Husk had great service and great appetizers. Come dinner dish, I ordered the pork chop and to my surprise it was raw still. I let waiter know and he took it back and brought the same pork chop back just seared more and still not cooked well. By this time my husband was done with dinner and waiter asked if there was something else I could order. Because I had waited a while for them to get my dinner meal right, I decided to just ordered an appetizer which tasted great. Sad to know a restaurant like husk would offer a raw pork chop, I was looking forward to this dinner as we drove from orlando to Charleston and made the reservation over a month in advance for my birthday weekend. Upon hearing about Husk through recommendations, I went with my wife to go to dinner at Husk after a day of tours and shopping. When we got in, we learned that needed reservations or could be on the wait list. Then the hostess offered us a reservation at least 2 hours later.( I gave my name and number.) So we went back to the hotel and waited. I got an alert on my phone that our table was ready 45 minutes earlier than expected. We went back to Husk and had an unexpected bad experience. The hostess showed us to upstairs to our table. I thought that we would be in an air conditioned indoor section of the restaurant. They said that our table was ready on the upstairs balcony in the extremely high heat. I explained that my wife has health problems and can not be in the heat for long and told them that no one told us this would be our seating. They said sorry and claimed that anyone with waitlist or last minute reservations is seated there. We left immediately and were extremely disgusted and disappointed. It would have been better to have been told that they were booked. We could have gone about our business. At first what seemed to be a accommodating experience turned out to be a disaster. This experience was also awkward because we appeared to be the only customers of color in the restaurant at the time. Not sure what to make of this?? Perhaps, Husk should be clearer on their seating, waitlist and reservation policies to any potential customers. I would not recommend this restaurant to any of my friends. read more

Great restaurant with an inventive, locally grown, well executed menu. We ate four appetizers. The chicken skins, as recommended by yelp reviewers, were a fun munchie. I could see it in every sports bar in the country. We also had The Pickled shrimp and that was a delicious blend of flavors. The last two were extra special. I hate kale, but their baby kale salad done with a Caesar flavor, made me a believer in kale's possibilities. The Grilled Asparagus, English Peas, Soft Poached Egg, Roasted Onion, Country Ham, Green Garlic, Lemon Confit, Manchego Broth was a blowout. Unbelievable dish. All three of our mains were inventive and delicious as well. Service was great. The room comfortable and pleasant. One of the best Charleston restaurants end of story. I really liked the whole theme of this restaurant how everything is from the Low Country. Also, I really liked how this restaurant was set up in a refinished Victorian home. It really gave you the feeling that you were dining in the south. Hey the food was good too!! We started with the Husk puppies which were a tad dry but I am pretty sure they are supposed to be like that. If I ever make it back I will probably try another appetizer. For lunch my fiancé got the Husk cheeseburger which was pretty damn good I must say. It comes as a double party burger that is 75 percent beef and 25 percent bacon which needs to be cooked to medium well in order for the bacon to cook through. It's topped with pimento cheese as well as pickles and a house mustard mayo sauce. Can't go wrong with that. Also, I got the south Carina BBQ plate.it was a slow cooked pork shoulder with a bean and cabbage salad and a piece of cornbread. Honestly it was one of the best BBQ dishes I have ever had and they definitely have me a legit portion. This restaurant was our last stop in Charleston and we truly saved the best for last!! Very overrated! Maybe dinners and brunch meals are better. We tried their pig ears based on reading previous reviews...they were overly greasy and the dipping sauce was bland to say the least. Main courses we tried were fried chicken....very greasy over cooked dry meat and dripping in fat with little flavor, the hamburger is one of the worst we've ever had and the BLT was decent. We didn't order dessert because we were so disappointed with our meals. Oh and their signature cocktails weren't enjoyable either. There is good. There is better. And then there is Husk. While on vacation (and after reading the hype in Food and Wine magazine rating Husk as the #1 restaurant in America) I thought we should try out some good grub. We decided on brunch since we have two little ones. Since the best place to start from is usually the beginning, I'll start there. The cocktails were great. Of the four of us (not the kids of course), we had two of their amazing bloody marys, a mabelflower shrub, a fatal kiss and a swizzle. The bloody mary was otherworldly...and if you know the recipe spread it web wide because people need to know. I asked the waitress but it appears to be a guarded secret...all I know is they sub fresh beets for tomatoes and press fresh onions as well as add a small slice of Serrano ham and pickled okra garnish...and apparently the Tabasco is all made in house as well. We only had two apps but they were both great. The fried chicken skins were super tasty, then again anything fried is delicious (except butter and bacon...everything else is fair game though). Then the black pepper biscuits and gravy were unbelievable. We liked the biscuits so much we ordered a second batch, we also had 4 people and the app only brings 2...so we weren't too gluttonous. The main course we all shared: the burger, the Lamb Monte cristo, the shrimp and grits and the French toast. Everything was delicious! The burger was perfectly cooked, the lamb Monte cristo was sweet and savory, the French toast was perfect and the shrimp and grits were very good with whole shrimp, Lima beans and I think some bacon (?) (however this was my least favorite of the dishes, but that's like saying one day out of 4 in paradise wasn't as good as the other days). Lastly, the dessert was the final stamp on our already insanely good meal. Get the oatmeal pie. Then thank me later. On top of it all, our waitress was very knowledgable about the plates and drinks. The service was fast and friendly. And finally it was more or less kid friendly...we we're not the only folks with kids by far. It's nice to know there are still amazing restaurants like this that will serve families looking to get a great meal without having to hire a babysitter (though dinner may be less kid friendly, at Keats as far as the crowd is concerned). We left feeling well fulfilled and can not wait to come back. Life is too short to eat sh*t food. Sure, eat it sometimes. But enjoy a meal at a place like Husk and you'll swear off the rest of your diet and dinings out to enjoy a meal here more often. Have eaten in the main dining room And the adjacent bar. Would suggest either for a delicious meal and wonderful hand crafted beverages. If you choose to eat in the main dining room be sure to have a reservation as the wait times can be quite long! The bar next door tends to have plenty of open seats and the upstairs lounge area is wonderfully relaxing with a more limited daily menu of light bites and a few staples. Let me first say that this is probably the second review I have ever written on a restaurant ever so reviewing things is not really my thing but my food experience at HUSK was so awful and beyond disappointing I had to write. My husband and I were visiting Charleston from Los Angeles and based on all the reviews and articles on HUSK I felt like this was the must restaurant to go to. We are huge foodies and had been looking forward to this meal for awhile. I made reservations for my husband for a big milestone birthday and I am so upset that this is the dinner he will have to remember when thinking back on his birthday. We ordered everything that the waitress recommended. We started with clams, oysters, and pig ears for appetizers. The pig ears were so salty and over-seasoned. My husband and I forced them down as we didn't want to let on that we thought they were awful. The broth for the clams was good but the clams seemed like they had gone a bit bad. The oysters were just ok - pretty flavorless. For the entrees we ordered the catfish and the pork dish. My husband's pork dish was all fat. He could barely get one bite down. I don't think I have ever seen him barely touch a dish before in his life. I really don't know what to make of my catfish dish. The grits seemed like they were sitting out for awhile. And my catfish looked like it was old as well. This is a dish I feel I could have gotten at a cheap diner somewhere and it probably would have been better. What we were beyond disappointed and baffled with the most though was the side of corn bread we ordered. I believe this corn bread was on an episode of "best thing I ever ate" and we love corn bread so we had to order. It was literally the worst corn bread we have ever had in our entire lives. Extremely dry, bland - very crumbly - it was literally inedible. Finally to end the night we thought we would try and end on a high note by getting dessert as you really can't mess up dessert. Well we were wrong. We ordered the pecan pie dessert and it tasted like a bland pecan protein bar. My husband had one bite and couldn't eat anymore. We literally sat there in disbelief at the whole meal. How can a restaurant that has all these amazing reviews and was deemed best new restaurant can be this bad. I mean it literally was probably the worst dining experience we have ever had and we eat out all the time at various types of restaurants all the time - all over the country.. I have no complaints at all on the service. The service was good. They made us a nice custom menu for my husband's birthday. Our waitress was really nice and we never led on how awful the food was as it wasn't her fault and we don't like to make a scene at restaurants or send food back. We went during the week so I don't know if it was just an off night or they had a bunch of food that was going bad and wanted to get rid of it - I really don't know what - but it was EPICALLY bad and truly the most disappointed food experience we have ever had. Hostess was so rude when we had a drink at the bar and let them know we were there they rushed us out of the bar and said they were "one minute away" from turning us away, saying "you don't have to deal with the kitchen-I do" whatever that means. Several of my check ins have been at the Bar at Husk which we enjoy very much. The bartenders are interesting and knowledgeable. The setting is fun. For the restaurant, we have been 3 times and I have become less enamored with our.more recent visits. I love the locally sourced food and constantly changing menu. The staff has been inconsistent over our visits with some great service and some adequate. The first time was truly the best visit and perhaps it was the new experience and all they hype. I still enjoy Husk but it is not on my "must do" list for Charleston. I also find it noisy and perhaps the tables are too close but I find it distracting. read more

Not often do I hand out 5 stars! Went for lunch, got a reservation on Open Table easily the day before. Service was friendly and attentive while still being casually comfortable. The atmosphere is relevant to the Queen St location historic roots with modern updates. We tried several cocktails and spirits and were excited by each of them. The pimento cheese app was one of the best we had in the city and most places offer it too! We enjoyed the shrimp and grits, they happily customized one order to taste of my friend. We wanted to love this restaurant in the worst way possible. But this was one of those cases where our expectations might have been a little too high. Anyway, we didn't quite experience the blow us away meal we had hoped for over the past several weeks. Nothing we ate was really bad (exception: the vegetarian teenager did not like her veggie plate but did like the succotash appetizer) but the problem was nothing we ate was spectacular. For starters we did order the cornbread and chicken skins with the spicy honey dipping sauce. The cornbread was quite good but by no means ethereal. It was just sweet and smoky cornbread. I guess there is only so much you can do with it. The chicken skins were a major let down. I was hoping we would get them grilled and crispy but they were deep fried which gave them the texture of pork rinds and they were essentially tasteless. There wasn't much going on in the dipping sauce other then hot sauce and honey . If I can make it at home it doesn't impress me. They present their wine list organized by soil type. That seemed kind of precious to me. Who really cares? The menu has an emphasis on locavore items but how and why does that require a need to present wine this way? How about just sticking to recommending which wines go best with which dish? For entrees, my wife ordered the lamb terrine and I ordered the Ossabaw pork chop. The lamb was pretty good as was the pork chop. No complaints in terms of ingredient quality or how they were cooked. But at the end of the day that is all they were. Decent pieces of meat cooked properly which on the right day can give a guy (me!) narcolepsy. Please do something that will make my jaded palate stand up and take notice!!! For dessert we split the peach cobbler and that was very good. We both enjoyed it. But I find it hard to quiver at the memory of a peach cobbler. Separately...I will rave about the Bar at Husk, which is located in the small building next to the restaurant. We stayed in the hotel across the street so I managed to spend a good chunk of more than one evening downing artisinal cocktails at this bar. My favorite was the Swizzle, which is rum based with plenty of lime and a house made falernum. Very good. The southern screwdriver was the runner up. My wife loved the tequila cocktail but I can't remember what it was called. read more

I was very conflicted about my visit to Husk... the restaurant itself is GORGEOUS, but the food didn't do it justice. I want to live in a southern house EXACTLY like the upstairs dining room of Husk. Gorgeous large windows, little balconies with tables for two, gorgeous wood floors and shabby chic furniture. Very romantic for a date... However, I had a really hard time finding something on the menu that I got excited about. The menu changes twice a day, so maybe it was an off day... In fact, the menu was hard to navigate in general. I was there with four other people, and we all agreed that it was very vague, and seemed to care more about where the food was from than telling us what we would be eating... I'm a big fan of locally sourced meals, but I do think there has to be a balance where diners know what they are getting and can make educated choices. We started with a skillet of cornbread, but I found it very dry, and I couldnt taste any of the bacon that was supposed to be in it. The butter served with the bread that came out before made it slightly better... We also got the chicken wings, which had an amazing sauce... I wish that sauce was on everything. However, the wings themselves were smoked, and so the skin was thick and fatty, sauced and sitting on top of the meat. They need to remove the skin after smoking, then sauce the skinless chicken pieces... Or grill the chicken after smoking maybe? Something... anything. The portion though was great- perfect for us all to share. I got the shrimp and grits, it was good, but I've had better in New Orleans. The portion was so small- it came in a tiny little cast iron pot, and WAYYYY down at the bottom was my portion of shrimp and grits. I've never seen so few grits... I almost couldn't find them. The shrimp were also pretty small. Overall, it was a good dish, but I wouldn't get it again. My friend got the cornmeal dusted catfish, and when it came out, she almost asked the waitress where the rest of the meal was. It was a small filet, pushed to one side of the plate awkwardly... Another friend got the chicken sandwich... the menu failed to note that it was slow-roasted BBQ chicken (like, pulled apart in pieces) piled into a deli roll... it was very strange and looked almost like a cheesesteak without the cheese. I also have to note that one person in my party didn't eat pork, and they had a very hard time finding anything on the menu to choose. They asked the server if they could substitute out the pork, but the server said they could not. They eventually ended up with an arugula salad. The bloody mary was practically perfect in every way. My mother said it was the best she'd ever had. We started with the butcher's plate and the pig ear lettuce wraps. The lettuce wraps were divine! Everyone else was a bit skeptical to try them, but I forced the table to order them, and we were all obsessed! Delicious!! I split the shrimp and grits for my entree. Came in for Brunch a couple of Sundays ago, we tried booking a table on open table but it wasn't letting us so we decided to just go and see if we can get in since we have heard so much about it why not. Well we walked in and were told it was a 20min wait perfect! We sat out front and people watched and were then escorted to our table upstairs on the outside patio. The restaurant itself is gorgeous and nicely decorated. When the sun would peek through the trees it was HOT but thankfully it got cloudy quick and we were able to enjoy our meal. The Bread was amazing it was served with a Pork Honey Butter and I swear I could've had 4 helpings of it!! The bread alone deserves 5 Stars!!! We started with the Clams in a beer broth- A little too salty so I decided to use the crostini with it, it mellowed it out. My BF got the Chilled Corn soup which to me was absolutely A-Mazing!! For our main dishes I had they're version of Eggs Benedict- It was a Cheddar Cornbread Stuffed Quail that came over "pancakes" and poached eggs with a spicy Holandaise Sauce. Now It was good but I wasn't blown away by the flavors and it didn't have enough sauce so it was little dry. My BF had the Biscuits with Gravy and a side of Bacon-They were incredible!! Our service was great she was very nice and knowledgeable! So if it wasn't for the Salty Clams and the dry Quail I would be giving this place 5 Stars! 3.5 stars, maybe? It's better than "A-OK," but I don't think I'd call myself a "fan." Like many others, we decided to check out Husk after hearing about its rave review in Bon Apetit magazine. We made reservations for a Friday lunch, so waiting was not an issue. The building is gorgeous and the interior is very bright and "upscale comfortable." In terms of the food, we particularly enjoyed the smoked bourbon buns, shrimp and grits, and sweet potato soup (although the sweet potato flavor was subtle). My mom ordered the duck, which was a little salty for our liking, and my dad had the catfish sandwich. We also got fried green tomatoes, which were quite good (I don't even like tomatoes), and the bacon cornbread, which was bland and not very bacon-y. So it was mixed but overall good, especially since everything was clearly fresh. Service was wasn't the fastest -- noticeable lag time between being seated and ordering, then ordering and our food coming out -- but our server was very friendly, as was the hostess. You could also see the owner walking around checking on things, which is usually a good sign. Random: On our way out, we spotted Andrew Zimmern, star of the show Bizarre Foods. He had apparently just had lunch there as well. He was very friendly and gracious, and he posed for pictures with other diners. We came here for lunch before leaving Charleston. I had made reservations as was recommended by many. Sitting upstairs on the outdoor porch was the perfect way to end this memorable weekend in Charleston. We were lucky enough to have sunny weather with warm temperatures all 4 days. Upon the recommendation of our server, I ordered a bloody mary and my husband ordered a dragon's punch made with tea. The bloody mary was served with prosciutto and the punch was unusually good, we were happy with our selection. For lunch I ordered the fried chicken and the husband ordered the infamous burger. (Funny enough, a couple our age on the table next to us ordered the same exact thing, except she had another cocktail.) At the first taste of my chicken, it won me over. The chicken had the crispiest skin and cooked to the right temperature; juicy and moist yet crispy exterior. It comes with a Brussel sprouts side which was fine, it didn't blow me away but I love Brussel sprouts in any shape or form and this was no different. I was disappointed in the small portion of Brussel sprouts. The husband enjoyed his burger, raved that it was perfectly seasoned and cooked. I agreed. It was juicy, a key for a great burger. It comes with potato wedges, again cooked fine but the portion was on a smaller side. We both enjoyed sharing our meals with each other. The ambiance is elegant without being stuffy. Our server was friendly and helpful in picking our drinks and food. Husk definitely lived up to the hype. It's slightly overpriced but when the chef has James Beard recognition, price is nominal for good food. read more

My wife and I were dining in the Charleston, South Carolina area when we were on vacation late in the month of April. We decided to stop in at Husk, a sister restaurant to McCrady's, for lunch as we walked around the College of Charleston campus and King Street (oh, how I love both of those). The bourbon list and the wine list are impressive at Husk - especially the bourbon list. I mean I'm from TN which is just south of KY, the bourbon capital of the world (in my opinion... I mean they do have a "Bourbon Trail" in KY)... and I've been all over the state. The ambiance is great and the decor is pretty decent as well. Moreover, I really enjoy their small porch on the second floor that looks out onto the street below as a dining option. We rather enjoyed the seats that we had and the drinks that we had. Now, the food... the food is just A-OK, which is really rather unfortunate. I wanted this place to be awesome and jaw dropping. Maybe, it was my less than Lowcountry choice of a burger or maybe it was the sense of mourning had already set in that it was our last day in Charleston/last day of vacation, I don't know. But, the dining experience from the perspective of food was just not what I expected. read more

Husk was our last dining experience during our Charleston trip. We absolutely loved the decor of this place. Out of all of the restaurants in Charleston, I was the most comfortable here. The food was fantastic. Definitely get the pimento crustinis as a starter. I had the steak which was served with a pea puree and fresh sweet peas which were the best I've ever had. We stopped by Husk for a late lunch on Friday afternoon. I was surprised to hear the hostess ask if we had a reservation, fortunately the wait was only 10 mins - or so we thought! 20 mins. later the hostess walked outside and asked if we were waiting for a table, apparently she was confused when I asked for a table for 4 people when only 3 people were standing there (the 4th person was parking). Once she realized our name was on the list she quickly seated us at a table. The décor is contemporary with southern elements mixed in. Our center piece was a mason jar with dried beans and okra husks - very cute! To start we shared the fried green tomato and pimento cheese. There are only 3 tomatoes but the serving size was perfect. I would go back to Husk just to have the pimento cheese - it was amazing! Traditional in looks but with a spicy kick. For lunch I had the fried catfish BLT - served on Texas toast with bacon, yellow tomato, bibb lettuce and mayo. On the side are home fries and a horseradish ketchup. The sandwich was good, however there was way too much bread. Also, I wish the server had told us there was horseradish in the ketchup, for 1) I don't like horseradish, and 2) a person at our table is allergic to horseradish! Husk is probably 3.5 stars but since that's not an option, I'll give it 3 stars. I'd go into what I ate, but since the menu changes each day, I'd hate to tease you with dishes that aren't available, but they were all amazing. Chef Sean Brock uses only southern sourced ingredients for innovative and modern lowcountry cuisine. Comfortable decor, attentive and friendly service, it was a great experience and lived up to the great reviews I have read online and heard from friends. Can't wait to go back for another great meal. If you want to book a weekend dinner here, better plan weeks in advance. If you can't get a spot for dinner, "settle" for the lunch. Drink menu was extensive (similar if not matching the Bar Husk menu next door) and has surprisingly great non-alcoholic drinks (OJ with jalapeno). Cocktail I got was OK, but had to be mixed constantly to keep flavors properly mixed. Food was really good. According to Husk, they try to keep their menu as "Southern" as possible. I pretty much loved every entree I tried. I think that's about what I liked most about the meal. The best entree for me was the pork chop, which is fair considering the waitress also said that pork is the chef's specialty. The pork dish was very flavorful, which was mostly the pork itself (enhanced by the glaze that chars it on the outside). The vegetables were very well-cooked, and looked slightly underwhelming but tasted great. More importantly, the jus and the vegetables really complemented the pork. The catfish entree was my next favorite, since the catfish had a very nice, clean flavor. I always hesitate to get catfish because of the sometimes muddy flavor that I taste, but I tried my friend's plate and it tasted great. The sweetness from the creamed corn helped, too. Lastly, the chicken was pretty good itself, well-seasoned, and the peas were nice little bursts of flavor. However, I do get the complaint some have about getting more gnocchi. I felt the same way, but it didn't really detract from what I tasted. My girlfriend (who ordered that dish), loved every bite of it, so that was good enough for me. We got a grapefruit tart and rice pudding. I liked the flavor of the rice pudding, but I didn't really like the fact that the rice pudding was served cold. I guess I'm really used to Asian rice puddings, maybe, and like it kinda warm and looser. The tart had great pastry, and the curd on the inside was awesome. The soft meringue on top was kinda too sweet for me, but when I realized that the gastrique around the plate (there wasn't really enough for me) was very tart and balanced it out, I started to eat them together and that was good. I would say a good meal overall, and if I had money to drop like that, I might drop it on this. It's definitely worth a try at least once. read more

This review is for the Bar at Husk only. It was rated by Southern Living as one of the top Bourbon bars in the southeast and I think it lives up to it. The selection is amazing and they know how to craft a great bourbon cocktail as well. The service is always great too. Seating is limited and you might walk past the place a few times before you find the door so you feel like youve earned it when youre sitting upstairs on the plush sofa, sipping your 18 year old bourbon. read more

Okay to go or not to go to husk on my trip to Charleston was my biggest dilemma since I couldn't get a reservation in time and was worried about the outrageous lines and wait times. I had made a reservation to poogans porch right next door which had availability and was going to see if we could get into Husk. It was a Monday around 11ish when they just opened and when we got there no one was there which made me happy but wondered what all the hype was about since I was able to get in right at opening within 5-10 minutes no problem. The place inside is charming, with the old southern feel that was updated. Just like the food at husk, they give traditional southern favorites a new modernized twist and that was soo up my ally. So I'm really happy we did have a chance to experience husk and I highly suggest you do as well. I know some of their menu items alternate and they do regularly change up the menu but I was really hoping their fried chicken would still end up on the menu and by our luck, it did! Score! I was so happy to order that, their much talked about cheeseburger and their version of shrimp and grits. Well first came out their complimentary rolls with butter and OMG were those absolutely fantastic pieces of incredible edible carbs. We each had one but I could have easily eaten 10 as they were so soft and so damn delicious. Our food came out pretty quickly afterwards. The fried chucke was as sensational as it looks, crispy on the outside, tender and juicy on the inside with a nice level of heat. The piece of corn bread they offered next to it was a little on the miniscule side, I guess they were watching out for our carb intake. But it really was a good dish and I would absolutely order it again. The burger was also pretty fantastic and one of the best I had in a long time but I'm from Chicago so we have some pretty good burgers if you ask me. The shrimp and grits were also delicious, I liked their sauce but I would have preferred less peas and more bacon but that's just me. They were also nice enough to split that dish for us so we each had our own little serving. Overall, a good time well spent. Those rolls and butter were legendary and a reason alone to visit husk. The food for the most part was delicious and decent pricing for everything and the service was on point. They also have a bar right next door in case you need to wait for your table where you can also order that same cheeseburger there without any crazy wait just an FYI.
