Amazing service, huge variety of food, reasonable prices, nice big parking lot = a great dinner for our very hungry family of 5! Our waiter went above and beyond to attend to us and was very pleasant, as was the rest of the staff! The food came fast, and hot, and everything was delicious. The food is OK in this restaurant, however, the service from waitress is horrible. They don't really have patience to customer, and in the end, they want to rush you out of door, if there are too many customers nearby the door. It ends up no fortune cookies, no fruits. I don't know why i bother. They NEVER get me the food in the time quoted. It's always 20 minutes later than that. Today I called before they were even open at 4pm and asked if I can order food for pick up by 4:45pm. I even showed up at 4:50 knowing they are always late. And here I am, 5pm and it's still not ready. And the women has the nerve to look at me like I'm crazy when this is a constant thing here. She never apologizes. Wow. This was the worst Chinese food I have ever had. By far. I mean, I'm stunned that they have 4 stars here on Yelp and that some of the people giving it good reviews are Chinese. When I got there, there were only two other people in the place so they told me I could sit anywhere so, I chose a booth. The table top was a tablecloth covered by a piece of plexiglass and the plexiglass was FILTHY - food stuck on it, smears of who knows what, etc., so I moved to a table which had only a tablecloth. I ordered two dishes: 1) Chinese mushrooms & bamboo shoots; and 2) Mandarin chicken - and I ordered steamed rice with it. The mushroom dish was in a gloopy brown sauce that you could tell was not freshly made. The button mushrooms were fresh and raw; the black mushrooms were presumably dried because they were so bloated from, I assume, being rehydrated that they were just gooshy blobs with no flavor. The bamboo shoots and water chestnuts were fine. The dish had no flavor what-so-ever, so much so that I did something I don't do -- I added soy sauce and . . . still flavorless. The Mandarin chicken was also strangely flavorless. It looked good with this sticky brown sauce flecked with dried chilies but absolutely no flavor. The chicken wings themselves were deep fried and they were nicely crispy but, again, the sauce just tasted like nothing. The steamed rice was gross as well. I'm half-Japanese and I love the short-grained rice that the Japanese use when I'm eating Japanese food but for Chinese food, I prefer the long-grained, fluffier rice. This rice was . . . I don't know what. It was stuck together in large clumps and over-cooked and pretty awful and . . . if an Asian restaurant can't cook rice . . . I dunno what to say. I learned how to cook rice from my mother (water to the first knuckle of the pinky finger!) and it's perfect every time so, it's pretty hard to mess up rice but . . . they did. We went there with my mom didn't receive great service from the start. We sat down to eat and another family that came in after us had their food way before we did and were eating before we even had an appetizer. When we did get the food everything came in at once and the pork fried rice was all fat. Fat pieces of pork that when picked out filled the whole plate. The picky Chinese diner in me is super picky.... and I never thought I'd ever find a Chinese restaurant that I would frequent in Pleasanton, until we tried Hunan Chef. The food is authentically prepared, perfectly flavored.. and the best part is.. not too salty. If you love Asian food, you know restaurants always go heavy handed with salt and soy sauce. Not here at Hunan Chef. Must-haves: Sizzling Rice Soup (it's like the Chinese version of the Matzo Ball soup. Light clear broth with vegetables and crispy rice bits) This will be my winter go-to. Mongolian Beef Paper Wrapped Chicken Garlic Eggplant Stir-fried vegetable delight The white-boy bf loves their sweet and sour pork, and occasionally goes for their cherry pork which is similar in taste, and still yummy. This is based on the two noodles dishes me and my wife had. Visited for late lunch (1pm) on a Tuesday. We are both chinese and will be pickly about certain dishes, especially the two we ordered. The ratings are based on the where we got these dishes, keep in mind this is Pleasanton, not Oakland, San Francisco (which we both grew up), or San Jose. She had the spicy seafood noodle soup, most other places call this Champong (or Jjampong) and is one of the most popular Chinese-Korean dishes made and enjoyed all over Korea. Good amount of seafood, good spicyness, and fresh noodles, 4 stars I had the chinese meat sauce noodles, otherwise known as ja jiang mein. Very good with a good amount of minced pork, Some places skimp on the pork and over do the sauce, this wasn't the case. 4 stars here also. However the prices on the menu indicated $9.95, when we got the check it was $10.95, but there was no taxes added so perhaps they incorporated this into the price. It wasn't worth the fight as we both enjoyed the noodles and decided to let it go. I would only give 2.5 stars to the waiter. Not one to hold a conversion with or become friends, he just did his job and when no one needed his service would sit down and read the paper, but I didn't come to this joint for a 5 star service experience either. So overall I would make this my go to for these noodle dishes for the Tri Valley. read more

Diners beware! My family and I came here for lunch the other day and the food was actually pretty good. However, the problem came when we received our bill. They scribbled a few words in Chinese and listed the total bill at $70. That seemed a little too high for what we ordered, so I found a menu with the prices and added the items together... They had overcharged us over $20! Once I pointed it out to the waiter, he made up some lame excuse about how they probably didn't clear the calculator when they added up our bill. They were able to fix it though in the end, so that was good. So just be careful if you eat here because they might try to pull a fast one on the bill! read more

Still looking for that good Chinese in Pleasanton. Granted this is the first place I've tried other than Uncle Yu's in Livermore (which is great) and PF Changs which is always decent. The food was pretty much blah. Honey Walnut Prawns - Agree with Kaite T. Definately earned them a star. Mongolian Beef - This is what took the review down. It was really spicy and not the oniony/salty type taste I like in my MB. SS Pork, Orange Chicken - Honestly very little taste. By far the worst food I've eaten in a long time. Both my wife and I had the same experience when we ordered chicken chow mein, hunan chicken, pork fried rice and crab cream cheese won tons. The food lacked flavor and had a strong bitter taste overall. I'm sorry to say we didn't eat the $50 worth of food as it went straight to the garbage. What we did eat gave one of us diarrhea. I too was sad when the original owners decided to shift gears and sell their business earlier this year as I'd been a fan of the family run Hunan Chef Wong since 2000 and had watched their family grow up together at the restaurant (the family shortened the name to Hunan Chef a decade ago to avoid confusion with a another downtown Chinese restaurant with a similar name). On a recent visit I was delighted to see the new owners and chef have resurrected a fresh new Schezuan restaurant in similar surroundings respecting and retaining the original name and recharging the menus with many new, authentic menu choices. My first stop at the new spot was for some take-out. The new menu is very expansive and diverse with many traditional Schezuan dishes listed (in English and Chinese). I asked for help in making my choices and was happily rewarded. The simply listed Fish Filet with Dual Flavor delivered two large well prepared filets one with a fresh green chili sauce the other with fresh red chilies, steamed in a light fish broth garnished with mild red and green chilies and fresh cilantro. The portion was generous and the fish was fresh and tasty. The new chef also makes their own noodles so I ordered the dumplings (potstickers) and two orders of chicken chow mein banking that they would be delish. Both dishes were amazing and the fresh pasta and noodles were yummy and toothsome against both the savory pork and chicken filling of the dumplings and quick sauté of chicken and veggies in the chow mein. The staff were very helpful and visibly excited to help introduce their special dishes and authentic offerings to to their guests. I look forward to many more visits to the new Hunan Chef. read more

I love that the shrimps in the honey walnut shrimp are big and thick, it also has a citrus taste compared to the regular ones you find in other Chinese resto. Their hot and sour soup is not too sour and feels so "cleansing". The combo fried rice is not oily. Mongolian beef is tender, taste is okay. Their house tea is refreshing and is not diluted. The service is also good. The lady who attended to us was nice and sweet. read more

The restaurant looks like it used to be a Denny's, because there are faded booths around the perimeter and the floor is cracked and dirty in places. We ordered Kung Pao Chicken. The order arrived in about three minutes. It looked like a bunch of chopped up thigh meat pieces, raw peanuts and raw green peppers. The onions weren't cooked enough. It definitely needed more time in the wok. But I guess they were in a hurry. The food was served in a bland sauce, that did not taste like Kung Pao chicken sauce. We took a few bites, were very disappointed, paid and left with the food still on the plates. I don't understand the positive reviews. Either they're fake or they're written by people who have never eaten Chinese food except at the local mall food court. I will not be coming back here and do not recommend this restaurant. read more

If you want some fast chinese food...and I do mean fast..then you seriously need to check this place out. I felt like we were literally in and out in like 5 mins! You walk in and the restaurant is nice with a fountain in the middle. The friendly guy at the counter takes your order...one mongolian beef and one orange chicken lunch special - to go please. The guy says the order to the guys in the open kitchen and we get our food within minutes! One star off though for having more green onions and regular onions in my mongolian beef instead of MORE BEEF! Next time, please add a little more BEEF! That's what I wanted! I happened to stumble upon this place when I was craving Chinese take out on a Monday and my regular spot was closed that day. I ordered the walnut prawns and they were delicious. I typically am not a fan of walnut prawns because I don't like all the mayonnaise they slather on them. But after reading so many raves on yelp, I decided to give them a try. I was not disappointed! I also ordered the mongolian beef which was also very good. The chow mein was good but a little too greasy as others have mentioned. Last week, my bf and I decided to dine in and we were both quite impressed. The service and food were fantastic. This time, we tried a tofu dish, seafood combination and hot and sour soup. HORRIBLE service!! I've been coming here for years for Takeout but for my Son's birthday we decided to dine in. As our group of 5 got seated the waitress kept saying something we couldn't understand and we were politely telling her we didn't know what she was asking. Finally she YELLED asking if we needed a highchair which was not only embarrassing and RUDE but odd since our group was all ages 17 and up. Although there were only 2 other groups in the restaurant, they took a VERY long time to take our order. When the tea arrived we asked if it was regular or decaf. After several minutes of trying to explain to her what regular/decaf was another patron in the restaurant was able to tell us it was caffeinated. Then, they brought out one chicken item which we all stared at as we waited at least another 15 minutes for the rest of our food. Meanwhile, we asked the waitress to keep it under the warmer which she would not do. I completely support diversity, however the lack of being able to communicate, rude behavior to us as guests, and extended wait time for food was extremely disappointing and made this special dinner overall a bad experience. read more

This place is as good as it gets! The food is always great and consistent. I have been coming to this restaurant for more than 20 years. The service is great and the food is outstanding. We went today and it was a bit after 3pm, but they still let us order off the lunch menu. I ordered the shredded pork in garlic sauce. It was PERFECT! Yummy pork with mushrooms, bamboo shoots, bell pepper all cut into tiny strips and stir fried with this yummy garlic sauce, served with rice and a spring roll, soup and hot tea all for one great price. My wife and I saw this place and were hungry, so decided to take a risk and try out their food... and we sure are glad we did. The food portions are great, and prices are exactly where I wanted them to be. The owner came and introduced himself and told me about him and his business. Typically I don't like it when that happens because I feel weird.. not this time. I asked him some questions and ended up trying more of his food. Frankly, I am a fan. I will definitely go there again, without a doubt. On a side note, this morning I woke up and had a lingering for his food. I would like to say, his food is great even as leftovers. Happened to be in Pleasanton for a fundraising walk for diabetic alert dogs, and had a craving some good Chinese food. This satisfied the craving! We had 10 people and one service dog, and it was great they had a large round table that fit all of us. The waiter was great and had a good sense of humor. We ordered two appetizers. Pot stickers and egg rolls. Both were healthy portions. We ordered a huge selection of dishes. Highlights: spicy eggplant. Green beans. Kung pao chicken. Low light was the broccoli. This happens to be a frequent location of mine. Their lunch specials are good for the price. There is no line. As soon as you walk in one of the workers will greet you and ask if you have a preference to sit. Once seated with your menu, they leave and come right back with your soup and tea. I can't be exactly sure on the type of tea they have, but to me it has a hint of jasmine in it. The soup used to be more spicy before, but they have toned it down some. It's great for those that don't like the spice. As for the lunch specials, my favorites are the hunan chicken and sweet and sour pork. That's mostly because of the taste and that they are the cheapest of the lunch specials at $7.95. The sweet and sour prawns are great too, but are a couple dollars more and they don't give you as much. The service has always been a good experience and I do recommend this restaurant. read more
