Cute boutique hotel in downtown Long Beach. You can easily catch the train from the transit center close to LAX. Very walkable neighborhood with lots of bars and restaurants to explore. Not far from the convention center, the port, and beaches. This hotel does not have an elevator and stairs may be a challenge for some. Each room is different. The coffee offered in the lobby was super strong! But they did have various creamers, sweeteners, and syrups available. Free waters as well. Bikes for use with deposit. The sofa bed in our room definitely needs to be replaced, was not sleep able. The night desk person was not as good as the day time person. I would try this place again if in town.

Huge room with kitchen, living room, and dining room!

This is a very odd hotel, our room was like a whole apartment. There was a big staircase to climb to access the room, so if you have mobility issues check if your room had stairs or not. It was a fun place to stay, and the beds were comfortable. I enjoyed the large bathtub it was a nice surprise. The negatives was the a/c vent dripping condensation on he bed, and the door wasn't very secure because the chain could come out either side of the slider. This hotel wasn't in a very good part of town it seemed, so feeling more secure would have been nice, because the door to our room was right off the street.

    Community Kitchen

Overall, we enjoyed our stay at Hotel Royal for the most part. We decided to giet it a try because we do like boutique hotels and their individual personalities. Pros: We loved the community kitchen; great place to relax, enjoy our morning coffee and say hi to other guests Thumbs up to the complimentary bottled water and use of technology. Staff was friendly and helpful. Room was sparse but clean. Price was affordable, especially for Long Beach in April. And location is close to restaurants and attractions. Cons: Room was sparse, with only three hangers and no closet. Shower took about five minutes for hot water to arrive, and the pressure was abysmal. Hallway stairs needed a good deep cleaning. Noise at night after the bars closed was incredibly loud, although I can't knock the hotel for that. Would we stay there again on our next visit to LB? Good question. Probably if we were in the main building the next time.

Quirky boutique hotel close to the downtown area of Long Beach. Everything is walkable here. There is also a small convenience store right on the corner. There are no elevators so if you aren't a light packer then be prepared to hoof it. We had many pieces of luggage and while the kind receptionist offered to upgrade us for $30 for a room one floor down I decided to stick with Plan A. I did like the original brick wall in the bedroom. There is a communal kitchen space and the small room had a fridge and microwave. I didn't care for the bathroom situation. Especially if there is more than one person. No fan or window in the bathroom and there is an actual opening that goes to the room (!!!). What's up with that??? The bathroom wasn't cleaned to my standards so I did mention this to the front desk person, I forgot her name but she was very helpful. She then switched me to another room that was like an apartment - very spacious and quiet. It had a living room and kitchen as well. Love the way that the place was decorated, complete with midcentury furniture and decor. Would stay in this room again!

Wow! Just wow! This place is amazing. We got a loft with the front door entrance directly from the street. It is huge! With 2 beds. Full living, dining room and kitchen. Can fit multiple people. It was clean with a nice modern/industrial feel. We had stayed at the Hotel Royal because we were taking a cruise out of Long Beach port. The location of the hotel is convenient and close to the port. Just a 10 minute drive into the ports parking garage. There are food options all within walking distance. We opted to eat at the Thai District directly across the street (which is delicious btw). Anyway, the hotel staff is so welcoming and nice and always available if you have any questions. They even have riding bikes you can rent located in the lobby. This place was recommended to us by a friend and we're so glad for it. This is now our GO-TO place to stay when in the Long Beach area. This is a definite gem! And the price is more than reasonable for its location.

NOTHING ROYAL (3.5 stars) - STAY: great except for the bed and weak toilet - SERVICE: amazing customer service - PRICE: decent - AMBIANCE: boutique hotel Needed a quick place to stay for an overnight. Thought about the usual normal big hotels I stay in but there is a strike and I'm not on vacation - needed something more simple. Quick head down and leave first thing in the early AM. Airbnb didn't have anything I was looking for close to the area. Decided to check out this boutique hotel. Nothing Royal but cute. Suites to choose from: Cozy Full Deluxe Full Studio Queen - the one I chose Deluxe Queen Deluxe King Apartment Queen Royal King Premium Royal Loft :: CHECK-IN :: Starts at 3p. Front desk is available only until 10pm (no employee on-site overnight). Front desk guy was awesome, friendly, and honest with me when I had questions about the area. Get your key, get your parking tag (if you paid for it), get the code to the door (for when you come and go at hour own leisure). :: PARKING :: Uhm. Sketchy. Hotel is right on Broadway in downtown. Their parking is a back parking surrounded by other buildings/apartments. It's dark, it looks sketchy, and to get there you have to go thru the alley which is super sketchy especially at night. Yes there is a camera but what's the point if nobody around to help you. I drive a sports car and decided NOT to park back there for my own safety. However after 6p there is free street parking until 6a. Way safer! I secured a spot right infront on the main street Broadway. I felt very safe at night stepping outside and my car felt very safe. :: STAY :: First impression, charming. Basically an old apartment building turned into a nice boutique hotel. Suites are cute and clean, and perfect for something simple. Reality, the bed was the worst. It was on the top (3rd floor). FYI, no elevators and all stairs. The stairs are creaky and felt bad for visitors near the stairway. My hotel suite had: queen size bed, tv, small 2 person dining table, small fridge, microwave, full bath with bathtub, and ac. It was quiet and I didn't hear much of the outside noise. Occasionally through the night sirens but it gets drowned out if you have ac running. And it was very clean. HOWEVER, the toilet was near broken - the flush was weak and toilet water was low. The toilet was going to give out any second. And that bed was so uncomfortable. I tossed and turned all night sleeping very uncomfortable. It's SO firm, I felt like I was sleeping on cement. That did it for me and probs not stay here again. :: CHECKOUT :: I had to be somewhere early AM. Front desk doesn't come until 07:00a. If you leave before then which I did, there is a drop box at the front near the door used with the code. The Front desk and lounge are closed and the doors to that area are closed and locked all might until a staff opens up. It has its charm and great staff but that bed and restless sleep didn't do it for me and left me tainted. Until the next review...

The breakfast buffet also has a good selection including made to order omelettes. * CONS: Overnight parking can be expensive especially if you are valeting your vehicle. It didn't feel safe parking off site for self parking. The elevators are slow. The hotel is starting to show some wear and staff is struggling to keep common areas clean and tidy. Our room's toilet was having issues flushing and staff refused to let us change rooms even though we just checked in room 5 mins ago. We had to vacate room and use public bathrooms downstairs for over an hour while maintenance fixed the issue. It would have been less intrusive and inconvenient if they just given us another room. I called to request a new one and ended up waiting 21 minutes before calling back for the status on it. I was then told that they would follow up on it and I'd receive an update on the status. 7 more minutes go by - no cup, NO UPDATE. I called back one final time, to which the man on the phone said, yes he put in a rush order and the man who's delivering it is elderly and it might take him just a few minutes longer. I said no problem but just so you know, my cup was taken earlier in the day and not replaced. The man then said he can definitely let housekeeping know for next time. I proceeded to respond and intended to say okay great but before I could even get to the great, he STRAIGHT UP HUNG UP ON ME. Also the person who delivered the cup was a younger boy so idk if the elderly man reasoning was just an excuse for the moment. I went down to the lobby immediately to speak to the manger in person and let her know how insanely unprofessional, unpleasant, and UNCOOL this was. They made an error and I got attitude back for it?! AT A FIVE STAR HOTEL. To their credit, she did apologize and sent up dessert, but by that point the issue wasn't about the teacup or a free comped anything. It was about the breakdown in communication, lack of respect, and service quality. Overall, not the level of service I anticipated for the price, which is disappointing. I will not be staying here again and don't recommend it for anyone else looking for a true five star experience.

The I came across the Varden. Definitely a boutique hotel, but definitely worth checking out. The rooms are typically small with barely room for a bed, a partial desk and a small bathroom area. But the room was extremely clean, the fixtures and bed were new and cool and for one person, really perfect. Particularly since other than sleeping and checking emails, what else do you really need? Well, for starters you need to feel safe. And this place does a great job of securing the facility at night, but you don't feel you're in a bad neighborhood anyway. You also might like to enjoy a welcoming attitude, and the staff and place has plenty of that. The young staff were extremely friendly and accommodating. Being forewarned that the property has 3 levels and no elevator is important, but honestly, it's not a tough climb to floor 3. And as a testament at how great the staff are, they wouldn't take no, and they carried my bags to my 3rd floor room. Since I was there for meetings, I needed to press my clothes, so a call to the front desk resulted in a brand new Iron and Board appearing at my room within minutes. And being welcomed by a reception with snacks, wine and drinks between 5:00 - 7:00 everyday, is just super nice. They also do a continental breakfast from 6:00-9:00 daily. They have a hip space right behind the registration area for these treats so it's easy to walk through on your way in/out of the property. And best of all the price per night was less than 1/2 of what those big chain hotels were charging. And I was less than 4 blocks (and a very nice walk past lots of local stores/restaurants to give me a feel for the area) from the Convention Center. For all these reasons, if you're in Long Beach solo, I would highly recommend you check out the Varden.
