Just a quick update...... The inside of this place is actually quite nice. There's even a little water fall in the middle of the restaurant that my youngest daughter loves. We mostly order from here for delivery, and are always pleased with what they serve. They are very friendly, helpful when you are trying to decide what to order and have always delivered on time. This is pretty much the only Chinese place we order delivery from. And we they are always very consistent. -------------------------------------------------- The outside of this place scares me so I've never been inside. Is it smart to eat food when you're too afraid to go inside? Hmmmm. Anyway, this is the only place I order Chinese food from for delivery. their food is really, really good. They are fast too and the food is always hot. Their prices are super reasonable to me and they always get our order right. I was charged twice on Feb 23, 2018. One for $128.50 for the cost of meal and another with the tip $175.00. I called them 2 times and talked with manager Amy??? and ask them to straighten it out and call me back. They never called and both amount is still on my bill. There are actually two Hunan Chef Wongs in Pleasanton. I'm talking about the one on Valley Ave. I tried their sweet and sour chicken take-out a couple of months ago. It was passable, so when the kids decided they wanted Chinese food for dinner, (and were ready to let go of Rose's A Chinese Cafe in Union City, our old family favorite) we were on our way. The service was outstanding. There was only one other table occupied at 5pm though . Our ultra-friendly waiter, who called himself Uncle, was prompt and attentive. We had our regular meal of: Egg rolls Vegetable Chow Mein Sweet and Sour Chicken Steamed Rice Hot Tea No pork won ton soup this time. Everything was pretty tasty. Styrofoam to-go boxes. Not quite to the level of Rose's, but a solid Tier 2 chinese restaurant. Uncle even drew a picture on our to-go box (he also painted the flower mural on the wall). read more

Extremely fast - They used to be quite faster. They'd say, "Be there in 45 minutes." and show up in 15-20. Granted, we live right down the street. The food has fallen off a bit since 2007 or so when we started ordering here. The Spicy noodle soup (grandma's recipe!) is awesome and they routinely will package your noodles separately so it doesn't get all skunky and slimy. We used to get the mandarin chicken fried wings a lot too, but it ended up being that even having it delivered could not makeup for the fact the quality was suffering for some reason. The chicken would be full of broken bones and I can't tell you how unsettling it is to eat a chicken wing which is loaded up with sauces and breading and then realize the bone is broken. It spooks me, so other people who are weird about that beware. I want to still like this place because of the speed and because of the guy running it. He is a nice dude. He always ends up taking my order on the phone so I'm not sure if he simply DOES that while he runs the business or its just coincidence. I hate to say it, but Hunan Chef is outshined by 2 of Pleasanton's gems - Shangrila around the Dublin library and Gold Chopsticks up by WLP and Santa Rita. So, Hunan Chef is not bad. If this was 3 years ago or so, it would've been 4 stars. But the people who worked there back then that made the magic they did clearly aren't still there. The food is chintzy and the delivery is not nearly as fast as it used to be, but (again) the guy running it is nice and this USED to be a competitive restaurant. If you want chinese, though, save your money. The other 2 deliver now as well after many years of not. read more

Came in after a long day of work. The guys at the front immediately greeted me with a smile and were warm and friendly right off the bat. The waiter was extremely nice, funny, and very helpful. My husband and I craved Chinese food today and went to Hunan Chef for lunch. We had General Tso's Chicken, Honey Walnut Prawn, Salt & Peppered Pork Chop, and Chicken Fried Rice (yes, too much for two people LOL) and were blown over. Haven't been here since the new ownership. Very under staffed for Mother's Day weekend. Had to wait about 30 minutes to be seated for a 12:00 pm reservation. Not to mention the wait to receive our food. One dish at a time came out and on top of that the few tables around us who were seated well after us were already receiving their dishes they ordered a few at a time. We were here last week on saturday evening, as it was suggested by a friend that it has just opened recently. I have to say the food is very good and service was decent as well. We ordered the corn soup and it was piping hot and I burned my tongue, but its a good thing, it means the food here is prepared well and fresh. They gave large portions for all the dishes we ordered, so we had plenty of left overs. The prices seem fine and reasonable as well. Its located behind the kfc on santa rita road and may be hard to find, but there is plenty of parking. Will go back again to try out different dishes. read more

This restaurant changed ownership a few months ago and is now serving up a more authentic northern chinese menu. Wonderful food and Amy, the owner, is very kind and cares a lot about her customers and the quality of her food. There is no other restaurant in Pleasanton/Dublin/Livermore serving thick sesame bread or home made noodles. Additionally they serve traditional northern chinese breakfasts on the weekend (fan tuan, doufu fa, xiao long bao, etc.). So amazing that we can get this type and caliber of food in the tri-valley now! read more

This Place is the to go spot in Pleasanton for Chinese food. My fan group, "The Bay Area Ghostbusters" come here after events for the great tasting high value menu. The restaurant is always clean, the staff extremely friendly, and service in my opinion is top notch. Heck I even come here for lunch, or dinner on a weekly basis. I have not tried their delivery service since I live so close but if I order my food to go it's prepared quickly and ready to go when promised. The food was average fare. We had Kung Pao shrimp and shrimp chow mein. I liked the chow mein, the kp was okay. Also had sweet and sour shrimp - it was icky. The color alone was horrible - BRIGHT red. That just isn't natural for food to be that color. Too little shrimp, too much fried stuff and sauce. What I did like was the AWESOME service - friendly friendly waiter - and SO FAST like fast food fast...2 minutes?? Which works great for families like us with kids who cause choas if the wait is too long. The waiter gave my daughter a take-home bag of 6 fortune cookies which made her day!! read more

This is probably my favorite restaurant around this area!! The noodles are to die for and the shen jian bao is basically equivalent to ones we had in Asia. Amy, the owner is the most pleasant and hard working lady I've ever met; and she works to make every customer's experience unforgettable. I've came here twice, and it never failed to disappoint me. Though I went with my family during rush hour, the service was impeccable and the food made us all swoon with happiness. We came here for the first time for a late lunch on Sunday. The place was empty, which is understandable considering it was a random time, and it was so insanely hot outside, I don't think anyone was out and about. We walked in and were served the hot and sour soup, hot tea, and water right away. I ordered the spicy eggplant lunch with steamed rice, and my husband got the curry chicken and fried rice. The fried rice has egg, but no meat, so I may get that next time. I was bummed that the soup I was served was made with chicken broth and pork. I guess that's what happens when you are served soup right away, there's no way to ask for a vegetarian selection. I gave it to my husband who gladly ate it all. The eggplant was delicious though, and my husband really liked his chicken. The eggroll was vegetable, so that was good as well. We got plenty of food, and since it was before 3pm, our meals were lunch specials. Our total was $15 and some change, and I rounded up to $20. Not bad at all!
