First thought when I entered through the doors: chaos. The walkway was narrow and baked pies were displayed at the aisle without covers. Came to House of Pies but did not get any pies. Ordered the mozzarella sticks, fish and chips which came with cream of potato soup, and chocolate ice cream sundae. The mozzarella sticks were from a frozen box. The fish was over fried and dry. I had brunch here yesterday and I enjoyed my banana and pecan pancakes. These pancakes are ginormous lol I took the rest home. We ordered a Oreo Cheesecake on May 18th to pick up on 19th. When my husband got there they knew nothing abt it! Nicolaus took order was very nice but didn't put order in! We got a Oreo cheesecake , it was for my grandson's graduation! There were 8 of us! The cheesecake was a huge disappointment, everyone only took a bite and no more! It had a weird yellow color to it! I got frustrated w/her attitude and said Bullshit so she hung up on me! I called back and spoke to her again still Rude! I cook from scratch every night. Always have. I detest fast food and most restaurant food takes processed. And if I am expected to pay for good, hot food and service - I want just that. But if that happens - I tip well - very well. Hubby wanted to try House of Pies so I said . . . sure, let's go. Friday night - ***** (5 stars) sat towards middle of restaurant. 1/2 full. They were busy. But waiter came by immediately and greeted us, took our drink order (tea/soft drink) and was back in a flash with them and water. We asked for a few more minutes since we were HOP newbies. I was watching this waiter - he was moving. Keeping up with all of his tables. We eventually ordered breakfast for dinner . . . and that food came out correct, hot and within a reasonable amount of time. But the best part of the experience was the waiter. He didn't interrupt our conversations to ask if we needed anything. He was always pleasant. Always smiling. Positive. But if he saw an empty tea glass - he would fill it. He made certain we had the condiments for our food before the food was brought out. I asked for extra ice in the beginning - he made certain I always had ice. He served the appetizers which were eaten and dishes cleared away BEFORE the dinner arrived. And the food was hot. That was no small feat given the sheer number of tables he was waiting on. It was actually a surprisingly, perfectly enjoyable experience. Saturday night - * (1 star). My husband warned me that we shouldn't go back because our 1st and only experience was stellar. But I told him I wanted to try one of the sandwiches this time. So we ventured back. Restaurant was again full. We were seated right away. Waitress greeted us; took drink orders and brought them. We asked for more time to look at the extensive menu and she asked right then and there - so what do you want? I reiterated that we needed a few more minutes and she just stood there. Waiting. Silent. Awkward to say the least. Hubby then asked that she give us more time and she left. But she really left . . . as in . . . about 8 minutes later . . . . we had to flag her down to order. We ordered an appetizer that we were told was not spicy. She then asked about our main choice. We told her we hadn't decided yet (and we weren't in a hurry). Don't think she was pleased with that answer. So she placed the appetizer order and came back again for the main choice. So we ordered dinner at that time. Appetizers showed up about 12 minutes later. Despite being told it was not spicy, it was. But they were served on a large platter. So we asked for smaller plates. She said ok. And then left. And never came back. When we realized we weren't getting our plates - we started eating the appetizers by just eating over the larger platter we placed in the middle of the table. About 20% into the appetizers - here she comes with the dinner food. So now we have appetizers and dinner simultaneously . . . From that point forward - everything just went downhill. It was like she was purposefully ignoring us. My husband had to get up to ask for a drink refill. I eventually had to get up to ask for a tea refill. We had to ask for a condiment we requested with dinner from another waiter. Our waitress seemingly made an effort to stay away. And while this was all happening - her tip was getting smaller and smaller by the minute. What she didn't realize is that the night before when our experience was stellar - we left a cash tip of 60%. It was such a wonderful night of good, hot food with great service. I guess my husband was right - we should have stayed away. Anyway.- she never made an effort to check on us until we were almost done. I waited for another tea refill that never came. We just got tired of looking for her to actually service us. What I don't like is that they use portable CC machines to process the check at the table. While the server is standing there - you are expected to decide on and initiate a tip. Anyway - we left a tip on a CC of 12%. I told my husband I should have tipped the waiter on Friday night 100% - he was that good now that we experienced the opposite. The crust is not good, it may be the same crust they use on every pie, but it just does not go with the coconut cream pie. The filling is good. I grew up on coconut cream pie; My grandmother used to make it for Thanksgiving and Christmas so I have high expectations and this does not meet it. It's also topped with half an inch of whipped cream, which one is a little bit too much and wasteful, but two, my opinion, coconut cream pie is supposed to have a meringue top. My mom wanted House of Pies for Christmas dinner and she wanted it delivered. When I checked the website to order it stated they were not doing DoorDash or uber eats at that time. I drove over and ordered a bunch of food to go. Out of this large order I got 2 Christmas dinners turkey, stuffing and green beans (didn't get the yams didn't get the salad or soup or dinner roll). The turkey was burnt and so dry that it was crunchy. I ordered other meals as well so thankfully there was something else to eat as these 2 Christmas meals went in the trash. My friends and I like to come here after we go two-stepping at Whiskey River West, and it's one of the few places that's open. Our server is always Rachel and she's great! They serve breakfast all day. I like the cottage fries because they're basically flattened tater tots / hash browns. The almond cheesecake didn't taste like almond to me at all, but the turtle cheesecake is good. Eggs have always been bland. Prices are decent and the food never takes too long, even for a group.
