Hughesnet is not by any means the worst corporate villain out there, and their products will not kill you like cigarettes, known and deadly automotive defects and medical devices with documented (and lethal) side effects, to name a few, but if you have any other alternative for internet service then by all means buy that rather than getting Hughesnet Gen 5 internet satellite. Like their dishonest, disreputable and more deadly corporate cousins, Hughesnet places profit and share price ahead of morality, honest and simple human decency, although as indicated their satellite internet will not kill you (unless you kill yourself because Netflix streaming is so unwatchable that you throw yourself off of a cliff). The basic fact that potential customers need to realize is that the advertised speeds do not match the quality of what you realize on your TV. Not even close - you might get a speed test result of 25 MBPS on testmynet.com, but the quality of the viewing is as the Netflix speed test indicates, which is consistently around 0.5 MBPS. And there is nothing they can do apparently to fix that. It must have to do with the way satellite internet works at this point in time. Cover up is then the name of the game here when you discover that the service does not work for streaming as they advertise, and nothing they do can fix the problem, as happened to me and many others judging by the very poor reviews Never admit anything is the strategy - deny, deny, deny. So what that I was able to achieve decent internet streaming when I finally managed to get DSL service installed so far away from the DSL node that only 2 MBPS was possible? So what that the Netflix speed test showed 0.5 MBPS with Hughesnet when theirs showed 21 and the picture was so scrambled that I didn't know if I was watching Star Wars or 60 Minutes other than for the sound? So what that an experienced LG TV tech who came out and checked out the TV explained that in his experience you could just not use satellite internet for streaming? All of that was just fluff and not our problem type stuff when I finally cancelled Hughesnet. And by God were they ever going to stick it to me with a $300 early cancellation fee and a $600 early equipment return fee because this was all as advertised and above board, and strictly, somehow, my problem. Except that it is not, and it seems that continuous real time streaming is simply not possible with current satellite technology. And, given the number of 1 star reviews I have read that say exactly the same thing in different review forums, they have to know this and simply don't care. If they can sell the service with glib promos and slick sales pitches they will, and when a customer says enough is enough Hughesnet will take as much as they possibly can monetarily to pad their bottom line and try to make it your problem. I owned my own business (I'm a veterinarian) for many years and we almost always tried to make it right when people were unhappy, even when we had clearly practiced very good medicine and surgery. Simply to help, because that was the right thing to do. Unfortunately, many businesses, and especially large corporations, do not follow this moral compass. Because quarterly profit is all that counts, fair play and basic honesty be damned. If you do have to get satellite internet because there are no other options, and want to watch movies, it is possible to download Netflix and Amazon movies with either an app or a third party program to your Mac or PC, and then use screen sharing if your computer and TV support that. That is not ideal, but at least you get a watchable TV program or movie on your nice big Smart TV. It would be really uplifting if for once a corporation like Hughesnet looked at all of this negative stuff and the unhappiness it causes, came clean, and apologized without being forced to by some sort of glaring media exposure. Based on their responses to my Better Business Bureau complaint, that is not going to happen with Hughesnet. But if I can save even one other person the aggravation of having to deal with them, then to inform good people to stay away will at least have been worth it. read more

Absolutely horrible. HughesNet runs a monopoly on people who live off grid but now work from home Bc of the pandemic. I am paying close to 400/month, and sometimes more for the worlds most unreliable and shitty internet. They say you get 50 Megas in there highest plan available, this is a lie. You get 25 during normal hours, the other 25 are only available between 12-6am. In fact, I'm about to put a claim on you for fraud, but don't worry, you'll receive a formal notice from me first, that will be fun. 25 megas get blown through in sometimes 2 days on heavy work days. Then guess what, they CUT your internet off completely until you're forced to pay $75 for 25 more megas. They will tell you it only gets slowed down, lies as well. I have to drive into town to get cell signal just to BUY more data. To top it all off, it's so slow, it's impossible to download or stream Netflix, with out it having pixels that are half a centimeter wide, even after getting a "walk through" for how to change the settings, it did nothing. They have the ability to offer unlimited plans but they know they are making a killing off of this fraudulent set up, and those of us who live out of service are forced to comply with horrible unheard of service. When it rains, you get zero internet, can't even send one text. I've done speed tests independently and it says at best we're operating at 100 KMBS when they promise 30 MBPS (k is what we had in the 90's with dialup, to put it in perspective), but when you run the tests through their app, all of a sudden the internet speeds up to 30 and sends back a test of "excellent" so that when you call to notify them of the insanely slow speeds the representative can only see "you have excellent connectivity". But I have proof of this too that I'll be sending you shortly. What are you going to do when Tesla replaces you with actually functioning fast WiFi that is unlimited for a good price? You're going to go out of business. I personally have insider info that you're able now to launch unlimited but you are waiting till the very last minute to collect as much money as possible before then. Corrupt, and running a monopoly. It's going to be thrilling serving you. If you can at all avoid these fraudsters, do it at all costs. read more

I have been a member since 2012 and I have NEVER had a good experience with Hughes in any way - their customer service reps are rude, do not speak English well, can no offer solutions without passing and holding. I have spent at least 3 hours EVERY month since I have been a member with issues ranging from data loss (I live in the middle of absolutely no where in a canyon without any neighbors for 1/2 mile and NO one can steal my data). I have purchased tokens, been charged for them and they have NOT appeared in my token bank - I called and they argued with me saying they were added - and I checked before and after purchase - they were not added. I have had crazy data loss - I have NOTHING connected to my wireless network except for my computer which is turned off at night and I wake up in the am and there will be gigs missing. I have called and they can't explain it - they say === yes, there is no way that much data can even be used that quickly - then NOTHING - no help - zero. I decided to do a trial with a Verizon hot spot with my phone considering to drop Hughes net. I set it up so everything I did on Hughes net was also done on Verizon at the same time - I went through 16 - yes SIXTEEN gigs of data while the same period of time I lost 2 - TWO gigs of data no Verizon. I thought I was hostage by Hughes Net because I am in the country and my internet options are almost non-existent until someone told me to try a hot spot. I have used 3 gigabytes of data 12 days into my hot spot without Hughes - I would have already gone through at least 20 gigs of data during this time on HN. Also my free data on Verizon is much faster than the pay for data on Hughes net - before I dropped HN I ran out of data on Verizon just to see what I would get if I went over and I was shocked to compare speeds side by side and overage free Verizon was much faster. - I also did not want to give HN anything when I left, so I ran all of my token data out and went into HN safety browsing - and it was NO slower than my normal browsing. If you are considering signing on -think twice 0 try ANYTHING else. If you are on - try a hot spot - it will be cheaper. I threw tons of money away to the thief called Hughes net. read more

The biggest crooks in the satellite industry. OUTRIGHT THIEVES! They promised me $50.00 refund for signing up on the day I did, and then when the salesmen was finished getting my info, he told me he liked me so much, he was going to send me $100.00 instead. He said I would receive it within three weeks. He quoted me a price for my service, and said it was good for one year, and then it may go up a few bucks.I never saw the $100.00. I never even got the price he promised me. The first payment I sent them was with an electric check from my checking account. It was an agreed upon amount after me complaining that their monthly fee was $20.00 per month higher than I was quoted. The next bill came, and it was even higher. I called them and told them the amount wasn't what we agreed on, and I even gave them a confirmation number. They said they would call me back. Instead, they just took it upon themselves to take twice the amount from my checking account, and I didn't even know about it until I got my bank statement. My bank told me that since I gave them my checking account number, there was nothing they could do about it. Then, out of nowhere, they started taking money from me at will. They stole over $400.00 out of my checking account. I eventually had to go to my bank, and CLOSE MY CHECKING ACCOUNT!. That was the only way to stop them from stealing from me. I ended up having to close a bank account that I had for 20 years, because these thieving crooks were stealing my money from it. They are by far: THE WORST COMPANY, and THE BIGGEST THIEVES, I have ever had the misfortune of dealing with in my life. Rather than have them come back to my home for their equipment, I chose to climb up my roof and take it down myself, and mail the router and Sat dish back to them at my expense. I have had the service for only six days so can't offer an opinion based on long term usage. My service is Colombia, South America. Prior to Hughes I have had a local wireless provider with whom I've been very happy for the past twelve years. In recent months however he has encountered many problems with competing equipment being installed at his transfer points and my service has become hopelessly slow during high traffic hours, essentially unusable. On occasions when things are running well he delivers a little over two megas which is adequate. Hughes came to town and offers plans of 20, 30, 40 and 50 megas. I chose the 20 mega plan for about $65 US. Very pricy for hereabouts but ok. When the installers finished and set up the wifi unit I asked what is the realistic expectation? They said typically 28 megas. Wow I thought so I checked the speed using the Ookla speed test which seems to be the most common choice and holy Toledo it was pegging at 39.45 upload!!! I checked frequently over the following days and it hardly varied. However...in practice the speed with which pages would open didn't seem much different from my old service (when working well). So I got suspicious and started checking out different speed tests. There is a tester that has gotten good reviews for accuracy called SpeedOf.me. I checked Hughes' speed there and low and behold got a result of a little over five megas. That's way under 20 but better than my old server. How in the dickens does Ookla come up with 39.5??? Hughesnet is so bad that im going to waste my precious time writing a review of how awful it is. THIS ISP IS A SCAM. i have phone with them and im unable to call 911 without it cutting out and dropping the call. the average american home using 190 GB of data a month, and for fiber optic price Hughesnet will offer 10gb they lie about everything, they lie about what their services can do, the speeds. the best way to know if hughesnet is lying is if any of their employees open their mouth.. 25mbs speeds is a lie. you get 1-4mbs at most on a weekday. When the cap is gone (within a day) youre down to 100-200kbs. i cant do anything. i cant call mom, watch netflix, call 911, watch a video on how to do CPR... This service should be illegal in the year 2020. instead of launching more satellites to improve their speeds and remove caps for their over populated servers. They just release their internet to other countries to over fill the servers MORE and rake in more money while they still can before Spacelink opens their doors. This is nothing but a scam of a business that will lock you into paying $80 + a month for two years contact or make you pay out your ass to get out. We got Hughesnet because no other provider would service our apartment. The service was terrible- we could not use it on any devices at all. We ended up going over data on our phone bills because we could never use the wifi at home. We called Hughesnet numerous times to try and fix the situation. First they would ask us the same questions they asked every time we called. Then they would tell us there was nothing wrong with the internet. We convinced them to send out a technician- three days we took time off of work and no one showed up. When they finally did, the aggressive technician demanded I pay him $125 on the spot. When I called Hughesnet, they said I had to pay the amount to him. When trying to cancel my service, they require you to pay how ever many months are left in your contract. In addition, they ask you to remove the radio transmitter from the satellite to send back or you are charged $318.75. They wanted me to scale my three story building and remove the radio transmitter from my extremely steep roof- REAL SAFE. I recommend avoiding this company at all costs. If you are desperate, get a phone hot spot. They are horrendous. read more

This is absolutely the Worst service in the planet. If you want reliable high speed internet DONT USE HUGHESNET. I have Tmobile wifi calling. They promised it would work. It didnt. They gave me the run around. Kept sending me to tech support. After3 epicly long tech support calls, 3 router changes, and still no service on my phone (not even 911!)i called them to cancel. The response from hughesnet? "Sorry. Please pay $400 and we will stop your service. I know WE told you we could fix it. But since we strung you out PAST YOUR 30 DAY TRIAL in an effort to "help" you... Too bad. Pay up. Or....just keep the service and pay for something you wont use for the rest if the contract." This is horrible servivce.. Not only was I told "guarentted that I would get a min of 5MPS and 1mps upload. My bank was debited $160 without my persmission. I authoriezed a one time fee of $40 at time of set up but never authorized my acct to be auto deducted for any other charges monthly or otherwise. I even verified with sales person that this was a one time deduction and that I would be billed later.. A week into the service I decided to cancel I was informed by the manager VIctor that he was not going to give me a refund even thought they fraudulently took money from my acct he was refusing to give me a full refund. Now I am out $190 for Shitty service that I had for literaly 7 days and am getting ready to head to there legal dept. DO NOT USE THEM THEY WILL SCREW YOU OUT OF MONEY AND OFFER YOU BAD SERVICE and they have the nerve to ask you if you want an upgrade .. read more

In a word, horrible. I've been on the interwebs since the early 90s and this is the slowest "high speed" service I have ever experienced. Ever. Instead of giving you the option of just paying for exact use of their high-priced gigs they rather punish you by bringing your speed down to an absolute crawl. How evil is that? I couldn't even load their own website much less get this review online. What executive came up with that model? I'm sure it made them rich. I will gladly pay whatever termination fee to escape this horrible horrible service. I literally signed up 4 days ago and I was told that I would get 25mbps and I am not even near 0.9 mbps. I called technical support and they said because it's raining. I am new to satellite service however they should tell you about this before they lock you in to a two year contract. No one explained much about it or told me about the possibilities that I may not be able to use it for my basic business internet needs. I can not even download a PDF page without being tortured. It's a joke and sad. I will be filing a lawsuit due to negligence and misinformation. Salesperson said his mom has it and her grandson loves it and never had any issues. It's a lie! They really out to be taken off the market. Companies which flat out lie about their speed and services, should not be allowed on the market- as evidenced bu all the reviews. The previous review is right, cannot even stream netflix without watching the 25% circle go round and round... You pay them money for bad service and are stuck in a contract. To boot, once you cancel the contract, they wont even come pick up their satellite dish. I cannot imagine they are cheap, but just to tell clients to take them down themselves and throw them away? The absolute WORST service I have ever experienced. Then when you cancel within 30-days they send you a box with what to return, which does not include the radio. You think you are all done and they bill you for the radio. Contact customer service who then tells you about the radio located on the dish and send out another box. Try getting that radio from off a two story house, very difficult where they placed it. They charge you to have someone come out to pick up the radio. They threaten to report you to the credit bureau. There's more but I think you get my point! Just think seriously before having them as your provider. read more
