Stopped in for a drink and some food during a layover. Walked by the giant pretzel which looked AMAZING - big and fluffy with a nice crisp on the outside. I sat at the bar in a freshly opened, cleared off spot in the middle of the bar. The bartender was doing some wiping up and glassware duties. I sat for about 5 minutes contemplating if I could put up with the rancid beer smell emanating from somewhere that hadn't been cleaned in a week or more. I'm guessing under the bar mats in front of me? The taps were at the end of the bar at least 5 seats away... I left remaining unacknowledged. Had I been greeted, I would have at least had a drink even if I couldn't eat with that smell piercing my nose. read more

This is going to seem like a complete non-sequitur. Please bear with me, I promise I have a point. There is a breakfast restaurant in Milton, Massachusetts that is one of my favorites. They specialize in skillet breakfast bowls. One of the things that sets it apart is how well it is managed. Even though it is not a small place, even when filled to the brim with people, food comes out fresh (not from under a lamp), and in 3-5 minutes. I share this because how well a place is run influences the overall experience. I appreciate that there is a myriad of things beyond the control of the server or bartender. However, when something goes wrong that is due to faulty management, a server/bartender doing their best to deliver a good experience is not enough. Back when I landed in O'Hare, Ice immediately caught my eye. I know that airport restaurants aren't earning Michelin Stars or James Beard awards (at least not regularly). Stil, something about a cool, sleek, and modern exterior meant I would likely be stopping in before my return flight. I had the opportunity to do just that, though the experience was thoroughly subpar. This comes down to the management issues. The server was the only one running the restaurant and had been on her feet for eight hours straight, without a break. This contributed to the service being slow and disorganized. The issues also extended to the bar service - because the bartender was new, he was unable to make any of their specialty cocktails, only able to make generic ones. Quick note here: all these generics were served as doubles... which is appreciated when trying to bear the ~$20 cost... however, asking for it as a single only reduced the price by less than two bucks! I get the economics and pricing in an airport terminal are different, but still! Okay, onto the items (finally?); I had the opportunity to try the Chicken Chop Salad and a Mojito. The salad was respectable. While I would have liked a little more chicken, I found everything was fresh, more or less well balanced, and dressed perfectly. I liked the overall combination of ingredients, and the portion size was decent also. I don't recall the exact price, but forgivable for an airport. Finally, where it came to the mojito, I am a little less thrilled. It seemed more like something I would make for myself than something ordered at a bar. I think it comes down to the glassware being a little tall and the mint not being appropriately muddled. Let me be clear - I don't blame the server who has been on her feet nonstop for an unreasonable time. I also don't blame the bartender, who just needs a little more experience and not to be the only person on. My issue isn't with these two individuals. However, the lack of proper staffing is a management issue, and leads to a poor customer experience. My issue is wholly with poor management. With this, as sleek as the place may seem, Terminal 3 has more than enough places I would be happy to patronize instead. read more

I'm not sure who the manager is or that they are thinking, but this bar/restaurant has really nice decor but HORRIBLE SERVICE. I had been sitting for a while and no one came over to take my order, so I went to the bar and asked if I could order there. He wouldn't take my order even though he wasnt serving anyone else at the time. The only server for the tables seemed stressed and pretty angry because she was the only one working the whole restaurant/bar. That's probably not her fault. Bad service is really a result of poor management. The server took it out her frustration on the customers though - not cool for a place ith $13 draft beers. They need to hire another server!! I actually can't say I've found myself so disappointed in a while. First and foremost, let's open with the high. Food was decent, it's pretty hard to screw up a BLT I grant but still it wad edible at least. That's more than I can say for my first drink, I've never had a bloody mary provided to me that was so spicy it was unpleasant to drink. Also, I'm not sure who makes these decisions but whoever decided an airport restaurant shouldn't have coffee should reconsider. You're going to have travelers coming through from all time zones, and all different points of the day, coffee is a staple that I'm not sure why you don't offer. Let's move to the Ambiance, I'm admittedly not sure what theme Ice is going for... maybe winter, maybe modern, it's unclear but what is clear is that it's sterile and really not very welcoming. You walk in to a seat yourself sign, fine not bad. The seats are peeling, and not the most comfortable, there's odd lighting fixtures hanging from the ceiling and overall there's just nothing welcoming about when you walk in. This looks like some high-end bar/nightclub attempt... in an Airport, you've missed the mark with the audience you're looking for. You're not going to accomplish nightclub or high-end bar and be traveler friendly, at least I haven't seen one yet. Finally the service. Super fast I grant but it's not common that the waitresses don't want to chat a little with their customers at least from all the times I've gone out to dinner it isn't. It's also not common to be easily able to tell your waitress hates you off the bat. I'm not sure why, but the waitress who was serving me clearly did not like me, I don't know if it was just too far into her shift or what but yeah. Overall the atmosphere and service of ice says "We don't want to deal with you." So that's where I'll leave it. 2/5 I'd advise against selecting ice for your between or pre-flight meal, you wouldn't want to bother the staff would you? read more

No, just no. If you love overpriced beverages and really bland food then this place is for you. I was flying out of Chicago later in the morning. I usually fly United but on this trip I decided to give American a try. Overall a much better experience, but you are here for ice. So I thought about Frontera, but I eat there so much and being a good Yelper, I feel like I owe it to people to try different places. So I checked out ice. Looking at the menu, cocktails are $15. I find that ridiculous because a liquor pour is way less expensive than wine and beer. Just watch bar rescue...I ordered a Bloody Mary. Nice mix but 100% not worth the price. It took them too long to deliver it to me--20 minutes.....I was the only person there. By the time it came my beer was warm and my spirits dampened. There is no such signage. I waited for the man to finish, and asked him if I could go sit over at the seat now. By then someone else had taken That seat and sat down. He (FRANKY) served that man in the seat. Another patron got up and said she was leaving because she thought he was "a rude asshole!" I agree. For an airport restaurant it was pretty good. Service was quick. I ordered the Chicken Chop Salad. If I had to find something to complain about the salad it was that there wasn't much green. There was a ton of grilled chicken, blue cheese crumbles, bacon, egg, heart of palm and dressing. Next time I'll probably ask for the dressing on the side. If you fly Virgin America like I do, this is the most decent place around Terminal 3 , L section in Ohare. They serve salads, flat breads, sandwhiches and ofcourse liquor to your heart's desire. Each table has a charging station which is great. Service is fast and can be quite busy. Interior is chic and very modern. They also have American terminals here as well which is my gate to Madison. Not bad to hang out here if your flight is delayed for hours. Food is okay. I typically fly out of Ohare at least 10 times a year either for work or vacation. I always stop at ICE for a cocktail before my flight. A lot of people don't have the funds or mileage to get into a specialty lounge like the Admirals Club and all that so it's nice to have a place that truly separates you from the rest of the airport. Everywhere else is open. You go to Starbucks, food court, any of the small bars, Goose Island etc... it's all open and still feels like you are in the airport. Ohare is busy as all hell ALL the time. Sometimes you want to just get away from it before your flight and can't. ICE is perfect for that if you're not part of any of the airline clubs or lounges. When you walk in, you sit far back away from everyone and it feels like you're in some ritzy club in the city. The decor is pretty upscale, modern and sheik. As fancy as it is going to get at a airport bar...but pretty nice none the less. They serve breakfast which looks pretty good but I have never eaten there. I'm usually not that hungry before flights and stick to a relaxing liquid lunch instead of good bourbon or whiskey. Last time I was there they changed the menu quite a bit. I got a really tasty old fashioned that was on the menu. Drinks there are strong and worth the money, and mixed well...usually. Service is typically quick if the right bar tender is on duty there. One day there was a new guy who had no idea what he was doing and took more than 10 minutes to make 2 drinks. One was some vodka cucumber drink or whatever that was for my co-worker and it was totally watered down. My drink I had to tell him what was in it and how to make it...yes I had to tell him how to make it even though it was on the menu. There should have been a compari cube inside and he instead put a normal ice cube in. I corrected him, then he proceeded to use his bare hands to take the cube out and put the new one in. At the end of it all my drink tasted fine but I think it's because I told him how to make it and without doing so it would have been a pretty crappy drink. Overall this place is good, except for a couple times I've been there where there was new and inexperienced staff. That's understandable but there should be proper training involved, especially with bartending, or someone there assisting them that knows what they are doing. If you want a craft good cocktail before your flight make sure to hit up ICE, as long as the right bar tender is working. Otherwise walk away and grab a beer at Goose Island instead. read more
