Great biscuits and sides. What's with the plastic like macaroni and cheese? They are un edible once they get cold, What with the humongous plate size? Choose quality over quantity please. There is no way that's real cheese on those macaroni and cheese plates because it becomes like a brick when it gets cold. Some of the meat plates like the barbecue taste like it has been cooked at the start of the week. Three stars for hit and miss menu items. Gets two stars for being so offensively loud. So went here last night with my daughter and son. I cannot begin to tell you what a mind fuck this place is. It's a hopping bar packed to the brim with 20 somethings and perhaps the best southern inspired restaurant in New England. So the ONLY reason this place is not 5 stars is the seating. The table next to the fireplace is directly below a speaker that was booming (good music selection by the way) and the table wobbled. The drinks were well made and strong, prices for the cocktails was in the reasonable range. I had a whisky drink. We started with brisket sliders (our server warned us that they were small) and they were amazing two bite sliders. The brisket was the perfect combination of crust, fat and lean. Would order two orders for 3-4 people. We order the cornbread which was served in a cast iron baker with a gob of whipped butter. I make a really good cornbread but this was different level cookery right here. It was spectacular. Almost custard like in the center with corn kernels throughout. We also order the popcorn chicken (the amount of apps was my fault as I wanted to see what they did well). Simply put: I would run you over for another order of this chicken. I'm pissed that I didn't order the fried chicken. For entrees my kids had chicken sandwiches which were served on a potato roll. They loved them and raved about the flavor and texture of the potato salad. I had the best gumbo I've had since I was in NOLA. Spicy, full of seafood and sausage and okra. The roux was made expertly. The rice served on the side was also perfectly cooked and not all clumped together. Rice should not be an after thought and it isn't here. An amazing dinner, wish it had better seating but I will be back many more times. Hey Urban BBQ, and BTs Smokehouse you should both jump in the car to see how it's done. Best brisket around! The food was exceptional, just too busy in there. Seemed like a giant party and no one was really eating. The food was 10/10 and I can't stress that enough. The service was a 6/10 Atmosphere 5/10 - definitely over capacity to the point where it was uncomfortable (our table of 6 was squished into a 4 top after waiting 30 minutes for the table) the 30 minutes waiting was tough because there was just no where to go inside due to so many people being there I will definitely be back though! Maybe on a slower day for lunch or at a time when I eat beforehand in a more dinner like setting and then head to Hunters for a drink and live music. read more

PSA: So this review is not the restaurants fault but theres is just one thing that has made my girlfriends and I skeptical about going back. When we have gone on a typical afternoon the experience is great. Awesome staff and fantastic food. Yet annoyingly when there is live music there is a very vocal group of older male groupies that hang out by the singer. Now this would be fine except they get mad aggressive to the point of down right creepy with every female in the joint. Once rejected they tend to get almost territorial and make it uncomfortable. I've had quite a few female friends tell me they have also experienced this. Completely kills the vibe. It would be nice if they had a night with a female singer that attracted different followers / vibes and felt a bit safer. Now again, this is NOT the restaurants fault but something I'd be aware of when going out as a group of girls on the younger side. I'd recommend going early in the day/brunch. The mac and cheese is splendid when washed down with the Apres Ski Cocktail. read more

The staff is Incredibly rude. We came in with a party of 15 after our grandmother's funeral. They told us our little sister who is 21 and has had one drink in her life at her bday dinner. My husband and I went yesterday for the first time. We had seen your restaurant on Phantom Gourmet and it looked good. We were not disappointed. The bar was packed so we got a small table. I waitress was Courtney and she was great! We got wings which were superb. My husband got the brisket sandwich and potato salad. He's still taking about it. Haha. I got the brisket sliders. Courtney warned me that it was a smaller portion but let me tell you it was perfect. Perfect size and loved the little biscuits. Also, pickles were delicious. Drinks were on point. And we completed the meal with the beignets. They are a must have. It was very busy inside and very loud but it's a bar and is completely what we expected. We will be back!! read more

Hunter's First Brunch! Great start, creative brunch cocktails, cold brew and skillet corn bread to start the morning. When we talk bacon, we mean crispy chunks of pork belly. We ordered quite a lot of food, cuz... there's 4 of us... wanting to try it all. Fried biscuits, house prepared preserves. Sweet grits, peach and buratta salad, Cobb salad, did I mention bacon! Chicken and waffles , gorgeous brisket, juicy and perfectly cooked eggs atop. We totally enjoyed ourselves in this warm throwback atmosphere, fireplaces, pheasants, fish camp vibe. Super fun time. Not bad. Saw this place on the Phantom. Daughter took me g or my birthday. NOT FAMILY FRIENDLY. Either they didn't mention it, or I missed the part about the place being more of a bar for the mid 20 crowd. With that being said, wish I was that age..... Wish I could remember our waitresses name, she was amazing. Drinks were good and strong. We had a table full of food. Popcorn chicken was tasty with that mustard sauce. Chicken wings were just ok, corn and crab chowder was devoured by my wife as was the brisket sliders. NOT a fan of the cornbread. My daughter loved it said it tasted great mixed in her gumbo. Drinks are good strong... Meals were good and plentiful. Son had ribs and fries said they were good. Moms had the chicken n dumplings that was tasty as well. Daughter had the gumbo kinda salty but still GOOD. Wife had brisket sandwich which she also finished. I had the Mac n cheese ( tasty) fried chic ( tasty but a little TOO crunchy) catfish ( tasty) mash potatoes. The gravy s for the mashed potatoes was very tasty. Cocktails were awesome. Would recommend the Apres Ski over the When I Taste Tequila. Good selection of beers. Service was great. cornbread, Mac & cheese, gumbo and chicken & waffles were delicious. The sandwiches (Nashville hot chicken and brisket sandwich) were disappointing in both portion size and taste. Definitely need to either make them bigger and add another side or make them cheaper and suggest people order sides. Beignets were delicious as well. Manager was super nice. We'll be back! read more

All I can say is WOW! What a great restaurant. I actually have nothing bad to say. The food and service were top notch. Absolutely recommend getting the gumbo. Best I've had outside of Louisiana (and probably better than some places there too.). Worth every penny of our hard earned $$$. We will definitely be back. read more

This was my 2nd time at Hunters kitchen and bar the atmosphere is cool and relaxed service is great had the crab and corn chowder soup it was ok to much celery and wish it was a cream based souped but not bad. Went on a Monday they have $1 rib specials after 9pm but of course when I ordered them they were out so the bartender gave me a free drink:). They have a live band on Monday which is great only downside to going is the parking can be difficult but will definitely go again. read more

Had been wanting to try this place for a while so was excited to get there fir brunch. Clean, rustic decor, great tv for watching the Sunday games from where we were sat. Drinks were great as well. Unfortunately the food was average at best which was disappointing as the menu sounds fabulous! Started with the beignets which were bite sized and delicious. I wasn't a fan of the chocolate sauce it tasted a bit off to me, perhaps too thin but my date seemed to enjoy it. Tried the waffle bites which were very dry, more than a waffle should be, and the blueberry sauce it came with was far more tart than a balance between tart and sweet and did not help how dry the waffle bites were. The brisket sliders were good. Two bite sized pieces - the brisket was cooked well, biscuit was great and condiments were good. We also ordered the fried chicken Benedict. I noticed earlier that ALL the brunch chicken dishes, including the chicken and waffles, were made with "popcorn chicken". I thought this was odd and wondered if it was to be cost "efficient", not that the dishes were priced and cheaper. The popcorn chicken made could have been an overall great dish incredibly salty! Especially when added to the biscuit (which again was great) and the bacon. The chicken and waffle is also on the dinner menu and I noticed it's not listed as "popcorn chicken" so perhaps the dinner servings are completely different. Either way it wasn't bad, and I'd consider trying the dinner menu, but I don't think I'd choose to come here again for a while with all of the other great places in Boston. read more

I was feeling a little homesick, and I'm from Louisiana; so, I thought I'd give the gumbo a try. Most southern inspired foods in different places lack the true flavor and spice of south. However, the gumbo was extremely flavorful and gave me the taste of the south needed. I think this is the best dish I've had at hunters. Amazing. read more

Overhyped. The food was just okay and the service was disorganized. The mashed potato side came out first, followed by a wrong side we didn't order. Then it was a pretty long wait for the rest, which came all at once. But, if that wrong side hadn't come, we'd be stuck eating mashed potatoes for a long time while waiting. Once the rest did arrive, the waitress had trouble tetris-ing all the dishes so they fit on the table in a professional manner. She kind of just threw up her hands and gave up. Not her fault, really. Probably trouble with organization and pacing in the establishment in general. They forgot about our coke refill request and had to be prompted several times- waiting for it wasn't great because the food was exceptionally salty, including the gumbo that NPR overhyped. My tip would be to come off peak- maybe they're less disorganized then. Also, imho the live music was pretty bad on a Saturday afternoon. A white dude with a guitar slurring Dave Matthews type fare off key. Blaring it loudly doesn't actually hide mistakes. read more

Such a disappointment. This is a white washed southern comfort because eating the food made me completely uncomfortable. As a person of color who has traveled the south extensively, I do not approve of this southern food. The chicken wasn't fried well, inside pink and it was chewy. I got the shrimp and grits... the grits was good but the shrimp had no flavor and the grits only really had flavor bc of the cheese. And don't get me started on the the mac n cheese... I'm not sure how they managed to make it tangy but ugh, taking a bite of it further infuriated my palate. I give this two stars bc the drinks were good and the apps were tolerable. I returned to Southie specifically to finally try Hunter's. To say this restaurant underwhelmed would be too generous. We were seated for our reservation and did not see a waitress for over 10 minutes, despite being the only table. I ordered an NA beer, confirmed that it was stocked, but then the waitress brought a different NA beer claiming that they were out. She did not check with me to see if I would be okay with the substitution. We placed our order for food, corn bread as an appetizer, Mac and cheese, and a smash burger. The appetizer came out at the same time as the entrees and every food item was bland. The tables did not have salt or pepper and the waitress took another 10 minutes after the food came out before we could ask for the shakers. Seriously, I have never missed The Junction dive bar ambiance and food more. The taxidermy and country music is a total miss when factoring in the stereotypical bros behind the bar. Hunter's is a miss on all fronts. Skip it and find a real southern bbq spot. read more

What I love: Great portions and affordable prices. I had an order of dry-rubbed ribs, potato salad and collard greens delivered via Uber Eats. What I didn't like: I am still on my quest for a GREAT SLAP YUH MAMA soul food in this City since the passing of Bob's The Chef; I was hopeful per other reviews. I wanted to test the ribs dry and they did not disappoint. Nicely seasoned without leaving an aftertaste, tender and I could smell a hint of hickory. The potato salad was too creamy; I tasted too much of the dressing and only had a few bites. The collard green according to the Uber site is popular, but to whom I ask? Collards without smoked meat is just weeds! I would have loved a hint of bacon grease and some smoked meat flavour. I got one cube of meat, but the greens were not tender, needed to be cooked through more; they tasted of too much vinegar and a bit spicy. This ain't your Mama's Alabama Greens. However, am willing to try other menu items, but preferably in person. read more
