They decided that all four tires needed to be replaced, plus a couple other things, and quoted over a thousand dollars (!!!). I said how about you patch the flat tire and I'll come pick it up- which they refused (!!!- they professed deep concern about our "safety" lol). Since it was now mid-afternoon the day before Independence Day, I scrambled to find some other place to tow it; Mavis gets much better reviews and stays open until 8:30 pm, so they fit the bill. It cost me $140 to tow it on my own dime (AAA will only tow once per "incident" ugh), but then they patched the tire no problem for $32. The tires are fine: no "dry rot" as claimed at AAA. I just wish we'd had the good sense to take it to Mavis in the first place!!!

When I called to ask about alternatives, they only reduced the price by $20. That felt excessive, so I decided to get a second opinion. I ended up going to NC Complete Auto Care, where the radiator fan was replaced for $881. They didn't charge for refilling the antifreeze and said the thermostat wasn't an issue and did not need to be replaced. They also let me know I could safely wait on the tires for a couple more months. I appreciated the transparency and will be taking my business there from now on. I can't recommend Cary Car Care based on my experience.

No call or text Wednesday 10/23/24 so I called at the end of the day and was told they hadn't started working on the car yet but I was in the queue for the work to be done in the morning. I called today Thursday 10/24/24 and they still hadn't touched the car! And that's when the mechanic told me the appt. was for the 30th. I realize it was my mistake on the scheduling but why didn't the check in lady tell me I had the day wrong? And why didn't someone notice yesterday when the car was sitting there all day? And why did they say the car was in queue to be worked on in the morning? I'm on my way out of town for a family emergency and this messed me up so badly. I've been calling all over to see if I could get a rush job on the work. Really terrible service and I will never go back here or recommend them. Update: I appreciate the businesses response but there was another aspect of this situation that bothered me. When I realize the date mistake I asked the guy who answered the phone if they could squeeze me in. He said: if someone who has an appointment doesn't show up or cancels we can get you in. But I can't make any guarantees. I kind of expected that he'd try to see if he could accommodate me but he just said sorry...can't do anything. And I would feel differently if he had at least shown some empathy.

At that point, I no longer felt confident they could diagnose the issue, so I took the car to another mechanic. The second shop identified the actual source of the leak: a broken plastic piece on the oil filter housing where the oil cooler connects. They replaced the entire oil filter housing assembly, and the leak was resolved. From this, I realized that the incorrect part had been replaced initially. Based on what I learned, the plastic housing is the common failure point, not the metal cooler itself. Many mechanics recommend replacing the full housing to stop leaks. When I asked Neal's Garage for a refund, they refused and told me I should bring the car back again under their warranty. However, after two unsuccessful repair attempts, I didn't feel comfortable returning for a third try. At this point, I don't feel confident trusting them with anything beyond basic maintenance.
