Everything was wonderful at Husk! I can't say enough about the food and service! A southern charm

Bill was close to $800 for 6 of us, we had good food, good waiter service but unbelievable rude host Patrick. 3 ladies in our group went inside the restaurant while our husbands went parking our cars. Patrick took us to a table which was pushed way into a corner, it was obvious needed to rearrange so people can get into the wall side of the table. Patrick didn't ask or offer to help us to pull out the table. I had to stop him at stairs to ask for possibility for another table. Patrick came back in 2 minutes with cold and impatient attitude. Of course NO other tables available, and he did NOT offer us/3 older women any help with pulling out the table... do you think it's management allow their host to be this rude? This place was really good. I think it depends on what you order. I ordered the short ribs and the pork. The rib sauce was sooo good and I didn't really care if the ribs were good or not. The pork was DELICIOUS. It was so juicy and flavourful. The catfish was also cooke pretty well and the fried quail as well. It wasn't blow you out of the park good, but pretty well done and I feel like doesn't deserve anything less than 5 stars. I'd go back for other menus, but not just get anything on the menu. The strawberry gazpacho is one of the best things I've ever eaten. There were berries, and beets, and pickled onions, and I don't know how they thought those things would go together but they were so right. The only negative thing I have to say is that it was hard to get a reservation which is why we were there at 2pm. Unfortunately because of this and bad planning as far as eating a late breakfast I wasn't super hungry. I would have loved to try more of their dishes. read more

The very first thing I want to say is that to all those people who are giving bad reviews or complaining because this restaurant doesn't serve "traditional Southern food": You're all idiots who can't be bothered to even read the information about a restaurant before you eat there and give a review. At no point has Husk (or for that matter any of Sean Brock's restaurants) claimed to serve traditional Southern food. The website for Husk and the blurb on the menu say the same thing: that the restaurant "...reinterprets the bounty of the surrounding area, exploring an ingredient-driven cuisine that begins in the rediscovery of heirloom products and redefines what it means to cook and eat in the South." It's traditional Southern ingredients, reinterpreted. And now for the actual review: Traditional Southern ingredients reinterpreted WELL. We were spending 2 days in Charleston at the tail end of vacation and I was determined to get a reservation. I couldn't land dinner on the days we were there but we managed lunch on a Friday. We arrived 15 mins early and enjoyed some time sitting on the front porch watching people walk past. Within 5 mins we were seated upstairs next to a window (and next to a bridesmaid's lunch, which was fun to people-watch). What we ordered: Drink: Puttin' on the Spritz - Aperol, Nonino Amaro, HUSK Lemon Shrub, Hard Cider. This was a perfect summer drink; not too sweet, a little tart, a hint of bitterness. It was also deadly. More than one would have put me under the table. (My partner ordered a beer which was ... beer like.) Appetizer: Johnnycake with pork belly. Absolutely amazing. I expected this to be small, but it was not. It was big enough to eat as an entree or split with 4 people. A light, puffy, fried crispy corn cake topped with spicy glazed pork belly, peppers, cabbage slaw, and crunchy pork rinds. I could have had this for my meal and been perfectly happy. My lunch: Shrimp and grits. One of the few "traditional Southern foods" on the menu and done supremely well. The grits were creamy but still had texture and some "bite" to them. The shrimp were perfectly cooked. The sauce was spicy but didn't overwhelm. His lunch: Brisket bahn-mi with potato wedges. He said it was delicious but I didn't get to try it so I'll have to take his word for it. Dessert: Apple crisp with vanilla ice cream. Lovely dessert; you could taste the apple and the spice, the crust was flaky and not soggy. The service was excellent and our server knew the menu inside and out and was able to answer all of our questions. This is not a FAST service restaurant. Be prepared to linger over your plates and enjoy your food, rather than rushing through. All in all, exactly the meal I expected from everything I've read and heard and seen about Brock and his restaurants. I really wish we could have gotten in for dinner, but we'll try again either here or in Savannah. Came here as our first stop after a long drive from DC (after checking in at the hotel). Was immediately struck by the converted residence look and the inviting, homely feel on the inside. We had drinks- Wifey had a dragoon punch (tea based, with fruit, and some sort of liquor) and I had a Grapefruit Shrub (fruit and seltzer based drink with fruit vinegar) and both were amazing! I like how they put the history of the drink on the menu too! For main course, I had a Seared Wreckfish with shrimp broth and seasoned rice/greens, and Wifey had the Seared snapper in some sort of cream sauce with a mixed side of hominy,potatoes,vegetables. They were both out of this world! The seafood was incredibly fresh, my filet of wreckfish was perfectly cooked, as was the snapper. It tasted like the seafood had leaped out of the ocean into a pan, gave itself a perfect sear and landed on our plate. For dessert, I had a eggnog creme brulee and Wifey had the chocolate bread pudding. Both were good! Final rating: 5 stars! 4/4 for food, +1 for the wow factor. read more

After the strong recommendations of food-forward friends who have visited, we made sure to plan around a reservation at Husk for our trip to Charleston. I'm glad we have it a chance, but it was a bit of a disappointing meal. Suffice it to say that among the 4 people, not a single person was wowed by any dish, most were not even impressed to the point of "very good", everything was just good or average. To start - one cocktail from the menu was quite disappointing, but one that we suggested to be created was quite good. The cornbread was a huge disappointment. It had a nice crispy crust on the sides, but the inside was dry and mealy with no describable flavor. The pimento cheese was just fine, and the crackers served with it were almost inedibly salty. Of the entrees, chicken and gnocchi was good but no better than the average, fried quail in Louisiana hot sauce was literally just that (and the dirty rice it was served with was not dirty in any way - just tasted like rice), fried catfish with grits was the best - the only dish we would describe as a standout in this meal. Finally the pecan tart was good - not too sweet but a nice flavor of its own. It's served with a lemon sorbet that was tasty but makes absolutely no sense with a pecan tart and totally overwhelms it. Would not return. I'm sad to say that even Husk Nashville was a better food experience than the original location. read more

I was so excited to try this place after watching Chefs Table and seeing Sean on multiple episodes of no reservations but was highly disappointed. At its best the food didn't taste inventive, at its worst it tasted like food that was sitting out for a few days then re-heated up. Building is very beautiful. I love the neighborhood. Wonderful setting. Food -- Burger just like in and out (in California) but twice the price ... I took off the "hat" top bun cause it was super thick. This is definitely a good burger especially if you like American cheese. Potato wedges literally potatoes (don't bite into them right away, very HOT). Drinks are like watered down cough syrup with splash of koolaid (go to High Cotton, Halls, Bourbon and Bubbles). I really came to have some good dessert (and good food and cocktails) but yeah ... talking with the waiter about the dessert he really had no idea never tried any but he did recommend cream brûlée' however; I thought I better go to Kaminsky's. A very solid 4. I would even give my main dish a 5 :) The staff was fantastic, definitely make a reservation. It's a two story house that's absolutely beautiful. It's on the main strip on King amongst many restaurants. So much competition in this area! The bread to start was just okay. The butter they hyped up but it tasted like plain butter ha! We got the octopus to start. Too much grain and veggies and not enough octopus but the octopus was amazing. The duck confit was spectacular and the steak was divine. The sides for both were fantastic. The steak had mashed potatoes with Brussels and tasty other things I couldn't name. So much alcohol to go around. I had a cider and there was plenty of mixed cocktails, beer, spirits galore. It was on the fancier side and they didn't rush us at all. Would recommend! read more

My rating is not because we didn't like it, we did. I don't feel any thing we had was something to come back for. Service was great and atmosphere is amazing, especially being in an old home. My husband ordered the chicken and I ordered their cheeseburger, which our waiter said they were well known for and had been in a few magazines for. Both were good, but neither was something I would tell you that you HAVE to order or you would be missing out. Again, good food, great atmosphere and top notch service. A fantastic meal. Had the tilefish and heritage pork. Hard not pick the plates up and lick every tiny ounce of broth/sauce that remained. The buttermilk dill broth with the fish had so much flavor. The service at Husk was great and the definitely took their covid protocols seriously. We were able to get a nice outdoor table which was spaced far apart from the other guests, all the employees had masks on, and I had no worries at all eating at the restaurant. The service was really good, our waiter was always on top of everything and the food came out pretty quickly. The food was really good, I had the grouper and my wife had the fried catfish and we enjoyed them a lot. I'm not giving it a full 5 stars because I felt the portions were a little small for the price and I wasn't as impressed with the desserts. What a great experience- a solid spot to visit if you're in Charleston. We opted to dive into a bunch of appetizers instead of getting individuals meals. Nothing like a sampler of everything right? Arugula/Berries/Fruit salad was pretty good- I'm not much of a salad person, but the fruit was good and all the various ingredients complimented each other well. Slow smoked pork ribs- very tender and flavorful. Not too sweet or spicy, hit the right balance. Southern fried chicken thigh- these little chicken nuggets were moist and tender- the batter was nice and crispy. Heritage pork lettuce wraps- little cubes of pork were cooked very well and the butter lettuce was nice and delicate. The glaze and marinated cucumbers worked very well. Southern artisinal charcuturie board- the country ham was a delight as was the cheeses that came with. The grilled sourdough was nice and crispy, I could have had more of that and less of the mini buttermilk biscuits that didn't really do it for me. Dessert- Dark chocolate peanut butter pie with a sour cream stratiatella ice cream? Never had a sour cream ice cream before but I'm sold. The tart/sourness of the ice cream played off the super rich and sweet chocolate peanut butter pie. Wait staff was awesome- the only downside for me was that drinks were a bit slow to come out. It was fairly packed that day and none of the cocktails are quick to make so just order two from the get go. Will be coming back and trying more stuff. read more

The charm this place has was definitely what led us to try for a bite here! It was beautiful. On a Friday night, we tried for a walk in reservation around 7 pm and we were seated at 9 pm so we grabbed some appetizers elsewhere and then had some apps here at 9. We were so excited to be seated outside on the balcony even with the walk in. The skillet cornbread was my favorite! Came to this place on our first night in Charleston because everyone who knows anything about Charleston seems to know/ recommend this restaurant. And I had read the chef won a James Beard Award. You definitely need a reservation for this place - I was able to get one for 930pm about a week in advance, which was the only thing available for a couple weeks. This place lived up to its hype for food, drinks, and service. Our waiter, Nick, knew the menu inside and out and was extremely helpful and patient with all of our questions about the menu. They list the locations where all their ingredients come from in the South so you know they put the effort into quality. The stand out dishes were: - Fried Chicken Skins: basically fried chicken, hold the meat. Wonderfully flavorful - Arugula Salad with apple, beet, walnut, etc: a very nice component amongst the mostly heavy and fried southern foods on the menu. Not your average salad, lots of toppings and depth - Pigs Ear Lettuce Wrap: "I never thought I'd like something better than bacon, but now I do" - direct quote from my dad - Confit Duck Leg: melt in your mouth good, perfectly crispy skin Drinks were also great. Haymakers Punch was not too sweet and not too boozy but super flavorful. Option Bee was refreshing and creamy feeling with the egg white. We also got their jalapeno tequila cocktail which was light and balanced but nothing special. The atmosphere of the restaurant is lively and nice but not the type of place you need to dress up for, but can if you want. Overall, excellent food and excellent service. Traveling to Charleston for the first time, I wanted to make sure we went somewhere that was charming but had great food. Husk did not disappoint! We also had several different people all mention asked to us so we wanted to try it and weren't able to grab an afternoon reservation. Anytime we see we can't get in for that night and a pretty big foodie town we know it's a good spot. I have an extensive bourbon and whiskey list-Fun to review and even more fun to try. We opted for a Manhattan with aged in the barrel bourbon. Including a luxardo cherry, we were in heaven. The building is. But the service is fresh and dishes innovative. We had to try the pigs ear lettuce cups for an appetizer and they were so delicious. The waiter explained that they are first pressure cooked To remove any of the gelatinous texture and then fried to crisp up to the great mouth feel like a fantastic price of bacon, paired with some pickled vegetables in a fresh butter Lettuce leaf, it smacked of being one of the best appetizers we've enjoyed ever. We decided to share their shrimp and grits which was also savory and sooooo flavorful. On a chillier start of winter day, it was the perfect comfort food selection. Loved the waiter-his warmth and enthusiasm and no issue with us just ordering a couple bites and sharing. Cocktails were good. The cornbread is good, has a bacon crumble. I had the fried chicken and it was delicious. Best part about the chicken dish was the bean salad underneath was amazing. Husk has been on just about every must try restaurant list in the last five years, so it is hard for this spot to fly under the radar. This is an example of a hot spot living up to the hype though. My wife and I showed up on a weekday for lunch and we only had to wait about 10 mins. We thought that us getting seated in less than an hour was a small miracle, but we will take it. I would definitely recommend going for lunch. You get nearly the same experience for less money and less of a wait. Service: The service here was top notch. The hostess was immediately friendly. They offer to text you when your table is ready so you can venture around Charleston or grab a drink somewhere while you wait. Once we were seated, we were immediately greeted by our waiter. He was happy to give recommendations and gave us some suggestions based upon feedback that we gave. The Food: The food at Husk really does live up to the fanfare. First, the server brought out some rolls with bourbon infused sea salt and a pork infused butter on the side. Great start! We then ordered the house made pimento cheese which came on a grilled crostini, topped with pickle relish, crispy ham, and chives. Such an interesting twist on a southern classic. The pimento cheese was up there with some of the best that I've had. This was my favorite part of the meal. For an entree, we split the Brisket Melt. The brisket was tender and the additions of the caramelized onions and bread & butter pickles was awesome. The fried potato wedges that came with it were perfectly cooked. I asked for some ranch on the side and was brought some pimento cheese ranch. Unfortunately, they do not bottle up this goodness for sale. I asked. Lastly, we had the cornbread. This for me was the most disappointing part of the meal. It is very hard to fix moist corn bread, and unfortunately this batch was dry. Atmosphere: The restaurant is in an old house and it is charming yet modern. I think that it is a great spot for a date night. They also have a nice side patio and a beautiful front porch to rock while you are waiting. I would highly recommend Husk to anyone travelling through Charleston. Husk is a farm to table restaurant sourcing all ingredients fresh from all over, and you can absolutely tell! Their menus change daily, so you can only imagine. Husk is a very popular restaurant in Charleston. Make sure you get a reservation well in advance of the date you want to go. My mistake was procrasinating and only being able to get a lunch reservation. I highly recommend the pork rinds and rhe ember charred wings. The pork rinds are nothing like I ever had. They are airy and sprinkled with brown sugar and cinnamon for the perfect savory sweet combo. They were phenomenal. The wings were perfectly charred amd the sweet or age sauce was delicious. They were nice and sticky. The entrees were ok. The burger with the pork belly grounded into it sounded better then it tasted. It was slightly dry and a little over seasoned. The Butchers melt was not bad. It had alot of Smokey meats ham and bacon. Finish off with the eggnog creme brulee. It was delicious. The service was top notch and very friendly. read more

It was only natural after discovering we would be moving away from Charleston to make a reservation here at Husk. The reviews are amazing and the overall buzz surrounding the restaurant does make you wonder just how good they really are. So, we decided to make this our last date night while living in Charleston before we relocated to the West Coast. The restaurant itself is beautiful Victorian home from the outside with a quaint little courtyard on Queen St. Then once you enter the restaurant, it is gorgeous. A bit of modern mixed with rustic touches, exposed wood and brick upstairs at the bar, and leather chairs and sleek decor in the main dining area which is where we sat. The food is phenomenal. But somehow we already knew it would be. The dish I ordered was a beautifully composed dish of roasted honey glazed chicken, broth, potatoes, fresh herbs, and tart berries. I also ordered a cocktail, the Double Vision with tequila, rum, jalapeño, cucumber, lime, ginger, and lemongrass. It was refreshing and I loved the slight kick from the jalapeño and ginger. Overall, from the service, ambiance, location, food, and beverage, it was one of the best Charleston experiences we'd ever had. Making it the perfect way to say farewell to Charleston. read more

A bit underwhelming experience. I wish husk all the best. The dishes on the first course were excellent. Ribs, octopus, shrimp and grits, cheese platter were great towards excellent. Dishes on second course of steak, and duck cassoulet was truly underwhelmed. Dessert was alright, the recommended coffee creme brulee was nicely mild , but hone and milk cake was a bit dry. Beyond disappointing after getting a 5:15 pm reservation a month early! That was the only time that was available. Restaurant had a great reputation but ... Worst dining experience ever! Server was verbose at describing the food on the menu. Everything sounded great. Appetizer with cheese spread, sliced smoked meat ( fancy salami ) was large and biscuits were very good. Deviled eggs mediocre. We should've ended our meal there. Both Entrees were tasteless ( tilefish) and my pork chop was tough and dry with some raw fennel sprinkled on top! "Heritage" baked beans were also tasteless. 3 different people came to our table trying to take our plates while we were eating! We were obviously eating too slowly for this place. Half way thru the appetizer our server warned our entrees "were coming up". We said we weren't ready. That was obvious by looking at our appetizers. None of the servers who asked to take our plates wanted to know why I barely ate my pork chop! Our server took my full plate and yet never asked if I wanted it "to go" or if we enjoyed our meals.? We decided to forgo dessert even tho we were there to celebrate our birthdays. Our menu even had a "happy birthday" written on it. They were anxious to give us our check and turn over the table. Southern. Soul. Food. Done. Right! If you are looking to have some delicious, true to its original taste and exceptionally well put together southern food, Husk is the place! This place gets busy, so be prepared to wait if you dont have reservation. We found it difficult for dinner reservations so ended up having the lunch there! Arugula Salad- Crisp Arugula, pickled radish slivers and the mustardy green fairy dressing! Deep flavor! Shrimp and Grits- One of the best shrimp and grits I have had. Usually other places that i have had, they add a lot of cheese and its cheese and grits with Shrimp. But not here. Velvety grits and perfectly done shrimp with the shrimp-jus flavoring the grits! for ~$16 one helluva dish! My wife who is not so fond of grits really enjoyed it! Now that says a lot! Veggie Platter- My wife decided to try veggie platter (dont ask me why?). They dont have it on the menu, but it was a chef's curated menu with brussel sprouts and carrots, cauliflower and other veggies, and a side of grain (millet I believe) with cabbage. All three dishes, the size of a decent side portion were good. Corn Bread- Although the corn bread is not 'exceptional' but the pork infused butter made up for it! Pork infused butter (most likely bacon I assume). What can go wrong? Fun fact:- if the ingredients in the kitchen isnt cultivated, farmed or grazed in the south, it aint making it into the kitchen! read more
