A traditional English Pub set into the charming town of Upperville VA. The atmosphere is enhanced by the outdoor patio dining which is dog friendly. Service is quick and the food is the best version of English pub food. They serve arguably the best fish and chips in Northern Virginia and it's my go-to order. They also offer amazing sticky toffee pudding and a wide selection of beers on tap as befits a proper pub. There are vegetarian dishes on offer too but the pub grub is the best option. Quaint, English pub style local farm to table concept with good service, and potential to be great. Some of the food is great; some not. Overpriced for what it is, but would return for the chicken pot pie. It's in Virginia wine country, but they're charging Hamptons prices. Consistency across the simple menu is needed for it to be great. Probably the best chicken pot pie I've had. It's easy to taste when chicken is fresh and local. Excellent quality veggies for salads, and killer crispy Brussels sprouts. Steak on salad was local, but tough. Dessert pretty good, not housemade, but from a local pie bakery, as I recall. Great food at a great value. We had a wonderful lunch. We ate outside under the tent and it was sublime.

After arriving, I realized I'd been there before years ago but had no recollection of the food. So this time I will review. Stopped in a Friday for lunch. It was not a planned destination but came upon it when it was time for lunch. Location and ambience: beautiful garden seating with comfortable sturdy outdoor chairs with arms - a relief for those of us who become wiser and wider with age. The garden was in full bloom and I admired the beauty and the work to keep it going. We browsed the inside and it was lovely. Service: friendly and welcoming. Food: husband got the huge slice of quiche and salad. The quiche was and nicely browned on top. It was so much different than I make - in a good way. I was torn between the burger and the "sweet and spicy crab cake sandwich" lunch special. I went with the crab cake thinking it would be lighter since I knew we had big dinner plans later. Sadly it was mostly breading and very dense. It came with "hand cut chips" which were french fries and not crisp. All a good reminder to ask how the crab cake is prepared, to ask the crab to breading ratio- especially when far from the shore. Crab cakes vary so much, I really don't know why I bothered to risk it. Oh well, my lesson. Would I go again? If in the area I might stop in to try something else and enjoy a drink. read more

Talley-ho! Thank you Yelp for leading us to this perfect spot for a truly English dining experience! The lodge setting was comfortable and warm. Part of the restaurant incorporates the original log cabin built in the late 1700's, additions and modifications to the building took place in the 1800's. Although the main dining rooms were closed due to Covid, we were able to have a relaxing meal on the inviting patio with social distancing and a beautiful ambiance. The brick patio was lit up with hundreds of twinkle lights and lush greenery abounded which made our wooden table donned with a market umbrella feel cozy and homey! We didn't have a reservation, but they graciously accommodated us! The evening got only better! Jacob, our server was brilliantly attentive and gave us the low down on the local scene. But first thing first... we ordered a bottle of Mont Gravet Rosé which was crisp and refreshing after our evening drive from Richmond. As we sipped and pored over the classic British-style menu of gastropub favorites like fish & chips, bangers and mash, shepherd's pie, farm fresh organic burgers, and more, we had a difficult time choosing our entrées, they all sounded so appealing! I finally settled on the chicken fried steak, and my bestie chose the roast beef sandwich au jus. Mmmmm... my meal was fabulous! The steak was tender and breaded with a delicately seasoned crust with just the right amount of crunch. The mashed potatoes were creamy, buttery and served with a smooth country gravy. The string beans were were lightly blanched, tender and fresh! No complaints! My friend's sandwich was piled high with juicy roast beef on a soft sub roll, I had to take a bite when offered! Amazing! And the fries were tasty too! For dessert we shared the strawberry shortcake, and our mouth did flip flops! You've gotta try it! We counted our blessings in finding this historic tavern! I was able to snap a couple of pics inside while on my way to the immaculate restroom. I loved the fireplaces with pewter dinnerware on the mantle, the foxes tucked in the corners, the hunting theme throughout, the colonial furniture, and the expansive bar with pewter mugs dangling above the wooden bar. For a milestone birthday dinner we were put in the dreary back room where the table was too high for the very uncomfortable chairs. They forgot our apps and didn't seem to care. The food did not live up to the reviews. For instance, the steak was tough and wasn't charred but rather a medium brown color. Other dishes were meh. The strawberry rhubarb pie was delicious and of course a better restaurant would been gracious and said they were comping the desserts since they forgot the apps...and it was a birthday. Love Hunter's Head. Have been a patron there since 2005. Came here to eat recently and was disappointed to find out that the dinner menu no longer included any of the pub fare that it used to. Not to mention, prices were astronomical! Bring back the pub fare for dinner! Mac and cheese, shepherds pie, burgers, banger and mash! I've been dining at Hunters Head for several years. It's always been a go to favorite. New folks to the restaurant won't have noticed any changes, but there are plenty. I dined there on a Friday evening with my husband and friends. One what should have been a bustling environment, it was decidedly quiet. I wonder if the changes have swayed others too. Gone was the automatic bread delivery upon being seated (and it was good bread). Gone was the ever favorite (for most folks) pub menu. The dinner menu was trimmed way down, and the offerings an odd mix (and my beef was more fat than anything). We miss the fun menu board near the bar, the wooden spoons to mark our tables, the huge variety of genuine pub meals (pot pie and bangers and mash anyone???), the bubbling atmosphere, the ability to order food at the bar, the impatient wait for a table when things were busy (it lead to the anticipation), and so much more. It turned out to be quiet, bland, boring and disappointing. Please come back original Hunters Head. read more

We sat at the tables under the heater outside, which were very toasty and comfortable. They have a good variety of drinks! I highly recommend their signature Smoking Hunter. For starters, we had the calamari, Brussel sprouts, and veal meatballs. They were all very good, but I loved the brussel sprouts! For the main entree, I had the French dip sandwich substitute side salad. The au jus was delicious, but the meat was a little dry and chewy (which the au jus helped with). My friends enjoyed a variety of entrees including the chicken fried steak, pot roast and sirloin steak. All I can say is "WOW". This place was recommended to us by the B&B owner and we're so glad we went. The restaurant is inside this 300 yr old home and you can feel the history. We love their food and like that most of it is sourced from local organic farms. Prices are on par with other restaurants of this caliber. My wife and I have a tradition of eating her on our anniversary but this year we found out our favorite dish was not available - I emailed to confirm but their amazing staff decided to make an exception and prepare two orders of the dish for us just for our anniversary!! My wife and I joined several of our neighbors for an early Sunday evening get together. I highly suggest reservations as by the time we left at 630pm the place was mobbed. Maybe just because of the holidays? The restaurant is easy enough to find in Upperville. It's the big white building on the right (coming from the big city) before you reach the fancy church. Parking might be a little tricky as their lot is small but many folks parked along the main road. No sidewalks though. You enter through a nice courtyard ideal for those warmer times of the year. We were corralled into a small room off to the right of the bar. There was a ripping fire going on in the fireplace and us smart ones all dashed for the far end of the table knowing it was already too warm in there. Their menu is a mix of bar food and dinner entrees. It can be tricky knowing what's available based on the time of day. The bar has a great ambiance and is well stocked with a large blackboard of seasonal drink specials in addition to your typical fare. I ordered the beef stroganoff with noodles as my dinner and was very disappointed. It just lacked flavor overall unlike what I have enjoyed at a couple of local russian restaurants. Maybe it's like getting fish at a burger joint? There were several other so so dishes including the beef stew and bangers and mash. The star selection and the dish everyone in hindsight wished they had ordered was the chicken pot pie. It was served with a ginormous biscuit on top of lots of yummy goodness. Service started off very rough with us feeling abandoned for long periods of time. It improved though once our waiter warmed up to us It is a bit of a haul to get out this way and not sure that it is worth a specific trip to just go here. If you are in horse country though for other reasons this is a decent spot. Just be sure to get that chicken pot pie. read more

Bottom of the barrel scraped up fries, four sad pickles on a plate, a $2 slice of cheddar cheese over $2.50 worth of COLD caramelized onions, and a wilted piece of lettuce. Paired nicely with my $13 fizzy mule which Lacked fizz and clearly used up an old, already opened bottle of ginger beer. 40 dollars for one person to eat wilted lettuce on a cold veggie burger and a flat fizzy cocktail. We've been going to Hunters Head for over 10 years. It used to be somewhere we enjoyed going every couple of months, and was often our date night or anniversary go-to because we loved the ambiance and food. We recently moved and so hadn't been for a year or so. In terms of the food we certainly took note of the reduction in the menu, including pretty basic items that we regularly ordered (mac-n-cheese and shepherds pie.) There were very few items and out of the 2 mains we ordered only one was something we would order again. The pot roast was wonderful. The calamari, as always was very good as well. We were surprised by the service as well. We had never had a poor experience here in terms of service. When we arrived for a 7 PM dinner reservation there were only 3 other tables seated in the restaurant, and it didn't get any busier during our meal. My wife and I had a sitter, were planning to have a relaxed quiet date night, and take our time leisurely enjoying some drinks and food. We ordered a salad and calamari as appetizers as well as our 2 main courses. The calamari came out quickly and a few minutes later the salad came out. We thought that those 2 could have been coursed out better but they were both appetizers so, sure. We hadn't had more than another 3-4 minutes and had both main courses crowding the tiny table as well. After finishing our meal our intent was to have dessert and another drink or two. Our server dropped off the dessert menu, didn't ask if we'd like more drinks, and returned a few minutes later when told that we were still chatting and kicking around dessert thoughts. When she came back she asked if we'd like the check as soon as she came to the table. It may not have been her intent, but we felt as though we were being treated like the restaurant was busy and they were trying to free up the table. We payed our bill and went home instead of lingering for another hour or two, enjoying each others company and ordering more. Probably one of the worst restaurant experiences I've ever had. After other reviews I think I just had bad luck. We went here for our anniversary for dinner. Made a reservation earlier that day. The Salad lettuce was served brown and the country fried steak literally looked like they tried to fry a piece of jerky! I couldn't believe what we were served! We drove more than an hour and looked forward to a nice lunch on a beautiful autumn day. Unfortunately, we were very disappointed. The meat of the French Dip sandwich was dry, cold, and flavorless and the Au Jus was also cold. The calamari had as many crumbs from the batter as pieces of calamari. Service was average at best. Ordered take out burgers on 9/29/2024. For a $25.00 burger you expect it to be good. However I ended up throwing out my whole order. I asked for my burger to be well done, figuring it would end up being at least cooked. It looked like they only threw it on the cook top for two minutes each side. When I opened my Togo box there was blood juice all over the box and on eveything. When I cut my burger it was beyond rare. I will eat a medium rare burger with no problems but this was rare the meat was still raw pretty much the whole burger. Can I give negative review! If you are white by all means go here - you will be treated with respect. My sisters and I (indian-American), we're treated horribly. The hostess had an attitude when we asked for a table and told us the patio was fully booked yet only 4 tables were occupied out of 12. When we asked to be seated inside with our dog only then did she have a table for us. Once seated we waited a good 5-7mins for the server to appear. She slammed the water classes and proceeded to ask what we wanted to eat. No pleasantries yet when she went to a table with people she is all smiles and jokes. I cannot support a place that does not treat all people equally. When we called this out the manager was full of excuses that contradicted the hostess-they were short staffed. This was my first time here. There was seating outside and it was a very lush and spacious yard. It felt like I was eating in someone's backyard! It seems like that they only take reservations, but they were accommodating to us and allowed us to bypass that and get seated right away! The service was very nice and quick. They were very accommodating with all of requests and were very patient. Our waiter Cameron was hardworking and quick with our orders. The bread that was complimentary was very good! It had a hard exterior for that extra crunch and that softness in the middle. The butter was a little off to me. However, I believed it was churned locally! It didn't sit well with me, but it had an organic taste to it. The calamari was AMAZING! It had an amazing texture, crispy but not oily. The sauce that went along with the calamari was godly. Really. I think it was a mango mayo. I took it and put it into my burger because it was that amazing. I might come back just for the calamari to be honest! The fish and chips was kind of a bust. It was supposed to be beer battered, but eating the fried fish without the tartar sauce seemed like eating something bland. The only thing that saved this fish and dish was the tartar sauce. The burgers on the other hand were so scrumptious. The meat well seasoned and had a nice char on them. There were minor issues with the burgers, but it wasn't big enough to cause a complaint. I asked for a burger that was medium rare and it came out medium. The other burger has an egg that was suppose to be over hard, but it came out over easy. Though the orders were not followed, the burgers were still very tasty The drinks were such a MISS! I am so sad that they have such yummy food, but such bad drinks. The peach whiskey they had, just tasted and smelled like whiskey. Not even a hint of peach in there. In addition, the amount of thyme in it, ruined the balance. The mixed berry sangria fared better, but not by a lot. The first sip, tasted like water. As you kept drinking though, it had the sangria taste we were looking for.
