We have been here about 5 times now. It's our new favorite place. The quality of their food and their sauces just seems better than other places. We with dine in or carry out. We have tried the beef egg fu young, general tso chicken, chicken with broccoli, Singapore rice noodles, crab Rangoon, and hot and sour soup. All of it was great. We love it here. This is my go to Chinese food place. Tonight I ordered fried dumplings, egg rolls and orange chicken. The dumplings tasted frozen. The egg rolls had barely any filling. The orange chicken tasted more floury than usual and wasn't spicy at all. I called and talked to a female that works there. She mentioned something about vendors but I thought everything was fresh. I understand that it's hard for small businesses at this time but if I'm going to get frozen food that was heated up, then I'll buy it at the grocery store. Our first visit here is a mixed review. I will start off with the negative first. Service - first and foremost the service was bad. More specifically the person at the front counter was not happy to see us and greeted us as though we were a nuisance. Apparently answering the dine in or take out question with dine in was the wrong answer. We were given styrofoam plates to eat on. While Hunan Cafe has tables, I can't help but to come away with this was meant to be a take out restaurant. You walk up and order your food, seat yourself and clean up after yourself. The decor was modern and cold instead of inviting and warm. This of course is a matter of personal preference. The food was served as it was finished so some received their food before others. This didn't bother us too much since the timeframe was rather short. The food also had mixed reviews. My wife had the combination rice. She stated it was OK, but not great. The kids ordered the steamed dumplings. Half had meat, half didn't. They liked their combination Lo Mein, but when asked how it compared to other Lo Mein dishes in the are, they said they liked the others more. I had the Crispy Chicken which I found delicious. The chicken and vegetables were fresh and the chicken had a nice crunch on the coating. The sauce was sweet with a slight hint of spice. The sauce wasn't overbearing and appropriately proportioned. We will be back, but next time it'll be take out. read more

I ordered the combination fried rice and spring rolls. Unfortunately, the food missed the mark in every way possible. The small pieces of chicken and beef in the combination fried rice dish were very rubbery and lacked in flavor. The shrimp were ok. The rice just had the appearance as though it was tossed in the wok with soy sauce and then the rubbery pieces of chicken, beef, and shrimp were added. The spring and egg rolls contents appeared to have just cabbage and a very small amount of carrot. The rolls tasted like fried wraps with no content. read more

We dined in tonight for the first time. The food was very good and fresh. The environment is not very comfortable and comparable to a fast food type atmosphere while dining in. The pricing is similar to higher end Chinese restaurants that offer actual glassware and plates for customers. The waitress seemed very overwhelmed and messed up our order several times as they were very busy with carryout orders. I would try them again but would probably elect to do carryout. read more

This is hands down the worst Chinese food I've ever had. We ordered Hunan Chicken, spring rolls and fried rice. The vegetables were total mush. Now we're not just talking overcooked- we're talking vegetables that have been reheated several times- the broccoli was dead. It was disgusting. The chicken had connective tissue here and there- which is inedible. The sauce had a very odd taste. Fried rice was slightly brown and dry but tasteless. The spring rolls were way undercooked so it was greasy mush inside. Man I wouldn't eat a meal there if you paid me. On top of that, they got the order wrong and charged me for dinner size when I clearly requested lunch size. I'm a good cook myself and I know beyond a shadow of a doubt, that I could have cooked a much better Chinese meal at home. OMG. I come here every once in awhile because it being close by my office. I would say this is one of the best Chinese foods in the Haymarket/Gainesville area. I tried the other places nearby and they don't match the quality of this place. I talked to the young man Izzy at the counter, and he was helpful and kind. He recommended, the chicken and cashew nuts and general Tso's and now I always get these orders. Izzy is a friendly talker making time fly by. I would say the restaurant should be thankful to have him since he's such a wholesome person. I always see him helping others customers with a positive attitude and making sure that they're doing well. Hope you this place! read more

It's a recent store opening so maybe they're dealing with issues. First visit, my husband and I had lunch, it was good. Second visit, I got the pepper steak for take out, just for one. It was really good. Today, I wanted to do the same, I walked in and there were no customers. I only saw two people and both were employees. One was a Hispanic looking fellow that was dressed like a cook or another position for the kitchen was at a diners table who gave me a blank stare. There was a fellow at the counter where you order that had his bald head laying on his arms that appeared to be napping. He didn't budge when I entered the restaurant. I had lunch delivered today from Hunan Café. The driver was courteous. I ordered the Lunch Special Twice Cooked Pork. It came with fried rice and a spring roll. I also ordered two appetizers-Crab Rangoon and Spare Ribs. Everything was fresh and delicious. But, I was particularly impressed with the Crab Rangoon. They were light and fluffy. I also requested that the pork NOT be SPICY and they complied with my request. Hunan will now be my go-to place for Chinese food. read more

I have to say I was very disappointed with the food at this place. I decided to try this place as I am new to the area. I went in ordered my food and was told it would be about a 10 minute wait which I was ok with, but to my surprise my food was done in less than 5 mins which I thought was a great thing until I got back to work and realized the chicken was not done and it tasted very weird and uncooked. I have to say I will not be going back there again. As a fast food restaurant I feel that making sure the food is well done should be one of their main priorities instead of trying to get their customers out the door in a rush. read more

This is one of the best Chinese food in the area. I love their lunch specials. You can get so much for your money. But the takeaway is that the food is always cooked fresh. This is the 2nd time I've tried this restaurant, and it will be the last. The food was absolutely horrible. We had Sweet & Sour soup. It was mostly broth, very little veggies, and pretty tasteless. My husband had General Chicken which was so disgusting, we tossed it. It was very tiny pieces of chicken, heavily breaded, in an orange color sauce. I had twice cooked pork which was just OK. Excellent flavor, especially tasty is the noodle soup. Everything fresh and you aren't dying for water after you eat. Staff very friendly plus 10% discount if you have a military ID. Only downside is recently they are skimping on vegetables in the dishes and you end up with 90% cabbage. Still, enjoy the food very much. read more

The food isn't bad. If you want fancy Asian food for dinner than go to Asian Garden or someplace with a more formal setting. This place is quick, it's fast, you help yourself too the fortune cookies, chopsticks, and sauces. There is free tea and water. The rice isn't dry. It's just not filled with oils. I am a fan of the sesame chicken and orange chicken with fried rice. The shrimp rice noodles is also a great option. I very much enjoy their wonton soup as well. I like that their food isn't as oily or full of MSG as most Asian food is in other places. read more

Was in the area and this was the only place to eat other than a grocery store or Baskin Robbins. Apparently, this place is under new management. The food came out super fast and was really flavorful. I can't tell what set this food apart from other Chinese restaurants, maybe because they don't use MSG, but everything tasted really fresh. Their Kung Pow chicken was actually spicy and had fresh and different veggies than most places. Their crab rangoon was really good, which in my experience isn't common. I ordered food for delivery and I live very close to the restaurant. I was pleased with the delivery time. It didn't take long at all. There is a $15 order minimum for delivery, which is understandable, so I added a large order of fried rice to make the delivery minimum. I was surprised when I opened the package to see that the fried rice was just plain rice that was fried...no eggs, peas, carrots or anything. Seemed like a waste of $5 to me. I got the beef and broccoli main dish and it was very good. Not greasy. I will be going back but I would not recommend getting the fried rice side dish. read more

My wife and I decided to try this place because it was very close to where we live. I had the "two in a dish" - chicken and shrimp with vegetables in a white sauce, and my wife had the steamed shrimp with vegetables. The shrimp on both of our meals was slightly over cooked, as was my chicken. We had brown rice instead of white rice, and the quantity seemed less than what we usually get at the other nearby Chinese food restaurant in Gainesville. They also charge $2 extra for Brown rice, whereas other places usually only charge $1. Both dishes had a good quantity of vegetables, though. Overall, the food wasn't worth the price, and we'll be going back to our regular restaurant the next time we get Chinese food. read more
