This makes me so sad to write this review. First when the delivery man showed up there was a mix up when I had given my card number over the phone to pay for my meal apparently the person taking the order forgot to run it? Or pushed cash instead? So the man just had me write my card info on a piece of paper to take back. No problem. As I was eating my vegetarian eggroll and egg drop soup I thought about what an amazing review I would write them because it is so delicious. But.... then I opened my entree and noticed that instead of the sesame tofu I had ordered... there was sesame chicken... so I called to let them know and (horribly) right away the woman who answered turned on me and became defensive and told me I'd have to pay for a whole other entree if I wanted tofu. She told me that I ordered incorrectly and had said chicken (even though she wasn't the one I had spoken to). I told her that I definitely ordered tofu because I'm a vegetarian and looked at their menu to make sure they had tofu. She then (without asking if I could hold) put the phone down and spoke to two other people about it (I could hear the whole conversation!!!!!!!!). The person who had taken my order lied and said I definitely said chicken... I was so disappointed. ... then at the end she said we will bring you tofu for free only this time but the next time you mess up your own order you will have to pay. Then I quickly tried to explain again I would never have ordered chicken, because I'm a vegetarian. ... she cut me off to say that I would have to return the chicken because I was asking for a new entree. And of course this is okay with me because I...don't...eat...meat... So for me this was very sad because I thought the food was 4 stars but the customer service was a ZERO so I settled for a 2. I thought a restaurant that offers so many vegetarian options would be more used to writing down vegetarian orders. I'm very upset right now because I've never had an experience like this and don't know how to feel about how rude and mean this woman was to me... very disappointed. My 100th Yelp Review- woo hoo!! I am one very picky Chinese food eater. There was a placed in North Austin that I absolutely loved but they closed down a year ago now. Since then, I have yet to find a place that compared. That is until I stopped into Hunan Lion on Saturday. As soon as we walked in, we were warmly greeted and taken to a table. As we were walking to our table, another employee(just walking through the restaurant) said hello and asked how we were doing. It was very nice. When we sat down I was impressed with the extensive menu. They even have edamame on the menu!! I asked our waitress if they could make it spicy and she said of course! Perfect! I ordered the beef with broccoli and the hubby ordered Kung Pao chicken. Both were great. The broccoli was perfectly cooked and the sauce was divine. The beef wasn't my favorite, but definitely not bad. I think next time, I'll stick with chicken though. The veggie roll was perfectly crunchy on the outside, and piping hot on the inside. The best part was the egg drop soup, for sure! So many Chinese restaurants make their egg drop soup with chives, corn, veggies, etc. That's not how it should be. It's EGG drop soup, so it should just be the broth and egg. Hunan Lion got the recipe down, perfectly!!! This place is delicious and I can't wait to go back. read more

The chefs and staff from ChinaTown Westlake are here! I am so happy that we have followed them to Hunan Lion so we can still eat up some of the tastiest Chinese food in Austin - again. We have been enjoying the chef's food/dishes since the mid 90s so the location and name may have changed, but the food is still suberb and the dishes remain the same. My family's favorite dishes are: The Little Lamb, Happy Family, Kung Pao Chicken, Buddha's Delight, Mala Duck, Chicken w/ Green Veggies, Beef w/ Mixed Veggies, and Sweet & Sour Pork. You can ask to make any dish spicy and it is worth it. Try the Chicken Lettuce Wraps App as a meal - it is a great size for a healthier option. Hot & Sour Soup is super yummy and has a lil kick of spice! My all time fav! Management is run by Eddie Chow who was previously located at Chinatown Westlake. If he is on site when you arrive, he will greet you (and he is funny!) We are super excited to have our little taste of heaven back in Austin and cannot wait to tell our friends! read more

I got delivery from here on a cold rainy night and it was surprisingly quick! A few cons though -website said it couldn't deliver to my address, no problem, placed my order over the phone, but then I was charged like $5 more than what online was quoting me -the food is WAY too sweet for my taste, I ordered my food extra spicy and it just felt like sugary syrup... I don't know if I could/would recommend this place, but our options for Chinese takeaway are pretty limited in the 78704. Probably my favorite Chinese restaurant in all of Austin! The last time I visited Hunan Lion after a trip to the green belt, our party of 5 ordered enough food for a small army (including, but not limited to, 5 egg rolls, 5 soups, an order of Crab Puffs, 3 full entrees, noodles, rice, and a whole DUCK!), all for under $100 including tip. The food arrived at a steady pace and was all super tasty. The only thing I didn't love was the wrap for the Peking Duck, but the duck itself was delicious. Service and food were awful. Atmosphere was okay. It wasn't crowded, and by that I mean at 7pm on Sunday evening, there was only one other couple in the entire restaurant. (That should've warned us to go somewhere else, but we didn't.) We ordered our drinks (tea and Dr. Pepper). And then we ordered the following: Cucumber Salad Combo Dinner: Twice cooked pork, egg roll, steamed rice, and hot and sour soup Combo Dinner: Garlic chicken, egg roll, steamed rice and hot and sour soup. I should give you a little background before I go further. I love Chinese food. I highly recommend First Wok if you're down south. There are a lot of other more expensive and amazing restaurants in town - many up north - but First Wok is usually where we always go. Today we decided to try something new. I wish we wouldn't have. We got the cucumber salad. It was okay, but not very good. We didn't think much of it, ate a few bites and moved on. We got our soup. I hated it. I've had hot and sour soup from many places before, and it seems like they used a different broth than most other places. I think most places use a chicken broth? This almost tasted like really spice vegetable soup with all the hot and sour soup ingredients. My boyfriend said it was pretty good (though super spicy), so again, we didn't say anything. Then we got our egg rolls (which were very small), and I thought mine was okay, but Boyfriend hated his. So at this point we were both not impressed at all, and we're both still hungry. Then we got the main meals. They were terrible. Neither of us could eat it. I mean TERRIBLE. The chicken dish was very bland, had no flavor whatsoever, and didn't seem to be cooked right. The pork dish was about the same. The flavor almost was sour and something was just off. I'm not sure what it was, it was just not good at all. I've never in my life asked for my money back in a restaurant. In fact, I can't even think of a time when I asked for a dish to be returned to the kitchen because something was wrong. Maybe we hit a bad night, I don't know. I asked if we could just pay for our drinks and go because nothing was good. They tried to charge us over $15.05 for what we ate - one cup of soup and one egg roll. I left mad and hungry after paying $15 for a dinner I didn't eat. After driving for about a block, I went back because, well, let's face it. That's absolutely ridiculous. I went back and told them that I wasn't going to pay that amount for terrible food, and they told me I had to wait in the lobby until the manager comes. Ten minutes later the manager arrived, and we went through the same argument I had been having for the previous 30 minutes, which included deciding whether or not one bite of an egg roll counts as eating the whole thing or not. Seriously. We eventually came to some kind of agreement, if you want to call it that. I ended up paying about $7 for almost an hour of my time and an egg roll and a cup of soup, which is fine but not worth my time. The combo meals were priced at $7 and some change. I have no idea how they initially came out with $15.05 after not eating anything. I would never ever ever recommend anyone going here. It was the worst restaurant experience I've ever had in Austin, and I've lived here for over 5 years now. We will never come back to this restaurant. read more

I've always been of the ilk that Hunan Lion is fine. It's a run of the mill Americanized Chinese food shop that makes a decent sesame shrimp and has a decent lunch special ($6.50 for sesame shrimp, steamed rice, soup and two crab rangoons). I hadn't been in a while and today when we walked in, I noticed they'd spruced the place up a bit. I can't put my finger on it, but it's a little different. The menu does say that all entrees include a crap puff, which was interesting (amazingly, it tasted just like a crab rangoon, soooo, yeah). My shrimp came out lukewarm at best, and the broccoli was flat out soggy. My friend's chicken in black bean sauce wasn't spicy at all, and was filled with green peppers. Blech. Both of us picked out all of the green stuff in our meals like a pair of 5 year olds. In the end, I was sorely disappointed with this spruced-up version of Hunan Lion and won't be back any time soon. read more

I've ordered from here twice and have not been disappointed yet! I order the Egg Drop Soup [although I didn't get the little fried pieces :/ ] and it is yummy! We came here because the restaurant we wanted to go to was too crowded on a Friday night. Hunan Lion was nearly empty. The restaurant was nice and the hostess and waiter were great. Very attentive. The food was good, especially the firecracker prawns that my husband ordered. I got the pan fried noodles, they were OK. They let you request any dishes you'd like even if they are not on the menu and that is nice if you have a particular craving! My husband is not Chinese and he really enjoyed the food. I am Chinese and grew up eating Chinese food. I didn't feel like the food I ordered was very authentic, pretty much what you would expect from a Chinese food restaurant outside of a Chinatown. Hunan Lion has become our go-to place for Chinese takeout. My husband and I shopped around considerably before committing to Hunan Lion, and were surprised by the lack of decent Chinese food options outside of the north side of town. Is this place authentic? Nah. But it cooks up some damn good Americanized Chinese food at reasonable prices, you can make most of their dishes into dinner combos with soup and egg roll, they deliver, and their staff are super nice. They've even called back several times to confirm things with my order - when has that ever happened before??? Rumor has it that the food here is much better than it was in recent years, since the chef from the Chinatown in Westlake moved over recently. The shrimp in the Kung pao is fresh but sauce way too thick & salty. The sweet & sour pork was too dry and sauce too salty. The waitress keep getting our orders mixed up with the next table but did not even bother apologizing. When the entrees came out wrong again after getting our appetizers wrong, my husband touched the chicken on the dish with his hands, wondering what it was and I called the waitress to tell her both our orders were wrong, she just too the food right to the next table. Went to Hunan again! My favorite of all times..ordered the combo lomien, general tsao, fried rice and fried cream puffs. First time the food tasted like it had been kept warm by a wet pan since the food lacked its bright crisp flavor. I called and spoke to Olivia and she said they have a new cook. Olivia didn't offer a discount but did apologize. I told her I'd give them one more chance..Olivia said to taste the food before I'd leave the premises. I've been ordering from this place since it opened way back then. They were once a 5 star rating. Hopefully they can get it back to where it was once at, a 5 star. It's like a loss of an old friend...what bothered me the most is Olivia didn't take care of me, her old loyal customer. Usually a good business will cut you some slack on bad food you bought but Olivia didn't make any offer or compensation for the $33.56 I just spent. I'm with Jaye on this one. It's a solid, if unremarkable, place for lunch. The sesame shrimp and the walnut shrimp are real tasty. Also, they'll pretty much arrange any menu item around for you. OMG....best Chinese food in Austin, hands-down. It isn't even close. Hell, I'll expand it to all of Texas--best Chinese I've had in the whole state. The food is A+++++++. So good. If you're from New York, like I am, you know good Chinese food and this is it. The prices are great too. Dinner with alcohol for me and the husband runs around $20 before tip. The one ding I have on Hunan Lion is the restaurant itself. God-awful. Depressing paneling on the walls, poor lighting, outdated decor....you know what I'm talking about! Two friends and I ordered delivery from Hunan Lion yesterday. We ordered one appetizer, three entrees, and one side. It took almost TWO HOURS to arrive. We called after an hour asking for an update on the order, and they said it had left the restaurant and was en route. 30 minutes later, the food had still not arrived. We called again and they told us, again, that it was en route. When it finally arrived, most of it was less than mediocre. We gave this place 2 chances. The first time everything tasted horrible. The 2nd time, everything was meh. The veggie lo mein was spaghetti noodles slathered in soy sauce. It was too salty, greasy, and half the veggies weren't even cooked. The husband's sweet & sour chicken looked like terds and they put the sauce on the side. Best Chinese food I have ever had...outside of NYC! I have had dinner and the restaurant and done take out, either way, it is delicious. And when I do takeout, the service is incredible. You can walk through the restaurant or go around to the left side and enter a separate "Take Out" door that brings you to a private back bar which isn't a bar scene but more of a service station for takeout and wait staff to fill drinks. They have a giant TV with a game always on in case you get there early. At any rate, this place has excellent food that feels sort of healthy compared to many other good tasting Chinese restaurants.
