I have been to Chinese restaurants around the world over the last 40 years or so. Hunan Taste is the best I have ever come across. How lucky am I to live so close to one of the great Chinese restaurants in the world? I could list the dishes to order but my suggestion is to ask the waiter to bring you soup, some appetizers and some main dishes after you guide him to what you like. You will not be disappointed in anything that they put in front of you. The restaurant has a full bar and they are always cleaning so it is 100% clean at all times. Where do I even begin?? Went in to pick up my order where an older man sitting in the corner of the room looked pissed and asked me why I was there. When I finished paying, he threw my credit card on the table in front of me (the food is way overpriced btw). The egg rolls were so greasy there was oil literally spilling out of them. The General Taos chicken was also incredibly greasy and mostly flavorless. This is by far THE WORST (and most expensive) Chinese restaurant I have ever eaten at. Worst place EVER! The waitstaff here are the Rudest people I have ever encountered in my life. I can't even articulate how rude they were. Maiter D was so rude and nasty. Talks down to most people. Hey Calvin I got delivery couple of nights ago, I have to say the food looked and tasted as if it was NOT from Hunan, General Tso was off color and off taste, the lo mein was without any pork ( as ordered )the color of the wonton soup was almost a brown color and the ribs was basically all bone and no meat, I've been eating there for 25 years plus, I rated this place the best Chinese food on Long Island someone in your kitchen is dropping the ball bro you need to get in there And handle it, I have to say I was very disappointed read more

My family and I have been going and ordering for years, and like others, are done! I ordered food at 545pm and was told 1hour delivery. (Was charged immediately following the call) I called back at 715pm to be told "on the way" I called back at 745pm to be told "5-10minutes and it was never on the way" I called back at 810pm and was asked to give them the order again!!! The food at Hunan Taste is just about the best Chinese food we have eaten in our area. Nice selections of appetizers, drinks and mains. Good size portions. The reason they don't get five stars is the abrupt waitstaff, starting with the rude gentleman who checks you in. They appear annoyed that they have to take your order and answer questions or refill a drink. They weren't even that busy! What a horrible experience we had trying to get into this place and then we tried to order for delivery. They are nasty and rude in person and on the phone. I have been frequenting this place for years. their food is good, not great but it's the only full Chinese restaurant around this area. I have given them business for the last time! the staff and management are extremely rude and in fact nasty at times. They should be very caring and accomodating to their supportive "locals" that have kept them open ! Instead, try to call to place an order. They yell at you. I always loved this restaurant, but lately the food has been disappointing. My family ordered a large amount the other night for take out and each one of us was not happy with our meal. Fresh food always, not too greasy like a lot of Chinese can be, so happy they deliver to Port Washington. Can be pricey but it's the best Chinese food within the area. We ordered Bhudda's delight, Mooshoo Pork, Chicken with Cashews, and Shrimp fried Rice. Really the best brown sauce I've ever had. The pork was tender and juicy. The Chicken dish was roasty and suacey and the veggies were perfectly al dente. The service was top notch. They wrapped the Pancakes for us! They have several different sizes of silverware. Greeted quickly, whisk to a table, BOOM a menu appeared, and so did a waiter. They weren't super busy but had lots of staff. Decided on a #18, beef with broccoli and it was well done. These kinds of dishes can get salty but not this one. While not spicy hot it was oven hot. Heads up! No one seemed to be in a rush to get me out of there and I took my time. Maybe I'm biased...I'm not native Chinese, and didn't grow up with it in my house, but I did grow up with a very close friend who was. With him, I have eaten authentic Chinese many, many times. So when I look to eat chinese, I want very authentic. This place is not it. It's ok, but it's subdued. It's expensive also. The decor is very nice. My family and I have been dining at Hunan for over 15 years. With out a doubt it is the best Chinese Food we have ever had. Some of my family members live in Westchester, NY and have no problem making the drive to Long Island just for dinner at Hunan. Hunan Taste is an interesting joint. The experience begins when you hand your keys to the valet in the parking lot who doesn't hand you a ticket but somehow remembers the car you came in when you come out again. The place has a lot of tables and they turn over pretty fast. However, there isn't a great deal of space to either sit or stand while you wait for that to happen so depending on your arrival time. That might leave you standing outside waiting for your turn. Once you're inside you're in better shape. The wait staff are all pleasant and helpful. The dining room is very clean and smells great. Tables are well spaced and not jammed together. It is a bit noisy so it can be a challenge to have a conversation. We ordered an appetizer (the toast and a few egg rolls) and a few entrees (sea bass, beef with broccoli) as well as fried rice. The beef was actually exceptional in terms of the flavor and it tasted VERY fresh and well prepared. If you like it medium you were good and if you prefer it well you weren't offended either. The sauce was bordering on amazing. The sea bass was a bit less spectacular and didn't seem very flavorful unless you made sure to scoop it up with some scallions. The roast pork fried rice was good (but not the best I've tasted). The egg rolls are very sizable and they were piping hot when they arrived. It is really apparent that this place makes things fresh and despite that, I never waited for an unreasonable amount of time to receive my food. I also ordered a cocktail from the bar which is right near the front of the dining room and still doesn't really inhibit traffic in the space. I give them credit for doing a lot with a relatively NOT large space. Food deserves more than 3 stars which I gave here. The waiting space detracts a bit as does the fact that their restrooms appear to have zero insulation whatsoever. It may have been a few degrees colder (we dined here in November) than the outside steps in the parking lot. The menu isn't exactly wildly diverse either but that could also help them to prepare food fresh so take that as a plus or as a minus to your preference. I wouldn't rule out a return trip here. The owner was very gracious when I checked in and also when I was leaving. That is a huge asset to small businesses. If I could give them an additional half star for that alone I would. The only thing taking this down from 4 to 3 stars is that restroom issue and the sea bass being a bit of a dud. PS -- their hot mustard was easily the hottest mustard I've consumed from any Chinese restaurant in the history of my lifetime. A solid 3.5 stars. This type of Chinese restaurant doesn't exist anymore as a throwback to the cuisine of the 70's that dominated the Chinese food scene. Fried noodles in duck sauce and hot mustard, egg drop soup, moo shu pork and other menu items from my childhood brought me back to the days when THIS was Chinese food and not the varied cuisine of each province we find all over NYC these days. Decor was clean and this place was REALLY popular with the locals on a Friday. A little worried that we were the only Asians in the place other than staff but people I trust recommended I try this place. Crispy spicy beef with carrots and celery brought me back to my childhood, General Tso's chicken was crispy and in a nice thin tangy sauce (not the gloppy mess most are accustomed to) and Peking Duck was good (not real Peking Duck but close enough). Hunan Taste used to be our "go-to" for family dinners and out of town guests, but we won't be dining there again.
