For me, this is NOT the spa of my dreams though I know others that love it. My little wimpy body can only take a bit of heat and they only have one water pool and it is too hot for me. And of course the steam and sauna are too hot too! Duh. They are supposed to be, of course. This place just doesn't offer me options that work for me. The ambiance is ok. Though one friend said, "It is kind of basementy." Which is true. Service has always been fine. I really dislike though that the toilet has a shower curtain as a door (which leads to the shower.) I was promised lumbering sauropods munching on fresh from cheap sushi (how would I know? THE OTHER REVIEWERS KNEW), or rampaging tattooed lesbians. Or a dank basement full of librarians just waiting to shush me. Or a scene out of Clockwork Orange with my eyeballs forced open as female nudity was flaunted in from of me. FORCED TO STRIP NAKED. However, I was disappointed. Where WAS ALL THIS?! What did I get? -reasonable price (15$) -quick checkin (even not crowded around 5pm on Saturday) -cozy, but not freakishly large like I was in some high school locker room where I was going to get murdered -hot tub (the young woman working there checked the pH regularly which I liked) -I talked too much (hadn't seen my girls in forever) so I got shushed, but people are there to relax, not there to listen to me yap -steam/sauna (I was surprised at how nice both were!) -my favorite was a converted chemical shower (scientists know what I'm talkin' about!) for the cold plunge -the showers were showers and the relax-max room was nice So, as a non-never nude who has been to same sex bath-houses (I loved onsen when I was living in Japan) I was pleased to find an American kinda sorta in the same theme (not the same, but this isn't Japan) You can bring your own towel too. While the location, price, and convenience of Hot House make it a total god-send (or should I say goddess-send?), the ambiance is a little lacking for me -- yes, it's a basement and it feels like it. Also difficult is the "whispering rule." I realize that for some the spa is a thoughtful, quiet place, but when I go to sit in a hot tub with my girls, I'd like to be able to talk without being constantly paranoid that someone's going to come shush me. Heard back about my friend's experience of being misgendered and they've informed me that the owners of Hothouse addressed the problem appropriately and that they feel confident recommending the business to others again, though they won't be able to return themselves due to the trauma they experienced. I just want to say YES YES YES! for the price this place is amazing. I booked the whole Spa for a birthday party. I had 10 ladies get together on a Saturday morning and for 2 hours we enjoyed the entire spa and the massage services. The location isn't too hard to find and there is a paid lot plus street parking right next to it. The service was amazing. They even let us play our own music. I finally got over my fear of semi-public nudity and visited the Hothouse today with a girlfriend of mine who has been a regular for several years. I loved the atmosphere--the intimacy of the space, the cleanliness, the scent of lavender and eucalyptus emanating from the shower and steamroom...I could gush. I soaked all afternoon with a scarf over my brightly dyed hair and received no dirty looks, no attitude--nothing but excellent care from both the Hothouse employee and the other women around me. I'm very glad I brought my own thick, fluffy towels (several) and my own water bottle, and the filtered water with lime wedges provided kept me from becoming dehydrated as I moved from the hot tub to the sauna/steamroom and back again. I probably drank more water today than I have in weeks! So good. I was pleased to see that I was surrounded by a plethora of body types and ages. There were thin women, curvy women, gals with tattoos and dreads and pierced nipples, women who came alone and women accompanied by friends. Everyone was respectful and friendly and kept quietly to themselves. Hothouse was a totally affordable, very pleasant and therapeutic experience and I will definitely be coming back. read more

I've been going to the hot house for years and am very thankful that there is such a place. This place is a secret to happiness and world peace. The best thing about this place is that it is for women only. There is no need for swimsuits, no obnoxious men trying to pick up chicks, and no hairy backs to look at. It is a completely safe environment. The price is also great. I have a punch card and it comes to $10 per visit which includes a clean towel and the use of a locker. They also supply soap and filtered water and slices of lime. It just doesn't get any better than this. I would highly recommend getting a message here. Since your body is already hot, you get more out of it. For those who like deep tissue and bigger hands, Kelly is a god-sent. She is the one I'm sticking with. If there is anything negative to say, it would be parking. It is on Capitol Hill so go figure. They have a clock on the steam room door so you can always check the time. Enjoy! read more

I went here for the first time over the weekend. It exceeded my expectations! It's small so I decided to go early to beat the crowd, which definitely worked in my favor. Everything about it was relaxing, peaceful and clean. One thing that turned me off was the fact 3 women were using the sauna without sitting on a towel. I know the front desk makes sure to inform people to use a towel, but I just wish this was a little more closely monitored, as that is the last thing you want to see in a shared sauna space! My bathtub is too short. I'm a women of a certain size so sitting in the tub means that the water never completely covers me quite as high as I'd like. At the hothouse I have the ability to immerse myself completely in the healing waters of warmth. The entry fee is $13 for all you can soak. Bring a towel or two, bring a bottle for water, and bring a book. Soak and relax in the tub. Dry off in the dry sauna, enjoy a soothing lavendar scented steam room, then cool off with the cold shower and do it all again. Drink your water to stay hydrated and when you need a break there is a little resting area with pillows. Take your time to meditate on the meaning of life before you return to the real world. Not enough relaxation for you? The have massage therapists Louise Amandes is my favorite and works on Friday nights. A massage with hot rocks cure all that ail me. Yes it's in a basement, but that means its dark and quiet all the time. The noise rule , well its been ages since anyone has hushed me , but in this envrionment I'm not looking to get rowdy either. I am thrilled to have found this place. Sweating is one of my loves in life and a necessity for me on an almost daily basis, and I had had a long weekend prior to my visit. I opted to skip exercising and hit up Hot House instead. $15 for as long as you want there! Cheap!! I was a little hesitant to get naked in front of the other ladies, but thankfully everyone else is naked and it is no biggie. I'd think unless you are there late at night you probably are not going to encounter any creepers. My only complaint is that I wish they had more chairs in the spa area. It'd be nice after the steam room with a followed cold plunge to just be able to sit in a chair. Also, I would have gotten a massage but they are cash and check only. I'll try and bring more cash or even a check next time (and there will be a next time soon!!). read more

I regret that it took me so long to visit Hothouse. I visited on a typical Seattle day - gray, raining, cold, and to me relatively miserable. After a few hours of baking in a warm, dry sauna with a book and a copy of the Stranger, I felt like a new woman. It's not the most luxurious spa/sauna in existence, but it is extremely affordable and convenient. People of average income deserve to be able to soak in a hot tub and lounge in the sauna too. It's also awesome that it's open until midnight. I can go home, eat dinner, get my reading material together, head out and relax for a few hours and slide into bed calm and refreshed. On the evening of my first visit, I showed up around 10pm. There were only a few women there so I had the sauna to myself. I'm not shy about nudity. However, if you are, showing up later at night might be a good way to get accustomed to it since I imagine that they're much busier earlier in the day. If you don't live in the neighborhood and are driving, that's probably also one of the easier times to find parking. $12. (another $1 for padlock rental if you want a locker, or you can bring your own lock.) Bring a towel. Water with lemons is provided. Most people enjoy showering afterward, so you might want to bring your soap/shampoo/etc. too. read more

I am enamored with HotHouse! This was my first visit, and I just might have to make it a weekly thing. The simplicity and chill atmosphere were perfect for a day out with my best friend. We got there around 1pm, and it was empty. The entry fee is $15 now, with locker deposits at $1. They offer towel rentals, $1 Loofahs, and a $5 take home bottle of their awesome Lavender soap at the front desk. They offer their 10 visit punch card at $125 now. Filtered water, with lime wedges are provided, as well as a little cabinet with Q-Tips and tampons in the bathroom. Constant showering is a house rule, but after spending a ton of time in the steam room or the sauna, it's a great refresher to keep up your stamina. The whole spa is tiny, but I think it's what makes this place so charming. The lighting is dim, and they'd been burning Nag Champa incense. By 2:30 or so, about six or seven other women had joined us. The clientele is very diverse, and most seemed to be comfortable with the semi-public nudity. There was little to no talking once every one else came in, and it didn't even need to be enforced :) We both loved the cold plunge, and were a little addicted after our first try. We loved it so much, that we were counting the number of girls we'd be able to get to go in on a private party. They're offered at $150 for 2 hours, and $250 for 4 hours, but the days and times are restricted. We'll definitely be back again in the next couple of weeks! read more

I love the quiet, relaxing vibe here. It's not a traditional bathhouse, where one would meet with their friends to talk and kick back after a long day but promotes a more thoughtful vibe away from the hustle and bustle of the outside world. So yes, if you just *have* to gab with your friends - don't come here to do so. Respect the space and chatter away beforehand or afterwards over drinks. The punchcard is definitely the best deal, and I have yet to try the massages available, but I can't wait to spend more time here. Friends, I really, really love women-only spaces. There is something so wonderful about being in a place that is only ever women all the time no matter what forever. I have nothing against dudes (OK, I have a laundry list, but some of the best people I know are men), but there is nothing like walking around in totally relaxed nudity, drinking lime water and getting warm while other women quietly do the same all around you. It's so great. This is a cool, no-frills spa in the basement under the Wild Rose. There's a small entry through which you're buzzed into the check-in area. You put your shoes under the bench, pay $15 (plus $1 for a towel rental and $1 deposit for a lock - you can also just give them your ID for the lock, which you'll get back when you're done) via cash or check only, and then head into the locker room to take it off and hose it down. You put your stuff in a locker, hop in the shared hot shower (soap provided), then head off to one of a few places - I like to start in the hot tub, then move on to the dry sauna and then shower before repeating a few times. There's also a wet sauna, a cold shower, and a small area next to the locker room with mats on the floor where you can lay if it's too hot or too intense or you're just lulled into Napsville by all that relaxation. I once had a massage here and it was just OK. The therapist was nice but talked a lot and kept using a ton of pressure, even after numerous check-ins; I finally gave up. There are at least four other therapists, though, so I'm sure there's someone for everyone there. The prices are reasonable and they can see you super early or super late, which means they typically have appointments available. Minus one star for the single bathroom with no lock on the door (I don't mind being naked with strangers but this goes a little too far - the bathroom has one swinging door attached to the locker room and one vinyl curtain separating it from the showers. I always try to go to the bathroom before I'm there or after I leave! There are sometimes talkers and it's awkward to shush. Your towel will get accidentally stolen several times, so keep your locker key on your water bottle! This is a great, cool place. As other reviews have said, it's no Olympus, but not having to deal with freeway traffic and getting to read in a super comfortable hot tub with jets for $15 is more than fair for me. read more

This is a great little hideaway. Sometimes you can get this place to yourself if you go at the right time. The place is cozy. They take card now and not just cash. They have a hot tub, steam room, sauna, cold shower, normal showers, locker room, resting area, water with limes and lemons, and an open bathroom. The place is very intimate and there are signs that tell everyone to whisper. It is also very dim and relaxing, unlike banya 5 which is very bright. They do have services for massage and things that require reservation. No sandals. Bring your own towel if you don't want to rent. Also, lotion, shampoo, and conditioner. This is a special little place that has given me much joy. It's a precious little woman's spa on Capitol Hill, just the perfect several-hour getaway without getting out of the city. It's tiny. One hot tub that holds perhaps 6 or 7. One small dry sauna. One small steam bath. One cold-plunge shower. One restroom. One little resting/reading/napping room for two. Two hot showers. That's it. The ambiance is restful and tasteful. I like the subtile lighting, color schemes, and overall aesthetic. It feels meditative. And for the perfect treat, nothing beats a good long soak and sauna right before a good long massage...aaahhhh... I'd recommend visiting the Hot House alone when you want to relax, rather than with a group of friends. Signs everywhere caution you to "Whisper, Please", and on those occasions when I've gone with friends, the staff has often had to come remind us to do so. It's not easy to enjoy your conversation with a friend when you're constantly worried that someone is going to come tell you to shut up. For a quiet, meditative spa experience, though, it's a delight. On a busy winter afternoon it can be a bit crowded, although I've never found it impossibly crowded. This little gem is one of my special joys of living on Capitol Hill. read more

Like someone else has said, don't expect a regular spa. It's tight - tonight there were about 12 people in the space and the dry steam room remained full. Hot tub was heavenly and the best part for me. Four stars because the relaxation room is separated by the drink stand from the lockers and the cold plunge (I expected a tub) is one of those Haws emergency shower with a dangling pull handle. A little misleading since the sign says cold plunge. Hot House is quick and close to where I live so most of the enjoyment comes from convenience and the hot tub. read more

I discovered this place through my girlfriends, who have had a couple outings here in the past, otherwise I would never have known it was there at all. I love that there's a little oasis in the middle of the Hill. The atmosphere was so peaceful and relaxing that the feeling even emanated from the staff. Once I got in, however, I realized exactly how small the spa really was. There was an area my friend described as the relaxation room, but it wasn't much of a room, and given its location near the lockers and entrance, it didn't seem all that relaxing. I don't know if I would make a special trip to come here- I'm lucky enough to have a private hot tub at home, so I would probably only make a visit for girls' day. read more

I absolutely love the Hothouse - especially there massages. I have been so many times to many different therapists (Kelly, Joya, Louise) and it seems that each massage is better than the next. They all have very different styles, but you can tell the masseurs exactly what part of your body is hurting, or just let them do whatever. Its magical and I guarantee you will leave you walking out with a gorgeous sigh of relief "Ahh..." I recommend this place to any woman who wants a comfortable and safe place to relax and feel at peace. Only drawback: some therapists only work one day a week so its hard to snag your favorite, and due to them being directly below the ever intense Wild Rose, you can hear a lot of footsteps and banging around sometimes. read more

I love the Hothouse Spa and Sauna. I have been coming here for a few years since a friend of mine introduced me to it. I come here in the winter all the time. The place is very small but it's a great little gem tucked away. It's a womens only spa and you'll see all kinds of women here. I have never felt out of place here as it feels welcoming to all women. It's so wonderful to come and soak in the hot tub then hop out and get under the cold shower plunge then head into the sauna to dry up and get warm!! Ah man, talk about relaxation! Then when you've had enough of that you can take in the meditation room and start on the journey back to reality before it's time to head back out into the real world. The spa is $16 if you bring your own towel. The spa provides filtered water with lime and you can stay as long as you want. You can also schedule a massage. I've never had one here but it sounds devine. The prices are posted and seem very reasonable. It's a bit annoying that it's cash only but they do take checks. read more

I consider myself a little bit of a sauna connoisseur. I need my sauna fix on a weekly basis, and I've shopped around. I've been to bayna5 in SLU (gorgeous, coed, more fixings, but more than double the price of HH), Olympic spa in Lynnwood (so fantastic, but also expensive and farther away) and also many of the saunas that the Y has to offer (the downtown branch is the shit!). But the Hot House is where I go on the regular now. Why? Because it's inexpensive (a punch card for 10 visits is $125), it's usually pretty empty when I go (early afternoons) and it's pretty relaxing. I especially like that they have a rest area where you can lie down. Parking sucks and I wish they had more amenities, but hey, it's Cap Hill, and you get what you pay for. read more

This barely qualifies as a spa, and has fewer amenities than you would find at an LA Fitness. To give you the sense of the scale: - I came here at 4 pm on a Saturday, and was the third person to show up that day. The lady at the front desk gave me a tour of all the amenities (and had me give her my credit card before giving the tour), I guess because there was only one other customer in the spa at the time. - There was one hot tub. The "cold plunge" was a shower of the sort you would find in a high school chemistry lab. - There was a steam room (which smelled nice - basically the only good thing about this place) and a sauna (of the sort that you would find at LA Fitness). There were no other rooms. - The "relaxation room" had two seats, and was located in the same room as the lockers. - There were two showers in the entire spa (excluding the cold plunge), and they were in the same space, with no barrier between them. - There was no dedicated holding area for shoes (the front desk person told me to put my shoes under a bench). There were lockers for clothes, but I ended up leaving my key in the lock the whole time because they didn't have the key bracelets that every other spa has, and there was nowhere to put the key. - The showers had soap and (low quality) shampoo, but no conditioner. Typically spa showers are supposed to be really nice, but I was very underwhelmed. - They charge you $1 to rent a towel. Every other spa I've been to gives you towels for free, and treats them as part of the experience. They did not give me a uniform to wear in the relaxation room. This spa was $18, which is much cheaper than any spa I've found in Seattle, so I guess I got what I paid for. But I still felt ripped off. I honestly think this place mostly has good reviews because (a) it's way cheaper than other spas (b) the lady at the front desk is nice and tries to make up for the subpar facilities with good customer service. read more

I go to the Hothouse for a calming, no-fuss no-frills hot soak and sauna. Sometimes that's all I want, and the price is right for that. I've been mostly with friends and really enjoy the atmosphere. I haven't yet tried the massage therapists, though I plan to. If you want someplace where you can go and talk as loudly as you like, go to the Olympus Spa (also a great place, but pricier). The ambience isn't the same there; it's less a relaxing soak and more a chatting place with more variety of temperatures, which is perfect when you're looking for a getaway with the girls, but for a calming soak with little to distract me, I'll go to the Hothouse. EDIT: I had a truly lovely massage tonight from Jen. My first massage here, and it felt so good that I booked another for next week with the same therapist. I love this place so much. I just moved away from Seattle and am missing Hothouse pretty hard core. It's not a super glam spa, if you want that pay $40 and head to Olympus in Lynnwood. But for what hot house is it's perfect. Reception is always friendly, the place is always clean and facilities well maintained. This place is sooo cozy, warm and relaxing, that I am considering buying the $100 punch card (10 visits, towel and lock). My finale at the HotHouse was a power nap under a soft warm blanket on the lounge area. I really passed out and felt very refreshed afterward. I just went for the first time and I had heard about it but didnt have the energy to go to Olympus so I decided to give it a try. It was a Friday night and it was not busy. I felt I had plenty of space. For some decent chunks of times, I was the only one in the tub and the steam room. Since the place is small people dont stay for to long so thats nice too. The staff were very friendly and I appreciated the whisper only policy. There were a few people that came in groups but Id like if people would come alone so everyone is completely quiet. I wont bring a towel next time, you can get one for a small fee. That way the trip is more spontaneous. read more

She worked out all the tension that had been building up for months, and threw in hot stones as well, which at any other place I would have been charged extra for. Everyone here is always incredibly nice, I never feel uncomfortable, and will definitely be back for more! Some things to know: They don't require appts. for massage, but usually book quickly, so it is better to plan ahead with an appt. I feel like I'm wrapped in a cocoon of relaxation within the earth at this place. Yes, it is a little space tucked into a basement with a Bar?!!! upstairs, but you wouldn't know it. I enjoy the ability to meditate on the heated floor, or in the dry Sauna. The steam room also has a lovely scent, and the fact that I can stay as long as I want is a glorious thing. This is something just for me. I get away, hide from the world, and enjoy all things water and warm. The massage experience I've had here has also been well worth it. The options/choices of therapies offered makes it quite a deal! Where else can you get a Hot Rock or a Sound Therapy massage for the same price as any other massage? The Saturday night girl is also what I envision a massage therapist to be, she's at least 6' tall, and strong enough to rub all of the aches out of my muscles. After wandering up and down Pine street looking for this place on a rare, snow covered November afternoon, I called to ask for directions. The attendant who directed me around the corner to the back of the building and down the stairs to the basement was very helpful and friendly. Upon entering, she gave us a quick run down of how the spa works: there is a hot tub, steam room, and sauna. There is no talking or alcohol. There is free water. Towels are $1 each to borrow (you will need at least 2- one for sitting on in the steam room that gets soaked and one to dry off at the end of your visit). The place itself is *very* intimate (meaning small, not romantic). I found it relaxing and comfortable if you're there alone or with friends but I can't imagine sharing the place with more than 1 or 2 other patrons who I don't know. I did enjoy myself, but I would suggest including towel use in the price, playing audible music (it was so soft it was questionable whether it was on), and dropping the price a little- in my opinion it's not worth $22 but I would definitely go frequently if it were 15 bucks. read more

This place is awesome! Went here with a girlfriend on a Saturday around 1 pm, and as usual in Seattle it was pouring rain so getting into the hot tub and soaking was a much needed comfort. The entrance is definitely hard to find, and google street view is absolutely no help, but I love it's hidden away like a precious gem. When we arrived everything was carefully explained to us, we were showed around the facility, and I loved that there was a place to hang our coats up as they were wet from the rain. I took the advice of some other yelpers on here and brought 2 of my own towels and it helped greatly. I thoroughly enjoyed my time here and what minor inconveniences there are with the small space the price more than makes up for it. The only thing I would look to improve is eventually getting a bigger bathroom with more mirror space and stalls. I would love to see lotions in the eucalyptus and lavender scents that could be for general use so that you could slather yourself after soaking before getting dressed again. Pros: 1. Locker key can clip on to towel so you never have to carry it or lose it 2. The low voice policy 3. The music selection is top notch and at an appropriate volume for the area 4. All the other women I have encountered so far were super respectful and polite, very respectful of space and mindful of others around them 5. Love the rest area where I can go when I want to drink water and lay down for a minute 6. Greatly appreciate the no time limit on your visit 7. Sauna was the perfect temp so the heat didn't sear my lungs and i loved the smell Con: 1. Small locker room area makes it difficult to maneuver with more than 3 people (could use some more seating for that area) 2. The water for the cold plunge shower is frigidly cold, far to cold in my opinion when going from a hot tub. I love this place. My gf and I go all the time. It is "nothing fancy" but just what a girl needs to feel good. There is a nice tub area, steam and sauna, lockers, showers, and a nice place to relaz after and put on lotions. It is not too large, so there is a limit on how many people can use the space at once. They are open late though, maybe 11 pm, the spot is kind of hidden... down some stairs (but you will see the sign) find some parking pn the st in Cap Hill can be tricky (so you might have to park a few blocks) which means you WILL want something warm to wear to walk BACK to your car from the sauna. MMM I LOVE this place. My gf and I try to go together whenever I am in town. Clothing optional, women only. We even did a party here before a wedding - it was nice.
