This place is LEGIT!!! Ive been to every sushi joint on the east coast and feel so blessed that Hoshi Ya has come to Oak Sq...YAAAAAAAY!!!! My first time there we ordered A LOT of food to get a grasp of how this place is....everything was AMAZING. My favorite part about Hoshi Ya is they put tempura crumbs in there spicy rolls and use the right kind of spicy mayo. Also have a really great menu of specialty rolls. Had some of the Udon soup with shrimp tempura and a poached egg.....REAL GOOD! The best part of all is that it is one of the most affordable sushi places around without compromising quality. Yayy! Finally a sushi takeout place that is good quick and affordable. I have been craving sushi for days and after my workout last night I stopped in this place. Ordered the maki combo (3 rolls for 14 dollars) and sat and waited. It was ready within 10 minutes. And it was delicious. Prob wouldnt want to dine in here. It is tiny. But awesome for takeout and I saw they have free delivery! Very excited about this new find! Since I moved to Brighton I've tried a few sushi places & this is by far the best. My favorites are the Crazy Maki & Spicy Tuna Maki. I usually order vegetable tempura or gyoza dumplings for an app. Only a few times the delivery took a while & the tempura was a little on the soggy side..but hey..no ones perfect. After consuming a lot of sushi over 5 years in Boston, I would rate Hoshi-YA the best for quick sushi. The quality is excellent, and the fish tastes extremely fresh. Their rolls often exceed others from fancier establishments. I have had a couple late-night orders where the avocado was a bit underripe, and the tuna wasn't at its best, but I have never been disappointed by the spicy salmon roll or salmon sashimi. The "cash deal" lets you order 2-3 rolls and miso soup for less than $15. Go with the salmon and you will not be disappointed. read more

Despite all the good reviews my takeout experience tonight was not great: Miso soup - Terrible it was all salty broth with maybe one little cube of tofu floating besides a sad sliver of seaweed. Philadelphia maki - The salmon was larger than the piece of cream cheese, a good sign. This was good. Negi-Chu Toro maki - This was good as well the Toro was chopped up, which is a sign of sub-par cuts of fatty tuna. In Japan they always leave the pieces intact as a sign of quality. Unaju Entree - "broiled eel over a bed of rice and pickles", I would rename this dish "Four paper thin slices of Unagi (The same frozen unagi filet you can buy whole at the 88 market for $7 bucks) on a 1.5pound bed of rice without any pickles", How do you forget the picked vegetables? and for $11 a complete disappointment. I recommend only getting maki at this place. read more

I picked up food from here based on the good reviews here and since it was very conveniently located for me. There's no place to really sit that I noticed so this is really just for pick up or delivery. I really enjoyed the black caterpillar maki and the shrimp shumai was good. I would order from here again and it hit the spot but it's nothing spectacular - maybe closer to a 3.5 stars. The spicy tuna within the roll was minced which I know some people are not a fan of and take it as a bad sign of the quality of the fish. In this specific preparation of the black caterpillar maki with everything else going on, I didn't mind. Price is good. read more

I love their menu because it has so many new things for me to try and I can honestly say there hasn't been anything I've gotten that I haven't liked. I'm so happy there is a sushi place near Oak Square and right at the 57/501/503 bus stop! Their maki is very good and they are extremely well priced. They have a great deal of variety in their menu. There are other sushi places that just don't offer that in the area. I know it's the least Japanese but I'm s sucker for sweet potato rolls and their Idaho Maki is delicious! I would order from this place again. I would give it 3.5 stars. Some of the rolls I had were fantastic and generous (Tuna jalapeno special). Some others were okay, and needed improvement. Specifically the spicy tuna which is a staple at any Sushi place was average. I am a huge fan of the spicy tuna rolls from Super Fusion, and Fugakyu. It's funny. I get that sushi is expensive, but last week I ate at another sushi place - $65 - and the amount of food we got for that was so small that it essentially amounted to an appetizer, and we had second dinner later that night. So, fast forward to Hoshi Ya. Always reliable. But I had forgotten about the amount of food they give you. We spent $50 here and there was enough food for two meals (for 2 people). An incredible amount of food. Well, incredible by sushi restaurant standards. I believe the official term is 'generous serving size'. It also was delicious. It's certainly not your 5-star best of boston kind of place. But for a neighborhood sushi place, it is far above the competition (except for Super Fusion in Watertown). I would give it 4.5 stars if I could. The only reason I am not giving it 5 stars is that I don't want to diminish my ratings for Super Fusion in Watertown and OYA in Natick. Really delicious food and would absolutely order from here again. The Miso soup was still hot on arrival and absolutely delicious. The Crazy Maki was absolutely incredible and I think my favorite of all of the things I got. The Volcano Maki was also delicious and very fresh. Overall would order here again. I ordered a lot and all of it was either flavorless or lacked the proper proportions of fish to other ingredients. One or the other was overpowering in each roll. The sushi itself didn't taste super fresh and the wasabi and ginger were the cheapest restaurant depot crap. Literally had zero flavor. It seemed as if the rolls were just hastily thrown together. I could make a better roll. The spicy rolls just had some mayonnaise that didn't even seem spicy. In addition, the mayo was just thrown in between the other ingredients. It wasn't even mixed in so it was evenly distributed. The rice wasn't great either. The price was average for sushi but overpriced based on this reviewers food. read more

Just ordered the Chirashi entree, not bad, I was kinda suprised by the full sashimi style pieces of sashimi. (I am used to having a chirashi with alot of little pieces of sashimi to mix in with the rice) However, it is pretty good amount-wise with sashimi and I did not expect a piece of tamago to be included (kinda happy about this), especially for later at night. Hoshi-Ya is a welcome addition to the neighborhood. Was the sushi amazing? No, but it was good, about what I expected from a new, inexpensive, small place. I had all veggie rolls (despite liking raw fish, I developed an unfortunate allergy to it); they were tasty and just the right amount. If you're looking for higher end sushi, this isn't your place. But for decent, reasonably priced take-out sushi, I'd recommend this place. I'll certainly be ordering again. read more

Coming from someone who is very picky about sushi, this place definitely gets my approval!!! Their sushi is amazing!!! I recommend the hamachi sushi and sashimi! It literally just melts in your mouth! All their sushi is super fresh. For those of you who want fresh sushi for a reasonable price this is definitely the place to go. Decent food and cheap but my first delivery just went like this. I'm on crutches and live in Watertown where there is ample street parking. Delivery guy pulls up to my house, sees me standing in front of the screen door on crutches and proceeds calls me and says "Delivery here" I look back at him - point to my foot and say, "I'm waiting at the door" He repeats himself again "Delivery here" I'm POSITIVE he sees me but instead I insist "I'm waiting at the door. I am on crutches and cannot do stairs." He huffs and hangs up on me. Gets out of his car - walks 5 steps - hands me my food and slip. I sign and return it to him. He takes one look at it and says "You forgot to tip." Are you kidding me? I had to hassle you to actually bring the food to my door even though you can SEE I am unable to walk to you. read more

Hoshi ya makes some pretty tasty maki! I am really psyched that there is finally a sushi place close to Oak Sq. The prices are very good on the maki. I really hope it doesn't go out of business while so many shitty restaurants survive around here. I got a lunch special with a crazy maki and a black forest maki. The crazy maki had crisp tempura on the outside of the shrimp, with the soft rice and crunchy cukes. It was perfect texture in a huge bite in my opinion. The black forest had tasty sweet potato and eel. It's nice looking with black roe on the outside and a good blend of flavors. The salad was refreshing and the miso was ok. Probably not the best miso, but I'm not really a big fan anyhow. I need to try the sashimi obviously. Worth having if you like sushi and not getting ripped off at Fugakyu. read more

Stick to the sushi and don't make any special requests. The fish is good quality, but everything else about my order was subpar. The chicken/shrimp teriyaki, gyoza and other ingredients in the House Bent Box were totally mediocre - flavorless, low quality, and imitation crab stick was included as "sashimi"... What a joke. They also made more than half my 2 sashimi orders salmon after telling me they would sub it out, and they didn't include any sauce for the tempura that made up the bulk of the box. read more

This was alwayss my go to for sushi delivery, but I will have to reconsider next time. * I would usually rate Hoshi Ya as a solid 4, clean fish, not too much rice, great timing for delivery But today they really disappointed me. I ordered delivery on Foodler as usual, but this time I edited my delivery comments to say "please ring buzzer 4, do not call" because I had lent my phone out to a friend that night. Most restaurants read those notes- incase of allergies and whatnot. While I usually would understand that the delivery driver may still call- I left the front door open as a precaution and my name is easily read on the mailboxes located right by the front door so they could have easily rung the bell or knocked on my door. (1st floor can't miss it) I found my food on the ground 2 hours later, while it was nice of them to leave it- I felt like they didn't put in any effort to full-fill my order. I'm know this was a mistake, and everyone deserves a second chance, but please, please read your customers notes, we're tipping you. read more

I ordered a delivery from them, so I can't comment about anything regarding eating in. For dinner, I ordered the miso soup, California Roll, Smoked Salmon Mango Maki Roll, and Idaho Roll. I was pleasantly surprised when my first mouthful of Miso Soup was flavorful and bold. It almost reminded me of my favorite miso soup back home. Next up was the sushi. The biggest thing I can say is that everything is FRESH. The Smoked Salmon Mango Maki Roll was a bit unusual, but all the flavors seemed to balance each other out and it wasn't too sweet. The Idaho Roll (fried sweet potato) was a bit unusual, but still very fresh and flavorful. Overall, this is some of the best sushi that I've had in Boston. I would recommend it hands down! read more

I noticed the prices here were slightly lower than my usual sushi place, so I decided to give it a try. However, the take-out I ordered was extremely disappointing. I got the chirashi bowl, and the uni nigiri. I am a HUGE sashimi fan and I couldn't even finish the fish in the chirashi bowl because it was so bland and watery-tasting. The uni portions were very stingy and tasted faintly chemical, as if they had some kind of preservative in them. The miso soup wasn't bad, but I will definitely not be ordering from Hoshi Ya again. The edamame and gyoza appetizers were tasty but the salmon nigiri was nearly flavorless, almost gushy, and too cold and the crab sticks in my California roll tasted foul. My fiancee and I just had some delivered. We got the Caterpillar Maki, Spicy Escolar Maki, and Crazy Maki. They were awesome! This isn't upscale sushi, but it's really fresh and really, really good. After tipping the driver, it was $25 even - basically the price you'd pay for 3 rolls at Shaws - but this is infinitely better. I'm not a sushi aficionado, but I imagine you'd be hard-pressed to find a better value. Bottom line: Hoshi Ya is fantastic and we'll be back (or have them bring it back to us). read more

Best sushi I've found so far in this area! My favorite is the Baked Salmon Roll. It is perfectly delicious. I always order online and their menu is very descriptive which is so helpful. Delivery is quick and the food is still hot. The delivery charge is very low too. This place is just all around fantastic. I love it! read more
