Went for our wedding anniversary and I had to apologize to my wife after all was said and done. The vibe is down on it's heals, the radio station playing loudly on all ceiling speakers was really annoying, waitress was nice enough to have it turned off only for it to to come back on after a few minutes. Fried veggie dumplings were an embarrassment, soft and mushy. Fried flounder and veggies with garlic sauce had exactly 9 green beans, but fair dues there was several little pieces of fish. The so called garlic sauce was actually sweet red sauce. My wife's garlic tofu was descent and earned the 2 stars in this review. We remember the Hunan Lion several years back being an upscale solid Chinese restaurant unfortunately those times are well gone. read more

For being in a strip mall/shopping complex, their chinese take out is better than what I expected. What I love - their portions are huge! And they have an online ordering option. For the price you can easily eat one meal and take half home. They have good lunch and dinner options and for their dinner, you can easily get a side of rice and egg rolls along with the package. We left before we even got our food. We ordered the crab rangoon and a PuPu Platter for an appetizer. What we got was a blob of cream cheese inside the greasiest rangoon... gross. The PuPu had a fried shrimp that was a greasy (not even hot) blob of batter with a tiny shrimp. Disgusting. The rib looked as if it might have been Adam's left over and thrown on our plate. Seriously, that old, that gross. The beef kabob or whatever it was supposed to be tasted like rancid meat. I didn't taste anything else. We asked that our meal be cancelled. We left. Since most of Austin's excellent Asian restaurants are clustered on the north side of town, this place is both a trailblazer (it opened in the 70s!) and a standout in that it is stately and elegant. The total opposite of hole in the wall! The dining room tables are covered with white cloths. Classical music tinkles and water features quietly burble. Diners are almost hushed by the tranquility - or is that shushed? The food is pretty classic Chinese fare, with lots more fruit sauces and seafood than one may typically find. Lunch specials are decently priced, and the tablecloths still cover and water features burble on in spite of the lower cost. I dig this place - old-school with a finer-dining feel. Plácido is the BEST waiter EVER!!! He always makes our experience so much more enjoyable. He's hospitable, friendly and always remembers our order. It's so nice to go to a local restaurant and feel appreciated and remembered as a customer. This is the best Chinese restaurant in Austin by far! They even deliver and the food is always so fresh. amazing authentic chinese food, took me 6 weeks to find decent authentic non-Americanized Chinese food since moving to austin from dc and nj. The hot and sour soup was best i ever had, spicy but also lovedly hint of sesame. the flavor of ginger basil was amazing, slightly spicy but in a light brown sauce that again was not dumbed down with past or sugar. I know the phrase 'tacky yet refined' belongs to Hooters, but it really describes Human Lion down to a T. The dining area is filled with Christmas lights, lanterns, and buddha statues next to fish tanks. But, the cuisine is a bit more refined. My boyfriend and I are always satisfied leaving Hunan. Whether it's New Years or a rainy Sunday, we do enjoy some hearty Chinese food occasionally. I often order steamed chicken and vegetables to avoid the msg headache. Do I recommend Hunan? Yes! Pretty good Chinese food overall. General Tso is a go-to. Tough to find solid Chinese in South Austin and we are never disappointed with Hunan Lion. Its like they took won tons and put it in water and served it to her. person 2 - the dish wasn't spicy person 2 & 3 both agree the Hot Sour soup wasn't Hot and Sour it was more SWEET & SOUR very thick and like they used to much cornstarch to thicken it person 3 - Chicken chow mien looked like Onion, cabbage & CHUNKS of chicken with no Chow mien noodles and barely any soy beans it was very bland. First, the best experience we had was the waiter. He was outstanding and was there every time we needed anything. He was also funny with a good sense of humor and made our dinner pleasant. I am sorry that I did not like my food. I had Peking duck. It was overcooked and came out dry and quite overcooked. It was mostly without taste. The portions were some of the smallest that I remember at a Chinese restaurant. I was given fried rice with my duck at no extra charge. Also shared a pupu platter which was diminutive, compared to what I would expect. My friend had orange chicken. It was good but did not have much ginger and the orange was overcooked. The rest of it was all right. The prices did not reflect the small portions that were received. We had to buy food elsewhere, to keep from being hungry in an hour. read more

As a transplant from NYC, I hesitated to eat Chinese food here in Austin. We used to travel into China town for the good stuff. Hunan Lion is really great Chinese American style food. Even my Filo family approved when they visited. Recently I had the lettuce wraps and spare ribs but in the past I've tried their LoMein, chicken and veggies, fried rice and it's all yummy. This isn't your standard Chinese restaurant with bland, American-ized food and questionable service. I came here with my roommate awhile back, after enduring months and months of her talking about how great it was. I usually question her recommendations, but Hunan Lion lived up to her hype. We were seated almost immediately, and aside from one other table, it was just us. We were there rather late, just before closing, but you wouldn't have known it judging from the attention we received from the waitress. If I hadn't known better, I would have thought I was in a five-star restaurant with a dedicated concierge/waitstaff. Her service skills were just that good. And so was the food. I knew that it was connected to the owner of Chinatown on W. 5th, and since I loved the seafood hot pot at Chinatown, I stuck with what I knew. I also ordered some green tea, egg rolls and potstickers to split with the roomie. Everything was perfection, and was delivered to our table rather quickly (most likely due to the lateness of our visit). The hot pot was actually better than Chinatown's, which, as subsequent visits suggest, seems to have lost its touch for quality recently. Hunan Lion became a favorite that night, and I can't wait to go back. read more

My wife and I enjoy this style of cuisine and I must say seeing it only had 3 1/2 stars almost kept me away. I am glad, as I usually am, that my wife convinced me to try it. We live in such a small town sandwiched in between two of the biggest cities in Texas. The closest Chinese or Asian food place is over 30 minutes away. My wife was in the area and "we" decided to get take out from this place. Oh My God, I am so glad "I" decided to get food from there. I first need to mention the pork fried rice. I will venture to say this is the best I have found so far in Austin or San Antonio. We love the pink pork fried rice and hadn't found it anywhere. I consider myself a Mongolian beef aficionado and this version is very tasty and I love how it is very flavorful and not oily. The dumplings and the Lovers chicken is a must try. I will have to say we loved the flavor of all the food and the chow mien had such a depth of flavor. My five year old is actually a connoisseur of all types of fried rice and when she asks for seconds it is a big kudo. Our family will definitely make the drive out there again. We highly recommend it. The only reason I gave it 4 stars was because I was unable to be there and dine-in and also because I was unable to try even more food. read more
