I am from Hawaii and I must say Hula Wok did not disappoint. Food (4/5) The food did not wow me, but it was great food (to the point where I drove 25 minutes out of my way to get lunch here). I was having mad Hawaiian food cravings and reviews for this place looked good. This place is Cantonese Hawaiian, meaning this individual restaurant has a Cantonese twist to its food. Which is honestly what I love about what makes up Hawaiian food, it is just a fusion of multiple cultural cuisines. They have the typical Hawaiian BBQ stuff such as chicken katsu, bbq plates and spam musubi; while still differentiating themselves by selling some more Chinese inspired dishes and even surprising me with malasadas which I never get outside of Hawaii. The malasadas were just as good as I remembered. They were light, sweet and crispy. Definitely a must order at Hula Wok. I got the BBQ plate without any rice, but a side order of macaroni and boy was it good. The meats were flavorful and tender. Nothing was charred or overcooked and the mac salad was pretty decent! Location & Atmosphere (4/5) This place is not somewhere that you would really travel for, but for people who live in the San Ramon area, this place is definitely a go to spot whenever you are craving something cheap and yummy. It is located in a big plaza with lots of other selections and grocery stores, so there is an abundance of parking. What was funny is that they were playing Hawaiian music the whole time we were there which really gave off that small Hawaiian Vibe. Restaurant was clean, as was the bathroom but lighting was dim. Service (5/5) People were friendly, the cashier gave recommendations and even brought our food over to our table instead of calling our number and making us pick it up. Customer service is fast- we usually call our order in and it's ready to go! I've ordered in person as well and wait time was about 15 minutes so don't expect a long wait. We've never actually eaten at Hula Wok but it's pretty clean from what I've seen. The prices and offerings are pretty standard for other Hawaiian bbq places I've been to. Their chicken katsu plate is very good and they have a slight spice to their katsu sauce that I have never had before. It's very good and unexpected! I've also ordered their spam musubi which is fine. I wish they cooked the spam musubi a little more thoroughly and consistently. I feel like every time I get it, it's prepared differently so I don't know if that's dependent of the cook but I would suggest they get on the same page about how to prepare it. read more

I've been coming to this restaurant for about 4 years (check out my initial review!) and like other Yelpers, I've noticed the overall quality of its food has decreased drastically. My husband went to pick some up today and the chicken was just plain gross. The food used to be so amazing, it has some unique flavors other Hawaiian restaurants do not have. The sesame chicken and lemon chicken in particular were so soft and perfectly cooked, the sauces were some of the best I had ever tasted. Now all the plates I've ordered the last couple of months have been tasteless, super chewy, and dry with very limited sauce. To top it off, they are no longer offering macaroni in the combination plates! That was a signature for the dish with the rice and protein. Pretty typical Hawaiian plate lunch place. I thought it a bit pricey but they do give you good portions so it probably comes out as fairly priced. Don't like all the styrofoam but it is a Hawaiian plate lunch place and the styrofoam boxes are standard. I'm not going to knock them for it. I found the food pretty underwhelming, but this isn't the type of food I get enthusiastic over (too much rice, don't like macaroni salad, and I don't eat much meat). I think the food was fine for what it was. I ordered the healthy garlic shrimp plate which came with a side salad and brown rice. The brown rice was plain and boring (as was my husband's white rice - he forgot to get brown). They do charge extra for brown rice unless it specifically comes with the dish (mine did). $1.50 extra. So be aware of that. The salad was basically iceberg lettuce. Shrimp were tasty though. Very garlicky and large. Only issue was that they weren't always completely deveined (they left the bottom half of the shells on for flavor). Kids shared a mixed BBQ meal, which was a lot of food for them. Two meals for two kids. Like I said above, good portions. The meat was flavorful although I noticed that the chicken had a lot of skin on it (and it was thick too -weird) and the beef had quite a bit of gristle. But they did provide good portions. My daughter didn't care for the gristly beef but my son loved it. There aren't many vegetarian options so my husband ordered off the Chinese menu. He was able to swap in tofu in the Kung Pao chicken. It was pretty good (nice and spicy which isn't always the case with this dish). We probably won't be back, but if you like Hawaiian food you probably will like this place. read more

I have eaten at other Hawaiian/chinese places before that basically look like the owners got tired of paying L&L franchise fees and decided to do it on their own. This place tasted like L&L (which I love) but isn't a conversion like the other place I mentioned. I had a half/half bbq (beef and ribs), mini Katsu and a lau lau/klaus pork plate. They all tasted fairly similar to L&L. My wife said that the ribs were not as good. I will be going to Hula Wok instead of L&L from now on. read more

I give this place five stars because most Hawaiian fast food places I have been to are not very good. So in their category they are quite good. Chicken Katsu was nice and crispy, both the beef and beef short rib were marinated well prepared to order. (I hate places with steam tables). Kalua pork was tender but not much flavor, would not order that again. Might try half Chinese and half Hawaiian option they offer next time. I would come back. I just wish they had a fried rice option or lunches fried rice, and some sort of pickled vegetable. Very Good portions on the combos - you can't go wrong if your hungry. Second time back in two days. You can order half Chinese half Hawaiian and get fried rice or noodles for a dollar up charge. I love this place. OMG the Chinese Chow Mein is amazing! Great flavor and thin noodles! I was dragged to this place yesterday after being told it was the best chicken katsu in the area... The space itself is a bit odd. It's got a to-go vibe with some tables like every other hawaiian BBQ place but their menu isn't on the wall and is laminated which gives it a more sit down vibe. There are also tons of variations of the same item. I was here for chicken katsu and what I found was that I could have a mini or regular of some healthy chicken katsu (brown rice and salad), a normal plate with white rice and salad, a bowl which I ordered with rice and steamed veggies and I'm sure there were more but I stopped reading at that point. Minus 1 star for a mushy tomato I stole from my friend who hates tomatoes. It was 100% up until I decided to eat that. I'm also not sure what it is about not having a menu on the board that's throwing me off but the employees were super friendly and the katsu was good. I'm sure I'll be back again. read more

In the days prior to the banquet I came in a few times and called in regards to making sure I ordered enough food. Spoke to the same lady every time. Today, I came in to finalize and pay. The prices changed. The website displays a price and she was telling me it would cost $10-15 more on some trays. She informed me there are websites out there that show different prices and I should look on THEIR website for the most current prices. She gave me the QR code to scan. I scanned it. Their own website displayed the same price, NOT $10-15 more. But she would not budge. She called the owner/manager and she told me that the manager said if I can order on their website then they would grant the price. As I was ordering the price was changing on their website. Bad business. U lost out on a HUGE banquet order just so u could TRY and charge me few $100 more. San Ramon is closer but not worth it. I ordered from Hawaiian Grill Express in Dublin. **This review is related to my visit pre-COVID/quarantine back in early February 2020.** I was excited to try this place out after seeing the positive reviews, which only further increased my craving since it had been awhile since I had hawaiian food. (Mind you, I'm no expert in hawaiian cuisine -- I just like food that tastes good, hah.) Since I was a little unfamiliar with the menu, I just asked the employee behind the counter what they recommended, and she suggested the BBQ Mix Plate, which includes BBQ chicken, short ribs, and beef. It seems like a lot, so I'm not sure whether I was just really hungry or the food was just really hitting the spot but I ended up finishing the whole thing in one sitting. (Probably a little of both, but I do want to give credit.. the food was tasty.) The meat paired with the macaroni salad (such a nostalgic entree to me for some reason) and rice just really satisfied my appetite. Overall, it was a great spot to grab lunch in and out pretty quickly, and I like that they had an area by the cashier where we could pour ourselves some sauces to-go. I recognize the convenience in giving everyone a to-go styrofoam container regardless of whether or not they actually eat at the restaurant, but the environmentally conscious consumer in me does wish they would serve people that actually eat AT the restaurant plastic or ceramic plates and metal utensils. read more

But I have to say walking in and being greeted with a smile and handed a menu was very nice, yes hellos and welcomes are great but sometimes they can be overwhelming, in my opinion. Hula Wok BBQ is a huge hit for catering for parties. Their chicken katsu is absolutely delicious, I was worried that It would be soggy by the time we got It and had to re- heat It but It was fine and still very crunchy. I would not recommend their teriyaki beef for catering as It was not tender enough, I think teriyaki chicken would've been better. However, they are on the priced side as It was about $200 for 2 small trays and 2 medium trays. The only down side is that I came here to order a week in advance and they were not ready for my order by 5:15 pm and told me I placed my order for 5:45 pm. They made It right there though so I knew It was fresh which was fine, just a longer wait. read more

This is similar to other Hawaiian themed places for casual, quick Asian food that is found all over the Hawaiian islands. Their menu is not very different from the L&L Drive In chain. I think the quality is a bit better and the servings are larger. So, think of it as a decent rice plate or noodle house with Korean Short Ribs (BBQ beef ribs) and Bulgogi (BBQ boneless beef). I usually get the BBQ Mixed Plate (BBQ chicken, bbq beef and short ribs). It comes with 2 scoops of white rice and 1 scoop macaroni salad (typical Hawaiian format). The meat is nicely grilled with good flavor and texture and generous portion. I usually eat about half of it and take the rest home for another meal. At $10.45, it's a really good value. All the dishes are moderately priced. The service is quick and friendly. Your place your order and pay for it at the counter and they deliver it to your table. The ambiance is very utilitarian but it's open, bright and clean. All dishes are served in a white Styrofoam clam shell. But, I wish they had the traditional sauces common in Hawaiian and Korean places. I miss the dark, spicy Korean sauce. All they have is soy sauce and the standard spicy, red/garlic/chili Sriracha Sauce. I sometimes bring my own Korean hot sauce. If they had it or put it on the finished dish, I would consider moving it u to 4-star. Jim read more

Chicken masubi is wonderful and I normally buy a lot. You would think that they would freely include the katsu sauce but I have to ask every time. Every place you go to get fried chicken, the sauce comes free with the food. If you want extra sauce, then extra charge. But at least one sauce per masubi you order should be free. Your stinginess on one stinky sauce makes us not want to go patronize your business anymore. read more
