Dined inside at Hunan Lion on a Saturday for lunch. Received really good service! A lot of vegetarian options and a good lunch special. The gentlemen who seated us and took our order was friendly and patient. He explained all of the vegetarian options and had no issues or attitude making substitutes. The hunan lion sauce was our favorite of the dishes we order. All of the plates ordered came out fast (within ten minutes), were correctly made, and tasted great. It was a good, solid meal with exactly what I was expecting. Pretty standard fare, but all done very well and with very friendly service. The dinner portions are large and fairly priced. I HAVE FOUND MY AUSTIN CHINESE FOOD PLACE!!!! I've only ever gotten takeout here, having found it in the pandemic. However, it's perfect every time. I get (exclusively) the Honey Crispy Chicken with peas and carrots and it is sooooo good, puts the other dishes to shame. It comes with a legit to-go box FILLED with white rice, more than I could eat in a month. Huge portions, so I always have plenty for lunch the next day or my husband and I share a meal and both are satisfied. The appetizers are good too. The steamed pork dumplings are very large and come with a tangy and delicious dipping sauce. The crab puffs (rangoons) aren't very crabby but are very yummy regardless. Can't go wrong with fried dough and cream cheese, really. My husband likes a lot of their fried beef dishes too. Honestly, their sauces make all of their dishes sing. We came to a bit too late. We feel so bad but they gave us great service. Didn't make us feel rushed or were rude at all. My son was so hungry. I used to bring my other kiddos when they were babies. Now they are 16 and 12. They will be so happy to come. The food was did not disappoint. We ordered Orange Chicken and combo Lo Mein. It was delicious and tasted homemade for sure. The restaurant looks so nice after the remodel. They had some relaxing music that made it so chill. My son who is 8 said to give them a 5 star review. He said it was great and yummy. Hunan Lion could be the best chinese food in Austin hands down. There is a happy hour every day (including weekends) of lunch specials (ranging from $8 - $8.50) with large food portions and plenty of food to share with your other. I am a huge fan of their hot sour soup, crab cheese puffs, and their decor in Hunan Lion. The service is spot on and you are always taken care of even when the place is jumping. I see a lot of folks order take out here whenever I dine in and packaging and portions look huge as most of the times I see stacks of containers being balanced in a plastic bag. Great spot for large groups as well as there is a long seating area of booths on the far left side of the dining room. There is also a small nook with a view of fish swimming around in a tank that can hold about 6 people. The bar in the back past the dining area also looks like a good spot to chill, drink sake or beer, and watch some tv if you are up to it. Always easy parking in front and on the sides of Hunan Lion. Ok, so had an urge for soup since it was a cold day so I came in hoping for some real Chinese House Noodle soup with my favorite Edamame the waiter was very attentive and spark an interest in making me happy making sure I was definitely pleased. The soup was very hot with bursting flavors but a tad salty. I truly loved the soup it seemed to have a mix of chicken pork and beef delicious with vegtables. I then asked the waiter for hot Sake he brought me a small container with small cup to drink chinese style. At this time I was so full be warned it is large portions very reasonable in prices so I was amazed at how full I was. I recommend the House Noodle soup it is very good and I will come back again to try other dishes. How happy I was when I left. Parking is very easy and very eclectic decor. I LOVE this place. Growing up in Austin, I have been coming here for over 20 years and it never fails to disappoint. It's comforting that with all the changes in Austin, this place is still in its original location and prettying intact to what I remember from my childhood. It's a very nice Chinese restaurant. Even though it's changed ownership through the years, you wouldn't know there difference in the quality of the food and ambiance of the restaurant. It looks the same from my childhood, but it's not dated and you would never know that it's been around that long. The portions are very large, the food is delicious, and the prices are reasonable. I love this place and am always happy that, even though it may be a couple of years between my visits, the quality of the food and friendliness of the staff never changes. read more

The service for dining in is okay, they check on you quite consistently but sometimes get your order a bit mixed up. If you're dining in you have to try the hot tea! The interior is dated, but I think it adds to the experience. Lots of little knick knacks and they have a fish tank! It feels very cozy and welcoming. Some of my favorite are the pickled cucumber (spicy and delicious) along with the Lover's Chicken and Mongolian Beef and Mongolian Pork. I've been going here for years, dine in or take out. I was at work last night, was craving some Asian food for dinner, so I downloaded the DoorDash app and thought it'd be a good idea to order from a place I'm familiar with. I ordered beef and broccoli, egg drop soup, a veggie spring roll and fried rice. What I received was some type of sesame gel covered chicken with 2 small pieces of broccoli... just the chicken and the broccoli. Tasted awful, so I left it. There was a shrimp spring roll (I ordered veggie). The soup was flipped over and had spilled out, filling the bottom of the to-go bag. Not very well packed, or a delivery driver in a hurry.. or both. The only thing they got right was the fried rice, but that was ridiculously dry, so I didn't eat that. The most annoying part of the whole thing, there were no utensils. I could've just gone Neanderthal and eaten it with my hands, but they didn't include napkins either, so that option was out. The worst delivery experience I've ever had... maybe there should be some type of award for that. All of this greatness cost around $30. This is an update to one of my earliest Yelp reviews, which I had written right after Hunan Lion had changed owners, and I was pretty annoyed the best sesame chicken in Austin was no more. Who would ever use the phrase "Pod People" in a review? So exactly eight years later I'm in the neighborhood thinking, "Oh why not?" The interior hasn't changed at all, and there were more people picking up their orders than dining in. I think what you're getting here is solid Anglo-Chinese fare, and there's always a time & place for that. The online menu seems a little confusing, but dining-in is pretty straightforward - tell the server what you want and you'll get it quickly & efficiently. No complaints about the beef & broccoli or green beans, and the $21 seemed fair to me. I didn't want to risk getting all pissy again by ordering sesame chicken. And if you're more inclined to contemporary fast casual, there's a Pei Wei around the corner. But for the classic Chinese strip mall experience, Hunan Lion still stands among the pride. read more

Best Chinese takeout I've had since moving to Austin from NYC. Is super authentic? No, but for American Chinese food it's cheap, fast and delicious. I really enjoyed the Mongolian beef, house noodle soup, and honey pepper steak. Only reason I didn't give them 5 stars is because the pu pu platter has a few items that were overdone (the chicken wing and rib). Probably the worst food I've had in Austin. We ordered a number of items - starters, beef, chicken noodles etc. Nothing had any flavours. Unless you count oil and cardboard as flavours. Went for our wedding anniversary and I had to apologize to my wife after all was said and done. The vibe is down on it's heals, the radio station playing loudly on all ceiling speakers was really annoying, waitress was nice enough to have it turned off only for it to to come back on after a few minutes. Fried veggie dumplings were an embarrassment, soft and mushy. Fried flounder and veggies with garlic sauce had exactly 9 green beans, but fair dues there was several little pieces of fish. The so called garlic sauce was actually sweet red sauce. My wife's garlic tofu was descent and earned the 2 stars in this review. We remember the Hunan Lion several years back being an upscale solid Chinese restaurant unfortunately those times are well gone. read more
