5-star company in so many ways! I was referred to Hoyt after an extremely botched duct install in our $1.5 million home. The owner Danny is an amazing human.... kind, patient, knowledgeable, honest and very experienced in this business. I am grateful I was referred to him. Finally 7 months later we have functioning and efficient ducts! Backstory: I chose another company to replace our old ductwork from the 1950s based on their reviews, plus they were servicing our HVAC for a few years. They even replaced our heat pump unit 3 years ago in this very home so I thought I'd stick with them. They also came in way lower compared to other bids. I didn't realize ductwork replacement is completely different than a technician servicing or installing a new unit. After the duct install I realized our home was not cooling the way it used to. We had to use portable air-conditioning units ALL summer because something was off. I called the company back multiple times and several of their technicians could not diagnose what was wrong. Even the owner and senior manager came out and they said only one of the ducts needed to be attached better but even after doing that one adjustment nothing improved. Their HERS guy dropped by and said the registers were all blowing air fine. After the company abandoned me since they couldn't figure out the problem I called Hoyt to do an audit because I KNEW something was terribly wrong. They created a 15-page report showing over 50 code violations, it was crazy! No wonder our home wasn't working the same way, even when we had ancient ducts! I called the City of Sacramento after I TOLD the other company to apply for a permit since they never did (which they agreed to). I then showed the City the audit report and they said it would never pass a HERS test. They sent the installer the correction notice but I knew I didn't want them stepping foot back in here. I also dealt with the Contractor State Licensing Board and was able to get a partial refund after much negotiation with the installer. I then hired Hoyt right away to redo the entire project. Here we are 7 months later and we now have brand new functioning ductwork in our home that feels and LOOKS amazing, thanks to ductwork that is installed like a textbook. Having intermittent trouble with my heating unit. Another company came out and they could not find the problem. I called Hoyt mechanical; this is the third company coming out to look at this issue. Technician that came out to troubleshoot the unit found the problem with in about 20 minutes. They came back with the part that was needed next day and the heating works fantastic better than it ever has. Hoyt Mechanical is a fantastic company, keeps you informed and fantastic customer service. Hard to find these days, I highly recommend this company to do any work you need. read more

Hoyt mechanical has serviced our home a number of times over the years. The admin staff who makes the appointments are always so friendly. What's really awesome is the scheduler person gives you the technicians name and advises when we can anticipate a call or an on-site arrival. The techs are always polite, personable and provide education on how the issue occurred, including any preventive maintenance we can do to prevent or reduce occurrences. I had issues with my heater that would work intermittently. I called Hoyt Mechanical and I was able to schedule an appointment and they took care of me right away. They were even able to call me back for a sooner appointment as requested. When the technicians arrived, they were friendly, professional, and respectful of my home. They tinkered with the furnace and troubleshooted some of the issues. They had to come back at a later date for another appointment to get on my roof (which is on the 3rd floor with no interior access). I use a home warranty policy, Hoyt was dispatched. I made an appointment and specifically asked that I am first on the docket for that day as I am an educational therapist and a single mom, I can't miss my student's therapy or lose income. I gave them a time frame that covered most of the window and they PROMISED I would be first. I even waited longer to get that specific time. Apparently the owner decided to change that without notifying me so I'm waiting and waiting and no technician. I called and asked what was going on and all they said was, "Well, that's the window." I truly was dreading being tied up all day with the project but these three guys made it easy for me deal with it. The office staff coordinates the field and made sure the parts were available. Very communicative and helpful. These folks don't advertise on tv. Danny, Tom, Tyler, and Jason (with some help from inspector Roger) just finished an all-day installation of a new unit to replace our 42-year-old system. They did such a great job! There were a couple of surprises along the way -- normal for a house from 1950 -- and they took it all in stride. Everything was explained in advance, all the costs were known, I got reminder texts for the appointment a few days before, they called on the day of the appointment, they arrived on time, all the paperwork was carefully explained, and they cleaned up after everything. It was a great experience. This was a home warranty replacement at the height of the heat of summer! At first I was surprised that it was going to take so long to get on their schedule, but I checked around and everybody had a long wait list -- AC units go kaput when it's hot, who knew? But! The super-nice office ladies called me when there was a cancellation and got me in a week early. How awesome is that? This is a great crew with a great attitude. They work fast and hard and don't complain, they made recommendations for other maintenance, they were polite and were just amazing. Great work, Hoyt Mechanical! I am so happy! read more

Hoyt was sent to us by our home warranty when we couldn't get our furnace to turn on. Hoyt determines that BOTH of the thermostats died at exactly the same time, and replaced both (when maybe it was really a mother board problem... or really, who knows?) Then any time we tried to turn the furnace/heat on, the AC unit would also come on (no, it's NOT a heat pump) and both would run at the same time. Long story short, Hoyt came out a few times. The AC quit coming on... well now it's AC time of year and the darn thing won't turn on. I have had NOTHING but problems with my whole HVAC unit since Hoyt touched it. I've spent hundreds of dollars trying to get it fixed. Even today, the AC unit refuses to turn off unless I physically remove the downstairs thermostat from the wall, switching it off just isn't enough. I will be calling someone else to come take a look... again. read more

These folks may be OK at replacing entire HVAC units, but in my experience they don't troubleshoot at all. I asked for an assessment about a year ago, and was told that the entire unit was bad and needed replaced. My sense is that they would rather not perform maintenance and repairs, but just go straight to complete replacement. This was the case recently when they wanted nearly $10,000 to replace our HVAC unit when the heater portion failed. All that was required to get it back in service was a new motor at under $1,000. read more

I have used HOYT for various repairs in recent years at my rental property. They have always done a good job ( pre-sale and post-sale) and at very reasonable price. Last year at the peak of the summer heat, my AC unit broke down and couldn't get anybody out because there were many others also affected by the heat. The company owner, Danny, responded to my inquiry and was able to squeeze me in. I liked how he took my issues seriously after the service when I showed him some minor misplacement of the wires ( cosmetic, not mechanical issue). He came back the next day first thing in the morning to just put the wires back. Because of the fantastic post-sales service, I love to have HOYT continues to service my HVAC at my rental property. read more

These guys are champs! The AC went out at my Dad's home, where he lives alone and was just diagnosed with Stage 3 Blood and Bone cancer. Hoyt wasn't going to be able to come out for 5 days. They offered to put us on a cancellation list. Hoyt Mechanical not only failed to fix my heating problem this winter, they actually made it worse! My house has heating controls for both the upstairs and downstairs; apparently the upstairs furnace valve was not closing properly, so anytime we tried to get the first floor to warm up, the upstairs would heat up like an oven. My home warranty company sent a service person from Hoyt Mechanical to repair. When he finished the repair we turned on the downstairs unit and heat continued to pump out, just as strong as ever through the upstairs vents. The guy said it was fine, that there will always be some leakage with these types of units. I said, this wasn't improved at all and that I wasn't going to pay for it if they weren't going to properly complete the repair. After calling his boss, instead of trying to fix it, the guy rips out whatever he added and leaves. I called up Troy from Elite Heating and Air, who had looked at the system shortly before the repair. Fortunately he was able to fix the leakage problem with minimal work. But he also told me that Hoyt Mechanical cut into the plenum, permanently damaging the integrity of the system! This is something no competent repairman would ever do! To make a long story short, I would strongly advise against using this company under any circumstances! read more

I was required to use Hoyt Mechanical through my home warranty. Ugh. I requested a service request on a Sunday and was told I'd be contacted from Hoyt on Monday. After that didn't happen, I called on Tuesday to set up my own appointment... I knew right there this was going to be a bad experience. I got an appointment set up for 3 days out, not ideal but given it was a hot week I assumed there'd be a lot of appointments booked out. The guy showed up and was terribly unprofessional, honestly he looked like he had just gotten out of prison. He knocked and just started coming in without an introduction or offering to put on booties and was on the phone for most of the service call talking to someone about what he was doing..... ummmmm. You know so little about what you're doing that you need to be on the phone literally the entire service call? After an hour or so I was told it was a compressor valve that needed replacing but the part had to be ordered. I paid the home warranty service fee (which they promptly cashed) and was told someone would call me to set up the install service. After a few days, and no calls, I contacted the home warranty company, and was told I'd be getting an entire new compressor (with a small additional fee). Score! The part took over a week to get in, which was super obnoxious as I already stated it was in the middle of summer and very hot out. Once the part arrived two technicians came to install it, it took most of a day because they ended up having to replace the thermostat, and a bad capacitor in the attic. Unfortunately, they didn't tighten the cap all the way so all of the freon leaked and someone had to come back out, fill it up and put a new cap on. The only reason this review is not getting 1 star is because Hoyt had to come out to my house 3 times with 3 different technicians, and although the quality of the work was pretty bad, they didn't once suggest I'd have to pay an additional service fee. Hoyt Mechanical has now saved me twice - once in the middle of winter when I was freezing, and now once in the middle of summer when it was boiling in my house! This winter, my OLD heater broke down. Another company came out and told me it wasn't fixable - that I was going to have to pay THOUSANDS to get a new heater. Hoyt came out and they were very honest with me - they told me that my heater IS old (and basically a POS) but that it could be fixed for now. They charged me less than $100 for the entire visit. When we can afford to replace the hunk of junk, I'll definitely be calling them! Just this week I called because it was roasting in my house. They got someone to my house THE NEXT DAY. Do not use this company! Believe the negative reviews that the other reviewers posted. The technician showed up disheveled, was not knowledgeable and did not complete a full inspection of the system. The technician agreed that the thermostats were not working properly and reading the temperature accurately. He wrote on the invoice "thermostats are not turning off/on at set temperature. Thermostat programming not working". That was over a week ago and I did not hear back from them. Now I just learned from the home warranty that they claim that there are no issues with the system. What?!?! And, after he left, I realized that he didn't even put the thermostat back on right. I will never use this company again and warn everyone to stay away!! I wish I had read these reviews before I scheduled the service call with them. $65 down the drain. read more

This company was dispatched by my home warranty to check our air conditioner which had stopped working during a heat wave of multiple triple digit days. We had guessed it was the fan that needed replacing since the unit ran but the fan would stop after a short time, thus pushing warm air into the house. The guy came out and stated the fan needed replacing but because our unit was too old he couldn't read the part specs so would call around the next morning to find the part. He didn't even pull the part to take with him to match at a parts distributor! If you can't read the specs, and you don't have the part, how the hell are you going to find a replacement?!!! I never received a call the next day. The following day, I got a message from the warranty company with an update on my claim. Called them back. Wait times were in excess of 30 minutes. After multiple attempts and long hold times I finally reached them only to learn that the reason they had called was to tell me my claim was denied!!! The Hoyt tech had told them that the unit "looked like it hadn't been used in some time" so the warranty denied our claim as pre-existing! The tech never stated that to us! I was livid! Of course the unit wasn't being used...it was broken!! Furthermore the tech didn't pull the part or bother to find the part it apparently needed. Lazy!!! Also it was obvious they didn't want to come back since they are based about 30 miles from me. I spent the better part of the last week trying to get the claim denial overturned just based on the Hoyt tech's cavalier comment that the unit hadn't been used because he was too lazy to come back! After further review, the home warranty reversed their denial. Needless to say I demanded a different hvac company be assigned to do the repair and after reading some of these reviews, it's a good call. Never EVER let Hoyt evaluate or work on your equipment. , especially if doing so under your home warranty. What a nightmare! read more

They mis-diagnosed the problem twice. 2nd guy yelled at my tenant when my tenant tried to explain the symptoms of the failure. They never fixed the problem, now I'm working with a new contractor.
