I've been coming to this place for breakfast since I was a kid, introduced to it by my Grandad. Quality food at a good price. I give it 4 stars as it does need some care like tears in booths (maybe they could call Robert Irvine/restaurant impossible?). But the waiter/server/greeter was just so nice and so helpful. And the food. Omg awesome. I had the carne ado adovada lunch burrito the 1/4 size and had for lunch dinner and will finish tomorrow. The full size would definitely feed 4 plus, and I mean like Samoan linebackers. And the carne adovada itself was so good. I mean next time I may just get the tortilla with meat only as the flavor was just yummy. And super reasonable. Even my daughter liked the vegetarian burrito and a lot of times old diners don't have a solid option for this. Will absolutely be back. Also my favorite thrift store, the Assistance League of Albuquerque is a few blocks away so if you want to make a nice lunch time with both definitely do able. Another good restaurant that fell victim to the pandemic staffing shortage. There were 2 waitresses serving a full restaurant and running the carhop service. I'm not sure how the kitchen was staffed but our food took a while to come out after we ordered. But, even though they were short staffed and overwhelmed, the waitresses were still pleasant and positive. We ordered 3 dishes and it took about 30 minutes to come out. This seemed to be the average wait time. My kids really liked their pancakes and burger. My combo plate was also very good. I hope their staffing situation gets better, not everyone has an hour to spend on a quick meal. read more

A normally great restaurant faltering due to a slow kitchen and unfocused waitstaff. The bus 'boy' did more for us than our actual waitress. No silverware, no drink refills, our waitress was missing and never checked in on us, the only reason we got service was calling for her when she walked blindly past our table. I ordered the cheese enchiladas smother with green chile w/ a side of rice and beans. Everything that I ate just tasted bland to me. I think everything could've used a dash of salt. I can understand the enchiladas not being the best thing to order from there, but beans are rice are stables. I feel like you have to get those right. This was my first visit to Hurricane's. I love the old style drive-in vibe but unfortunately the food does not back up the feel. My friends arrived earlier than me and they already had a booth. It was very busy for a Sunday but they should be used to that. My table of 3 had to wait about 25 minutes for our food to come out. My chicken strips were meh. Not horrible but not what I would even describe as good. The gravy was pretty tasteless and the french fries were boring. The vanilla milkshake was amazing and our waitress was nice but not super attentive. It's not located in a convenient location to me so I doubt I will be back. read more

Great stuff. I've been coming here for decades and never wrote a review. It's time to fix that. But before I get started I wanted to say that I really miss the jukebox :-( They were slammed and under staffed today. That seems to be a common theme around town these days. No stars deducted for slower than usual service since the two young ladies working the front were working their tails off. They obviously could have benefited from some extra help ad were doing their best. My wife got the Huevos Rancheros with hash brown and green on the side and said it was delicious. I got the breakfast 1/4 disaster with Carne Adovada and green. Also delicious. The portions are generous and we never leave there hungry. I've only eaten there for breakfast but I think I'll drop in for lunch sometime for something a little different. I don't know about you but there is something about the good vibe I get when visiting an old school diner. It's sad that many of them are disappearing in favor of modern or contemporary style restaurants. read more

Had friends from out of town visiting who tried to dine here on Sunday (Mother's Day) morning. They ordered simple breakfast burritos and waited over an hour. Over an hour. They asked if it was some subtle racial passive agressor thing as the diner wasn't busy. I assured them ABQ is very diverse and that probably wasn't the reason, but dame 80 mins later and I had to wonder... Food finally arrived cold AND incorrect. One ordered steak and eggs, but was served ground beef, no eggs and cold. The other had eggs but also cold. Obviously the errors were not discovered until after a bite. When the server was informed, she only offered that they were short staffed with the manager on the grill. My guests were appalled at the service, the refusal to make things right, not even a lousy 10% off their bill but threats if they didn't pay up - the full price. Hey, if you're short staffed that's on you, not on your dining guests! I am mortified after talking up ABQ restaurants. This is not how service should be anywhere, let alone here. I'm not one for posting bad reviews lightly, but wow - this entire experience was inexcusable. read more

Yeah, I've noticed a disturbing trend on yelp. It appears that a lot of people have an issue with New Mexican food, in general. They then proceed to hate on individual establishments that serve it. Retro? Yes. Pretty sure Hurricane's is au originale. You won't find wifi, bleu cheese, or uniformed staff. What you will find is fresh made, authentic diner fare. Oh, and it's so good. Every time I go to Hurricane's, I convince myself that I am going to order something other than a Disaster Burrito. Okay, it loses points for lacking bacon, but otherwise, it's perfect. Two large burritos stuffed with meat and some beans, topped with excellent curly fries, spicy chile, and cheese, and it all comes in a ridiculous, stupid, just plain irresponsibly large portion. This thing is comically large. That's not just me. You can always tell who's ordering it for the first time because when they see it they start laughing and say things like 'holy crap'. Seriously, I'm a big eater and it takes me three meals to finish the thing. Sometimes four. And it's damn tasty too. Delicious, tender meat, above average green chile, and some surprisingly awesome curly fries conspire to make this a fantastic use of your 8.30 plus tax and tip (and please tip well here, these waitresses are the most undertipped I've ever seen). As far as their other food goes, it's generally quite good. You can get better hamburgers, better New Mexican, and better breakfast but you are certainly not going to be disappointed ordering them here. Their food is much fresher and much higher quality than you'd expect from the divey, 1950's decor. And while it's straightforward diner food, they do it all well. Weck's be damned. It had been roughly 20 + years since I ate here last. We happened to see it and stop in. The smells and tastes were the same as the old days when I worked just down the street. The green chili is good and not too hot. The flavors of our breakfast left me expressing old stories of coming there as a kid with maybe $4 to my name. To sum it up, a Disaster Burrito is tantamount to the offspring of a jumbo-sized nuclear enchilada crossed with a big ass Idaho spud on acid. If you've ever attempted to eat one of these flaming big dogs, I'm sure you would agree! To break it down, they take a huge tortilla, stuff if with spicy meat and cheese, surround it with a ton of curly fries, toss on lettuce, tomatoes and more cheese, all smothered in New Mexico green chili sauce and a very spicy red sauce. The legend of the disaster burrito was not abided by. We went in with foolish hearts and ate the big one, the disaster itself. Why oh why did I feel the need to order chicken fingers as well? With two of us and the help of Dr. Pepper we tackled this behemoth gut bomb full of red and savory Carne Adovada, and beans. Why did we not option for chile on the side, as I look back the server was subtly encouraging this. If you are not a speed eater the fries become limp and bloated. The disaster burrito would feed a family of 8 from the third world. It is a mess to eat and it may not be the only disaster your body experiences on that hallowed day. We used to go here a lot because we used to have enough personal errands to run in the area, and we would enjoy stopping in for breakfast before our day began. The only reason we slowed down coming here lately is because our errands don't include that part of town like it used to. Boo! Well, this is how much I like this place -- I will drive across town just to have breakfast there. It's worth the trip. THE GOOD: I like the atmosphere, the busy workers, and of course the breakfast. My husband usually gets the chicken fried steak. I love the pancakes that come with the 2-2-2 breakfast. The free coffee refills are a plus, and the fact that they will give you a full to-go cup of hot coffee shows how generous the business is. THE BAD: The green chile stew has pan fried potatoes as one of their ingredients; I am not a fan of that choice. The building is older, so the women's restroom feels like one you would use in an airplane. Some of the seats at the booths are weird when you sit in them. You'll have to visit here many times and tryout different booths to feel what I am talking about. THE BEST: I do like it when the regular waiters and waitresses recognize me and my family when we walk in the door. They are genuine. We were in the neighborhood and thought we'd use one of our Entertainment coupons and found a buy-one-get-one-free huevos rancheros coupon for Hurricane's Cafe. Drove up and we thought it was a car hop joint because of the speakers and menus in the parking lot. We took a seat in a red vinyl booth, and as we looked at the menu, we couldn't help but rocking out. They have the best oldies music playing! That, alone, was worth the visit. The huevos rancheros arrived and looked great! Pleasantly surprised because we really didn't know what to expect. We ordered the hash browns rather than the regular potatoes. Waiter asked if we wanted them crispy, which we did. I would say the huevos were not the best this town had to offer, but definitely good! I asked for "Christmas" chile on the side because I'm a bit of a wimp when it comes to heat. Green was tasty, but a little hot for me. The red was just right! Coffee was good and the wait staff was attentive. I took off a point because my eggs were a little too runny for the "over medium well" that I ordered. Also, they only had Sweet n Low for artificial sweetener, which I don't like. To give them half a point back, though, the jelly (I asked for) to eat with my tortilla came in varieties that I have never seen in a diner. Smuckers Cherry jelly and Blackberry jam. Yum! I cannot stress how much I adore this little place. From the exterior, you really don't expect to find yourself just completely enthralled by it... But by the time you leave, you're so full, so happy, and barely notice the $ you've spent. Everyone greets with such a friendly happy nature; and frankly I'm not sure how because it doesn't make sense that the waitstaff actually makes any good money with the entrees so cheap. I almost always get the Disaster Burrito but I have ventured out twice. I once ordered the "large" zucchini sticks. I posted a picture of this GIGANTIC portion. $3.99 for over 30 delicious and right out of the fryer sticks! I literally thought I was in fried food heaven. They were so good! I've also ventured out with the Burrito Supreme (their breakfast burrito) and it was huge and tasty too. I haven't been let down on any occasion I've chosen Hurricane's. I of course prefer the Disaster Burrito to anything else, but that's kind of a given. So monstrous and flowing with fries and cheese. I have not had another quite like it. On a recent trip to Alby I insisted on going to Hurricane's. My ever patient and extremely understanding brother agreed to take me there (which is a no brainer, he loves the place also). Even though I only visit this place every year or so, the Disaster burrito is muy delicioso. There are two versions to this monstrous delight, the breakfast Disaster which has beans, eggs, choice of meat (bacon, ham, etc), potatoes, cheese & smothered in either red or green chile sauce. The lunch Disaster is like the breakfast one sans the eggs but with chicken or ground beef, the potatoes are french fries and the whole mess is topped with lettuce and tomatoes. If you can not decide which chile sauce you want you can order it "Christmas" which means the burrito will be smothered with both sauces. I've tried both sauces and lean towards the green. I usually go for the lunch Disaster with ground beef. This go around I had the chicken. The chicken looked all white meat and was cut into chunks. My oh my was it ever tasty. I order the 1/4 size and it is HUGE. If you're ever in the neighborhood, you should drop in. You will love this place. (The Belgian waffle also looked delicious, another table ordered it). read more

I wore a mask in, the gentleman (a customer exiting) holding the door for me when I entered, was not wearing a mask. It's confusing at times and this place handles it well.
