Don't go here. I went because it is the earliest open hookah bar in the east village. I showed up for "happy hour" and ordered water. After the waters came, we decided we hated the place because of the decor and general creepiness. I ask for the bill. $20.30 for 4 waters. The waiter notices my discomfort and says that it is written on the menu (no it isn't). Also this is during happy hour. Please don't go. Finally, their wine markup is literally 20x for the crane lake cabernet . It is 3.00 wholesale, and on the menu for 60 bucks. Please don't go. I hate this place. I can't believe how sad this encounter made me, and I don't know how they stay in business. They add 18% gratuity on everything. Even waters that already cost 4 dollars. This is terrible. I've been coming to Horus for years, but had a bad experience this past Saturday (I believe there's new management). We waited for at least 45 min which ok fine its a Saturday, so its to be expected, especially because we were a group of 7. Finally they told us that a table for 4 people opened up . They told us we should take it especially since it was freezing out. The other 3 would have to wait until another table opened up. So 4 of us went to sit down, and we saw that our other 3 friends could fit at our table, since we were all girls anyway. We didn't even ask them, but the table next to us was so nice, that they even insisted that we take a couple of their seats. Well, the manager came over and started yelling at us, saying we can't just sit where we want, and take over another group's table. He was extremely rude. The other table even went to the manager and insisted it was no problem, and that we were all perfectly comfortable. This went on for at least 5 min. Normally an establishment will try to accommodate their customers, but this manager was the total opposite. We did end up staying there, but I doubt I will ever go there again. The hookah is decent, and Horus is open until 4am, but I'm sure there are better places out there now. read more

Disclaimer: I love going to authentic Middle Eastern hookah bars in Astoria, but I decided to venture out into Alphabet City and stay close to home. What can you look forward to if you check out Horus Cafe? Menu? Decent appetizer menu available. Nothing stands out really. In terms of drinks, they offer cocktails and beers, which are moderately priced. Music? Usually the music at this place is really live feel good music to get you in the mood to drink and smoke a little hookah. They play EVERYTHING and ANYTHING. Wait time? I've gone on a weekend and the place has been so packed inside that a line was formed outside to get in. Try to get here a bit early if you can. Hookah? Unlike most places in Manhattan, Horus has a person going around to check if your coals need to be changed. If the place is packed he doesn't come around often, but it's still better than nothing. Regular pricing is $20, but if you get your flavor on a fresh fruit hookah head the price goes up to $30. Please note if there is a special EVENT you will get charged a higher price. Management tends to do this from time to time. Entertainment? Every single time I have been to Horus there have been belly dancers strutting their moves all throughout the venue. I've seen a range from simple moves to holding a sword while dancing. Just sit back, relax, and enjoy the show! Again, I enjoy my more laid back hookah bars in Astoria, but if you're in the city with a group of friends in the mood for some drinks and hookah then this is your spot! read more

I used to love the place until 62nd street closed and Ashraf (bald guy refered in other reviews) become the manager. Ashraf does not understand customer service/loyalty. He treats his regular customers like shit and acts like he has never seen them before. The other people that work there are great, especially Chico. Went there last night with a living social. Thought it would be really crowded as the manager confirmed the res and dress code many times. It did not get crowded until we were leaving at 11pm but I guess that is NYC. The living social deal was a pre fix and the food was super plentiful! Started with hummus and baba ganoush, grape leaves (which were warm and scrumptious!), salad, falafel and pita. We left so much on our plate. The baba needed a bit more seasoning but the rest of the apps were super tasty. The main mean with a platter with chicken, lamb and beef with a few veggies and rice. Good but not the best I have had. Dessert was baklava, again good but not the best. Despite the Living Social the night still cost us $50 as we paid for two drinks, a cup of Turkish coffee and the add tax and gratuity to the bill. One of my favorite places to go for a drink and smoke hookah. It is good for small or large groups. I have never tried their food so my review speaks directly to the hookah and their bellinis. The regular hookah is $20 and their fresh fruit hookah is $30. The first time I went I had the regular hookah and the second the fresh fruit. The fresh fruit is definitely a lot better. They regularly change out the coal with no charge like places are supposed to do which is amazing. Places definitely do not do that everywhere which could make a night of hookah relatively expensive. When there is a live band playing the hookah [regular] raises in price to $30 which they do not advertise but they tell you as soon as they hand you the menu. Their Bellinis are among the best I have had. Peach is my favorite. It becomes a pricey night but not if you are splitting it among a few people. Ive been told that there are other places that are just as good if not better for cheaper but I live a few minutes away from here so its convenient. Their hookah is strong and gives you a nice buzz unlike other places where it seems even if you eat the coal [never ever but...you knyou still can't get a reaction. read more

The music is deafening (normal conversation is not possible even sitting close to each other), the rules are strict (your party is kicked out after 2 hours), but the experience can be enjoyable nonetheless. My girlfriend and I went to the Horus Cafe on a Friday evening with another couple. We had a Living Social deal that offered a $84 value meal for two. When we arrived at 6:45 the place was fairly empty and we were seated promptly. I asked before we sat down for water for the table with one glass to have no ice as my girlfriend prefers her water room temperature. We were seated ten minutes before the water finally arrived. We looked through the menu but didn't find a meal that looked like our coupon offer so we inquired and were given a separate menu showing a prix fixe meal for $35 and told that was what the coupon covered. We ordered the meal from the coupon and the other couple ordered a lamb tagine and chicken kabobs. The coupon came with a drink for my girlfriend and me. I ordered a beer. She asked if they had rose wine and, after some hesitation, said they did. The wine they brought was some overly sweet wine, almost a desert wine, and almost not drinkable. After about fifteen minutes they brought out appetizers for our coupon and three salads. We couldn't figure out why there were three salads and finally learned that the staff had misunderstood and brought one more salad than specified. The food was OK but nothing special. The we waited for the entrees (and waited and waited and waited....) After an hour I got up and hailed the waitress and asked where our food was, She said it would be right out. And it was right out - AFTER ANOTHER FIFTEEN MINUTES! Once the food arrived it immediately became clear why it had taken so long. They'd used every last minute to cook all the flavor and moisture out of all the kebob meats. It was dry and hugely overdone. The meal ended with a dessert which was a tough dry baklava. When we were presented with the check, the coupon was not reflected, They corrected this and we finally escaped. It was a wholly unacceptable dining experience. The wait staff and management seemed totally out of touch with the food quality and service they were providing. Needless to say, we won't be returning to this restaurant again. read more

2 Stars I effing hate being around smoke, but got dragged into here for a little while because our friends were finishing up their cancer and coffee. The setup was ok, service was slow, and they don't have a full bar. Our server said they had a house whiskey, so I ordered a glass of that on ice. As soon as I took a sip, I told her, this is a whiskey and water, not straight whiskey. She turned and asked the bartendress and I guess that's what their house whiskey tastes like.....1/2 whiskey, 1/2 water......and it cost $9 for a small glass. As slow as she was, the server was friendly, and the hostess was really cool. I definitely won't be back..........and if any of my friends try dragging me here again, they're catching a heavy smack in the back of their head. read more

The owner has turned into a real prick though, and he's got two new idiot bouncers doing the enforcing. They create the illusion of a line while they're just really waiting for the owner's friends to show up. I ended up here by accident for my friends birthday party. Through a recommendation, he was supposed to reserve the other Horus on 10th street but he mistakingly chose this one. I'm glad he did.. I don't smoke hookah that often, but I think it's a great activity for a large group. We had 6, so it fit the mold. Upon arrival, we had to hand them a credit card and an ID which they said they woudln't charge (and so far they haven't). The ambiance was pretty festive, they had a DJ spinning mostly electronic/hip hop mixes. People kept to their own tables though. We ordered the Egyptian Pharaoh and Sex on the Beach hookahs. I would say they were both above average, but no where near the best i've ever tried. What I did appreciate was that they had an employee constantly come by fixing the coals. The waitress, was attentive and I rarely waited long to get a drink re-fill. They also upon finding out it was my friend's birthday brought us a free round of shots. Speaking of their alcohol, that is one of my few complaints. I felt like their drinks were not very strong. They also have a service charge of 20% automatically added to the check, but it was certainly worth it. We even met the manager and he was a very friendly guy. If you like good food you mite want to come a little earlier for some low key music a very relaxing atmosphere. They have good food at least to my tasting. Now if your a hookah lover you hit the spot... They have some of the best hookah I've tasted, not to mention great coal service... You won't ever sit there waiting for coal and you hookah will always be putting out smoke. If you like good music then weekends have what you want, The djs in the place have a good music ranging a wide variety of genres, in other words something for everyone. Service is pretty good as well... All in all its a very clean place with good service and great food and hookah, something to try when your in the city. read more

The hookah was good and if it ever went out one of the guys would come and change the charcoal. The drinks are horrible so if you do come here the things to look forward to is the hookah, the food and live belly dancing. I've gone once in the daytime and the music was just background music and on a Friday night there played pop and Latin music. Hookah: cool. I recommend apple. Better places in Chicago, but Horus has better music. Seating is not that comfortable, but decent. That said, waitress service was slow, food even slower. For a Saturday night, you would think they would have more people running the kitchen, but I swear they must have had one person only. After an hour, the food finally arrived. It was good, but the wait is ridiculous. Similarly, the $20/person minimum was a downside, esp. since we weren't told about it until 20 minutes into the night. It wouldn't have been a big deal, but 6 people can only smoke/eat/drink so much without incurring waste. Also, we were seated between other tables and the waitress kept having us move around like musical chairs for no apparent reason. The MAIN reason why this place gets downgraded is their dishonesty. Gratuity is included in the bill, fine. However, when you charge a credit card more than is on the bill, that is not cool. Yes, it is only $5 more, but adding it without our permission and rushing us to sign off on it ("to clear the table") is an unfair, bad business practice and I would not recommend anyone to go to a place with such policies. read more

Now they force a minimum...I think $30 for each person. The service also got much worse. They've made the place sexier inside but it's not fun anymore. If you go, just go for the hookah which is still the best around, chico comes through to change the coal very often. Good hookah and drinks. I would avoid coming to this place on the weekends with a group of people. The waiters will definitely try to make you order tons of drinks and food. Oh yea there is a minimum per person on the weekend....... Each person in the group has to spend a minimum of $30. Overall a good experience on a weeknight. Visited on a Saturday night and was immediately seated. The set up was pretty cool and comfortable. Plenty of room between tables, didn't feel like you were on top of anyone. Service was quick and attentive. Hookah was okay and constantly refilled without even asking. Music was excellent, they had a DJ who mixed very well. From Spanish to hip hop to Arabic tunes it created a good vibe. Belly dancer also came around and pulled off a few moves, although I wasn't impressed she was very good looking. I would visit again. I had my birthday party here last night. I was able to make a reservation for 20 with no money down, no hassle, no lines, and no velvet rope. The only stipulations were only a 2 hr party and a $20pp limit. Though, that's not hard to reach when it's hookah, drinks, AND dinner. They were even considerate enough to tell me when we reached our limit and let me know I had the option of cutting off service. One star is downgraded becaus the belly dancer was way late and also because the music was REALLY REALLY REALLY loud. It turns out a speaker blew, so they overcompensated with the speaker on top of our party space. Made it hard to talk. However, I would definitely return with a group because I don't know anyplace that would give that kind of service on a Saturday with no problems and no $ upfront. read more

I've been looking for my hookah spot in NY, and I think I just found it. I was walking around alphabet city one night and noticed what seemed to be a mini hookah district around this block. Horus caught my eye though, because I could see big pieces of fruit bubbling in the hookah. It reminded me of the height of my hookah enthusiasm in college when we would carve a bowl out of an apple and smoke double apple shisha out of it, for an effectively triple-apple experience. So we came for the hookah and it did not disappoint. In fact, it damn near blew my mind. Not only did they put fruit in the base (apple, citrus and a pineapple ring), but they CARVED THE BOWL OUT OF A FUCKING PINEAPPLE. The hookah was beautiful, and the coals were real natural charcoal, not chemically-induced quick-starting discs of flavor-ruination. If you're a hookah lightweight, take it easy here - these hookahs are a potent combination of a well-packed bowl pf tobacco, plenty of hot coals and a extra-broad pineapple bowl making for some of the thickest, most delicious smoke I've ever had out of a hookah. Then just when I thought it couldn't get any better, they gave us a fresh bowl with new coals and more tobacco, free of charge. I've seen places charge $10 or $15 for a refill. To be fair, the arab-ish techno music was too loud and not fitting for a chill hookah sesh. A live band started as we were leaving, and they were quite good, but also loud. The decor falls a bit short of being awesome and is straight up tacky (wtf is with those cave walls? are we supposed to feel like we're hiding out in a cave in afghanistan...sorry, I digress). The service was inattentive to us, lavish to others who seemed to know the staff. Oh, we also got the moroccan tea, which was served in a gorgeous little pot and glass cups. It was a very strong mint tea and was unpleasantly bitter from what seemed like some over-steeped black tea in there too. Despite it's faults, the hookah was earthshattering. Also they'll do other nice extras like different fruit bowls, liquor flavored tobacco and (my favorite) sangria or red wine in the base (which I can tell you from past experience takes the whole flavored-smoke affair to another level entirely). read more

Hookah : We got the Fresh Pineapple flavor :) Our hookah lasted for like everr..which is a good thing! There is a sitting area outside for people who don't want to do unlimited drinks. If you want to sit in the lounge inside, they will make u do $30/person which I thought was pretty stupid. One thing I loved about this place other than their hookah flavors was the MUSIC. It's amazingly good! Especially when you're hookah-ing and when you're mind is blowing in the air...with the hookah smoke lol ;) The decor isn't that cute..which is the only down part of this place. This is our go-to for hookah in the city! Hookah is consistently great (we like watermelon mint with a pineapple head and a couple times with the ice hose which is 10 or 15 dollars extra), food is yummy (I'm partial to the lentil soup--hands down my favorite aside from homemade) and prices are decent. Service is great and the waitresses are attentive and friendly, but never intrusive. Be sure to double check to see if tip was included--my friend and I double tipped a couple times not realizing it. Music is a good mix and often there is live music and a belly dancer. Once we were treated to an impromptu show by a patron who was also a singer which was really fun and we thought it was cool that they let her sing. We also like to meet here on weekdays to catch up after work and it's always a nice scene where we can enjoy our conversation. As the night goes on, more people come in and it becomes a bit louder, so I'm usually heading out around 10 pm or so. I'm more of a lounge person, so I prefer to come here on the early side either after weekend brunch or during the week. I highly recommend this spot as a place where you can enjoy your hookah, food, drinks and music in peace. We always have a good time when we make it a Horus night! This is a place where they remember you if you come in and will know your usual, which I personally love. We have some other hookah spots we frequent but Horus always feels like home to me. read more

So hard to find a one stop spot, but this could be it! We came here after the lines to Le Souk were once again ridiculously down the street yet conveniently closer to 6th street. We got a table for 12 people quickly and without a problem and a hookah soon followed. I love that they have more creative and delicious flavors other than saaaaay, just "apple." The space was pretty big, in the very long sense. It just kept going! We sat across from the lounge-y coushin area. I'm actually glad we didn't sit there because it looked too comfortable. I might have fallen asleep! Especially considering we were there until after 3am. But I'm getting ahead of myself! So we had just come from dinner, but the menu looked too tempting to resist. From a friend's previous experience we knew that the portions would come quite large so we went with the garlic fries. Yum! Really, really tasty! My favorite part however was the music! Talk about selecction and variety! The DJ played everything from SexyBack (yay!) to merengue to reggae to hip hop to Britney Spears to a little dance-techno. Good stuff! I was quite pleased. Good music is hard to find! Plus kudos to our waitress who kindly kept bringing us glasses of water after glasses of water without a roll of the eyes or a complaint to hydrate our dancing bodies.
