I used to come here when I was younger with my family and remember the restaurant being busy and clean. I walked in yesterday to have dinner and we immediately noticed the tables were empty, both in terms of customers and ...silverware/dishes. We sat down a little confused, and then someone came over and threw (like, actually tossed them, no exaggeration) PAPER plates in front of us and dropped takeout menus on our table and walked away. I have never been so shocked at a restaurant. We looked over and saw the table next to us (only other people in the restaurant) being served their food in takeout containers. It felt like we were inconveniencing the employees to be eating there and we didn't want to pay restaurant prices to be served with disposable plates and silverware. It was all very odd. We decided to leave and go somewhere else. You can't run a sit-down restaurant if you're not willing to serve customers properly. This isn't a takeout restaurant, it's a restaurant that does takeout, but they seem to have completely abandoned their dine-in service without bothering to telling customers. Very odd! read more

This spot I stumbled upon because had a craving for boneless spare ribs and the usual spot was closed. First thing I'd say is who would agree with me that all boneless ribs should by default come with spicy mustard on the side? Overall I'd say won't soup was good but light on flavor. The boneless ribs were alright but I wish they had some more bbq sauce on them. The fried rice was surprisingly better than most places. Like they actually took white rice and fried it! I have celiac disease and so does my mom. We have been ordering take out from here for at least 5 years and never have gotten sick. The dishes are always labeled GF and placed in a different bag than the regular non GF food. Highly recommend. Always skeptical about eating out, but I feel safe ordering from here. Visit Date: September 29, 2019 I came here with one of my friends after she suggested it to me. Since going gluten free I've hesitated to eat Chinese, Japanese, Asian or Thai food very often but I was happy to learn that this place had a whole gluten free menu. I wanted to get something healthy but I've been terrible with eating lately and have put on maybe half the weight I lost unfortunately and it's been a long time since I had some sesame chicken so I opted for sesame chicken and it was delicious. My friend and I were the only two people sitting in the restaurant when we ate there but I give props to the owners or wait staff who were amazing about our kids. It's so iffy taking your little one to any restaurant, you're not sure how the owners are going to be towards kids, for me even though my son's gotten better than when he was 1 & 2, I still don't know if he will sit at the table the whole time we are trying to eat. The people working the restaurant showed amazing patience and didn't chide us for our kids being kids. I love hunan cottage and if it was closer to me I'd get food from there more often. read more

This used to be my families place for Chinese food when I was younger. That was like 20 years ago. Since then I have moved out and haven't eaten here, as my parents have a different spot that they frequent. I decided to order from here again remembering how the sesame chicken was always great. I ordered the sesame chicken and chicken and broccoli in garlic sauce and they were both really good. The sesame chicken was made with white-meat chicken and the serving size was really good. The chicken and broccoli had a great spice to it with the garlic sauce, and the broccoli was really crispy. I have ordered three time since revisiting and 2 out of the 3 orders were also really good. read more

I hate to say this, but this place has seriously gone down hill over the last 2 years. Food consistency and def food quality is just awful. Something as simple as chicken lo mein came in with maybe 4 pieces of really gnarly chicken and a small handful of veggies with almost no flavor at all. What was disgusting was the chicken, my God, it was so tough and grizzly - I'd NEVER order that again. Also got combo platters, again, for the increased prices, it's just bad. Not enough meat and the quality of the meat is questionable. I can't believe in Plainview there isn't one, really good Chinese take out place. Very best is still Precious in E Northport. I've been coming here for years, probably since I was in middle school with my family. And it's still super delicious and fresh! When I would come here back in the day, with my family, we would dine in and have exceptional service. Now as of recently, I do take out with my boyfriend. A few favorites of ours are the boneless ribs, green jade chicken, and general tso chicken. Everything taste very fresh and we actually know we are eating chicken and not some mystery meat. There is an extra $1 charge for all white meat, but it's absolutely worth it. The Green Jade Chicken is a personal favorite of mine. It's lightly battered chicken in a ginger sauce with ginger and string beans. The taste is very unique and delicious. They also have a ton of vegetarian dishes made of soy bean protein. It gives vegetarians and vegans a chance to have Chinese food that doesn't involve only tofu and veggies. Pick up is always fast and efficient and service is friendly! read more

I don't know if it is under the same ownership since the menu is the same but the food is better. during the Covid period my reviews have two components one is the quality of food and the other is the ease of ordering and safety and smoothness of the transaction. Hunan is 5 stars on both. When checking out a new Chinese restaurant I order Orange beef as a test. Great if done well horrible if not so easy to judge. Thick tender juicy pieces of beef filling the container. Enough for 2 meals. Just the right amount of spice without an overwhelming amount of Orange peels. Seafood hot n sour soup was excellent but be aware that it is a lot spicier than regular hot n sour. Transaction was smooth and safe. They have a little table in the lobby where the prepared orders are so you open the door and pick up your food. No human contact and was ready on time. read more

Hunan Cottage has become our 100% go-to for Chinese food. When my in-laws moved into the area, we got them hooked... and they haven't even bothered to learn about anyone else in the area; they refuse to order from anyone but Hunan Cottage. My only complaint, thus far, as been that I don't love their dumplings, but they're still pretty good. Every single time that we order from them, we feel satisfied but not bloated. The chicken dishes, which we favor, are always crispy or well steamed, depending on the dish, and the vegetables always taste like they're fairly fresh, not frozen. We've never gotten a headache, never gotten sick, never had a complaint on a single blasted thing about this place. Now, I trend towards getting the Hot and Sour soup, but their wontons are delicious, and the wonton soup is really smooth tasting. Excellent egg rolls and spring rolls, but my favorite appetizer has been their cold sesame noodles - just the right ratio of peanut butter! It's easy to fall into favorites with this place, but we do branch out, and have tried a good amount of their food... and, again, have never. ever. had a bad dish. read more

The egg roll was tasty but nothing that spectacular, but the general Tso was really good. The portion size was good for me and the chicken wasn't dry at all like some other places. Ordered orange chicken delivery. Food came fast. That's where things go south. Bland, over-breaded, no flavor, dry, stringy meat. Inedible. I went here because they say they offer gluten free options. I ordered the roast port mei fun which is my usual at any chinese place since it is GF already; it was great. Lots of flavor. I asked about the gluten free options and the man said they will make any dish GF if asked for in advance. This is not true, they will just tell you what is and is not gf. The fried rice IS NOT gluten Free but the brown rice is. Plus there is no substitutions for the lunch menu. I asked to replace the soup with a drink since I can't have either the egg roll or soup and I was told no. It has a nice sit in section and a bar. Overall I liked the food so that is the most important part I'll probably go back but I'm now more aware that they do not change any of their menu items just advise you to pick something else. It's a bright, cheery place, (unless you take exception with the fish tank), that calls out suburbia. There is acre after acre of floor space between the tables, and this much real estate would never be allowed in NYC. It's almost lonely but nice to know your conversation isn't being shared with 6 other people. There was only 1 other table occupied when we went. Our waiter was indeed attentive but not intrusive. Hard to say what a friday night might be like as I've seen the line out the door. One bone to pick is that we were given standard menus. I had to ask for the vegan ones. Once again, I ask, "Why?" Pickled cabbage, fried noodles and duck sauce are standard. Ask for mustard and hot chili oil. For our appetizer we ordered the veggie dumplings and mock calamari. They were out of the calamari and the dumplings were the usual doughy, (my speed), wrapping with a mixed greens, bok choy, and mushroom filling. Not overly bursting with flavor but a nice holder for whatever sauce you might fancy. You can see the thickness of the dough. We ordered 3 entrees: Sesame mock chicken, Orange flavored mock beef and the Buddah's Delight. Both of the mock meats were pretty standard. The chicken was a chunky style and some pieces were a bit chewier than the others. The beef was a sliced style and had a nice chew to it, just a bit softer than jerky. Both sauces were the thick gloppy-ish (I also like a little bit of glop), syrupy sauces. Both were a bit on the sweet side with the Sesame chicken being a bit less so. Sesame "chicken". The Orange Beef had a thick sauce which was more like a glaze. It had a nice hint of orange but I found the dish had none of the usual heat. I mean not one chili pepper. Orange "beef". The Buddah's Delight was also served in a thicker sauce. I have had it a few times previously and it was in an almost light broth. This was the third sweet sauce and was a bit of an overload for me but whose fault is that? The veggies were fresh and cooked perfectly, just to the point of soft yet crisp. Broccoli, mushrooms, water chestnuts, zucchini, peppers and corn. Buddah's Delight. "Chicken" "Beef" I think the Hunan Cottage is a restaurant where you'll find what I sort of call run of the mill suburban Asian food. It's middle of the road spice profile designed to not offend more than to stimulate. It's good solid food though and there's nothing wrong, in my book, with dipping your food in chili oil or mustard. It's certainly not going to blow my socks off but neither is it going to be less than good food. It's a solid place to go with mixed diners who aren't looking for a vegan meal. I did ask and was told that there is no egg or dairy in the mock meats so for my money this place is definitely on the list with an eye towards ordering some of the less sweet dishes.
