Best Chinese in Baldwin county! Singapore mei fun is top tier. I eat here at least once a week

It's been 4 years since I reviewed here, which is my trend I guess, with my last two being in 2016 & 2020. It's been my favorite Chinese in the region since I first tried it nearly ten years ago. China Dragon, located in Gulf Shores, AL, is a well-established Chinese restaurant that has been serving delicious Asian cuisine for over a decade. They have a cozy dining area with a few tables, and while I have dined there quite a few times, I do pick ups for my takeout fix on a lot more occasions, like tonight . They now also have another location in Orange Beach, AL as well but I haven't tried that one, yet :-) Their menu features an assortment of classic Chinese dishes. Appetizers like egg rolls and crab rangoon provide the perfect start to any meal, while the restaurant's signature General Tso's chicken, Mongolian beef, and lo mein dishes showcase the flavors and textures of traditional Chinese cuisine. Side note: Interestingly, General Tso's chicken, a dish named after General Tso, a 19th-century Hunanese general, despite being synonymous with Chinese cuisine in America and around the world, has a somewhat surprising history. The dish wasn't actually created in China, nor was it eaten by the historic General Tso. Instead, it was invented in Taiwan in the 1950's by a chef named Peng Chang-kuei, who had fled there with the Nationalists after their defeat by Mao Zedong's Communists. But then it was transformed into the sweet, fried staple of American Chinese cuisine we know and love in New York City during the 1970s. It is one of my all-time dishes when I'm eating out Chinese, and I do not cook it. There is one dish that I really, really like here that is wildly overlooked. It's simply listed on the menu as "Singapore Rice Noodle" which I've had in Chinatown's from Boston to San Francisco but they don't describe it anywhere here. They do a fantastic job with this dish. Singapore Rice Noodles, is also known as Singapore Mei Fun or Xing Zhou Chao Mi Fen, and a popular stir-fried rice noodle dish with a unique blend of spices and ingredients. Despite its name, the dish is believed to have originated in Hong Kong and is not commonly found in Singapore itself. They make it with rice noodles, onions, carrots, and bean sprouts, with generous portions of shrimp, chicken and beef all cooked perfectly. Speaking of portions, they also give you portions they are easily enough to share with two or more people at very reasonable prices. Try it! In addition to dine-in and takeout services, China Dragon offers delivery through its own dedicated drivers, as well as through third-party platforms like Grubhub and Doordash. First time here... prompt service, course we were the only ones in there. Not very clean looking, which always makes me leery. But we thought we'd give it a try. We ordered hot & sour soup, which was pretty good, kung pow chicken & a beef entree & egg rolls (can't remember exact name). All four of us were in the mood for Chinese food, and unfortunately we decided on this place. The food tasted old. No crunch to it. All four of our meals were soggy. The fried rice didn't taste like regular fried rice. It actually had no taste. Wasted $70.00 bucks. Save your money and go elsewhere! read more

Whether you are a tourist snowbird or a resident and happened to be in the mood for some Chinese. China dragon is where it's at. I happened to be vacationing down here for extended periods of time since 2016 & was in the mood for Chinese one night so I searched through Yelp & and many other sources online and I came across China dragon. I was thinking okay why not they seem to have some great reviews so I decided on China dragon. As soon as I got to the restaurant I felt a very welcoming and friendly ambiance to this establishment. The women in front who runs China dragon is very friendly quaint and is ready to take down your order. I was very impressed with the time the cook took with my order the presentation temperature and taste. I ordered the noodles and shrimp with some general tso's chicken egg rolls and won tons. I absolutely loved it from the first bite my egg rolls and wontons were crunchy my shrimp with noodles & fried rice were to die for hot steamy & chewy. If my order is something that doesn't tickle your fancy. Their menu offers a wonderful selection of other Chinese Delights. My family and I ordered $88.00 worth of food for delivery after a very long day of driving to gulf coast and was very hungry. Around 7:30 pm started looking for door dash or some type of delivery and found only pizza and one Chinese restaurant and was excited to try, even though there was several bad reviews. We didn't have many choices. By 8:00pm we ordered. The lady on the phone said 70-85 minutes. We received our food at 10:15pm. Still tipped the driver $20. I wished I read the bad reviews too!! Our order was correct, our food looked OKAY. So we dug in. My sister in law had sesame chicken dinner. She said her food was perfect. My brother had egg foo yung and egg drop soup. He didn't say it was bad nor good. My husband had chicken wings and shrimp fried rice. He said the wings and rice were bland and put 2 packs of soy sauce, still didn't taste any better. I thought he was just being picky because he never liked Chinese food anyway, but, when I tasted my shrimp lo mein, it had a taste like cigerette ashes have been in it or that it was cooked in a dirty wok. I thought it was me, so my brother tasted it, he says the same thing. Like the noodles or shrimp was cooked in a dirty gritty wok. My chicken teryaki on a stick was normal, so I was somewhat relieved. I decided to have chicken wings, I bit into my 3rd wing and crunched some rocks/sand so loud my family thought I was chewing a piece of bone. It was disgusting! I immediately threw away the food. Everyone threw away their food. What a waste of money. I was highly disappointed. Try if you dare but I hope this place does better! The Fried Bean Curd with Vegetable, Veggie added Tofu Lo Mein, Beef with Mixed Vegetables, and Hot and Sour Soup were fresh and good. We were there for dinner, and their portions were generous. Food were served on to-go containers. Their fried rice was better than white rice. There was only one server, and she was nice and effective. This place is so so good! I haven't eaten there in person but my mom lives on West Beach and we order delivery everytime I visit and it's exactly what you want when craving Chinese food (I live in Manhattan - so I promise I know). Food is always hot and seems super fresh (& we live 7+ miles away). The kung pao chicken, crab Rangoon, and moo shu pork are our faves - but everything we have gotten has been good. It was so hard I couldn't even chew it, the egg roll was so burnt it busted open on the ends and the dumplings were steamed when I asked for pan fried. Great Chinese delivery! We ordered delivery while staying at our condo rental. It was about a 45 minute wait but it arrived hot, fresh and delish. We ordered the crab rangoon, beef and broccoli, lo mein, cashew shrimp (shrimp were huge) and sweet and sour chicken. All were very good. read more

My first priority with reviews is flat-out honesty. But I also don't want to be that guy who is a borderline slanderer. Also, I'm an aspiring food snob. (See my blog in my profile.) Please keep that in mind as you decided whether you want to eat here today/tonight. Service We decided on take-out Chinese at about 8 o'clock on a Wednesday evening (the place closes at 10) and so I called in our order and told the polite lady that we'd be there in about 15-20 minutes. We arrived more like 30 minutes later, yet our order was there -- hot and ready to go. Excellent service. Very nice lady at the counter. Food I don't always believe my nose, and this meal was a reason why. On our 15 minute drive back to our room, I wanted to tear into the to-go sack and take a big ol' bite of something. Anything. It smelled so good. But, I waited. Hot & Sour Soup - It was neither hot, nor sour. Most Chinese joints use white pepper and some vinegar to allow this soup to live up to its name. While there might have been a slight bit or tartness, the Hot & Sour soup from China Dragon contains nary a speck of white pepper. There are some red pepper flakes, but they are only for show. In fact, this soup base is undoubtedly nothing more than H2O (most good restaurants start out with rich chicken stock) and very ... blah. Black Pepper Beef - The beef is tender and the vegetables -- green Bell Pepper and onion -- also seem fresh. There are a couple of quartered mushrooms in the dish too. Wish there were more. The dish is fine for a takeout joint. It was served up hot, and the beef is very tender. Terriyaki Beef - Not bad. I don't know why a Chinese dive is selling the national dish of Japan, but whatever. There's a slight sweetness to the dish and it's definitely something that I could eat again. Just know this: If you expect legit Terriyaki, go to a legit Japanese restaurant. PooPoo Platter - Aptly named, because everything pretty much tasted like ... poo poo. I've inhaled baby powder that had more moisture than the ribs (chicken on a stick was perfectly tender and tasted fine). And I've boiled things that are crispier than the eggrolls, rangoons et al. Now, some of this could be due to the fact that we picked our order up a few minutes later than we said we would. Still.. There are too many Chinese joints in my experience that know how to fry for crispness that lasts longer than the first 30 seconds from the fryer. Pork eggrolls Decent. Not great. I'd order them again, on the chance that the cook turned off the fryer not expecting some evening customers. BOTTOM LINE If I lived here, I'd likely give every other Chinese dive a try before coming back here. The service is fine. Location is good. We love this place! Every time my family comes to Orange Beach we always stop here more than once. The hot and sour soup is amazing as well as the veggie lo mein. Their egg rolls are always hot and perfectly crispy! The people who work here are so kind and very hard working. The lunch specials are very inexpensive and can't be beat! Amazing the quality of Chinese depending on where you get it. We had lunch combos from China Dragon today and it was excellent! Delicious and meaty beef with vegetables combo and triple delight. Placed a takeout order which was ready on time. The egg rolls were excellent, crispy and full of flavor. Unfortunately the same could not be said for Mongolian Chicken, General Tso's Chicken and chicken fried rice. The two chicken dishes lacked any flavor at all. First time we ever had a bland tasting chinese food. The breading on the General Tso's chicken was very thick and had no flavor at all. Delicious! I haven't been able to find edible Chinese food in the Mobile/Bay/Beach area since resettling down here a year ago. (I was in LA, NY and Chicago for 10+ years. Lands of amazing Chinese food.) On a whim I tried this place yesterday and IT IS SO GOOD. Asian Garden in Mobile is the only edible Chinese in Mobile, but it's not great. This place is great. AND they have ACTUAL EGG ROLLS. Not spring rolls. This is a huge deal. HUGE. The pork egg rolls are the best. (Veggie are OK, but I'm terrified of mushrooms so I didn't want to risk eating one.) What I tried and liked: Sweet and Sour chicken. Szechuan chicken (but we changed it up a bit. Chicken, peanuts, pea pods, water chestnuts, green peppers, white onion. HEAVEN IN BROWN SAUCE? Yes. [That's a really gross saying I just made up.]) The chicken fried rice was OK, but needed more egg and flavoring. It was a bit bland. I added a lot of soy sauce and Sriracha and it made it much better. The pork egg foo young was also just OK. Too porky. I'm also not a huge fan of egg foo young, as is, but my LOVER is a fan. Oh, and it's so cheap. We had food for days and it was only $26. Oh², they'll deliver. We live way down Ft. Morgan Road and, while they don't deliver THAT far, they'll meet us about 10 minutes from our house. IT'S GLORIOUS NEWS. I'M GOING TO BE OBESE! I AM SO EXCITED TO HAVE FOUND THIS PLACE. Was looking to take a break from seafood for a night and ended up finding this place via yelp. I read that their business is primarily take out but me and my wife decided to dine in. There isn't to much space in the restaurant but they were very accommodating of us and we received our food very quickly. I also loved the HUGE glass of water we were given:) I had the sesame chicken with fried rice and it was fantastic I was pleasantly surprised. The chicken was crispy and the sauce was very tangy. My wife had the orange chicken and loved it as well. I think this was one of the best Chinese places around. Will definitely be returning next time we are in gulf shores. Oh one more thing....If you do decide to dine in be ready to hear the phone ring off the hook! Not to annoying for me but some may have a problem with it. read more

For the last 11 years, China Dragon has been our go-to for Chinese dinner takeout. It is small and has 3-4 tables but their primary business is takeout or delivery. I have never sat down to eat there. Our regular orders are the Fried Dumplings, Singapore Noodles with extra bean sprouts and spicy Cashew Chicken. Their fried handmade dumplings, though not great to look at, are always awesome with the sweet & tangy dipping sauce. The portion of Singapore noodles serve as both dinner and lunch for work next day. My husband loves their cashew chicken. I'm also very fond of Mr. Hao Fu's roasted duck. I get a whole one every few months to debone its meat & make Roasted Duck Tacos with julienned cucumbers, green onion sprigs & hoisin sauce. read more

If you're reading this: go to the other Chinese place on Canal Rd in Orange Beach. It's 5 minutes away from this place and compared to China Dragon, it's worth every second of the drive. I've tried China Dragon many times, and wanted to like it. (I thought I needed to, when I was under the impression is was the only Chinese on the island.) I was spoiled in Mobile with a great local Chinese hole-in-the-wall that I'd been eating at for years. I used to work just north of the 59 bridge, and suffered through many mediocre lunches at China Dragon when trying to get my Chinese fix before I discovered other options on the island. Maybe I'm a little too picky, but I recommend avoiding this one guys, I was never happy after eating here. read more
