We decided to give this place a try after reading the impressive reviews. Upon entering the establishment I took in the interesting layout. The first thing that caught my eye was the case display. The glass was so smudged and muddied, I thought I was looking at coleslaw with beer goggles on. There was also a random fly buzzing around, but I was willing to look past all of this in exchange for a really great bagel sandwich. My fiancee and I were looking at the prices and options above the counter but could not escape the feeling we were being watched. The girl behind the counter stared at us, waiting, to the point of making us feel uneasy. I thought the fly that was buzzing around was crawling around on my face or something. We finally decided on getting two sesame seed bagels with scrambled eggs and cheese on each. For six dollars and sixty-six cents we got some good eggs and that was it. First of all, the bagels had about three sesame seeds glued on the outside of each which fell off quickly. The bagels were incredibly disappointing - they were exactly like the bagels you'd find wrapped in cellophane at a convenience store or school cafeteria. The inside of the bagels looked and tasted exactly like Wonderbread. What makes a good bagel? Warm and crispy, right? Well, they looked like they were walking around on a cold, rainy day without an umbrella. Shaped like giant, perfect Lifesavers, we were discussing about whether they were shipped from a factory or not... at least that'd give us a concrete answer to this disappointing waste of money. Edited to reflect current ownership and staff. This place has taken a tumble down hill. Stale bagels. Never enough butter or cream cheese. A bacon egg and cheese sandwich missing the egg. Seriously had to fry an egg at home to complete the sandwich. Great bagels - always fresh, and wonderful egg sandwiches as well. They have a very good coconut flavored coffee which I have never seen anywhere else. They add the milk and sugar for you - just tell them how you want it. Service is friendly and cheerful, though the flow could stand to be improved. I never know if the people standing in line are waiting to order or waiting for their food - can be chaotic when it's busy. Edited to five stars as these are the best bagels in NJ so that whole business about the flow being improved doesn't matter at all. I would edit to six stars if I could. My boyfriend's sister from Portland had to be in the City on business with colleagues. We brought her some real bagels which she said were the best ever. During her business meeting she and her colleagues asked a few interns to pick up the best bagels in the City. I particularly tend to enjoy the food at this small, comfortable establishment. It has come to my attention that there are a few ingredients that employees tend to have trouble getting to. I saw this instantly when one of the employees mumbled to another, "he gets the same thing every f****** time" that is what most places is called "The Regular" but otherwise I shall continue my review. To that the other employee responds "He just does that to piss us off" Now I have no foul intent here. I personally have never had intent to anger employees but now I feel as I am indeed a victim. Visited on a Sunday at about 12:50. They said they were closing in 10 minutes, yet sign at door said they were open to 2:00. I ordered a simple sandwhich of ham and cheese on a bagel with deli mustard. The person asked me what type of mustard wanted. I told her deli mustard and she said they only one type of mustard. I asked her then why did you ask ne? A few minutes went by and she asked n r if I wanted an egg in my sandwich which of course I didn't order. The sandwich itself was also lousy. Sure, I've had some great bagels in New York City, out on Long Island, and elsewhere, but my all-time favorites are in Hackettstown New Jersey. Made fresh every day, they're usually still warm if you buy them in the morning. Neither too hard nor too doughy, these are perfect bagels, available in all the typical varieties. People line up for 'em on the weekend, but the staff (mainly high school kids) keeps the line moving quickly. They offer lots of other food beside bagels (breakfast and lunch items alike), and it's all fine... but really, you want to come here for the phenomenally good bagels. read more

I really like the bagels here. They have a huge variety and are made on premises. So much better than a super market bagel or chain bagel store. Great place to get a dozen bagels to take home. Don't order hot food here. First of all it takes too long to get your food. Then you NEVER get what you order. If you order a pork roll and cheese you get a pork roll and egg. I have gone here fir years. However I have noticed the last few times the bagels are not that good. I usually get an everything bagel, and a lot of the times they're not baked very long. Used to be my go to bagel place, bagels were great. But place seems to be going down hill a bit. Bagels don't seem as good, place is looking a but dirty times i went in and sat to eat, and a few times, barely any cream cheese at all! Maybe a teaspoon worth. Guess I will start going to Budd Lake Bagel which is closer for me anyway. Wish they wouldn't be so stingy on the cream cheese. Same with buttered bagels, like 1-2 pats of butter, but made by teens, so I don't know if they train them to be so stingy or just teens not trained how much to put on. Hot Bagels does what they should well - they produce great bagels, make solid breakfast plates, and have adequate amounts of seating. Walk next door to Quick Chek for bottled beverages, though. I've been a fan of their bagels and sandwiches for over 10 years. I highly recommend their pork roll breakfast sandwich. I'm not a fan of eggs, so when i order this sandwich with no egg, they add extra meat. I never had to ask for it, it's just what they do. Not many places will give you extra meat in lieu of eggs and not charge you more. I've been to their locations in Hackettstown, Flanders, and South Orange. To begin, I had a valupack coupon to this establishment that said "Half price Sandwich Buy 1 sandwich and 2nd sandwich is 50% off" . It expired the first of December the same year and I went on the 7th of November. I ordered two sausage breakfast sandwiches, that were OK... I could have made a better sandwich at home with a bagel that didn't taste like a loaf of bread.... and when it was time to pay, the man ( who seemed to be the owner) didn't take my coupon and told me to "Hold on to it". I have been coming here for years and they were hands-down the best place for bagels and hot coffee. But I am not sure if there's been a management change but the bagels have really changed and not for the better. Often times my bagels are burnt and the coffee has not been nearly as good as it's been in the past. Its time for me to find a new place. My last time there, the person waiting on me appeared very hung over. The top of my salt bagel was placed on the bottom of my wife's sesame bagel and hers on mine. And the coffee was barely hot. After living in DC for 4 years and FL for 2, i can say hands down that no one gets bagels right except for places in NJ/NY. the perfect bagel should be crispy on the outside and doughy--not bready in the inside, always hand rolled. because i live here in timbaktu, this is an easy drive if i don't feel like going to chester bagel (my other go-to spot). my fave is always the everything bagel with their freshly made veggie cream cheese. don't ever buy philadelphia veggie cream cheese. that is a travesty and i mourn the loss of your money. their breakfast sandwiches are quite good, but i've only had the egg and cheese. coffee is coffee, nothing to brag about. the service is awesome and speedy. read more

This used to be my go to bagel place, however, recently they have dropped in quality across the board. Their customer service is mediocre (they used to be so upbeat, friendly, and fast), their bagel breakfast sandwiches have dipped in quality, and the most disappointing thing that changed was their cleanliness. I walked in today to see dozens of flies everywhere in the restaurant, even on the bagels, a definite sign of poor hygiene. Really a shame! read more

I live 3 hours away from my hometown and every time I'm back to visit I make sure to stop here and stock up on bagels. I've converted my husband from thinking Lenders had good bagels (gross!) to knowing how real bagels taste and he's just as obsessed as me. The line can be ridiculous in the morning and on the weekend but it moves pretty quick. They also have the best scallion cream cheese I've ever found. This place is great! read more

These are the best bagels in the area. They have a wide variety and some odd specials. All of the ones I have had are delicious but I usually stick with a salt bagel w/ cream cheese or a taylor ham egg and cheese on an everything bagel. They also have delicious Nova lox. Really you cannot go wrong with any of the varieties of bagels or toppings. They also offer flagels which is just a flat bagel though they are much better suited for sandwiches, a little disappointing that they are more expensive though. On the weekends lines can get a little long and unorganized but the wait is never too bad. read more
