So, we LOVE Hoss's, this review is for a new menu item only, regular food quality, service, cleanliness is still and always perfect. I ordered the new menu item, The Beef & Cheddar Sandwich with the Perogis. The Roast Beef & Cheddar Sandwich was just ok, had decent flavor especially with the horseradish sauce which was the star but the the beef was very tough, chewy and dry. The French fried onions on top were non existent. The Perogis had absolutely ZERO flavor, couldn't even tell what they were stuffed with. My wife asks me all the time, "Would you order it again?" Overall, this was a terrible experience. The night before we ate at Gettysburg Eddie's and were sooo impressed. We were ready for a good steak though so our waitress suggested that some locals eat at Hoss'. We went and spent $130 on food that I could've cooked better in my kitchen at home. We were so disappointed. Melinda was our server and just overall seemed bothered and fake when dealing with us. My husband's steak was not edible. It was incredibly burnt on the outside and not medium rare at all inside. The food took forever to get to us even though the restaurant only had 4-5 other tables. He tried to cover it in ketchup and still couldn't eat it. Melinda walked by and just said "how's everything going" once. She noticed he wasn't eating but did absolutely nothing about it. I felt like I stepped back in time to the 1970s when my parents used to take us to Sizzler restaurant. We were seated immediately and our drink orders taken. We both ordered the 6 oz filet and it was cooked to our liking. Juicy, easy to cut and flavorful. The baked potato was tiny but still cooked well. My husband got fries and said they were not bad just not great. We were the youngest table there for the majority of our dinner until a family with young kids came in. Quiet and very 1975 feeling. Hoss was a great experience! Since Ruby Tuesday closed down, I was always looking for a place with an all you can eat salad bar. Truly hard to find so it was nice of them to have that. Went there for a birthday party of 30 people Sunday the 14th,the waitstaff was corterious it was clean but they were way to short staffed to deal with the amount of people even though they were notified a week ahead. My wife ordered steak tips, rice and mushrooms. They brought her steak mashed potatoes and mushrooms, she sent it back,10 minutes later they brought out the same steak rice and mushrooms, she sent the same cold steak back a second time. 10 minutes later they returned with the same steak cut up and microwaved till it was shoe leather, it was to be rare and it wasn't steak tips.the party was almost over before the kitchen sent out steak tips that were edible. Our bill was 76 dollars for 2 people and I don't know what the other 28 people spent. I can assure you that we all felt like it was a mistake going there and with service like that hopefully unsuspecting tourists will keep you from closing. Going to Hoss's back in 1990 when I was in college was a real treat. It was the best deal for a night out without drinking and a way to get a good meal in apart from the college cafeteria or food court. Now, 35 years later, I wax nostalgic when I go to the soup, bread and salad bar and everything down to the peas, mini ham cubes, hardboiled egg, cheese, and dressing feels and tastes EXACTLY like it did 35 years ago. Hoss' Steakhouse is a favorite with Gettysburg tourists and the Civil War reenacment community. The steaks are juicy and delicious (particulaly my favorite - the ribeye!) the seafood is delectable (especially the crab cakes and baked whitefish), and you could make a meal off the soup and salad bar alone! The soup, salad and dessert bar was good. The selections on the salad bar were fresh. 3 kinds of bread (rolls, garlic bread and cinnamon bread) are available as well as 3 soups. Can't comment on the soup as we skipped it. We started with the soft pretzel appetizer. It comes with 4 pretzels and a warm cheese dip. They were nice and soft and warm. Yum! The kid had spaghetti and a meatball from the kids' menu. Angel hair pasta came with a scoop of sauce and one meatball. The kid didn't eat it, but I tried it and it wasn't bad. Nicely seasoned and not dry. Hubby and I both ordered the 13oz NY strip dinners - his rare and mine mid-rare like always. First, they serve it to you on a hot "sizzling" platter. I hate when places do this (for the record, our favorite local steakhouse does the same thing, but we know to ask for regular plates when we order). The problem with those "cast iron" platter things is that your steak will go over your cook temp unless you order anything other than well done - and seriously, who would do that to a steak? We rescued ours by asking for regular plates when they came to the table, but alas they still went over. Again, this is not prime beef and you get what you pay for, so we weren't upset or anything. Just note to others who eat their steak the way it's supposed to be. My loaded baked potato was nice and loaded (though a little small) and Hubby's fries were ok. My family just loves this place and has come here for many years on visits to Gettysburg and the nearby annual apple festival. Everyone was in town for a wedding and we took a trip up for old time's sake. Their service was wonderful, the staff cordial and efficient. Plenty of convenient parking. Able to accommodate a large group easily. I found the salad bar very underwhelming - only iceberg lettuce for greens. No kale, leaf lettuce, radicchio or anything like that. Most of the salad bar seemed dedicated to unhealthy "toppings" and processed dressings. A caesar salad ordered off the menu turned out to be iceberg lettuce with "caesar" dressing from a bottle put in a plastic cup. I wasn't expecting a classic caesar's salad with anchovies and a coddled egg yolk, but it was also very disappointing. Looking at the crab soup in the crock, potatoes were quite evident but no much sign of crabmeat. Our steaks were likewise very lame - way over salted, thin and grisly. I couldn't recommend any of the various steaks ordered by our large party - every one of them was uniformly unsatisfying. The common thread was that every steak ordered - medium rare through medium well done - were consistently burned on one side. On the positive side, the baked sweet potato was very good. However, I would recommend against the "loaded" version with marshmallows and whatever - that combination screamed digestive distress when the waitress explained it to me. Given all the steaks were twenty bucks and up, there must be somewhere better to spend your hard earned currency in Gettysburg. This is a place you'll get a decent meal for the cost. I went with the 6 oz steak which comes with a side and salad, soup and dessert bar for about $13. Is it the best steak I've ever had? No, but it's comparable to a steak you might get at a typical chain restaurant. It was juicy and tasted good. The salad bar has all the salad fixings, a couple types of bread and soups to get started before the food is out, and we were hungry, so it's great to get something right away but hard to not fill up. The dessert bar was also great as they had the typical brownies and sweets, but since I am watching the calories, they had small cups of low fat ice cream, fruit, and jello for a good meal ending sweet taste without going overboard on calories. The place was clean and had a decent amount of parking. CONS: the portions of the food weren't as big as their competitors.
