This restaurant is still proving to be a delightful and favorite place to dine. For many years it was MY 'place to be', but at some point it seemed to have somewhat lost its mojo. In recent years however, it was re-invented and oh my, the food, atmosphere AND service are all on point. Hotdog! They've added MORE delectable dishes to the menu such as the down home pot roast, honest gold mashers, red wine mushroom gravy and garlic green beans and they are fire! From the presentation to every single bite...all are most flavorful and filling. Another hot item is the famous Thai wings. These are among THE Best I've ever experienced and they keep me coming back for more. No matter what I choose these MUST BE ordered as well. The grilled Atlantic salmon, house salad and vegetables are great as well for those that choose to dine meatless. Whatever the fare it will be well worth the trip and then some! Also, the service has been pleasingly pleasant which is essential to my dining experience. Bad service will keep me at home or finding another restaurant to spend my coins, for sure! The ambiance is inviting and there are TV's conveniently displayed throughout some of the restaurants for the sports enthusiasts. I would rare the food a 4 and the service and atmosphere an 2. After sitting at our table a while I asked our hostess if she could get our server. She came a few minutes later after walking by saying she had too much going on. She hurriedly took our order seeming put out that she had too much wait on us. My husband wanted to order another beer but she never checked back on us to ask if we needed anything. I had crème brûlée for dessert that I had asked to have to go. She brought it out and it was just dumped in a box and looked terrible. They were just trying to get us out the Door. Houlihan's is my go-to happy hour spot. Excellent cocktails and many to choose from. Their dinner options are great as well and they make everything in house! (Even their sauces!!) I love that they rotate their seasonal menus throughout the year and still keep their classic menu if you have some favs you want to stick with. Can't express enough how great this place is and the service is above & beyond. If the weather is nice, definitely check out their patio seating! read more

Wanted to swing in for some food around holidays, the place was packed with locals and they had the Saturday football games on which was a bonus. I got the heartland chicken salad and my husband got the burger with fries. Both were very tasty, the only thing I might add is that I hope they bring back the homemade honey mustard sauce and ranch. Went to Houlihan's for lunch yesterday, the food was very good, my husband had the Pot Roast, the meat was very tender and juicy, I had their new Wagyu meatloaf which was very different from other restaurant meatloafs and I will be back for it again it was delicious. I need to give a shoutout to our waitress Bre who was very attentive and nice. The other person I want to mention is Kara, she is the kitchen manager and she is awesome. I'm sorry to report that this place has gone downhill considerably in the last year. Houlihan's used to be one of my standbys. I always knew I could get a really good meal there in a really good atmosphere. But then inflation gave me less money to spend on eating out, so I hadn't been back in a while. I recently stopped by on a rainy Wednesday evening, and was really dismayed by the poor food and service. I arrived at 8:00, and there were very few customers inside. I stood for maybe five minutes while several servers fiddled with items on the empty tables before anyone noticed me and showed me to a seat. And of course, all the prices had risen by several dollars, like everything everywhere else. But I had a coupon for 20% off, and I really needed a good meal in a comforting atmosphere. My server was friendly, but not what you'd call attentive. I ordered the Chicken Parmesan with Noodles for $18.99. It arrived in a decent amount of time, but my server only showed up two minutes after it was put it in front of me to ask if he could get me anything else. Then he disappeared until after my meal was finished. While the chicken patty was quite large, it was burned underneath. Not black, but a very deep brown that made it difficult to cut, and crunchy on the bottom - not the way it's supposed to be. The flavor wasn't terrible, and it didn't taste burnt, but it wasn't very good, either. It probably would've tasted much better if it had been cooked properly. I debated about sending it back, but realized the place was probably struggling. I didn't want to see them waste a dinner or wait for another to be prepared, so I let it go. Along with the chicken patty topped with sauce and cheese, there was a pile of noodles. Surely there must have been something mixed in with them, but if so, I couldn't taste it. There did seem to be some green dots, so maybe it was just oil and herbs. The noodles, too, could have been much better. They were extremely bland. Let me be clear that this was an entrée I ordered, not an appetizer. Usually entrées consist of a complete meal, but there was no sign of a vegetable anywhere on my plate, not even the obligatory lettuce leaf. (Maybe the tomato sauce was supposed to be the vegetable.) I did notice a blurb on the menu offering a salad or side for an additional $4.95, but I felt I was spending enough as it was. After I finished my plate, I sat for a few minutes until my server appeared with the check. He seemed cordial enough, but didn't ask how everything had tasted or if I wanted dessert. When I was a waitress this was considered a lazy way of serving - bring the menu/bring the drinks/take the order/bring the meal/bring the check. The barest minimum. In between visits, you get to talk to your coworkers. For those five short visits, you expect to get 15-20% of the total as a tip. And I did leave the customary tip. But I wasn't happy with the service or the food. Also, when I left I noticed that the floor near the Hostess Stand was very dirty, and littered with lots of leaves and debris. I nearly took a picture, but at that point, I just wanted to leave. I also noticed when I visited the Ladies Room earlier that one of the taps was constantly running, and wouldn't shut off - not a good sign. It makes me very sad to see how far Houlihan's has fallen. They've already closed two locations near me, which is another reason I haven't been back in a while. But the $3.75 discount I got wasn't worth the burned food, bland noodles, and perfunctory service. Not sure I'll be going back. read more

Houlihan's: Where Dipping Becomes a Sport and Noodles Take the Hard Way Out Last night, my wife and I ventured here,, a spot that came highly recommended by, well, a gift card. The service? Impeccable. Our server was on it, like a ninja with a notepad, anticipating every need except maybe a noodle hammer. I ordered the French Dip, a sandwich I hold near and dear. Taste-wise? Absolutely delicious. But then came the au jus. The dipping bowl was so deep, I was convinced they were auditioning for a new Olympic sport: synchronized sandwich diving. Seriously, you'd have to chop the sandwich into strips and lower it down like you're playing some weird culinary claw game. Points for taste though--it was worth the effort. French fries, however, had clearly seen better days. Maybe they were training to be croutons in another life? Now my wife, always one for a wild card, ordered the Chicken Piccata. But plot twist: it comes with Alfredo sauce! Chicken Piccata and Alfredo--two dishes that should never meet on a plate. Like having a fish at a rodeo--it's just confusing. She smartly skipped the Alfredo sauce, but the noodles, well... they were determined to stay al dente. So al dente, in fact, that even her fingernail couldn't make a dent. It was like the noodles were forged in the depths of Mordor. Finally, dessert: the butter cake with caramel sauce. It was fine. You know when a dessert is just... there? It wasn't bad, but it wasn't making any grand exit with fireworks either. All in all, it was an interesting adventure. Long Story Short, this is my happy hour location preference. Best bar tenders in KC! I have been going there for years . I only sit in the bar area and have had so many great Long Island Teas! This is the spot to grab a drink before dinner or going out. Now, the food..... it's never been for me. I just left my mothers apartment and was heading out to get a bite to eat when I drove by Houlihan's in Lee Summit. It was just after five on a Sunday in the parking lot wasn't busy so I figured I'd swing in. The restaurant was really quite slow and there were eight people sitting at the bar so I pulled up and got a seat. Houlihan's, as you probably know, has been around for quite some time. Menu doesn't change much and has several classic items such as their stuffed mushrooms and their meatloaf. Tonight I decided to get a drawer of Yingling and to take advantage of the menu combo that they offer. Tonight I ordered for stuffed mushrooms, the number nine meatloaf and a cheesecake. I also added a side salad with blue cheese dressing. One nice touch, the side salad actually comes with real blue cheese crumbles. The lettuce is the shredded iceberg style. And there were plenty of blue cheese crumbles, and it came served with blue cheese dressing. About the time I finish my salad my shrooms came out. Either the oil needs to be changed or they were cooked just a little too long because they were an unappealing color of brown in a little on the crispy side. My memory, I have me thinking of a mildly horseradish, spicy dipping sauce. However, the sauce would be best described as wet and absolute flavor. I ate two and gave the two remaining shrooms back to be cleared. I was now sitting, waiting for my late loaf, drinking my beer and staring at my salad bowl and appetizer plate that hadn't been cleared by the bartender. My meatloaf arrived sitting on a bed of mashed potatoes, circled by flavorless green beans. There was about a cup of onion strings piled on top of meatloaf that was simply too much. I took most of those off and set them on my appetizer plate, then took my first bite , the first thought that came to my mind was where is the flavor. The meatloaf was very dense and void of any discernible flavor. I was so disappointed in this experience. I think Houlihan's now goes on the drive-by list given that there are too many other options in Lee Summit to choose from. Is the concept of pre-busing not explain to wait and bar staff any longer? I don't understand why a server/bartender would walk by and see empty plates piled up around the client and not clear them off. Houli's nailed it. NAILED IT! I met a dear friend I hadn't seen for almost a year and we had a lot to catch up on...translation... we were there for awhile. We started with appetizers of mushrooms, cauliflower and wings. Everything was cooked right, delish and delivered hot. I had the pre-fix dinner of a dinner salad (balsamic dressing and blue cheese crumbles, YUM!) meatloaf with mashed and I upgraded to the ooey gooey butter cake with caramel drizzle. All were excellent and there was plenty to take home. The drinks... well, it was almost too funny. If you've been to Houlihan's, you know they have a great cocktail menu. And those cocktails generally have several types of alcohol in them. As it happens, the prevalent "supply chain" issues affecting the rest of the world have affected Houli's too. Working with what they DID have in stock, and with the help of our server Brian, we cobbled together our drinks. But it took some creative thinking. Finally, about Brian.... he was fantastic. This guy was everywhere he needed to be and when he needed to be there. He was personable and upbeat. He could have been angry/defensive due to the alcohol supply issues that put him in a position of having to tell his customers how sorry he was but... Nope, he handled it all with humor and helpfulness. As someone with a long history of leading teams, I recognize this kid as GOLD. Brian represents Houlihan's with professionalism and humor. He has a great future ahead of him. He's a hard worker, has a knack for business, is personable and is exploring common sense plans his life. Well done Houli's!
