My husband got the fried chicken and gravy and the gravy was phenomenal! We also got a side of the bacon pancakes and they were fluffy, but had the crispy bacon inside! It was great! Coffee was good. The decor is very quaint, with multiple paintings that were a series of "paint by numbers" paintings. And I absolutely LOVED it! It felt like I was in my grandma's house and I loved it! This time I was accompanied by three friends and we all had pancakes. They were dense, flavorful and quite large. Three ordered blueberry cakes and discovered a generous amount of blueberry filling. I was somewhat iconoclastic ordering regular pancakes with lingonberry butter and a side of bacon. All selected short stacks but the consensus was that for us a single would likely suffice. As it happened I ended up taking about half of my order home in a leftovers box. The pancakes arrived hot and soaked up the syrup requiring several applications. I thought that the bacon was crisp and tasty but a bit scant. When we got to Hot Plate at roughly 9:45am on a Saturday morning there were few available seats up front so we ended up in a back room. Being next to a window made it feel spacious and of course the same food is served. Coffee tasted somewhat burnt but free refills are available so all in all it was a deal to us. I thought that the wait staff were cordial and accommodating but on the languid side. Probably not the first choice for breakfast if on a deadline. Noise level made conversation challenging. Street parking plentiful. This remains a solid option in my book. read more

Hot Plate is a little gem in the Nokomis area. I already knew I was going to like it when I was greeted with a big bowl of candy. I will assume this place is only open for breakfast or at least I have only had breakfast here. On the first visit, I went with a group so I was able to try to blueberry pancakes and chicken fried steak. No, I did not eat all of this, we were sharing. :) Everything was seasoned well and really good. The second visit was just as satisfying when I ordered the breakfast burrito. Very filling and it was one of the largest I ever had. On both occasions, I walked away with a doggy bag and had no problem reheating the food to relive the initial experience. While this would be a great place for brunch, I would not recommend it for a crowd larger than 4. Service was good. Parking is along the street as Hot Plate is located in a residential neighborhood. Hubby wanted to go here for Father's Day, but of course it was jam- packed, so we waited a week to check this place out. Elena was our server and she was so attentive and friendly! She worked hard to make sure that we had a great experience, topping off my coffee, bringing extra cream, even offering to take a picture of us ! The vibe is playful and fun, with different light fixtures for every booth, paint- by- numbers pictures on the wall, and vintage chotskies scattered throughout, making it fun and funky. The food was amazing. Partner ordered the hash, with hollandaise sauce, scrambled eggs, potatoes, and lots of chunks of peppers and onions, making for a hearty meal. I ordered the chalkboard scramble, with tomatoes, ham, mushrooms, and onions. SO yummy The seasoning was perfect- salted and seasoned perfectly- I didn't need to reach for any condiments with this meal! Elena let me substitute a blueberry pancake for my toast, and I'm so glad I did! It was fluffy and had oodles of berries, and was big - not quite dinner plate size, but it took up most of that plate! The country potatoes were delicious, seasoned with more than just table salt and pepper. It tasted as if it had all seasoning added to them. They were crispy on the outside but light and fluffy on the inside. The eggs were fresh and cooked just right with the egg scramble plate they serve. They pecan cinnamon roll is more than just your average serving, it's enough to be shared with two people. It's loaded with pecan and drenched in caramel sauce. Stumbled upon this little spot while taking a little drive to find a new breakfast place. Kitschy little neighborhood spot near Lake Nokomis. Ok, on to the food. It wasn't bad, but wasn't special in any way to me. I had the veggie breakfast burrito. It was big, but not overwhelimingly large. The biggest disappointment was I didn't know it was going to be smothered in enchilada sauce and holy moly the amount of beans was insane. After scraping off some of both, it was much better. This is one of my fav place to get breakfast. Family owned, quaint little place with decors all over. They do not take reservations. I find that you don't have to wait if you go around 11:30am or after the breakfast rush. We got the biscuits and gravy, chicken fried steak and shared a caramel pecan roll. Whatever you order, make sure to get the caramel pecan roll. It was the best thing on the menu. I don't know why it wasn't on the StarTribune's list for best cinnamon and caramel rolls in the Twin Cities. Trust me, I tried half of the list and nothing come close to this here. We sought out Hot Plate after we got a tip from the parking valet at our hotel. On Labor Day 2021 we must have lucked out, no wait for us. Not the same story for those who came later. The line inside and out was long. This eclectic little neighborhood diner was a GREAT choice. We shared a Caramelized Pecan Roll followed by the Mexican Omelette and the The Bloomington, a fancy breakfast sandwich. Both were very good. The omelette was loaded with chorizo, cheese and onion. The breakfast sandwich was stacked with bacon and eggs. I'm not usually a fan of breakfast potatoes but the were perfect. From the decor, the atmosphere and the food, Hot Plate is definitely FIVE stars. read more

Was on a weekend trip with my boyfriend and it was between this and another breakfast place. Went to the other option first, and was not a fan of the ordering and ambience so we decided to leave and come here. The vibe was so fun and art work was cool, and we got seated in about 10 minutes (and they were pretty busy). The table we sat at was extremely wobbly so every time one of us moved even the slightest bit the table would move and shake. Also, I am very much a girly who appreciates lots of space, especially when theres condiments and stuff at the table, so being at a small table was not my fave, but I digress. We waited about 5 minutes for our drink orders to be taken. At first it was going okay, but we saw our server when we got our drinks, and then at the end. We could see she was constantly on her phone. And listen, I understand you have multiple tables and are busy, but I think just a checking up on us would've been great. We ordered our food and someone from the kitchen (I think) brought it out. My order was wrong so I sent it back and it was quickly fixed. I ordered some basic over easy eggs with bacon and a pancake. Boyfriend ordered some sort of burrito (sorry can't remember!!) which he wasn't a fan of because there were beans, but also if he actually read the menu he would've seen that, so user error LOL. Hot Plate has become a definite go to for brunch. This little niche diner has a unique style, amazing servers and unique twists on some of your standard breakfast foods. My first trip here I tried their breakfast burrito. It was amazing and full of flavor. It was also incredibly filling. The next trip I tried the caramel apple French toast, again, I was filled up and very happy with the taste of the food. The most recent trip I tried out their biscuits and gravy. The flavor was great and the breakfast potatoes were perfectly crisp. My boyfriend almost always gets the pancakes with the lingonberry butter. It all melts in your mouth. It's fun to look around and see all of the little knickknacks that are used as decorations. You almost feel like you've walked into your grandma's kitchen. So far every time I've been in, we've seen the same wait staff. And for how busy it gets, they are always incredibly friendly and quick to serve. With how small the space is you may have to wait, but I promise it's worth it. I'm sad I don't have pictures of all the visits and foods. read more

Upon entering hot plate you feel as if you have entered the house of both your grandma and weird cousin with the eclectic decor. Everything from figurines to Asian art to space themed decor lines the restaurant in a quaint 1940s-50s neighborhood. The server explained they had experimented for years and finally landed on the reality they were great at breakfast. We went at peak brunching hours on a Saturday and waited about 30 minutes, but it was well worth the wait (will def call ahead next time, or come earlier/later). The decor in this place is everything. Kitschy 70s decor with paint by numbers and other paintings covering nearly every inch of every wall, clay statues your grandma used to collect, and funky light fixtures keep you entertained and nostalgic for the past. Atmosphere is comfortable and low-key, with comfy diner booth seating. Our waiter was spectacular--fun, quirky, and helpful with the suggestions. Food was just as good as it sounded: Carnitas scramble had great flavor--pork cooked perfectly, and with fried potatoes on the side that were delish. Covered in hot sauce it was the perfect bfast. Mom got the Grant Marais-- scramble with cream cheese, smoked lake trout and asparagus. Sounds funky but it was fab--the trout had amazing flavor and the cream cheese was perfect with it! She really wanted the corned beef hash, but that's only on weekdays. Huge bummer. She upgraded to a side of pancakes instead of toast for a buck or so more, and it was massive. The size of a plate and you can get any topping: blueberries, lingonberry butter, peanut butter, nutella, bacon, or carmelized pecans--my mom's choice. She was obsessed! It tasted like candy deliciousness. She ended up eating that instead (one was enough to fill her completely), and I benefitted from her trout scramble leftovers. So beware--the pancakes are delish but also massive! Dad got the philly omelet and liked it so much he wouldn't share. Rude. Brother got the mexican omelet and usually I don't pick omelets, but I was SO jealous. The chipotle sauce and sour cream on top were TO DIE FOR. So delish with the chorizo and potatoes! Hot Plate was def a hit for my girlfriends and I this past weekend. We wanted to find something trendy, fun, and most importantly (at least for me) local to grab some eats. Hot Plate def met our requirements! THE SPACE/LOCATION: Hot Plate is tucked into the super cute Nokomis residential area with a few businesses near it. They have free street parking and plenty of it! It has such a fun kitschy vibe. Each table has a different type of chandelier above it, the walls are covered with paint by number type paintings/prints, and there's little knick knacks EVERYWHERE. Plus there's a cute waiting area for those busy days when you have to wait for your table. There's even an assortment of games, including Rock 'em Sock 'em Robots! Yaaass!! THE STAFF: Awesome! Our server gave us plenty of time to browse the menu and was super helpful in reviewing the hot items. One of my fellow brunch goers was having a hard time deciding and she left her meal choice in his hands! He had a great attitude and made our experience that much better. THE EATS: Sooo good! Upon browsing the menu we were all torn between a few different items. I was highly considering the breakfast tacos, but chose to nosh on the Carnitas Scramble instead. Scrambled eggs, cheddar cheese, black beans, green peppers, onions, tomatoes with chipotle sauce, sour cream and a side of fried potatoes. It was so tasty! Def couldn't go wrong. My fellow brunch goers had the Huevos Divorciados and the Scramble Wrap without the tortilla. The Huevos Divorciados looked fantastic! Will be keeping that in mind for my next visit. Stopped in to have breakfast on the way to the airport. It's Monday and the hostess/cashier already appears overwhelmed.. My husband and I sat at the counter to save time because we're headed to the airport. I asked the hostess if we could sit at the counter she said sure, slid me two menus across the counter (eyebrows raised) I gave one to hubby. She then sat 4 (two groups of two) to their tables, cashed someone out, went to clean off another table. We're creatures of habit so we knew what we were ordering. Two ladies came in and said their sensor wasn't working and they had been waiting longer than others that came after them. She was correct, because she complimented my pants as I walked up, and two ladies came after her. The cashier/hostess apologized and sat them right away. My Husband and I still at the counter waiting, menus to the side to indicate we're ready to order. Two more ladies come in, asked about the wait time, cashier/hostess seat them right away, still not acknowledging us at the counter. We then get up and as we're walking out two ladies complimented my glasses and asked if everything was ok (they notice we didn't eat) we told them yes we have a flight to catch, the hostess/cashier gave us the "oh well" look. So my rating isn't based on the food nor is a reflections of the customers but a hostess/cashier who is the first contact with a business that made us feel like she didn't want to help us nor did she want our business. We loved ambiance, the decor, the customers were super friendly, the food looked good across the room but the initial contact gets a thumbs down. I hope she wasn't the owner!!! read more

It would be better if the place focused on cleanliness instead of throwing as many kitschy, dust-covered antiques around the dining area as possible. We had to ask for forks, as there were only spoons and knives tossed in the sticky little silverware bucket on the table. The food was fine--just what I expected out of a diner. Only complaint is that the kitchen just tossed my toast on top of the sauce on my omelet, meaning I couldn't put jam on it. The music was entirely too loud, it was hard to carry on a conversation and it was overstimulating. Waitstaff seemed more interested in singing along than tending to their tables, which were all full since it was a high volume time. Seating didn't take long, though, but we were waiting for a while with the menus. Two stars subtracted for the dirtiness--I finished my milk and discovered a crusty bit of detritus stuck in the bottom of the cup. That was a nasty surprise to the end of the meal. One star subtracted for the hilariously tiny napkins--they were maybe the size of two dollar bills stapled together when you completely unfolded them. I'm a creature of habit at certain restaurants and at Hot Plate, I rarely if ever order anything except the Carnitas Scramble. I love everything about this dish, aside from the jalapeños...I may ask for them to leave those off. I brought some out of town friends here and they absolutely loved the wild rice gravy. Lots of great local foods to try here. The decor is a fantastic paint by number kitschy feel. There is plenty to look at while you wait. And if you don't get here early enough or late enough in the day, you will be waiting. There's coffee there to serve yourself so that helps. The server was good at checking in with us, but wasn't the best about keeping my water glass filled - the water also didn't have ice in and was room temperature, which I thought was a little weird. The food came out in a timely fashion and, wow, it was great! My pumpkin buckwheat waffle was delicious! Probably one of the best waffles I've had in awhile! Absolutely recommend! The American potatoes were also really yummy! I'm not sure how they were seasoned, but it was perfection! Yum Yum Yum! Such a fantastic breakfast spot, how have I not known about this before! The space is very tacky retro meets vintage....so old school but good!! I loved it! The food was above average and came out piping hot and delicious. The biscuits and gravy was awesome, with homemade sausage gravy and biscuits. My friends got pancakes, which were a bit smaller than expected but was made up for by taste. I don't think I'd get a latte, it was wayyy too hot and stated like slightly flavored water.
