Place is dope with good vibes, good drinks, and awesome dance floor. Cover charge is usally for the dance floor because they have life performances. But with that, this place's rating depends on the performers. Its sort of a hit or miss. Was here the first time because I was invited by the band Flobots. When I first met them, I did not know who they were but they were very welcoming. They are a great band and relay some strong inspiring messages in their songs. Their crew is awesome. HumBrews (as it's known locally) is an interesting place that has something of a split personality. On the one side it's essentially a sports bar. They have a good selection of beer, and a pretty solid line up of food items to order. I like the wings, as well as the buffalo chicken wrap. Sweet potato fries for the win. Pool table in the front, usually pretty crowded. The other side of HumBrews is a big dance floor which has a few different parties thrown in it. Soul Night is a good time. There's a bar in the dance area, along with a raised seating area in the back. Thankfully you don't have to go out to use the bathrooms either, since they have a set on that side. read more

We came for a show on St. Patty's day. Beer selection is excellent. Bartender inside the restaurant was not good. Made me a terrible old fashioned (before they were busy, so he had time to muddle the sugar so it wouldn't be gritty). He was overwhelmed and unfriendly. Bartender inside at the show was friendly and handled himself like a pro. The venue has a good set-up with tables on a riser area in the back. Sound is good and the band we saw was incredible! Kind of a noisy pub with decent grub and a nice selection of beer. While it's not officially a sports bar, all that's missing are some slightly larger TVs. What I liked: +Fast, friendly service, even though things were pretty busy right after graduation at nearby Humboldt State. +Good beer selection. You can try most any local beer here, plus many more crafts and domestics alike. +They host great events all week long. +Arcata is pretty small, so this is a great gathering spot for locals and visitors alike. What I didn't like: +The space is decent, but the atmosphere felt a little worn out and the lighting made it feel dingy. +When it's crowded, it gets loud! +Not enough vegan/vegetarian options on the menu. Come on, this is Humboldt County. Restaurants in Nebraska (where I'm from) are doing a better job offering veg options these days. Overall, a nice spot to enjoy some drinks in Arcata. read more

So I went into this bar with my two friends and I had the most amazing bartender aj who was super sweet this other woman who was super fucking rude her name was Lauren and she was literally so mean to the point where I have never experienced such bad customer service I'm my entire life. The more I we've gone here the more disappointed I feel. The service is always a little rude or slow or both. They seem to get especially annoyed with large groups- I get it can be overwhelming when there is a group of 10 hi hey adults. But the group I was with is friendly and tips well when the service deserves it. However, Humbrews was only willing to split the check 3 ways and the staff was just pretty rude throughout the evening. At the end of the night the automatic gratuity on the one check (because they weren't willing to split it) was $47. We didn't add anything additional because she was rude about it, but I guarantee you that is she had been a little more polite and a little more willing to divide up the check, she could have made twice that from the group I was with. read more

Ordered wings and burgers for the fam & squad and everyone enjoyed their food. Onion rings were better than anticipated and wished we'd ordered more. Tried a local hibiscus cider and it was just okay, a bit dry. The other side of this place houses a live music stage, good sized floor area with a sound & light booth. The music that night didn't appeal to the group so we dipped out. All in all, seemed like a decent joint for Arcata, we'll return if our daughter chooses Humboldt as her college. read more

Came here to watch football and have some snacks, wait staff isn't very attentive, more concerned with socializing with each other and people seated at the bar. Had to flag someone down to order a beer and some food. Tried to order the garlic cheese fries as they sounded really good but they were out of shredded cheese, went with the fried pickles but the spear a were very large and the breading just fell off. We came here before in the summer and it was really good, but really disappointing this time. read more

We were takin care of by a great waitress. She had a cute lil personality and was on top of her game. I thought the layout of the joint was kinda funky. But they have a ton of live shows that go on here, so it makes sense for a music venue! The Meat Puppets played the last weekend we were in town! But a ton of DJ's and bands play there. Sometimes they have rad nights , where you can sample beers and burgers, a great pairing for this joint! The BF got the Shroomers Delight or Shroom Burger, considering it is Humboldt the Mushrooms weren't psychedelic but they were fresh and chocked full of them, it also had a Red Pasilla Pepper and was filled with Chevre cheese, Grilled Onions and he about died and went to heaven , busted a nut over this damn burger. The Cheese, was smooth rich and creamy , a delight! He loved every minute eating that burger. I even got to hear just how good it was the next few days. My burger was great too, but Im pretty boring when it comes to burgers! Let me tell you the difference there is in their meat compared to meat from So cal.. so good so pure and fresh !! I eat here pretty regularly and it is always consistently excellent. I usually get a burger, veggie burger, southwest chicken wrap, blt, or garden salad with meat added. I wish they still had the all-veggie sandwich, though. The sweet potato fries are the best in Humboldt, in my opinion. They come with a delicious chipotle mayo dipping sauce. One of the best meals I have had here was actually a breakfast this past fall during football season. I'm not a huge wings fan, but others I know really like them. The staff are all really friendly and attentive. You can tell they enjoy working here! read more

Bottling and Internet information show this beer being brewed in Paso Robles. I know that Humboldt Brews was the original Brewery of this product! Either way! The Hemp Ale Beer should have maybe put a little of the other byproduct from that leaf in it because it just wasn't a very tasty ale. For Marketing purposes, it is done right. Put a hemp leaf on the bottles label and every nut bag in Northern Cali will drink it up. I guess my preference is for a more well rounded structured ale. Great for a laugh! But I will stick to the stoners at Lagunitas for my beer! Cheers! read more

Family was visiting and dad wanted to watch college football so I took them to Humbrews knowing that's pretty much the only place in town we could go to. I usually go with all my friends and always enjoy the shows. When we walked in, there were maybe three tables sat. Not busy at all!! We asked about getting a tv turned onto the channel.. And we're given rude looks. We order beer and it took about 15 minutes to get them with no one else ordering at the bar. There are other little things that don't matter but all in all, they were not busy and treated us as if we were a burden to them. I usually love going in and relaxing and have never had a problem. Having this happen while showing family around town is frustrating so I have decided unless there's a show I HAVE to go to, I will not be back for a good while. read more

I became a regular at Humboldt Brewery shortly after it opened. Back then, it was a family pub, a nice quiet place to meet with friends or take the kids where they could enjoy excellent food--especially the Buffalo wings--while the folks sampled some of the best microbrewery beers around. I was particularly fond of the Oatmeal Stout, which I sipped three or four nights a week in the back bar while watching a Raiders game with the owner, Mario Celotto. My friends and I could chat without having to raise our voices, would gorge ourselves on the outstanding wings, play some darts and unwind after a busy day. Then Mario decided it was time to cater to the college crowd at nearby Humboldt State University. The change probably improved Mario's profit margin drastically, but it destroyed my favorite pub. The last time I went into the tavern, it was crowded with obnoxious and loud college students, all trying to out-cool their companions and generally acting like morons. The family dining room was gone, loud music raged through the pub and after one quick drink, I got the hell out of there and vowed never to return. That was a lie to myself, it turned out, when a friend bought me a ticket to see Randy Newman perform live at the pub's showroom. I sat in the front row and made more than occasional eye contact with Randy--which was somewhat cool--but the folding metal chair in which I sat made me feel as if a dentist had followed me to the pub, repeatedly stabbing me in the ass with a syringe filled with Novocain. So, even though I enjoyed the music, as I staggered numb-buttedly out of the place I again vowed never to return. Now I've been in LA for a dozen years, so I have no idea what the now-called "Humboldt Brews" is like, but I suspect the increased income appealed to Mario (or whoever owns it now) enough to continue encouraging insufferable college students to come in and drink themselves blind every night. Ah, higher education in America. I just hope that the inebriated students learn something other than how to be tree-hugging, paid environmental protesters who don't understand what they're protesting through their collective hangover haze. read more

Stopped by HumBrews on a Saturday night to see a local show with Nico M. and her posse. The DJs played an eclectic mix of funk, classic, reggae, funk--almost all on VINYL!!! Humboldt locals told me that the DJs worked at a nearby record shop that's comparable to High Fidelity. The unique Arcata crowd was friendly, spirited, with an appropriate level of rowdiness. The stage and dancefloor are attached to the main section of the bars, with a smaller bar for performances. They offered a few microbrews originating from NorCal, plus $3.50 for hipster standby PBR. Between the friendly hippies, resident hobos, and indie scenesters the large dancefloor became animated quickly. I would compare the attendees to a Phish crowd, with people from all walks of light dancing to their own rhythm. read more

Great place, nice enough people, but service was slow. I sat around at the bar waiting to get my drink order taken - which wasn't much of a big deal as there were a good amount of people in the bar with some play off games on. I did, then, decide to order food, one of the patty melts. I ordered it medium, with fries and then ordered another drink. Got the drink, and got all but through with that drink when I was told that the food would be up soon. They were pretty backed up in the kitchen, so I wasn't going to be pushy. Finally, the food did come, the fries were slightly above room temperature, and the melt was just about room temperature. The meat inside? Actually cold. It was served almost medium rare, and I say almost because it was more on the rare side. I was so hungry though, I just ate and kept my mouth shut. If I'm in the area, I would stop by.. the food was good, and it could have just been something that got lost in the shuffle of the busy night so I won't hold it against them. I was visiting Arcata and my friend recommended we try this place. I was very hungry and was not happy to be waiting for a table for about 15 minutes. In my head I thought this was going to be a terrible experience. As the night went on it continued to be slow. We learned that their meal ticket machine had broke and it was their chefs 3rd night with only having 2 days of training. Even with all these setbacks it turned out to be one of the BEST dining experiences I've had. The waiting staff was amazing and super friendly and personable. They also put a round of beers on the house to compensate for the slow service. I left very satisfied with the food and the service! read more

Went with a friend while in town and she had hot wings and fries and I had the 3 cheese grilled cheese and ceasar salad. She really liked the SECOND batch of wings...the first batch was WAAAYYYY over cooked and dried out. The second batch was plump, juicy and tasty. They gave a LOT of fries and they were thin, crispy and seasoned...VERY GOOD! I wanted to eat ALL of them...but they werren't mine so... lol. I had the grilled cheese with the chevre, pepperjack and cheddar. It was kind of cold...the cheese was melted but it wasn't warm at all...and the bread was toasted but cold. It didn't seem like it was GRILLED together at all...it just seemed like they toasted it open faced and then added the tomatoes and onions. It was still very tasty though...it just wasn't a grilled cheese, more like a cold, toasted sandwich. Whatever. The ceasar salad tasted good but it had a LOT of dressing on it. All in all I would go back because like I said it tasted good but it definitely could have been executed much better. Oh and the service was friendly. read more

More frat bar than brewery the restaurant was a great disappointment. Dissapointment #1 they had bud and bud light on special. When you make a far superior beer you are doing a great disservice to mankind by peddling cheap swill. Dissapointment #2 The chicken wings were dried, chewy, and if that wasn't bad enough, tasted like pure vinegar. Dissapointment #3 A bunch of college age males were in the back singing the national anthem on a non-sports day. In arcata I want my anti-war songs, not a bunch of frat boys singing songs before they drop out of school and enlist up. IPA was very taste a bit on the sweet side and low on the hops. Hemp ale actually tastes better in a bottle than on draft. Which if you've tried it is not a compliment. read more

Atmosphere: Just like any bar but with a restaurant inside lol. There's music, people laughing, and everyone just having a good time. I think they don't let in anyone under 21 once the kitchen closes because now its just like any other bar lol Food: The food here was very good, however, the so called "garlic fries" looks like they just chopped up some garlics and dumped it on regular french fries, and you pay like 1 or 2 dollars extra I think. I don't think that's what garlic fries are, or at least how I have recieved them in other restaurants. The only think I tried here was the loadie burger, which I thought was pretty good. Service: We had a very large group coming in, and the waitress was very kind to us and entertained us a little as well. She was nice enough to split the bill for all of us ( don't think it will happen everytime, but we were glad she did.) She got us what we needed and helped us whenever we needed. For a brewpub, humbrews is my favorite in Humboldt county. Decent menu, good variety of brews, good community support, and a commitment to diverse entertainment offerings keeps me coming back. The bartenders and wait staff are both generally helpful, social, and interested in your experience. If you have any trouble with your order, everyone is usually pretty receptive. If this place gets a little more diversity Rollin on the menu and maybe some fresh blood on the taps... I'll be stoked to hand them a 5 star read more

So lets say you are traveling through the northern california area and you say to yourself, "You know, I could really use an amazing meal at a cool place with good beers on tap with some great live music." Well look no further my friend!!! You found it! I was on a trip to Petrolia and coming out of the lost coast and we got a tip from a local to come here. Its like they knew that it was a good place or something! Here's the breakdown: Service: Friendly, timely, and gave us extra sauces without having to ask, also offered to split the bill even though we were a party of 6 Food: Our table shared a sampler platter, and we got the spicy wings. Totally spicy! Some people couldn't even hang. Also the chipotle dip is really good with that. I had the veggie pita with a side salad, and it was excellent. No complaints from the other people at the table either on their food choices. Ambiance: Wood everything! I love that in a brew pup! Also very big and open which meant I didn't feel crowded by anyone sitting nearby. Music: We didn't actually see any music there, but I saw the posters and Jackie Greene was playing there soon so I knew it was a good live music venue. Overall: I loved it! The food the experience, the beer it was all great. PS: the only reason I dinged it a star was because they don't brew their own beers on site anymore. Went in tonight for a great burger and beer, but am horribly sick from the poorly cooked meat. Asked for a medium to medium rare, but got a raw burger. I know I should have sent it back but pussed out. I know better too. Must been cause the server was so awesome I didn't want her to feel bad. I showed her afterwards and she agreed. Whatever. I'm a local and have come here for over a decade. Owners Andy and Robin work hard. Believe in pouring local brew. Are invested in the community. There are over 20 regional beers on tap at all time, and they are thoughtfully selected. The menu is broad and no surprises. Solid pub fare. If you love to watch sports (especially soccer) this is the place to be! The local soccer community congregates here for most of the big games. This is a kid-friendly place up until 9 PM or so. The music venue has above average acoustics and is distinct but connected to the main pub/dining area. Enjoy! read more
