Anyhow the thing was a fun event for the kids, so we grabbed one, yes the donuts by us have them for 1.80, and a whole lot better, but we went. It wasn't bad, it wasn't great, it was a true 5 star. Stopped here for coffee and some sweets for breakfast. This is one of places that my husband and his family used to go for morning breakfasts every morning years ago. They had a good selection of pastries. We bought a cinnamon roll for my stepson, a maple bar for my husband and a orange cranberry scone for me. The cinnamon roll was really good, the frosting was tasty and rich with cream cheese but a little much. To be honest I didn't taste any orange in the scone though I saw some orange zest in there. The scone was also a little doughy for my taste. The service was great but the food and coffee was not so hot. read more

UPDATE: We decided to call them this morning, and they did sell bread, they had one loaf of wheat left. It was small. We also bought one scone to share. Total cost was $9.20. There was a tip jar there, but with those prices, the change went into pocket. The scone was good and didn't need the sugary glaze crusting over it. The bread was strange looking and tasting...a sweet flavor with an almost rubbery, papery chew, and there was some sort of glaze on it as well. Maybe an egg wash? Ugh. Not happy. Thought we could get some fresh baked bread here, like the website promotes, but there was none. When asked if they sell bread, the answer was not now, then turned away. No other explanation...not interested in my business? The online menus should have given a clue, since none of them had breads listed, but figure it would be worth the drive, since the opening page mentioned fresh breads daily. Sheesh. read more

Eggs on one are super soggy (powdered eggs?) Weirdest breakfast burrito ive ever had. Everything was wonderful at Hot Lava. They were super busy (it's July, what do you expect?) - yet every single employee greeted our group with a big smile and happy demeanor. Long lines so get there early! Very nice donuts, soft and fresh. The standout for us was the strudel both apple and Marionberry. Beautiful cases, cakes look amazing but didn't try one. They do take long to fill boxes because they keep the display with one of each donut and trays of everything are separate so be prepared to wait! Owner is very nice. A great bakery in Sunriver. Been here for quite some time. Always busy in the am. Donuts are HUGE. Like monster. They have the Big Foot maple bar which is bomb and bigger than your hand. Also Huge cinnamon rolls of different flavors. Donut rings of small and big - I got a huge chocolate donut ring with sprinkles and the big foot. Good pasties and donuts here. It's on the expensive side for donuts, some of them are up to $3.75 or so, but those are the big ones, and this is Sun River village so places know they can charge a bit more. As for the donuts, the bearclaws are my favorite, they are the expensive ones, but as big as two regular sized donuts. Checkout can be a little slow, but the service has been good for us overall. Just busy, especially in the mornings. It is clean and there is ample area outside for sitting in the sun. Overall, pretty good! read more

I discovered this amazing place while they were closed for remodeling and couldn't wait to try it. They didn't disappoint! The breakfast sandwiches and burritos are made right in front of me instead of most places where they just warm up something that's already put together. Very delicious! We came here yesterday and I completely agree with the other folks that state that the customer service at this place is seriously lacking. As a sun river home owner, we have been coming to this place for many years. We like to support the local businesses vs the other coffee chains in the village. However after yesterday's experience I have no desire to come back. The young girl , who mind you we were her only customers, who was working yesterday was so incredibly rude , I literally didn't even get myself a drink even though we walked there in a snowstorm. Any question that was asked of her was met with incredible attitude and she wouldn't look us in the eyes. When you pay 6.50 for a children's hot chocolate and 9 dollars for a smoothie I expect at the very least polite service if not someone who can answer a question in a pleasant manner. We had a great experience at Hot Lava! It was empty when we arrived and we weren't sure what we wanted yet so we let the people behind us go first. That group ended up being 15 people! I was surprised at how quickly the line went and it was only a matter of time before we got our food and drinks plus the staff were all very friendly. The pastries were fresh and amazing. Hands down the best scone I've ever had. My mom went back two days in a row for their berry strudel! I was so excited to try this place. I basically skipped in the door. Sadly, I was quickly and sorely disappointed. I came in for breakfast. They serve breakfast burritos and breakfast sandwiches. They were out of both bagels and croissants at 9:45, so burrito it was. I ordered the Lava, which is like a Mexican burrito with ham, egg, jalapeños and red onion with salsa and sour cream. I ordered mine minus jalapeños and red onion. I also ordered coffee for my hubs and a chai for me. My husband special ordered his burrito because neither of the burrito options tempted him. When our burritos came, they were a nice size. Definitely shareable. My package said "no onion" but the burrito was full of them. And jalapeños. :( No sour cream, which is one of the best parts! I picked apart my burrito to eat around the things I didn't want since there were so many. I left half the burrito there unfortunately. My husbands was "fine." The coffee and chai were good but so hot! Too hot! The chocolate frosted donut was moist and rich, they totally got that right. Atmosphere wise, this place could use an update. There was food all over the floor and the case when you walk in is empty, which looks bad. The exit door slams anytime a person walks out so you have this nice shake about every five minutes. Overall, poor selection of breakfast food on this experience, they got my order wrong and the door is seriously obnoxious. I can't recommend. read more

My son and I stopped here for lunch on a Wednesday afternoon. We walked in from 80 degree heat to a sweltering 90 something inside of this "bakery". . Since there aren't many places to sit down and eat we didnt care too much and just chose to get our sandwiches to go. I had beaded sweat running down the back of my neck leaving this place twenty minutes later. ew. It took several minutes for anyone to even acknowledge us. My son ordered a kids turkey and cheese and I ordered the Paulina Peak - chicken ranch and bacon sandwich. The person who took our order was very ho hum and was not real friendly and seemed quite bored with her job. I am not looking for a song and a dance but a simple smile and hello would be nice. I guess they just know you dont have many choices in Sunriver for casual take out so they can be however they want to be. Once we ordered our sandwiches we waited for at least 10 minutes before the cashier rang us up. The gal making espresso drinks kept barking orders at people in the back to come help. Everyone seemed miserable. i guess I would be too - working in a 90 degree climate. Cant the owner invest in some fans or a small a/c for the summer months? The people in front of me waited for their drinks to be made for the entire time I was waiting for my sandwich. They were still waiting when I left (10 minutes later - 20 total for two sandwiches!). The sandwiches, two bottled pops and a milk was over 17.00. The sandwiches were ok, nothing special. The french bread they came on was the best part of the sandwich. Meh. Won't be back. Sunriver may not have a ton of choices but I would rather eat a pbj from the supermarket than go back to this place.
