Current score: 5 stars Food came up in 5-ish minutes, fast, friendly - yay! Still at 5 stars Drove home smelling tacos!! Couldn't wait so I ate the al pastor taco on the 101. The salsa I ordered was left off : ( - and the meat was a little dry (maybe salsa would have helped...) Demoted to 4.5 stars Frustration made me eat the steak taco while getting on the 405. No sign of any salsa on this one either! A few pieces of inedible gristle, steak overall too chewy and a little dry (see above comment on salsa) Demoted to 4 stars Ate the carnitas taco as I was pulling into my garage. Again, devoid of salsa and flavorful but somewhat dry (repeat note on how salsa could have helped). Demoted to 3.5 stars Realized that what I really wanted - my fave - lengua, wasn't even on the menu. Even if that was a little dry, I'd likely still have loved it!! The hard shell tacos are really fricking good here. They have really good meats and REALLY GOOD salsas. Try the Chicken with Honey Chipotle Salsa or the Chorizo with the Habanero Salsa. All the combinations are really good. Three tacos with a rice and beans combo to go and you're set. It's one of my favorite taco stands in LA. Definitely more gourmet Mexican versus authentic. I stop here all the time on my way home from work coming off the 101. The line is sometimes slow and the price is a little high comparatively, but it's worth it. I come to hugo's tacos all of the time and I usually always get the carne asada tacos because they are delicious but today I actually took a look at the menu and was surprised that they have hamburgers too. I wanted to try one since I know that the tacos are good. I usually do not like burgers too much but this one was good. I was just looking for somewhere to grab a quick bite on the run, and this little joint came up on the phone. Easy to locate, small parking lot, barely managed to wedge my car in at the end. Upon first glance at menu, I was pleasantly surprised to see they had some vegetarian/pescetarian options! The grilled fish taco sounded great, but decided to go with a Soy Chorizo crunchy taco and a Mixed Veggies crunchy taco. The order came up pretty quick, headed to car and got back on the road. It wasn't until I was already on the freeway that I realized that they gave me 2 Mixed Veggies tacos (no Soy Chorizo). Bummer, I really wanted to try that! The Mixed Veggies consisted of corn, potatoes, onions and zucchini I think... topped with pico de gallo. Nice crispy taco shells - that was the best part. Why is the line always long at this place?!? I finally tried it and found out it is a white version of Mexican food. The worst meat was the al pastor...it was like a chopped up dry pork chop. I normally get al pastor because the pork is so juicy and flavorful! Not at Hugo's!! Maybe that's how White people like them?!? (sorry, no offense meant. With all respect, I am an authority on burrito (taco) joints. I know which ones are crappy, mediocre or excellent. I am able to recognize immediately if a place is worth hitting again. Hugo's is unique in that it offers organic ingredients (for example the white beans and the tortillas), yet it is an authentic type burrito joint. To the person who does not believe the white beans are good, fine, they are entitled to an opinion. But they're wrong. The white beans are tasty and kick ass. The rice in my burrito was a little al dente for me, but flavourful. It did not detract from the burrito. The salsa is nice. You get a choice between 5 salsas ranging in heat. The burritos are not enormous for $5.50, true. Ideally, I would have eaten a burrito and a taco, but it was 10:00 at night when I stopped by there and I am trying to lose weight. The first couple of times I came here I thought the food was just alright. I used to 2 blocks away though, which gave me a good excuse to keep giving them a try and then it hit...The carnitas tacos with the honey chipotle salsa are where it's at. From that point on there was nothing else I ordered here. They became a regular thing for lunch and often when I'd go out of town. They make great travel tacos to bring to the airport rather than suffer through your often limited and poor options. Their horchatas are great too. There is almost always a line here. Hugo's tacos is simply the Hugo's restaurant chain's take on bastardized Mexican food. For all the authentic purists that decry this as such an abomination to everything good in this world, just take a deep breath, and enjoy a horchata.(they're awesome) Burritos as you know them are not exactly authentic Mexican fare either, but does that make them not delicious? Hugo's does it's part for the proliferation of Mexican themed cuisine and brings it to the valley people who may otherwise be stuck buying "Mexi-melts" to feed their hunger. So I was driving around one day, and I noticed this random, small taco stand called Hugo's Tacos right by the entrance to the 101 freeway on Coldwater Canyon, and I kinda chuckled under my breath. Then I noticed the massive line that had formed in order to order food, and I was quite intrigued. A few days later, my brother was in town, and the idea just popped into my head... "Hey Alex... whadya say we go and try some of them Hugo's Tacos?" and he was all for it (after chuckling under his breath), and off we were, speeding down the 101 to find out what this new craze was all about. After about 15 minutes in line, we finally ordered some tacos. And soon enough, we were eating. Now, I can't say that the tacos were bad, because they weren't. They were fresh, they weren't salty, and the meat was actually really good. The downside though... the tacos were just the tortilla and meat. Nothing else... no greens, no cheese, nothing. Best tacos in the area. Great when you are on the go or want to get a meal quickly. My favorite is the chicken taco with honey chipotle salsa. Also love the frozen mango drink. The tacos are small so I always order the 3 tacos for $6.50. Not the best atmosphere- right next to the freeway on-ramp and on a really busy street, however- there is a parking lot. Some seating on the side of the little building, but usually is messy and the tables are not frequently cleaned so I am always careful about sitting in salsa. read more

I'll start with the good stuff-- The salsas are so yummy, especially the honey chipotle -just the right amount of sweet with a touch of heat. The habenero is a truly delicious hot sauce, with a smooth texture that is great for dipping with chips. The aguas frescas are also sublime, I always get the watermelon when they have it. The food, beyond that, is only ok. I find that every time I go, at least 15 times in the last 5 years, the beans are undercooked. Does anyone like al dente frijoles? Not me! Today I got the carnitas burrito with honey chipotle salsa. At first bite I was so pleased--just delicious! But there was only salsa on that one end of the burrito, and throughout there were three giant hunks of fatty/unedible meat, so gross. Last, let's discuss the price. Now, I know this place prides itself on featuring fresh foods and plenty of options for vegans and vegetarians, so I expect the price to be higher than your average taco stand. Hugo's tacos is great for the mere fact that it is a taco stand that has some delicious Vegan food! The burrito with soy-chorizo, potatoes, rice, beans and salsa is probably one of the best vegan burritos you are going to get in LA. Get a side of guacamole and put that on said burrito and you have a truly yummy and super filling meal. Their Vegan taco salad is pretty great too...just ask for some extra dressing on the side. Another one of those over-rated, you-absolutely-have-to-eat-there places that fail to live up to its inflated reputation. Everyone rants and raves about this little taco stand by the side of a highway as if Mexican food was invented there. It wasn't. I ordered the sweet corn and spinach tamales with honey chipotle salsa and sour cream. I was given a number. 49. Then I waited. My friend was number 48. His order came. Then I waited for mine. When they called number 54, and my friend had already finished eating (while standing next to me on line!) a guy popped his head out of the window and asked if I had placed an order. When I said "Yes, number 49," he disappeared back inside. Then I waited. He reappeared and asked what the order was. I repeated my order, which apparently had not been processed by the couldn't-care-less teenager who took the order at the first window. After a few more minutes, the second guy handed me a greasy box containing the tamales which looked as if they had been hurriedly slapped together. There was no sour cream. When I asked the couldn't-care-less teenager for the sour cream on the side, he said "That'll be fifty cents." So, after not processing my order, keeping me waiting for about twenty minutes, and then getting the order wrong, he expected me to pay an additional fee for the missing item! I smiled politely and walked away. I will not be going back. As for the tamales, they were nothing to write home about. The menu is great and food is delicious from fresh ingredients. Vegan options a plenty and all super yummy. Buuuuut.... If they're busy, which they almost always are around regular meal hours/weekends, they DO NOT pay attention. The staff is very cordial and always correct their mistakes but if there's a line and you want your food quickly and made correctly the first time, go somewhere else. \$30 for 5 tacos and 3 horshota/ I was at this place today with my dad, my sister and I and tried their tacos for the 2nd time there. The first time was a better experience. But they may have change the menu or something. I asked them for soft tacos with chicken and mixed veggies and all they put in was veggies and no chicken at all. We got 5 tacos at $3 each for a small taco. Plus 3 drinks wich made it a $25 dinner. The tacos didn't taste good at all. It needed chicken. We had to go to the front again to buy the chicken. That then made it a $30 dinner for my sister, my dad, and I. We added the chicken and it still didn't taste good. It was too expensive just for 5 tacos and 3 drinks. If your getting soft tacos or any tacos, I would recommend coming with big bucks. read more

This is so far my favorite taco place in the Valley (and maybe all of LA!) I love how you can mix and match the salsa types with the tacos. Everything has really great seasoning and tastes really fresh. I also think their chips are the best. My FAVORITE thing about this restaurant is how all of the gluten free and vegan options are clearly labeled on the menu. Very helpful! I got a hugely overpriced and totally bland breakfast Burrito. I paid $5.25 for this hunk of junk. It was stuffed with unseasoned beans and rice as filler. Could barely detect any other ingredient except a little bit of scrambled egg. Couldn't taste the cheese, cilantro, sauce of any type and it contained no potato. I asked if I could get some potato in mine, yet the order taker said only if I paid an additional $2.50! I asked if I could substitute it for the rice and beans, she said no. Service was fast, place was cool. Meal was uggh! Among the worst I ever had! I'd prefer a smaller more tasty traditional Mexican breakfast burrito. Truly I've gotten more flavorful Mexican burritos from McDonald's for 1/2 the price. No Lie. The 2nd star is only for the nice ambiance of the stand. After passing by Hugo's Taco on numerous occasions I finally decided I would try this today and I'm glad I did. As others previously mentioned I choose the 3 tacos for $5.75 (+tax) and had in my mind I was going to have chicken and steak. But once you see the menu you'll notice there are six filling choices along with seven salsas. Decisions, decisions... So I tried this combo: 1. chicken with jalapeno & tomatillo salsa 2. chicken with salsa habanero 3. soy chorizo, potato, zucchini with honey chiplotle Choice one was ok, the salsa was very mild. Choice two the salsa was hot, and I had to blow my nose (which is rare for me). I think I got my sense of taste back about an hour later. If I were you I would eat the other taco combinations first and save this one for last. The chicken was tender in both but they really loaded up on the onions. Choice three was my favorite, sweet but just enough spice. So just when you think you got your filling/salsa combination down they ask you "would you like the taco shell soft or hard?" So be prepared. If you are really hungry I would add the rice and beans to your plate because these are small tacos. The staff was courteous. Might be the wost taco I've ever had in my life. And my attitude towards tacos is kinda like my attitude towards pizza... even when it's bad, its good. Not in this case. i couldn't even finish my taco. The steak just tasted weird... it was like sweet and tangy (great if that's what you're expecting awful if you want an authentic-ish taco). The salsa verde was not just "not-spicy" but it too tasted kind of sweet and just plain weird. And finally... the price is pretty high. I had two tacos, with their chips and soda combo. Cost me like $10. That's not cool, I could pay that same price at like a sit down place like El Torito or Acapulco or something... idk. The only good things were that the employees were nice, and the outdoor seating had heaters. Other people were having chicken and fish, they seemed to enjoy their food. Wow, what a great find! When somebody approached me to go to Hugo's Tacos for lunch, my first initial reaction was to check it out online and after I saw they have vegetarian choices I was in. And what a great surprise it was indeed! Who cares if it's not real Mexican food! I want options and I want it now! So here it goes: veggie fillings of corn , string beans and zucchini, and soy chorizo, potato and zucchini! Are you kidding me? No, here goes some more: veggie burger and vegan dressing on vegan salad! What more can you ask for, when in the land of fast food and Mexican taco stands, this is a great simple concept, combined with organic and fresh ingredients without the usual fried greasy and cheesy rice and beans deal. I am really impressed with variety on the menu, cheap prices, and satisfied with a perfectly portioned breakfast burito with soy chorizo, potato and zucchini. Yum! And yes, the salsa could be more generous, but if you ask for more than one container, trust me, they will give it to you. So far the honey chipotle is the winner. Fresh. Tasty. Filling. Relatively inexpensive - definitely cheaper than the mothership (Hugo's Restaurant, catty-corner to the satellite taco stand). Convenient...if you live across the street like me. Tons of options. I mean, five different fillings for your burrito? Six different types of salsa? Three aguas frescas?? I could eat here every day for a month and still leave a few combinations untried. In the summertime, they even have a mist-spraying hose running along the overhang! Hugo's closes at 10 p.m. I got there the other night at 9:57 p.m. They refused to serve me. If you want to close at 9:57, your hours should be until 9:57. This really upset me because hugo's is a nice little taco stand. The people are usually friendly and the food is mostly good. This really tainted my enjoyment of Hugo's, though to be honest, it's nothing to freak out about. It's nothing to freak out about, though, and rush your friends to when they're in town.
