For my family most hotels are a place to sleep and that's about it. Our event is on the beach right in front of the hotel so it wins on location by default. First impressions matter most. Checking in was pleasant. We notified the front desk person we had a service dog and no issues there. An improvement from the last time we stayed when they asked for his "papers" which is illegal by the way. Neither her nor there...those were different owners. It used to be Ocean Plaza and its now Hotel Tybee. The new owners improved the hallways, put white linens on the beds and installed flat screens. Not a huge improvement but it's a start. When we got in the room it was frigid and wet. The thermostat was set at 60 and everything was damp with humidity. I adjusted the thermostat and got the family into bed. Shortly after it started to get uncomfortably warm and humid. The air had not come back on and the thermostat was not working anymore. I called down to the front desk from my cell phone because the phone jack is ripped out of the wall in our room so the phone doesn't work. There was no answer so I walked to the reception desk in the adjacent building. I was told that there is a switch on the balcony door that shuts off the a/c if its open. I told her that the child lock will not work if the door is completely seated so it must not be contacting the switch. She told me to leave the child lock unlocked. I can not because my daughter has autism. Low functioning autism and a third story balcony could lead to tragedy. "We can send maintenance first thing in the morning." She says. So I took the post card from the bathroom that talks about saving the turtles, folded it up, and wedged it in the door so the switch and the child locks will still work. The humidity is still there but at least its cool. read more

We reserved a room here a week ago, driving all the way from Texas we checked in yesterday, the receptionist can't even smile, we were given a room and when we opened the room it looked like someone just got off the bed it was a mess. I called the front desk and told them that the room was not even ready the lady told us that she was sending someone to "ASSIST" us, this guy came up and the first sarcastic question he asked was "Is it that hard to find your room number?" What really bugged me was when he blamed the situation on the morning crew how they didn't cleaned the room, I hate excuses, fix the problem for your guest and whatever issues in regards to the hotel staff should be dealt with internally. They gave us the room next door, the bathroom sink still have traces of shaving cream and hair, water pressure is low, overall go somewhere else... read more

The cost was descent and being so close to the beach was great. You could hear everything going on in your neighbors room which became uncomfortable at times. Staff was nice. Room could be updated. Also, when people vacated their rooms their hotel door was just left open for an entire day/night. You could see all the mess people left because they didn't clean the rooms right away. It made me feel a little unsafe. read more

My family stayed at Hotel Tybee for three nights. Upon arrival, there were no towels in our room. We realized this the morning after check in when we showered. We did not have a phone in our room to call the desk to receive towels. Due to "COVID policies", the hotel said they were not doing cleaning during stays, so to get more towels, you have to contact the front desk. As there was no phone in our room, we had to walk up to the front desk in our pajamas to get towels. They said they would send towels. (We should've listened to the lady checking out when she said to ask for extras because she had the worst time getting towels in her room dirinf her stay... and also handed the lady at the front desk a door handle that was off a door in her room from the beginning of their stay) We went ahead and showered and just used the two beach towels in the room to dry off. Three sets of towels did not arrive until after our entire family of 5 showered and got ready. We found a door tag to request needed items, so put a request for additional towels. (The tag was still hanging on our door when we checked out two days later.) In the meantime, we called the front desk from our phone AND went up to the front desk to request towels. Never received them. So, our family of 5 only received THREE towels for our entire 3 night, 4 day stay. The hotel also boasted about how they have been renovating. Our room was not renovated at all. In fact, the sink faucet handle was just sitting on top of the sink. Additionally, the bedding was dirty and the hallways/main areas did not seem to be any cleaner. We travel quite a bit, and this was honestly one of the worst travel experiences we have had. Especially paying over $300 a night! The beach chairs included in the room and recommendations on restaurants were the nicest part of the entire stay. read more

Wanting a beachfront room for a girls weekend, we decided to try this hotel. This mid-January trip was very off-season so the entire town was almost deserted. The Hotel had few rentals and the beach was not crowded. The reception staff was professional and very helpful. We enjoyed using our tiki-tokens for free drinks and appreciated the information about sights and restaurants in the area. It's not fancy but the room was clean and the beds were great. I'd go back there for sure. I highly recommend it. read more

Without a doubt, the highlight of staying here was the access and, partially, the beach view. On 2nd floor, we could still see the ocean beyond the dune and the public parking and public portable restroom. The hotel itself made a stab at renovation recently: keycard scanner locks, new paint and carpet (particularly in the halls). The rooms, however, were budget. Beds (sinking), sheets (too thin), coffee maker and coffee (below Dollar General). A/C couldn't keep pace with the environment: nothing completely dried out ... Not the carpet, beach towels, swimsuit, yesterday's shirt, etc. Everything was damp. On the positive, mini fridge and microwave worked. read more

Pictures on line are a bit deceiving. There's a parking lot between the hotel and the beach, and there's not a back door to access the beach. You have to leave & enter through the front of the hotel. Pictures on line make the rooms look super updated, unfortunately ours is not. You can tell they've done some updates here & there. As far as cleanliness, not the best I've seen but definitely not the worst. We will probably stay elsewhere if we do return. read more

I think it becomes very obvious you are paying for the proximity of the beach. There is a public parking lot between the hotel and the beach which is annoying because folks can be loud and stare at you on your balcony. There was no late checkout, but we were allowed to stay parked there through the day. It's very close to everything but the rooms are meh. The bed is springy, there was mold in the shower, our balcony door didn't lock, and there was a hole in the blackout curtain. The pool plays obnoxious loud music and everyone there was smoking-even staff. I wouldn't stay here again. I gave it 3 because although dated, it was clean and so close to everything. read more

Pros: Close to the beach, walking distance to the pier. Large TV in room. Balcony. Cons: The rooms, while recently updated with more modern furniture and a big screen TV, feel grimy and dirty. We could see grease marks all over the headboard from all the previous guests. There was a nice biofilm coating the air conditioning unit. There was still hair on the bathroom floor and bathtub - blech. We originally booked a 3 night stay but cancelled the remaining 2 nights shortly after we got in the room (I will say they were very accommodating in cancelling last minute!). A week later, when I tried to address a billing issue, the woman at the front desk told me "I don't have time to explain this to you anymore." When we come back we will stay elsewhere! read more

We stayed at hotel Tybee several times over the few years with no problems. Last night, however, our air unit was out of order as soon as we arrived. Someone came to repair it while we were out to dinner, but was out again within 10 minutes of being back in the room. We ended up having to keep the balcony door open due to the room being miserably muggy as it happened to be an unusually warm weekend. When telling the front desk at checkout we were told sorry and rushed out the door. Very disappointed to say the least. read more

Stayed there Feb 21st. We knew it would be pricey because it was right on the beach. We were quoted $134 for a parking lot view, not even a beach view. Total came to $179 - somehow! Place was very quiet - maybe if they charged less during the off season, they would get more people. So no noise complaints due lack of customers. Just steps to the beach, which was very nice. But that is were the praises stop. The room was really dusty. I wrote that in the dust on the t.v. I had to wipe off the cheap balcony chairs myself with a wet towel. They had obviously not been checked/cleaned in weeks. Spilled paint on the bathroom floor from when they painted the sink. And what is it with 'nicer' hotels that they can't even offer you a fresh cup of coffee (not the cheap in room coffee) let alone a little breakfast? Are they too fancy for that perk?! We rarely treat ourselves to nicer hotels, but I would take a Choice Hotel over this any day. read more

Newly remodeled place. I've been here about 10 times and this was the best I've seen it look. The hotel staff also upgraded me for free to 2 queen beds when I reserved a king but my daughter came unexpectedly. I think it sucks that the restaurant closed. They need to get the right staff in there instead of closing it. read more

Mediocre at best. It's been "renovated" but you can still see the rust on the door frames through the paint. Our A/C couldn't keep up with the humidity of August in GA, so the room was around 80+ degrees and everything was soaked when we woke up. Two stars were given only because the room was large enough for our family of four and functional- nothing fancy but we just needed a place to sleep at night. Room prices are insane for the lack of amenities! Long waits at check in, no breakfast... very "meh." read more

This was a horrible hotel experience! There were bugs everywhere , and even with AC on it was SO hot! It was like a horror movie, imagine a horror movie hotel, that's what it was. It looked like a place you'd get MURDERED. Outside I'm pretty sure there were crack heads outside.The people were very shady, one man even tried to get into my room. The rooms are terrible! They look and feel like they are from the 1960's. The newest thing in the room is the coffee maker and tv, and they still look like they are from the early 2000's. Bugs were falling from the ceiling and crawling out the corners of the room. The bedsheets and bedspread felt.... well, they felt like they were never washed and felt wax-y. The doors didn't even touch the floor, taking away your privacy. Under the sink in the bathroom was very moldy.If I could, I'd rate this a ZERO. This is the type of place people only go to for a hook up. I was surprised that the mirrors didn't have cameras. This place was by far THE WORST hotel I have ever been to. To say I was disappointed by the treatment and service I received from this hotel would be an understatement. I have worked in the service industry for over 5 years and this by far the worst place I have visited, I highly discourage anyone from visiting this hotel. Check in was 4pm, I arrived at 6:15 and my room was not ready until 8pm. We came here for an event and rented out their bar, they had 3 bartenders to cater to over 200 people. I waited 30 minutes to get a drink and was not served. My girl friend and I went to get our own bottle of wine (we were okay with having to pay a corking fee) when we returned and asked for a wine glass we were told "glasses weren't available for events" and "if we did not remove our unopened bottle it would be confiscated and we would be kicked out because it was 'against the law'" which we then researched and showed the bartender that it would be legal to take our bottle. The following day I asked for my room to be serviced and it was not, I called the front desk when I returned and was told "house keeping was no longer there and our room couldn't be cleaned". I went to get extra towels and sheets and had to clean my room myself. On top of that there was only one roll of toilet paper and when we asked for more we were told they were "out." I tried to be reasonable and understanding because I work in the industry and understand the challenges but the service I got was absolutely unacceptable. I normally try to give places the benefit of the doubt and I hate to pat negative reviews but after their experience I felt it was necessary. read more

Imagine checking into your hotel room to find bloody, rusted safety pins in the toilet and when you call the front desk to have them come up and remove, or switch rooms they decline and say "you should just flush it so you don't have to look at it all night." Then when you call the hotel and speak with the manager to get a refund or some money back, she says there aren't grounds to refund because they could have helped. We called to have it rectified and they didn't do anything. If yelp would let me post photos and videos, you'd be disgusted. Wanted place in the beach with ocean view. This hotel was that. It is a great part of the beach, swings at the beach to set and enjoy the beach and watch the ships come and go. The rooms are very clean and have been updated, the bathrooms need updating just a little but they are clean and not bad at all. The air units........are totally awesome!! The room stayed nice and cool which made for great sleeping! There is security that walks the halls at night, That was great to see made me feel better. You must use your room key to get into the building of your room. Will be coming to stay here on my next visit would like to see a continental breakfast as there are not very many places to eat on the Island read more

I will try to be fair and name all the good things I saw despite how very disappointed I was. When we got to Registration, my husband checked us in and the other clerk kindly stood by the men's bathroom door so I could use it since women's was out of service. When we got in the car to park, my husband seemed upset. He told me that when he went to check in two employees were talking about their teeth and he had to wait for them to finish their conversation to be checked in. I always check the beds immediately for bed bugs! don't worry I don't think there was any. But to my dismay, the mattresses were slightly gross. There was black around the seams and some holes in the cloth. The bed was poorly made also. The nice part is the bed is comfy and the white comforter and pillows made me forget what the mattress looked like. There was black mildew/mold on the a/c. Something pink and slimy would show up on the bathroom door frame when we took showers. The lighting in our bathroom was my favorite though-ladies you will feel like a beauty queen in the lighting-no joke) The carpet was always wet. All the clothes I brought with me, ended up feeling wet. None of our clothes would dry, even the ones we hung in bathroom over the retractable clothes lines in shower. The hotel cleaning staff were exceptional in their friendly attitudes (I think that was the best part of the hotel). Every time we walked out of our hotel it always smelled like trash. It felt very dirty outside and the a/c units by the door were always leaking and looked half dead. Our refrigerator was not working and we had to call the front desk. I tried to cancel within the first hour of being there but it was non-refundable and they had no other rooms available. I gave up on trying to switch rooms because it most likely would have been the same issues. Even though there is an ocean view you have to walk through a grimy "pay for the day" parking lot to get onto the beach. It is not worth over $200 you have to pay to be considered on beach hotel. If I was able to have canceled, I would have rented a place off of Airbnb.com and rented a bike. read more

Nice size room. Comfortable bed. The small fridge and microwave was a bonus. The place was under construction so construction dust covered surfaces not generally dusted. We were out of the room all day to come back around 4:30 to find our room had not been cleaned yet. The place was basically deserted I'm guessing due to the cold weather. When the elevator on our side of the building went out they offered to change our room to beachside for an additional $50 per night. That should have been a room comp in our favor not theirs. Be prepared to pay for parking per night. I would think that was part of the room charge but it is a practice island wide. During my stay the General Manager was very rude to his employees. Also while I was staying there it was a lot of drama going on between the employees and the general manager. The general manager seemed as though he was taking his personal life and bringing it to work. read more

It's in a great location, the staff is very nice (Doug), but it's severely overpriced. The room is clean and equipped well with fridge, microwave, and comfortable bed. The hotel itself is showing it's age and it's not "oceanfront" per se. It has a public, city owned, parking lot between it and the beach. It's unfortunate that they're still "selling" rooms (there were only four cars in the parking lot the entire time we were there). Over $400 (with tax) for two weekday stays in off season is crazy. There are better values as I have looked a bit closer for my next visit to Tybee Island. read more

I stay at Hotel Tybee several times a year and have been for 10 years now. The management team that came in a year or so ago have done so many nice renovations and have made Hotel Tybee an even better place. I have stayed all across the island and I haven't been anywhere near as satisfied at other places as I am at Hotel Tybee. It has everything you need: Two pools, updated rooms, and in the heart of south beach within a short walk to the beach and all the shops, bars and restaurants. I highly recommend it! read more

NOT impressed at all. Ocean front is actually 4 lanes deep of public (undesirable ppl) parking, a line of trees and about a 10 foot long view of ocean. Poorly trained staff. Staff argueing over which elevator we could use. NO NUMBERS marked ANYWHERE around building to locate our room upon arrival. Check-in was very accommodating. We were able to check-in early, which was nice after an early morning flight into Atlanta and drive to Tybee island. Room was what I expected from hotel site. Not great, not bad. Average. Parking was convenient. Beach was close. read more

The room itself was worth the money we paid. However, the lack of communication between hotel staff and the apparent lack of work ethic on housekeeping's part is what gives this 3 stars. Had to call front desk twice to get a new coffee maker, the brew basket we had did NOT fit the coffee maker. Called the next day to tell front desk we needed more towels and a new trash bag. Told them our dirty towels and the full trash can would be by the door. Trying to make it easier for the housekeeper. Especially since I called AFTER the morning rounds. Got back after being gone for several hours to find new towels on the shelf by the door, not in the bathroom where they belong, no new trash bag for our trashcan, nor was our full trashcan even emptied. To top it off, ALL of the dirty towels that I placed by the door were still there. They did leave us a plastic bag, but it was the bag for the ice bucket, not the trashcan as we requested. Everything in the room was damp when we arrived. Probably because the lock on the patio door doesn't work so moisture gets into the room. Ac worked great though and the fridge kept stuff cold. read more

I saved and saved so that my daughter and I could have a magical spring break! Paying the entire $1114.72 at check-in there was no turning back. We paid for the Full Beach view which your can see after your view of the parking lot! This is not advertised in anyway. There is NO Beach front, full view. Next, the bathroom was so horrendous I didn't want to go in there much less allow my 4 year old daughter to bathe in there!! SEE PICS. There was mold and it is obvious no deep cleaning is ever done. The maid carts are complete with swiffers. There were bugs everywhere. We would lay in bed at night and watch them crawl across the ceiling. For those of us who are on a budget, this might as well have been a million dollars to me. That said, we came home a night early to feel clean. There were problems. Stayed for a week, and was probably my first mistake. During the week, the towels were the only thing that were replaced. Beds were never made even though I left a tip everyday. The water was installed backward, the hot was cold and the cold was hot. The hotel did have the musty smell of a room that was wet and had been closed up, not surprising that it is an old hotel. The parking lot that most everyone comments is a public parking lot, so there is a lot of traffic to the beach in front of your hotel. Don't park in the wrong place you will get a ticket (the parking between the hotel and beach is $20) No breakfast at the hotel, so be prepared. Only one of the elevators worked so there was a longer wait to go anywhere. There doesn't seem to be a great deal of security. Make sure if you need anything, such as gas or food, you get it before 10pm, everything closes. If your not expecting much, Tybee Island is the place to be. It takes a good 30 to 40 mins to get to Savannah. read more

This hotel is only getting 1 star because the maintenance man that had to come to the room at midnight to fix the door was so nice. The cleaning people were non existent and the desk staff both arriving and leaving were only interested in getting a paycheck and not being nice to guests. The linens had stains which looked like blood but maybe was coffee and it makes me feel better to think it was coffee. I understand that their redecorating budget for the bathrooms had to be used to repair the hurricane damage but that's no excuse to ignore washing the sheets. The cleaning service only came into the room and added more soap but didn't make the beds or bring fresh towels. So disappointing. read more

We thoroughly enjoyed Cabin by the Sea and are already planning to come back and stay. It by far exceeded our expectations!! Everything from staff, location, cleanliness, amenities and the layout was perfect! Loved that it had a screened in front porch and a fenced in back yard! Extremely close to the beach and two pools steps away. We could be out the door and on the beach in a little over a minute. A straight walk with no busy roads to cross. Loved the tiki bar it was a great place to hang out! Grill and picnic tables right outside the fence by the cabin. Comfortable furniture inside and out! Even provide bikes but everything was so close didn't need them but nice to have that option. Everything was close and within walking distance! Even though you are in the middle of all the action the cabin was very quite and private. Being able to park right in front of the cabin was very convenient. You can really tell Brett and the staff take pride in the cabin and the hotel. You can really tell the cabin had a lot of love put into making it perfect! We were so delighted to be the first guests to stay at this wonderful cabin. Thank you so much for being a wonderful host and for the wonderful staff!! Wish we could have stayed longer but definitely will next time! read more
