Poor co-worker. We'll call her Terri. Terri said she was going to Hungry Hound for lunch. O...k...... As an office, we have almost collectively agreed to avoid this little pit of substandard cuisine and shoddy service; but there's limited options near Lafayette and Martin, so I figured Terri wanted to roll the dice. So, of course she came back, settled into her seat and soon after, offered me half of her "tuna melt." Knowing how much Terri loves tuna melts, I was taken aback. I stopped typing to peek over our cubicle wall and gasped in disbelief. Her "tuna melt" was white bread, two slabs of fresh-from-the-fridge cheddar, so-thick-they-could-have-been-beefsteak tomatoes and 1/4 head of lettuce. No melt. No heat. No grill. No way Hungry Hound! To top that off, the tuna tasted a lil rancid, or maybe there was a lil bit o' dolphin in that catch, but it wasn't kosher. The sandwich didn't even look appetizing had one wanted a cold tuna sandwich. I mean I guess mistakes happen and the "melt" aspect could have gotten lost in translation, but when you paid $8 and don't even have a soda, shake, fries or chips to ease the pain; you naturally feel a little bitter. Hate to say "I told you so!", but I advised her that this place is a money trap. They're only in business due to their proximity to Santa Clara Univ. And those students can only afford their prices because mommy and daddy give them food money. Trust me, SJSU money would run out real quick in Money Hungry Hound. Besides this event, Hungry Hound in general has the worst customer service in Santa Clara. It's a good thing they stopped taking plastic because God forbid you were 40 cent shy of their $7/$8 dollar minimum or they'd be ready to throw grease in your eye. I think people are more loyal to the convenience of this place as opposed to the actual consistency of service. They are so cheap that they charged me extra for onions on something once that didn't come with onions. Guess they saved me from bad breath at least. One star for that....... In conclusion: thumbs up to family business, but thumbs down to their genetic predisposition to frowny faces, bad attitudes, and a double dose of miserly! read more

Now this is a burger!! It was hot off the grill and cooked to perfection! And huge, not like the tiny Kirk's burger for the same price. The fries were excellet too. A big basket, nice and crisp on the outside, tender inside. They have a wide variety of beverages. Soda, juice, milk, milkshakes, root beer floats, and beer! Lots of beer on tap too and not just the usual....they had Stella Artois, Sierra Nevada, Heineken, Fat Tire, and all kinds of beer in bottles. Corona for $1.99?? No way?! Huh. I dont even know where to start. I've reviewed this place before and actually gave them an ok review, but after what happened today I feel that it is my obligation to society to edit it. My boyfriend went to the Hungry Hound today for lunch like we have several times in the past. Usually, we are able excuse the less than average food, and horrid customer service because there is always a ton of people waiting in line. But not today. He and I were THE ONLY PEOPLE IN THE ENTIRE RESTAURANT (other than the rude women and the scowling man behind the counter). Couple of problems: 1) No air conditioning. seriously. its 95 degrees outside and you cant even provide a fan to stop your customers from dropping dead?! 2) The water they provide in the white jug on the counter looks and smells like water they either pulled out of the toilet, or grabbed from some swamp. again, its 95 degrees, the least you could do is offer drinkable water to people (especially since refills on soda are not free) 3) They only take cash. Obviously I knew that since I had been there before but it annoys me every time. Now on to the food... 4) I ordered a burger, fries and onion rings-- $10.50. Now I dont have a problem paying that much, if the food I receive (and the service, for that matter) is worth it. The problem is that it is definitely not worth it! 5) Like I already said, my bf and I were the only people there, and all I ordered was a burger, fries and onion rings. How long did we wait? About 15 minutes. No AC, no water, and a 20 minute wait? Come on. 6) Ok, so I ordered a burger right? I HATE tomatoes so I made sure that I told the women NO NO NO NO NO NO NO tomatoes. What was on my burger? Tomatoes. Also, I asked for 'light' mayo. What was on my burger? The entire contents of of their monster mayo jar. oh, and on top of that, after picking/scraping all the extra crap off, the burger wasn't even good. It was dense, hard, flavorless, greasy, and quite honestly tasted like a cinder block. And the bread it was on was awful. 7) I open up my fries and take a bite. Soggy, flavorless, greasy (not in a good way) and not in the least bit crispy or even brown. How disappointing. So, after 20 minutes, and $10.50 in their rude little stingy hands, burger is going in the garbage along with the fries. Once again, I preface my review with this disclaimer: If you are looking for a place like Chez Panisse, look somewhere else. This is a hamburger shop, in a tiny plaza, across the street from a major party university. It is going to be loud, and it will be crowded during meal hours. If you don't like that, all I can say is take a leap of faith. I suggest taking that leap because there is a reason it is always crowded. There are no frills and no tricks about their food. It is greasy, it is large, and it is meaty. At least, that's what their main menu is like. Specialty items are a bit more lax in the "punch you in the mouth" department. Then again, we didn't exactly come here for a turkey burger, did we? My personal recommendation is the gyro. Veggie-lovers can go for the falafel; it is just as good. Burgers tend to be the lowest priced items, followed by the gyro/falafel, but the gyro is basically one large meal. Since I'm getting older, I guess it is 1.5 and soon to be 2 meals. I gave it 4 stars (with 3/4 stars for the food and 1/1 for the location). The only reason I gave it 3 instead of 4 is the amount of grease, etc. But I am really reaching for a reason to downgrade. Hungry Mound (of Poo) Tonight was my second visit to the Hungry Hound and I was hopeful FIRST TIME: I had a grilled cheese and you really can't go wrong with that. I also really liked that it is close, inexpensive, and they will serve you a root beer in a frosty beer mug if you ask. THIS TIME: The man behind the counter was rude. The "chicken cheese steak" was chunks of chicken with cheese, and I am from Philly area - that is no cheese steak. Nothing tasted like it had any seasoning, not the fries, the onion rings, the ketchup or the mustard. It was just plain crappy tonight. Maybe they were having an off night. I think I heard the guy behind the counter yell "f&$k you!" to a co-worker, possibly his wife, and they took it out on my food. This is a pretty simplified quick eats kinda place. Not the cleanest in the world, but a section of seating includes picnic table like benched seating that fits well with the overall casual dive restaurant atmosphere. The burgers are their main thing, and if you like a lot of toppings but don't like the over-price higher-end burger joints like Red Robin, this place rocks. I had an onion, bacon, chilli, cheese burger and it was awesome. It doesn't come with sides unless you ask for them separately, which is perfect by me since I crave the burger but rarely the fries. That and a drink cost $7.95. A regular cheese burger (pretty decent size too) and a drink will cost about $5.90. Not bad at all considering the size of the burger. Having been a student at SCU, and even living in the Park Centrals behind it, I had never ventured into Hungry Hound before. Tetsu N. and I were hungry, and on our way to Frozo's, but decided to stop in Hungry Hound first for a quick bite. I just got a simple cheeseburger. Nothing too fancy about it, but it was definitely better than going to a fast-food joint. Otherwise, just another burger. I noticed that fallafels and gyros were on the menu, as were hot dogs and a few other items. But for a cheeseburger and a soda, it was under $6, so can't complain too much about it. Flor D. was telling me later that she thought it was disgusting to look up at the ceiling and to see all the grease that has accumulated up there, so make sure not to look up, and I guess it would be OK... :D Besides, after getting our food, we just sat outside, so no accumulated grease to see outside. read more

My family and I stopped by for an early lunch shortly before they opened and the owners (a husband-wife team) were nothing short of wonderful. We called in our order and they were done very quickly. While paying for our order, the wife/cashier wished me a happy Mother's Day and her husband, who was preparing our food, even peeked out of the kitchen just to say hi. Talk about friendly customer service! My kids were with me, and as we were leaving, the husband surprisingly stopped us and handed me and my kids free ice cream from their freezer! Then just as we were about to exit, he ran to us and handed me a Twix ice cream bar and told me to give it to my husband! Oh my gosh, how sweet and such a generous gesture from a couple running a Mom and Pop restaurant! Lastly, we ordered a turkey melt, bacon grilled cheese, and fries. They were delicious, hot, and ooey-gooey good! The fries were yummy, too. And the sandwiches were not at all skimpy, they were packed with a lot of turkey and came in such a big size that my daughter and I were able to split one order and we were both so full afterwards. The price was also very decent. While Hungry Hounds doesn't have all the bells and whistles as other more-popular diners and sandwich shops, they offer far more superior customer service and quality foods. We've been by this place a few times... one of which was a Saturday evening at 6pm and they were closed, which was disappointing. Why close at dinner time on a Saturday?? The other times we've come by and have actually thought the food was decent. The most spectacular and yet bland burger I have ever had. I mean it as a compliment. A great selection of burgers with a wide variety of toppings. The main problem is the meat is very bland. I've been here a number of times during my college years. I would say that the food is sub-par and not really worth it. I definitely wouldn't come here if I wasn't a student, and the main reason I went there when I was a student was to eat with others. The food was rather tasteless the few times I went and nothing was particularly memorable. Huh. This place seems underrated. Took a good friend of mine here under his suggestion after this one middle eastern place on San Carlos was closed (hopefully not for good..because its a bookmark to try for me). I'd have to say damn, not too shabby! We came here and the place was absolutely empty, although admittedly it was sometime in the afternoon. My friend ordered a chili cheeseburger or something which looked pretty good while I ordered a super chili cheese dog. My hot dog was sooo good. The chili was so good. Such savoriness. Such flavor. Such...cheesiness...yumm. We also ordered two pints of Blue Moon Oktoberfest beer, the only brand I haven't seen outside this place. Woah, that's some good beer. I've definitely been described as a certain type of K-9, specifically the female kind, and I don't really care if the tone of my review reflects one. :P Always open to trying new things, I visited the Hungry Hound as per co-worker reccomendation. The grub here is pretty greasy. If you're into the Jersey Shore, it is one hell of a greasy "Situation". I tried looking for the least greasiest item on the menu. I discovered a gyro, called the chicken gyro. Which technically, is NOT a gyro, if made with chicken, which then, in turn, however, makes it a chicken pita. Transitional phrases aside, I really appreciated how moist and well-seasoned the chicken was. Also, the chicken was not cooked kabob style or grilled, it seemed to be slow-roasted on a spic and then thinly sliced, similar to how lamb is sliced in gyros! Hence, chicken gyro. All in all, I do not forsee myself frequenting this business in the future because frankly, I am just not into a greasy meal in the middle of a busy work day. read more

I've tried the cheeseburger and pastrami sandwich from this place so far. The cheeseburger tasted like a step up from Burger King..same char grilled taste. The fries were the fat plain old frozen kinds that taste like watered down potatoes. Overall burger was ok. The pastrami sandwich was good but I couldn't eat the second sandwich because it was too salty. But for $5 it's a good deal. I got the BBQ jalepeno chicken sandwich and although it was good, the jalepenos were super, super duper spicy. I had to pick them out, maybe I will ask for avovado instead, next time. My bf got the avocado roast beef sandwhich and it was delicious. The roast beef was thin, moist, soft and flavorful. The bread isn't too thick and is warm and toasty. 4.5 Stars I absolutely LOVE the HOUND! Granted the food isn't exactly amazing and the service isn't the fastest, but they'll pretty much make whatever you want. I usually end up with the grilled cheese with mushrooms and tomatoes, small fries, and a large beer. Pay attention to that last thing I said. Large beer. I don't know where else you can go where when you order a beer they'll ask, "small, medium, or large?" I'm thinking the large is about 1 liter, or two pints. On tap, they have Peroni, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, Stella Artois, and, I think, Bud?? For such a small hole in the wall kind of place to have that kind of beer selection, I applaud them. They also do it right with the ice cold frosty mug. It's one of the most refreshing beers you can get anywhere! The only thing that I have a problem with is their bathroom towel device straight from the 80s. It's one of those actual towels on a roller, not paper towels, but I don't think it works and I'm scared to wipe my hands on it. Prices are reasonable, especially if you can catch one of their daily specials, and the burgers are a good size (I can never finish a whole one--thus, I get two meals for the price of one) and cooked well. The owners are very friendly and, when I lived closer and went there often, knew what I was ordering ahead of time. My only gripe with Hungry Hound is that it has become a cash-only place recently. Here's a 'blah' review for a 'blah' type of place. I'm not so hungry for this hound, but the food will do when you're in a pinch or if you're on your lunch break and you have some time to wait. The wait for our two hot dogs was a good 15-20 minutes, which made me a bit skeptical as to what they were doing with their time. It seemed that they had forgotten about us - and we had to remind them about our order. The bun was nice and toasty (and they used a good quality sandwich-type of bun) and the hot dog was charred and grilled well, but was a regular grocery store frank. Nothing too special. I like more condiments but only saw hot sauce, ketchup and mustard out on the counter. At least give me my relish! It was busy at lunchtime with business folks, families, and college students.
