Excellent food and service! Extensive Gluten Free menu that is awesome! You can't tell it's Gluten free. Absolutely awesome.

Please see my profile for the location of my blog where you can find the complete review and pics. Hunan Cottage is your basic Chinese restaurant with a selection of mock meats on a separate menu. It's a bright, cheery place, (unless you take exception with the fish tank), that calls out suburbia. There is acre after acre of floor space between the tables, and this much real estate would never be allowed in NYC. It's almost lonely but nice to know your conversation isn't being shared with 6 other people. There was only 1 other table occupied when we went. Our waiter was indeed attentive but not intrusive. Hard to say what a friday night might be like as I've seen the line out the door. One bone to pick is that we were given standard menus. I had to ask for the vegan ones. Once again, I ask, "Why?" Pickled cabbage, fried noodles and duck sauce are standard. Ask for mustard and hot chili oil. For our appetizer we ordered the veggie dumplings and mock calamari. They were out of the calamari and the dumplings were the usual doughy, (my speed), wrapping with a mixed greens, bok choy, and mushroom filling. Not overly bursting with flavor but a nice holder for whatever sauce you might fancy. You can see the thickness of the dough. We ordered 3 entrees: Sesame mock chicken, Orange flavored mock beef and the Buddah's Delight. Both of the mock meats were pretty standard. The chicken was a chunky style and some pieces were a bit chewier than the others. The beef was a sliced style and had a nice chew to it, just a bit softer than jerky. Both sauces were the thick gloppy-ish (I also like a little bit of glop), syrupy sauces. Both were a bit on the sweet side with the Sesame chicken being a bit less so. Sesame "chicken". The Orange Beef had a thick sauce which was more like a glaze. It had a nice hint of orange but I found the dish had none of the usual heat. I mean not one chili pepper. Orange "beef". The Buddah's Delight was also served in a thicker sauce. I have had it a few times previously and it was in an almost light broth. This was the third sweet sauce and was a bit of an overload for me but whose fault is that? The veggies were fresh and cooked perfectly, just to the point of soft yet crisp. Broccoli, mushrooms, water chestnuts, zucchini, peppers and corn. Buddah's Delight. "Chicken" "Beef" I think the Hunan Cottage is a restaurant where you'll find what I sort of call run of the mill suburban Asian food. It's middle of the road spice profile designed to not offend more than to stimulate. It's good solid food though and there's nothing wrong, in my book, with dipping your food in chili oil or mustard. It's certainly not going to blow my socks off but neither is it going to be less than good food. It's a solid place to go with mixed diners who aren't looking for a vegan meal. I did ask and was told that there is no egg or dairy in the mock meats so for my money this place is definitely on the list with an eye towards ordering some of the less sweet dishes. Not bad for an appetizer, 3 mains, and 2 desserts. read more

Fast delivery, real fried rice, chicken nice and soft, sauces (garlic sauce, sweet and sour sauce) taste good, chicken wings have good flavor and nice and crispy, fries could be a little more cooked otherwise recommend for good service. Also give can of soda or I think soup maybe egg roll with each combination. Thumbs up read more

EEEHHHHHHHHHHHH... Ok, this place is pretty good. I think it would be really good if there weren't a few other options nearby for more fantastic chinese food. Low quality food. I never thought you could mess up General Tso's chicken, but alas these folks can. I've had better dumplings from the grocery store. The service is excellent and the food is delicious! We are new to Long Island from California. On top of that, I was recently diagnosed with Celiac disease so for medical reasons can no longer consume gluten. I hadn't even attempted to look for a new Chinese Restaurant since moving here because the last few times I tried with other other local restaurants, I was met with confusion when I mentioned gluten free, and when that happens you know it's a risk to eat there. I was so happy and appreciative when I called and the man that I spoke with was kind, informative, and patient in answering my questions. I was so excited! I hadn't had Chinese food in ages. The food itself did not disappoint. We ordered sesame chicken, beef and broccoli, and pork fried rice. It was all delicious! They even gave us a gluten free menu to take home for next time. I couldn't believe how helpful they were to me. I would recommend this place to anyone! Thank you for the delicious food and excellent service! We'll be back again soon! read more

A step above your average Chinese take out spot. There's a 'Chef's Specialties' section of the menu that actually makes this place feel like a restaurant with a real chef, rather than a dude that fries things and/or tosses them in a wok all day. Many of these specialties are $12 or less. Interior is straight out of the 70's, Boogie Nights style, so if you need some atmosphere with your lo mein, go elsewhere. Kudos to Dan for the hot oil tip, it def adds much needed heat to the dishes, even when marked 'spicy'. read more

Very spotty depending on the dish. The Peking duck is very good and many restaurants don't offer it. Make sure to ask them to roll it and ask for an extra sauce. Egg rolls are standard fare at best. The egg foo young is fair bc the sauce is bland and thin. Their special soups are good. It's convenient as a take out. Ask for the 'good' mustard or you will end up with the packets. read more

Excellent "normal" east coast Chinese food (unlike "weird" western, Utah Chinese food!) which was a pleasure to dine on! My celiac companion was very pleased with the many gluten free offerings and enjoyed her food. Service was great. It is very clear this restaurant is under new ownership. The dishes are very different and the workers are all new plus the photos and the pictures of the family have all been removed including the old Newsday review. Did I just use a time machine? I'm in a Chinese restaurant in 1985. Rude guy behind the counter didn't say one word as I placed my take out order. Just grunted. I have no idea how long my order will take. Started with next customer before I'd completed my transaction. The food was AWFUL. This will be the first & last time I ever go to this place. Ever since Green Melody closed in Jericho, I've been looking for a place on Long Island to replace it. Hunan Cottage is not it, but it does have a pretty extensive vegetarian menu with numerous mock meat options. It satisfies the craving and it certainly tastes good, it's just not on the same level as Green Melody was. The owner has been very pleasant in our experience but some of the waiters have a very poor grasp on English and they look at you with that "I don't really understand what you're saying" look. For example, we asked for the vegetarian menu last time we were there and when our food arrived, we received the meat versions. Why would we be asking for the meat versions after asking for the vegetarian menu? I also asked for white rice, but received brown rice (a mistake that happens quite frequently when I eat in at Chinese places for some reason). My girlfriend and I haven't been back in about 9 months, but this place isn't exactly local and I'm not convinced it's worth telling anyone to make a special trip out to just for their vegetarian options. I'd recommend VP2 in Greenwich Village over this, but if you're a Veg in the neighborhood, there's no reason not to stop in, just make sure you specify you want the vegetarian version of whatever you order. read more

This place was downright awful. I was going to give them 1 star, which I've never done, but I'll give them 2 because the ribs were good, and they get a star for having a gluten free menu. That said, the food was consistently bad. I don't really enjoy writing bad reviews, but the food and the waitress' attitude compel me to do so. Will never go back again. read more

I usually take food out or have it delivered from Hunan Cottage. In that regard, this is a very solid restaurant. Everything I order is delicious. Their portions are ample and the quality of their cooking is better than anything in the Plainview area. They deliver in a reasonable amount of time, as well. read more

This used to be the best Chinese Food in the Plainview area, but with a change in management comes a very big change in the quality of food. What a shame as it was the only Chinese Restaurant one could sit down and enjoy a meal. Now, you can still sit down, but the enjoyment is long gone. Going here for 15 years never disappointed I encourage you to eat in for a inexpensive and pleasant date nite out they offer real oldschool french service at dinner prices . not the cafeteria style you find at most chinese these days. not a perfect first date spot but definitely dinner and a chat after the movie worthy . a real sit down restaurant. read more

As a vegan with limited dining options on Long Island, I was very pleased with Hunan Cottage. My daughter and I split orders of General Tso's "chicken" and Sesame "chicken" and we were both very pleased with the food. We also enjoyed our flaming cocktail in big tub thing with decorative male hula dancers on the side - you can't get that just anywhere :-) We ate there for Christmas dinner and it was crowded but they had enough wait staff so we never felt like we were waiting too long or being ignored. Came here for Christmas dinner with my family because 1) its Jewish tradition and 2) Im gluten free and the restaurant said they can make almost anything on their menu gluten free. The restaurant was very crowded and they had too few staff working on the holiday, so the service was very slow. But, I have to say my gluten free dish was the best dish on the table that night. At first I thought they must have made a mistake because there was coating on my pineapple chicken (like with sesame chicken), but they assured me that it was GF. My family tried it first and said, "no way, its too good so it must not be gluten free." The manager saw my hesitation and came to tell me, with pride, exactly how its made... gluten free soy sauce and a cornstarch coating. SO, if you are GF and want chinese, this is the place to go! read more

One of the busiest nights of the year (that everyone knows about annually) and no one working in this restaurant has even the faintest clue how to operate a business. I've never seen so many dismissive, scatter-brained employees running around like chickens with their heads cut off in my life. Advised 35 minutes wait on a pick-up order, and then upon arrival waited at least 30 minutes more, without even an apology, a thanks for patronizing them, a bowl of noodles to tide us over... Nothing. Steer clear, folks. This place doesn't deserve your business. read more

Live in Hicksville and was looking for GOOD chinese food. Excellent pork fried rice and shrimp/eggplant with garlic sauce. I ordered take out on Saturday, ready in 25 minutes even though place was packed. We are very happy to finally find a great, cheap restaurant will definetly eat here again! read more
