I was curious about this place since I eat a lot of my common lunches at L&L. IchiRamen would have a good amount of crowd so I checked it out with my other half. I just came back from my travels including Japan so I was craving for some authentic Asian foods. When I entered the restaurant, it was a puzzle. The restaurant had two names- Ichi Ramen and Hing Lung?? Apparently, Hing Lung was a Chinese Restaurant in SF or SJ Chinatown. I can't help but feel wrong, did something happen unfortunately to the original restaurant and revitalized in San Bruno with a Japanese disguise? This isn't the first time I have been here. When I do come here, I normally order the rice w/ assorted cured meat, which is pretty good and the only good food on the menu. I got seated right away, but waiting for the food to arrive is another story. We waited forever for the food to come out and by the time it arrived, we didn't feel like eating it anymore and wanted to leave. We ordered the deep fried chicken wing w/ spicy sauce, which looked super crisp and delicious until blood oozed out of the chicken wing. I used a chopstick and pry each chicken to see if they were all raw. Turns out, every piece of chicken was raw and blood was oozing out. I told the waiter what happened and they didn't apologize and were planning to charge us for the chicken wing that we didn't eat! I'm not a doctor but eating raw chicken is not safe. Ichi Ramen, located in a nondescript strip mall, actually has a history and following that belies its name. The Chinese characters on the glass windows actually reveal that Ichi Ramen is the relocated restaurant Hing Lung, a long time San Francisco Chinatown institution, and the posted menus reveals that the cuisine is the same comfort food Hing Lung always offered, including Congee, wonton noodle soups, and rice rolls, but now includes a few trendy ramen options (thus the name I suppose). We arrived for a late afternoon lunch (past 2 pm) and the place was packed with a queue and sign up list. The affordable prices and homey food has obviously struck a chord with the predominantly Chinese clientele in the area. Our order: Rice Rolls in XO Sauce - nicely served in a clay pot and well flavored with both XO sauce and a few string beans. Tasty. Congee with Cubed Pork Blood - $7.80. I used to love Hing Lung's Congee and the version here is solid though not as good as I remember. A bit too lumpy but decent flavor and plentiful pigs blood. BBQ Selection - a small dish with two BBQ selections: BBQ Pork and Hainan Chicken. The BBQ Pork was limp and flavorless and clearly made awhile ago. Same with the minced ginger Scallion sauce that lacked punch or freshness. The Hainan Chicken was better but overall inferior to Cooking Papa, Hong Kong Saigon Restaurant, and many others I've had. Overall, I'm glad to see Hing Lung survive as Ichi Ramen and will remember it as a comfort food stop. I'd probably get the Congee and rice rolls again, but I'd skip the BBQ to try the wonton noodle soups. Although Cooking Papa can be inconsistent, I think I favor it over Ichi. Don't make a rookie mistake and order ramen, there are too many options to choose from on the menu. Meatball Congee: congee has to be eaten hot and this bowl comes out sizzling in its claypot. Same silky smooth texture, not too sludgy or thin, and unique flavor that I remember. Simply a match made in heaven when you dip in the fried Chinese doughnut. I get a second fried doughnut with the sweet crisp on the side to munch on while waiting for other food. Rice Noodle with beef brisket: huge portion of tender slow cooked beef brisket. Every where else you get more rice noodle, but here, you will have leftovers. Wonton Noodle soup: you actually get pieces of shrimp mixed with the ground pork in the wontons. Thin egg noodles that are stretchy with the ideal firmness. Light but clean soup base topped up with green onions. Claypot with cured meat: another taste of my childhood. Reminiscing the cured meats that your grandmother makes for you to eat with your rice. Worth the 15 minute wait because of the crunchy bottom formed in claypot rice. Cure meat has a salty, but sweet taste, where you can't find elsewhere. Chow mein with soy sauce and bean sprouts: need to say no more, it is what it is. Authentic Chinese cafe style restaurant. Great for lunch or dinner, but there is always a line out the door. Don't expect the hype surrounding Instagram worthy restaurants, but do expect it to be very loud with lot of aunties and uncles conversing. Always satisfied with our meals. And despite yelpers giving this place only 2.5 stars for rude waitresses and service or non traditional ramen, there's usually a list to write your name down with a line of people waiting. Why? Gave this place a try...I only looked at the stars prior to coming in and still decided, I want ramen, I'll try it out. Read the negative reviews after. My experience was fine. It's close to home and plenty of parking. We walked up and there were a lot of people in there which they served pretty quickly. That was promising. We ordered a lot of food which I thought the portions were big for a reasonable price. The flavors were hit and miss...the miso soup was bland and the spicy shoyu wasn't spicy at all but other than that, everything else was good.
