We had to head out to what was referred to as the "hottest Chinese restaurant in Dallas." But it's not in Dallas. "Where are we going? Oklahoma?" I asked. Once we arrived, however, the majority Asian clientele made it look promising. The food did not disappoint. The best thing was a tofu dish with black mushrooms. I am not sure I ever ate tofu that tasty. The green beans were also cooked better than they are at the other "best" Chinese restaurants. I'd echo an earlier review on the intense flavors and superb presentation. I'll mention something else that is in todays environment is important. I took my cousin to the restaurant next door because we both love spice and Chinese food and it too was unique and interesting. Two weeks later I returned with a guest ordering the same dishes and it was a disaster, should have know it was almost empty and no management on the floor. I mention this because I will be at Hunan Bistro tomorrow with guests and to be sure we won't be disappointed I went by Sat. and it was humming very busy with many Asian families. The lamb with fish filet is in a thick soup severed in a dish over a flame and is superb don't let the combination put you off .I had the frog with peas one day when I was alone and although very tasty like many Chinese dishes was small pieces on the bone. Tasty food, but horrible service. They rushed us to make order. I had to call our waitress to refill hot tea and water. They also automatically charged 20% tips for 6 people (we only had 5) without noticing me. I asked them to remove it so I could custom the tips, but they had all kind of excuses not to do it and embarassed me infront my clients. After we paid, they asked us to leave the table for the next customer. So rude!!! There are so many good Chinese restaurants in Plano. Won't go back to this place again. read more

ugh so good. we've eaten here at least 5 times since moving to dallas. the beef dry pot is our go to dish but everything is delicious here. spicy as hell! The asparagus lettuce for the win. I have never had or heard of asparagus lettuce before but with the lady who worked there told me about them. I loved them that I can't seem to stop thinking about them. They had a great flavor. I also have the cumin beef which was spicy and had a little too much oil for my taste. My family and I went here a few times and the foods weren't bad with reasonable priced. My favorite is the soft tofu and the ribs with potatoes. The foods here are spicy and greasy. OMG, the first very authentic hunan style food from China opened in DFW area. Hunan food, known as spicy and salty. If you don't like spicy food, don't even try it. We tried rosted fish, eggplant striped fried with green beans and most importantly sticky syrup wrapped sweet potato named 拔丝地瓜 in Chinese. This dish is very hard to make at home, only trained Profesional cheif can make good 拔丝地瓜 and of course, this dish made by this restaurant surprised me. The staff is nice. The menu large. We tried two dishes we've never had before. One was pretty good, but the other was terrible. Neither of us could eat it. Our waiter was Chinese and said many Chinese like it. I wish he said something to us when we ordered since we are Caucasian and we said we hadn't had or before. We couldn't eat it. We ordered 3 items via Doordash and it turned out to be a fiasco. The peasants on herbal jelly（冰粉） had a musty smell. It tasted like the jelly was made 3 days ago. NO FRESH AT ALL. It was the worst meal I've ever had at a restaurant in Dallas! I ordered the Shrimp with Leeks and I could smell that yucky fishy smell even before the food was set down on the table. Fresh seafood doesn't smell. Seafood that has been sitting around for too long smells and should not be consumed. I ate about ¼ of my plate and just pushed it away. (Also, it was chopped green onions, not leeks as the menu stated.) Meanwhile, my dining partner ordered the House Fried Rice (comes with beef, chicken and shrimp), but what he got was Fried Rice with Beef, Shrimp and Squid!!! I tasted it and it was totally flavorless. It was the most non-flavored Fried Rice I can ever remember tasting. He suggested we go somewhere else and order dinner and I told him I was thinking the same thing. He ate about half of his entrée, we paid the bill, and left hungry. We also ordered Egg Rolls as an appetizer - and yet again, very flat tasting. Just no flavor. They were served with a very strange tasting plum or apricot sauce (we weren't sure). Total disappointment. Hunan Bistro gets very high Yelp! ratings and the food supposedly is authentic Chinese (not the Americanized Chinese that most Chinese restaurants serve here). I've gone to other Chinese restaurants in Dallas and other cities that supposedly served authentic Chinese food versions and they were way better! The menu is a gigantic book of pictures of all their menu items. Lots of meat entrées, very few meaningful vegetarian options. A big disappointment. I would give it 0 stars it I could. The food here is pretty good if you order the right items. I'm personally not accustomed to the hunan taste so many of the items are too spicy for my taste. Every time I come here, I'm left feeling full and that's pretty good. The dishes here are very different in size depending on what you order. Some items have double the portion others do and that is something to beware. My main issue with this place is seating. When it gets busy, it gets real busy with a long wait. They hav recently removed their online line check in through yelp and that is a huge disappointment because I could check in at home and stroll on by when it was about my time. Today I came in with a large table of 10 and we didn't do reservation because they only take reservations with a minimum charge of $200. They seated us at a round table in the main room, however their turntable was way too big for the round table, so we had no room to eat (see attached pic) and I kept dropping everything. My wife and I were referred here by a friend. The staff was very professional and courteous. We ordered dry pot tofu, braised cabbage, rice cake with brow sugar, a cold jelly bean dessert. Eggplant in a brown sauce, pork belly with buns, and cold sliced beef with cilantro, and corn with potatoes. Too much to eat , but plenty of leftovers for lunch. This is my new favorite authentic Chinese restaurant in DFW! I have high standards for Hunanese food, since my grandfather is from Hunan (and I have actually been there / eaten there). My friend, who is Hunanese, recommended to this place, as well. The best dish on the menu is the Kou3 Wei4 Yu2 Pian4, which is a super soft fish (so soft that it's almost like tofu!) with a seriously out of this world sauce. The fried intestine dishes are also good, along with their spicy cucumber appetizer. You really can't go wrong with most of the items on their menu, though I recommend ordering some of their more unique or special items that you can't find in typical Chinese restaurants. I keep coming back to order my favorite dishes and trying new ones, too. 5 stars for authenticity and for that specific fish dish... I haven't been able to find it anywhere else! read more
