Huckleberry's is a solid breakfast/brunch option in the area. There are several locations throughout California, but I wanted to take some time to write about the one in Benicia. I have dined at Huckleberry's - Benicia several times in the last few months and the food is always great and the service is exceptional. I am always welcomed into the establishment with genuine enthusiasm and promptness, and my servers have always been friendly, attentive, and prompt with any requests. There are many unique offerings that you don't often find in 'chain' breakfast/brunch spots, and the Benicia location executes them well. All dishes I've tried have always had generous portions and the food is consistently good. Some of my favorite dishes are Tom's Scramble (TIP: order with a runny egg instead of scrambled) and the Mardi Gras Beignets. The perfect combination of savory and sweet! Pricing for dishes is also very reasonable. There are many more things I'm looking forward to trying at Huckleberry's. Looking forward to my next visit. read more

Food was very good. It took 20 minutes to get our order taken, it wasn't even that busy. Another 10-15 to get the food. After that they were sitting people and taking their order within 5 minutes! Then the family who sat across from us were being loud on their phones and the kids were playing dice on the table! The manager should've asked them to take the phone calls outside and maybe the kids (not little kids) to not play dice on the table because it was very noisy for the other patrons. Upbeat employees! They set the mood from the get go. Positive vibrations in the air. That alone made a huge difference. We were on our way to the industrial part of Benicia and I clearly remembered a photo of their beignets posted by a friend on Instagram. Never heard of these as shocking as it may sound. I just had to give them a try. I'm sure these are very popular. I thought these were Malasadas! What is the correct pronunciation? Bay nets or beg nets? Forget about it! I just requested for those fried donuts. Waitress responded, "Beg nets?" This got me laughing. There may be variations to this recipe, but to me it tasted like a fried pancake. If you allow them to cool down, they tasted as you would expect. A donut. Not a fan of their coffee, but didn't expect Starbucks either. Fried okra and gumbo was on the bland side. However, I can appreciate bland now and then. I certainly did this time. Bland is probably best as my sodium intake is ridiculous. The California Cajun burger was good. Had it with fries. They pin a mean grilled jalapeño on top of the bun that made it complete. Also, you can't go wrong with avocado in a burger. Pretty displeased with my meal. Our server Megan was great though! Super sweet. I ordered the stuffed French toast and couldn't find a meal that had French toast AND eggs and bacon so I had to order 2 separate meals. Yay for being hungry! Reasonable wait, pretty good service, big portions, I got myself the crab cake Benedict. Beignets were cool, but I like how they put some different jelly to go with it. Wasn't a big fan of their potatoes, just my preference tho. It's because the potato slices were huge, I'll get them crispy next time. If you're not as much of a fan of potato wedges, then you'll get it. All that said, the crab cake was pretty good, cooked well. I might've had some with a better crust on it, but hey it's plenty of crab cake so I won't complain. Unfortunately my second time here and I was EXTREMELY disappointed. I was looking forward to the eating amazing food because my 1st time here was so great. This time however, service and food deserved 2 stars. The eggs in Eggs Benedict in my opinion should NEVER have an overcooked egg unless requested. I would have loved the runny yolk since the crab cake eggs Benedict was very dry! I really wanted to send it back but I was hungry and limited on time. In addition, we had to ask for the hot chocolate that never came with the kid's meal..smh such poor service today. We were thinking it was coming and it never did. We had to ask for it to go since we were pretty much done with our meal. I may come back but most likely not order any eggs Benedict again only if I have time to send back. I've always been picky and particular about the restaurants that I eat at because great customer service is not so common! Rikki remembered everything my family ordered and there was no errors or mistakes made! This is very rare to be flawless at your place of employment. The two times I've been here I have gotten sick. This place is NOT gluten free friendly. I had a side of two eggs and their juice and got sick both times. One visit was before covid and it took me a long time to want to try again. I didn't ask then, but I am curious for management to answer this: when eggs are ordered are they fresh eggs or eggs from a carton (with flour as a filler) which isn't gluten free. It was OK. I expected the food to be a bit better by the wait times we normally see for this place. We were told 20 min but waited about 35 for a table for 2. Our server took about 30 min to come over and introduce and offer water/take our drink order. We ordered waters, a mimosa, and beignets to start and our orders bc we had time to decided while waiting . Beignets came out first, everything on the plate was cold, esp the fruit "toppings" served with it. Our food came out about 2 minutes later and then the mimosa about 10 minutes after that. Nothing was hot but portions were huge, come on an empty stomach. I got a waffle and was hoping to have huckleberry syrup with it but when I asked, they just gave me more ice cold huckleberry fruit topping. Because of of COVID, I can over look this because the waitresses are still trying very hard to help out and they are still very polite. But here's the bad news so far- the food has been affected in a pronounced negative way. They used to have the tastiest, fluffy biscuits in town. Now its a hockey puk. The red potatoes are burnt and the gravy tastes like flour. I've in the past raved about Huckleberries. My suggestion is to pay the staff more to entice better cooks. Came in at 1042- was told the wait time is at 35mins. We got called at 1138. We were seated , orders taken. It's currently at 1257pm and our food has not come yet. Our server has not asked us if we needed anything while waiting, has not checked in on us. And all other customers that are seating around us have no food being served as well. Horrible Restaurant Update: 1:21pm Our food came at 1:05pm. Our food was not even freshly cook. It was cold already. My son's sandwhich was bad- he's 1st or two bites had hair on kt and he said maybe it was his, he sad cos he's hair sometimes falls off. This morning was the first time we had eaten at Huckleberry's in a few years, and we will definitely be back soon. I wish I took a picture, but by the time I remembered my plate was already almost gone. My boyfriend got the spicy crispy chicken sandwich and I got the California Benedict. They were both absolutely delicious. The hollandaise sauce was perfect, the chicken was crispy, and our Bloody Mary and mimosas were the icing on the cake. Way better than we went in expecting. I've ordered through DoorDash, and this is what made us want to come and eat at the restaurant. We waited a hour to be seated (okay, worth the wait, no problem). We sat down and ordered quickly. A hour had past. My kids were so hungry, but I still felt it would be worth the wait and plus we have already waited this long. How much longer could it be? So, after a hour of waiting the waitress came out and said it would be approximately another HOUR before our food comes out. NO your food isn't worth waiting 3 hours. We just left at this point. Ridiculous! It's completely unacceptable and disrespectful to do this to a customer. I'm disappointed to say the least. If you are hungry for breakfast or brunch, go somewhere else. They serve big, oily breakfasts that fill you up for the whole day, so you won't be disappointed by the serving size. There is a Southern influence on most of their food. The muffins are cakey, taste store-bought, and don't have any huckleberry flavor (although you can see a couple berries). But the biscuit is pretty large and tastes delicious. The corned beef is dry, but the crab cake tastes pretty good. Their potatoes are tasty and salty. The food takes a while to come, so this isn't the best place to go for a quick breakfast. Came here for breakfast one morning and was one of the first customers that morning. Staff was super friendly and seated us quickly. Very COVID safe seating, masked staff. It was nice to be able to eat inside again at a restaurant for once also. We ordered one of the basic breakfast combos which was really good as expected but the BEIGNETS; baby the beignets were so good, mind you I'd never had beignets before so this was like a best first time for me and nothing has topped them yet. You can tell she enjoys her job. But the food was horrible. The fish and chips (fried catfish) was greasy. Mad my stomach hurt. When they said lightly seasoned they literally meant it. Service was okay. Slow, but friendly. Food was garbage. The beignets were undercooked and the layers had delaminated, which probably means they were bought frozen and thawed rather than made fresh. The fried green tomatoes had almost no tomato, and it was soggy rather than crisp. The Dixie steak sandwich was just a soggy mess and the steak was overcooked. My friend ordered french toast and payed for strawberries only to get frozen strawberry sauce rather than fresh strawberries. French toast itself was okay. Only thing that was kinda good were the fries, and that's not saying much. 2/5 do not recommend.
