My son and I stopped here for lunch on a Wednesday afternoon. We walked in from 80 degree heat to a sweltering 90 something inside of this "bakery". . Since there aren't many places to sit down and eat we didnt care too much and just chose to get our sandwiches to go. I had beaded sweat running down the back of my neck leaving this place twenty minutes later. ew. It took several minutes for anyone to even acknowledge us. My son ordered a kids turkey and cheese and I ordered the Paulina Peak - chicken ranch and bacon sandwich. The person who took our order was very ho hum and was not real friendly and seemed quite bored with her job. I am not looking for a song and a dance but a simple smile and hello would be nice. I guess they just know you dont have many choices in Sunriver for casual take out so they can be however they want to be. Once we ordered our sandwiches we waited for at least 10 minutes before the cashier rang us up. The gal making espresso drinks kept barking orders at people in the back to come help. Everyone seemed miserable. i guess I would be too - working in a 90 degree climate. Cant the owner invest in some fans or a small a/c for the summer months? The people in front of me waited for their drinks to be made for the entire time I was waiting for my sandwich. They were still waiting when I left (10 minutes later - 20 total for two sandwiches!). The sandwiches, two bottled pops and a milk was over 17.00. The sandwiches were ok, nothing special. The french bread they came on was the best part of the sandwich. Meh. Won't be back. Sunriver may not have a ton of choices but I would rather eat a pbj from the supermarket than go back to this place. I like businesses that act like they want your business rather than they are doing you a favor by allowing you to spend your money there. read more

We had a great experience at Hot Lava! It was empty when we arrived and we weren't sure what we wanted yet so we let the people behind us go first. That group ended up being 15 people! I was surprised at how quickly the line went and it was only a matter of time before we got our food and drinks plus the staff were all very friendly. The pastries were fresh and amazing. Hands down the best scone I've ever had. My mom went back two days in a row for their berry strudel! To the people complaining about the prices being too high, it is Sunriver afterall...everything is expensive. I would much rather pay the extra money to help support a local business! read more

The donuts here are so freaking delicious! I hate donuts- but the maple bars here are outstanding. Their donuts are not overly sweet and do not make me feel sick. My family goes here for breakfast every morning on our annual trip to SunRiver. The coffee is also delicious, I might enjoy it more than Brewed Awakenings (coffee shop in the village). Plus they have almond milk- woot woot! Service is a hit or miss. I've had some wonderful ladies and I have also had service that was rather curt. But, in the end all is good! Make sure you get here early'ish if you want specific treats. Often times they sell out of treats later in the morning. Seriously, the scones, muffins, donuts, and truly every treat here is delicious. Give it a try. read more

We came here yesterday and I completely agree with the other folks that state that the customer service at this place is seriously lacking. As a sun river home owner, we have been coming to this place for many years. We like to support the local businesses vs the other coffee chains in the village. However after yesterday's experience I have no desire to come back. The young girl , who mind you we were her only customers, who was working yesterday was so incredibly rude , I literally didn't even get myself a drink even though we walked there in a snowstorm. Any question that was asked of her was met with incredible attitude and she wouldn't look us in the eyes. When you pay 6.50 for a children's hot chocolate and 9 dollars for a smoothie I expect at the very least polite service if not someone who can answer a question in a pleasant manner. While the caramel roll was top notch, the coffee left something to be desired. Caramel roll: soft, gooey, loaded with pecans and cinnamon, and perfectly baked. Coffee: mocha was incredibly sweet, almost no coffee flavor, didn't even finish the drink. Chai latte was way too sweet, and nothing special. Worst service ever. Barista was one of the most unfriendly people I've come in contact with. She was rude and condescending and had terrible people skills. The gal who made our food was not much better. Extremely rude when our beeper went off and we went to get our food-- a $7 avocado toast which consisted of half a slice of bread sliced paper thin and 4 thin slices of avocado-- unreal! And to top it off, the tables outside were filthy. I understand people are short staffed as things open back up after COVID and have a ton of patience for that but this experience went way beyond. I needed a birthday cake for my daughter and niece but didn't have time to place an order ahead of time. When I called Hot Lava on the morning of my daughter's birthday, they told me they had one fresh unclaimed cake that they could put aside for me. When I arrived for pickup they offered to put a birthday message on it for free. Though satisfied with the customer service, I was most concerned with the taste and appearance of the cake since I had no choice in either. But the vanilla cake with chocolate frosting and cherry filling was delicious and a hit at our party. The cake design (flowers and a butterfly) turned out to be just perfect for the occasion. Hot Lava saved the (birth)day and I highly recommend getting your cakes here and save yourself a trip out to Downtown Bend! read more

My husband would kill me if I gave this spot anything less than 4-stars. He grew up visiting Sunriver for family vacation and the Bear Claw Donuts they sell here transport him to his childhood. Good donuts if you're into glazed ones, I usually prefer old fashioned donuts so I'm not a huge fan. But they're still pretty good. There are 3 coffee shops in The Village at Sunriver. 1. Starbucks (come on, people, support local!!!) 2. Brewed Awakenings (talk about identity crisis, the place calls itself "COFFEE HOUSE" in all caps then "Brewed Awakenings" in teeny tiny letters that you have to look for) 3. Hot Lava Baking & Coffee Company (go here!!) If you've never been to The Village, Hot Lava can be very frustrating to find if not walking IN The Village. Cell coverage in the area can be spotty so Google navigation might not be any help. And, signage on the back of the buildings is easy to miss, especially for buildings that are on the north (Abbot Drive) side of the shopping center when most people tend to park on the south side. Hot Lava is in Building 17 at the NE corner of the shopping center near the bike rental places and other fun activities (on the complete opposite end of the property as the 2 other coffee joints). The Pavilion is right across from Hot Lava. Now that you've found the place... Yep, the baked goods are large. I saw some of the fabled donuts and while they looked tasty and big enough to feed a small family, I opted for a yummy Carmel Pecan Roll which was the size of the plate it was served on. A guy next to me enjoyed his breakfast burrito so much that as soon as he finished it, he ordered another. The place can seat ~10 people somewhat comfortably inside, with another 6 or so crowded at a counter at the window if needed. There's also some limited seating outside. The place is small but if you time it right you can find a place to sit and chill. The wifi was adequate for surfing the web while watching the steady stream of people come through the line. This place is smart, you enter from one door and place your breakfast order and select your bakery items then move to the register where you order your coffee. Then, it's out a different door. The line kept moving and the only bottle neck was at the end where people waited for coffee but the coffee wait was never long. I got a mocha, which was fine. Not the best I've ever had but it worked. It was pretty sweet which I don't have a problem with but others might. About the only other thing worth mentioning is the staff, which was friendly despite being crazy busy. They did a good job of keeping the non-stop line moving and customers seemed happy so... ... yeah, go to Hot Lava, eat a giant donut and support a local business that all things considered, does a pretty good job. read more

This place is amazing, Last summer they made my sons birthday cake which was amazing (people still talk about it), but I didn't review because we didn't have anything else there...well on our last visit to Sunriver that changed! We tried their breakfast sandwich (made to order), breakfast burrito (The size of my face!), scones (wonderful) and several cookies and cupcakes--all amazing. Super friendly, and just wonderful...I almost forgot to mention the donuts, which were legit! We have been coming to Hot Lava for years! Sadly, after their original professional baker left the business, the donuts went downhill quite fast. After several rocky years, we were on the fence about going back but ultimately because of tradition we biked over and we were pleasantly surprised. Our donuts were fluffy, sweet, and downright delicious. We recommend the regular circle donuts over the big foot (even though the novelty is awesome). Way to go Hot Lava! My husband and I were blessed with the chance to stay in SunRiver during our honeymoon, and while we knew absolutely nothing about the area, we found Hot Lava Baking & Coffee Co. very quickly. Pro Tip: it's easier to park behind it if you're driving around the SunRiver complex looking for it at a ridiculously early freezing cold morning hour, as you technically are supposed to walk through their little village to reach it. We loved their freshly baked breakfast sandwiches that had much more flavor and depth than their chain competition across the shopping plaza. Their cinnamon twist was my absolute favorite sweet treat, and my husband was fond of quite a number of the sweeter side of their display. They had prices you'd expect in a luxury community; they're about 15%-30% of a markup than what any of that should be charged at but considering they're still going strong, I imagine most will continue to indulge the price gouging. read more

Terrible donut, tasted like it was made with Bisquick. My latte was even worse, it tasted like microwaved milk. We purchased bread here the previous summer and was not impressed with that either. I've been going to this bakery since the 80's and watched it change owners many times over the years, and each time things get worse. Ridiculous! Ordered a birthday cake for my sister at noon, ordered a premade cake at noon to be ready after 4. They charged me $15 expedite fee to write happy birthday and her name (without mentioning it on the phone or when I complained about the price -$45.00 for an 8inch round) the cake was good, but not that good for such a small cake. They also couldn't produce a receipt which would have shown why the price was so high. Go to the grocery store, they rip off tourists here. read more
