until the morning if we wanted, haha. He even refilled our coals again while we waited for the rain to stop. I've been going to this place for a year now, and although I personally love it, it definitely takes some getting used to. The hookah itself is well priced, but the drinks that they mandate you order...I can never get used to paying $5 for a glass of iced tea or coffee. Usually, I am pleased with the quality of the hookah as well, but during my most recent trip, it was weak and barely lasted an hour and a half. We also asked for a coal change, and the coals must have been extremely hotter than usual, because the hookah we were smoking tasted like burnt cookies made out of coal. My last trip also came with a free show - courtesy of the New York Fire Department! The residents in the building above complained that smoke was coming into their apartments, so we had a bunch of firemen traipsing up and down the extremely narrow establishment for 25 minutes. But they didn't ask us to leave, so.... Also, they used to be BYOB but something happened with their liquor license (or lack thereof?) so that's no longer a thing, at least for now. Also, they don't allow smoking. I thought that was hilarious. I don't smoke, but really, the non-smoking sign added a distinct ironic flair. My first time at this hookah lounge, I would love to start by saying their customer service was amazing! Hookah was great, lasted about 2 hours. Didn't burn, wasn't harsh and tasted what I ordered unlike other joints I tried in NY! Also the food was very tasteful. Thank you! I will most definitely come back. read more
