I am a little bias on this review because this place remind me of my home town back in Oahu Hawaii. The best way to describe this place is like putting a poke house combine with LL into one. The place give you a very Aloha spirit and everyone always greet you with the Kamaaina way from Hawaii. 1) Food: From Traditional Poke to kaulua pig is a very ono ( great or #1) taste... not to mention the island drinks. ( this place have a full bar) 2) Quality: Very tasty and feel like home made cooking. Staff is friendly, but clearly the owners might have lost hope in the location. There simply is no excuse for the way it looks inside. Broken down fridge/freezer with boxes piled high to the ceiling in the lobby. The bathrooms are dark and gloomy. You can tell the place does not get any upkeep. These types of issues would take a very small amount of money to resolve, but it seems there is no drive to do that. We won't be back which sucks as it could be a great place. I grew up in San Jose and my roots are in Hawaii, so when I come up this way, I make it a point to stop by and say, "Howzit!" I met one of my nieces here since she was in town too. We just sat at the bar and had drinks and I made a big old pig outta myself and got a kahlua pork quesadilla....very good! A large plate of portagee sausage and of course, a spam musubi. When the SIP or Shelter In Place took place because of the Covid-19 virus...the world stood still...and so was my Yelp reviews. So today, I need to keep my Yelp review going. I apologize for not doing it last month as that's when it's started and I am an essential worker and I was busy, well our whole department that is... which is the Santa Clara County Public Health Department..we're trending as we speak. I am reviewing Hukilau because it's one of the most popular meal among my fellow PH employees. We have been ordering our food for the whole PH Ops (I don't think ordering food is CLASSIFIED) to local restaurants around SJ but I have noticed that Hukilau have been in our lunch menu more than once or even more than twice! We ordered individual meal choice of beef teriyaki, chicken teriyaki, chicken katsu, and vegetarian with macaroni salad, rice, and noodles. I had at one time the chicken teriyaki (during the Holy Week) and yesterday I had the beef teriyaki. They were both very good but i preferred the chicken teriyaki. The Hukilau's macaroni salad is one of the best tasting macaroni salad I've ever had. The portion of the lunch meal is very generous! The delivery service is on time! Wonderful Hawaiian restaurant in San Jose's Japan Town. We had a large group of us come in for dinner and the host ordered a variety of food. Spam musubi, chicken wings, Katsu, ramen, beef and chicken teriyaki and pork quesadillas. My favorites were the Katsu which was super crispy and moist, the quesadilla was a delicious twist with the Hawaiian pork and the ramen was so tasty. The noodles were cooked perfectly and it was mixed with so many yummy meats and veggies. We ended the meal with a brownie sundae which was so delicious. The owner mentioned he gets the brownies flown in from the big island each week! Now that we know about this place, this will certainly be our go to if we want Hawaiian fusion food. Can't believe I've never written a review for Hukilau! I've been coming here for years. I've been here a few times when they have live music in the back, which is so awesome! The options are pretty limited for a vegetarian, but luckily they have some pretty good seafood options. I always get the mahi mahi sandwich. I love the papaya dressing that comes on the salad. Drinks here are good (made pretty strong, too!). I do wish they had some crazy drinks like other Hawaiian places have (pina coladas in pineapples, etc...) Sometimes I have great experiences here, and others I have pretty bad experiences, which is why I'm only giving them the 3 stars. Yes it is a heavy meal, but the flavor was there. It is also still pretty good as far as left overs. This is because the portions are pretty large. Th4 beef teriyaki was interesting. They decided to go with thinly sliced beef that was marinated and cooked. I expected it to be dry, but it was not. To my surprise, I liked it. We stop by this place during the Nikkei Matsui festival in japantown and there was a long wait but we knew we wanted to try the vegetarian options here so we waited to 35 to 45 minutes to get our seat. The veggie fried rice was pretty standard, the veggie Saimin was a little salty and I can't remember how authentic it is because I haven't had saimin in a few years, the veggie poke bowl was very nice and actually inspired me to make my own Poké bowl for my daughters lunches afterwards. I wouldn't say that the vegetarian food here it was amazing but that there were vegetarian options here was amazing so a great place to go with your meeting friends. The chicken was served on pasta which was unusual but a yummy choice because it absorbed all the sauce. The lomi lomi salmon was good but the salmon should be salt cured. We were in Santa Cruz for the weekend and wanted to try something that's not common in the South Bay. There are a few Hawaiian food places, but Hukilau seemed a little different compared to other Hawaiian restaurants. The places in the South Bay are more like L&L and not so much a restaurant, so we thought Hukilau would be an interesting comparison. We actually walked from our hotel which was a few blocks away, but if we wanted to drive and park, there's definitely parking available. There are a couple of parking lots and a garage, but they all have their fees. Before we actually left the hotel, I thought it would be a good idea to check on Yelp to see if they had the Yelp Waitlist option and fortunately they did. When we put our name on the Yelp Waitlist, it said that we were 6th in line and there was a 20-25min wait (at the time we added our name to the list). The walk was about 20ish minutes and when we got there, we saw there were a few people actually already waiting outside. We went up to the podium to check in and they said even AFTER we checked in, there was another 20min wait. I thought it was kind of odd that there was an additional wait even after being put on the list. Isn't that what the Yelp Waitlist is for? To reduce your wait time when arriving at the restaurant? We ended up walking around downtown while we waited to receive the notification that our table was ready. Once we got the notification, we checked back in with the podium and we were seated. Our order was taken right away and our server was very nice. We both ordered the Galbi since that's what we were in the mood to eat. There were a lot of other options, including a lot of appetizers, but the food was already a little pricey. We actually got there during Happy Hour which was probably why there were so many people. One thing I noticed was that the "Happy Hour" appetizer menu was the exact same price as the regular appetizer menu. Isn't Happy Hour drinks and apps supposed to be cheaper? Pretty sure that's not just a Bay Area thing. Our food came out pretty quick! We really liked that our Galbi came with a dipping sauce (which pretty much was the sauce that the Galbi was cooked with). But I think our expectations were a little too high. The rice was pretty overcooked, very mushy. It was almost like it was the instant rice that you microwave. I think the worst was the macaroni salad. This tasted NOTHING like Hawaiian macaroni salad. If anything, it just tasted like potato salad with macaroni! It was very disappointing. The meat was great but the rice and macaroni salad was not good. When I packed our leftovers, I actually just packed the meat and not either of the sides. Forgot to mention that our food (2 Galbi plates and 2 waters) was $50. We probably won't be returning. We came at peak lunch time around 12:30pm and had to drive through a few streets till we found a few spaces in front of an apartment complex. The restaurant has a full bar and a few tables at the front, looked like they had more through a back corridor. They have specials for everyday. We came on a Thursday and the special was food and drinks discounted on a select list from I think 10am-2pm for lunch. What we got: Garlic Fries- People aren't kidding when they say the garlic fries are SUPER garlic-y here. If you really like garlic like I do, these garlic fries are 100% worth getting. They look moist with garlic oil or something but they're actually crunchy. Spam Masubi- They look more like spam sushi then your typical spam masubi. The spam itself wasn't cooked too long, I'm a fan of crisped spam. There also wasn't any sauce that I tasted. Overall, I could make way better spam masubi myself. Big Bruhhdah Combo- (sorry if that's misspelled) For our two selections we got the up-charge loco moco and the teriyaki short rib. The loco moco came with these noodles that were kind of tasteless and just extra carbs. The loco moco itself was delicious and exactly what you would expect. The teriyaki short rib, however, was the better of the two. A little on the salty side but nonetheless delicious and cooked very tender. I tried to cut all the meat off the bones that I could. Overall, was pretty good food. I would definitely come back to try some of their cocktails and other dishes. I would have liked a little more mac salad and would have ordered a side of it, but hadn't expected it to be so good. As I was staying in a hotel I had to order flatware and a drink. The flatware is wrapped in-house so if you are obsessive about that kinda thing just be aware. Also, they were out of most of the canned beverages. Located in the japan town in San Jose, expect street parking or parking in the lot. If you do street parking have coins on you because the meters don't take credit card! One good thing about this place is that the food comes out really fast. I think my boyfriend and I ordered our lunch and then less than 5 minutes later our dish came out. The service here is pretty good where they take your order, ask how the food is, and if there is anything they can do for you. The place itself is clean and tidy. The food here I would have to say is okay. We ordered a spam musubi as an appetizer and that dish itself was okay. The spam wasn't hot, the rice here and there was stale and it was literally one musubi cut in a diagonal half. I ordered the poke bowl with ahi tuna and salmon. The rice itself was plain and the tuna and salmon tasted okay. The only complaint I would have to say is that they put way to much onions in there that the onion overpowered the taste and left a strange after taste in my mouth. My boyfriend ordered the loco moco and that dish was good. What made the dish really good was the pulled pork, just melted in your mouth. I dont really like writing bad reviews. But let's see by memory how bad it gets. Haha. Okay so my cousin warned me about coming here. Haha but I never really think too much of it. I just moved on in on my own with Simone to have the expectancy of having a nice lunch. When you first walk in it looked pretty nice. Reminded me of those shacks in North Shore on Oahu, Hawaii when you walk into a mom and pop store. Im from Hawaii by the way and it sort of felt like a familiar place. We had a nice table and the wait ress was nice. Typical table, greeted with menus and two glasses of water with ice. The menus were nicely professional. I ordered a basic local style dish from Hawaii Chicken Katsu and Simone wanted to try out their Hukilau Sesame Chicken. Mind you that Simone chose this dish because since the restaurant called it HUKILAU....the dish was also called HUKILAU. She assumed it was going to be their best. We first started with mix POKE with ahi and tako. Ahi a type of fish and tako is octopus. Both are our favorite proteins when we eat authentic poke from Hawaii. We eat this stuff all our lives so we are pretty aware of what makes it good. In my opinion, it seemed like they created the sauce part with Aloha Shoyu which is the popular soy sauce in Hawaii. But I know....that its not the kind of soy sauce you use to make POKE. Haha. The best Poke are always made with Kikkoman. Also Hukilau's version does not have Sesame Oil. (Which explains the dish Simone ordered). We were able to finish the Poke by Hukilau, but it did not taste authentic. SImone ordered the Hukilau Sesame Chicken. Haha. Yes Im giggling because with my eyes only...the sauce that was tossed around the chicken looked RED. It looked like buffalo wings sauce. It layed out in a linguine style pasta with two scoops of rice and a macaroni salad. Simone was disappointed and complained that it did not taste like sesame at all. So I read the menu again, "Tender morsals of chicken thighs lightly battered and tossed in our special teriyaki sauce with sesame seeds." Thats strange. Simone said it almost tasted like Buffalo Wings. Now I had the Chicken Katsu. This is a basic simple dish that is pretty popular in Hawaii. I figured if they can pull this off, will the rest of their menu be worth trying? The Katsu turned out as it suppose to. I have a strange feeling that the chicken WAS a frozen chicken. With saying that, dont misinterpret. It was served hot and warm but the texture of the chicken was cooked and slightly soggy. Which can only mean one thing. The chicken was frozen. People are not this picky but it was my observation as I am always on the lookout on how much effort they plan or prep their foods. The Macaroni Salad is also a typical basic side dish that is popular back in Hawaii and if you dont make it right...it throws off the entire meal. Hukilau's version had a strange after taste. I could not put my finger on it. It was between sulfur and pineapple. Sulfur like eating Durian but it was light. Im not sure what is in their refrigerator, but I can only assume that something is contaminating the macaroni salad in their refrigerator. Possibly a rotten fruit or their fridge is Dirty. I dont know. The Mac Salad just did not taste right. I have to say...it doesnt seem like they took pride in their foods. Because if they did, they would at least find the real recipes of Hawaii. I know that each restaurant has to give their own spin, but the after taste of sulfur and the aloha shoyu in the poke......does not give me a pass. Macaroni Salad is so BASIC. They couldnt even do it. It seemed like their BAR was a lot more beautiful. It could be they take more pride in their BAR SERVICE more than their business of restaurant service. Because they do have a beautiful looking bar. Which probably makes sense since Bars do make a lot of money. They are not in the careful business for the palettes of people like me who crave for local foods from Hawaii. read more

This place is ok. I haven't been here in years, but came for a pre Mother's Day dinner. I got the Luau Plate which sounded great, but it looked way better than it tasted. I felt like everything was missing something. The plate comes with kalua pork, lau lau, lomi lomi salmon, rice and mac salad. - The two small scoops of rice is not enough for all the amount of food on the plate. Mac salad was just ok. All mini scoops. - Lomi lomi salmon was all tomato except 6 pieces of salmon. I shouldn't even say "pieces" as it was actually bits. Smh. -Kalua pork wasn't served with cabbage. That was weird. I felt like it needed some salt and liquid smoke or something. Lacking. -Lau lau needed salt and was also lacking the richness of the dish. Came here for a birthday occasion and ordered the Poke bowl with salmon and avocado. It was very fresh and and marinated deliciously. I also loved the fried shrimp and mahi mahi. The batter for the fried food is so good, like a golden flakey and light panko crust. I am only knocking a star because I wasn't fond of their cocktails. I ordered the Mai Tai and my husband had one of their specialty cocktails (I can't remember the name) but they were both way too sweet. If you're getting drinks I'd stick to your basic wells. read more
