I absolutely love this location as my go to hibachi. In the past I had small issues with service but it drastically changed pre covid and they took it serious overhauled and became as fancy as they deserve for the level of food they provide. Since covid I have dined in (prior) with awesome standards set, and gotten takeout often since then with satisfaction each time. If you are looking for fresh sushi or amazing hibachi this is my go to place and should be yours too. read more

It was actually just so good. We didn't even have hibachi. For 45 dollars we got 3 solid things from menu. One was the happy dragon roll. It was just very good, drenched with ton of sauce. Next we had the spicy tuna. It was both spicy and savory. And finally we had chicken and beef udon. Usually I am not a fan of udon but this was just amazing I could not stop eating the food. We decided not to sit at the cooking table, but just to get our hibachi food at our table... and it was just awful that way.... The fillet was OK but the chicken was way overcooked. And found a rather quickly that the experience of your food is totally upside down and different if you don't get it at the hibachi table. For one everything gets in front of you at the same time which is very inconvenient and it doesn't flow correctly if you sit at an in a booth or a table.. whereas when you sit at the hibachi table, you get things a little bit at a time they're fresh and hot and it just works out better there... you get what you get.... The soup was very good..... The salad was swimming in the dressing and just not edible. The rice was good, but a little overdone sticky. The vegetables were still crunchy not cooked well enough for us at all.... The chicken was way overcooked.... Dry. The only great thing was that our fillet was extremely tasty.... And our drinks were tasty Pepsi/Coke whatever it was. The waitress was nice as she could be. We had also ordered crab Rangoon or crab cheese. They call it which was extremely good and we would order that again.... but when we complained about the chicken being dry, the manager chose to take the appetizer for $10 off when we had spent $30 per meal on the chicken fillet combo. She did offer to cook us chicken again, but we figured why at this point we were full and we were just kind of disgusted by the chicken wasn't done and we were celebrating our anniversary. Just seemed like it all went wrong.. so getting the discount was a better choice we thought and then we were kind of disappointed that it was only for $10. Possibly which stopping again for an appetizer ..maybe Rangoon again then again for my wife she says she wants to never go back again so.... so much for that. I guess my biggest suggestion when it comes to my review is sit at the hibachi table.... Sit with a strangers, feel uncomfortable, but have some fun and get your fresh food as it comes off the grill not overcooked, but just perfectly doled out to you as you eat. read more

the service was horrible on 8/3/24 . They served three parties that came in after my party , server Hanna basically left us didn't care to check on us . When we finally received our drinks 45 minutes later still after the other parties got their soup n salad before we got our drinks . Our waters was warm and didn't have ice in them . My boyfriend and I came here for my birthday, and since it was just us two we decided to sit at a regular table. The sushi was absolutely amazing, some of the best nigiri I've had in Ann Arbor. However, we also decided to get hibachi and I felt like it was just very average. Wasn't in love with the fried rice, but the veggies and chicken were very good. I got fillet and chicken and felt like some of the fillet pieces were a little fatty? overall I felt like I just had a pretty average experience, would definitely be back to get some more sushi! read more

Came here with some friends as this is their favorite sushi place. I wasn't so sure about it based on some more recent reviews as my friends had almost exclusively had takeout and it seemed dine in lately hadn't been good, but the places I was more interested in, they'd been to and hadn't liked. Ichiban was okay. Service wasn't terrible, but wasn't outstanding either. Same for the food too; not bad by any means (except the miso which had a strange flavor I could not place), just alright. The special roll we got was the stand out, but not necessarily worth the price. Not really a place I'd be interested in going back to, but I'm not upset I went. read more

I've been here probably ten times now and I've never been impressed with the service. Expect to stand by the door for at least 10 minutes while everyone aggressively avoids looking at you (it happens every single time), and once you get to your table, be prepared to wait there too. The thing is, I understand slow service when places are busy, but this happens even on super slow nights. They really just don't emphasize service at all. Let it be known, though, that once they do arrive, the servers are friendly. The food is ok. I've never been blown away, and it certainly doesn't compare to other similar restaurants. The primary reason for my low rating is that this place is WAY overpriced for what you get. Especially drinks - $8 for a BOTTLE of beer? Am I on an airplane? For real, y'all, just get some grocery store sushi and buy a 6-pack at the store - you'll spend way less and get better quality food (and 600% more beer). read more

Heard no response... clearly they don't care, even if you spend $$$ I dinned at your Ann Arbor/ ypsi location on 4/1/2 The following is a list of issues we had during our over 2 hour time there: - the host attempt to sit us at an already full hibachi table, we ended up moving because there was absolutely no room for all 12 adults. - The waitress came, I do not remember her name, She took our alcoholic beverage and it took 40-50 mins for us to get our drinks. - Prior to our alcoholic beverages arriving we got our miso soup., which was about 20/30 mins after our drink order was placed. - After about 40mins, someone from my party went up to the bar and asked(and could clearly see the beverages sitting there) and she said they were coming. She came maybe 10-15mins later with them. When the beverages arrived many were watered down or flat. When someone told the waitress the beer was flat, she was rude and told him she had just opened it. You know when beer is flat. - One of my friend's had an appetizer and asked the waitress if they could check on it, as it had been almost an hour. The waitress responded she didn't know when she would be able too, because she was busy. - At this point it had been over 50 mins, we had no salads, had not seen our waitress. We were all extremely frustrated as we seen other hibachi tables get seated, drinks, soup/salad, and their chief come out who were seated significant after us. At this point, I asked one of the workers clearing plates for a manager. I told the manager about how long the drinks too, seeing others get their food, and we had somewhere to be in an hour. She said she would check but her attitude was very rude. As just provided an excuse why people after us got their food who were seated significantly after us. - Our salads came out shortly after, the hibachi chief came out about 7:10. When he arrived I reminded him of shellfish allergies we had at the table and the waitress stated in a rude tone that it was written on the sheet. Those who have allergies, like to confirm due to getting very sick. I also wanted to make sure he knew as clearly this waitress was proving not to be good at her job. - We were done with our hibachi meal. But none of us enjoyed it because we were irritated by the horrible services before he arrived. The chief was good but we felt irritated by everything prior and rushed due to having to be somewhere. - Then they came out to do my birthday thing. Honestly, we didn't want that because we had a reservation we had to go too. The manager attempted to make up for their mistake by giving everyone dessert but it came 10-15 mins after my birthday dessert. We all just wanted to leave to make our reservation. Honestly, we would have rather had our drinks comped or money off our bills then some dessert we didn't eat as our frustrations and irritation kept rising, as we were worried about making our reservation for the next thing. - When our hills arrived many of us were irritated that a 18% charge was added for a tip, as we felt she did not deserve that due to never being there. Those were just the big things that happened during our dine in experience. I feel it was unacceptable that it took 40-50 mins for alcoholic beverages to arrive. I found it unacceptable how they handled it when concerns were brought up, as we spent a significant amount of money total (90-110 dollars per a couple, this restaurant easily made well over 500 from my group). When we were leaving we seen a party, our size, get drinks, soup/salad, and their chief come out all with in an hour. Clearly it was a time management issue on the waitress part of someone else, regardless its unacceptable. read more

All sushi rolls and occasionally sushi entrees are 50% off at dinner as a general rule here. That is a steal! I saw this deal on Ichiban's windows in passing when reviewing Dynasty Buffet and told my mother (my main sushi partner in crime) we had to check this place out. I figured even if it was less than stellar now was the time to find out. Hallelujah! The sushi here is good for the price. Fresh and decently prepared if you are not super picky. I had my fave Chirashi as did my mother my mother for a mere 8 bucks apiece during an October special! It was a deep square bowl full of a variety of perfect fish, shrimp, crunchy veggies, that fabulous egg omelet and utterly perfect sushi rice. No lettuce but I kind of liked the switch. The bowls came with smaller bowls of nice enough miso soup and really good salad. We sipped nice hot cups of green tea that were ok. I have had much better tea and I prefer having a pot to share. It's a minor complaint though. I am a tea person. I returned for the Love Boat. Mmmm all I had hoped for. We had six different types of sashimi (three pieces of each type), 10 different hand rolls, two regular combo rolls (a deluxe type eel and a california roll) and one specialty roll which was the special of the day I think. The specialty roll was a tempura shrimp roll covered in spicy tuna and two sauces, it was honestly to die for. We also got the miso soup, which was better this time, and the excellent salad. So much food and such great prices. A head's up, on weekend nights they are hopping, I would suggest making a reservation if you are going on the weekend. We returned again and again for some special rolls. We like the Happy Dragon roll and the Ichiban roll, mostly as my mother is adoring crunchy and both these rolls feature a center of tempura shrimp. We really have liked the Firehouse roll, the Ann Arbor roll, the MI roll, the Dynamite roll, the Red Dragon, the Lobster Tempura and the Volcano roll. We also like the basic rolls, Philadelphia roll as my mom needs her cream cheese fest, Spicy Crispy Tuna roll and Tempura Shrimp rolls are all stellar choices. This is always a bargathon and is therefore my go to place for sushi. Cheap! Gosh that makes me happy. If knifework bothers you overmuch and you are picky in any way, avoid. If you like sushi regardless and want it at a budget rate then stop in for the cheap thrills. ***UPDATE*** The sushi rolls are now only 30% off which is sad really. :( read more

Ichiban is (still) okay.     Spectacular?  No. Compared to other Teppanyaki Japanese places (out of town), it falls short on the presentation and the 'exotic'...but for the Ann Arbor area...it's about the best for teppanyaki in the area. I have had pretty good luck with the sushi here too. Slightly above average quaility. Not bad.  It's fresh and the evening 30% off sushi is a good deal. I know it's not the most popular choice, but the Uni (sea urchin) at $7.50 for two pieces is a really good price.  The Uni Itself was good.  It's fairly easy to tell 'old' or less than real fresh Uni...and Ichiban did a good job on the Uni and other items from the sushi bar. For the Teppanyaki,  I had the Scallops.  Of course, all of the dinners are preceded by salad salad and soup. The soup is not a miso, but a light onion-y soup.  Salad is great. ..or really the dressing: a delicious, creamy ginger dressing. My scallops were very good. Tasted fresh and a little more generous than expected. I did tell the chef to not 'overcook' them,  but failed to remind him to leave off the sweet soya sauce squirted on.  The sauce isn't bad. It's just that I prefer the scallops without the distraction. Service is okay.  I think it is better to go a bit later in the evening rather than early. Why? Well, if you get there....say at 5:30pm or so...you'll be the only ones there. The downside of that is things just roll too fast: Before you even get your sushi, or your salad/soup, the teppen chef will already be well into the performance.  It's just too rushed. This 4 star rating only applies if the 50% discount on all sushi rolls for dinner applies. I just got back from dinner, my wife and I ordered 8 rolls all the chef's special, one included a lobster roll and one piece actually had part of the lobster tail in it. The Ann Arbor roll and dragon roll were pretty good, just remember this is not Yamato, Ichiban sushi rolls are more dominated by the spicy mayonnaise and tempura not the fish like Yamato. However, with 50% off on all sushi dinner rolls this place is totally worth it. Now if the 50% deal ever disappears, it would be very hard for me to pass up Yamato, or Yotsuba. Two notes, this place wants to be known for their hibachi which is benni hana style where they cook in front of you and the chef entertains you. So this is what they will try to sell you, the hibachi is not bad, but for the price you pay for grilled chicken, beef, or shrimp in some sort of teriaki sauce than by all means, but the best deal by far is the dinner sushi. Another note avoid the Sake bomb its a half a shot of cheap Sake with 5oz of beer $4.745. Much better option would be to get one of their cocktail drinks like a long island or martini for $6.75. read more

Ichiban is similar to most hibachis I've been to in Ohio and Michigan. If you've been to a Benihana or whatever else, this place won't be much different. If you've never been to hibachi, well you need to at least try it once, because it's a lot of fun. THE GOOD The hibachi chefs are a lot of fun here. They had 3 chefs working the day we went and all were very charismatic, did all the fun showy tricks well all love, and were incredibly friendly. The chefs are great with kids too, so that's a plus. The hibachi food tastes pretty much the same here as I've had at any other hibachi in the Midwest. There's a lot of oil and butter and soy sauce. If that sounds like good junk food to you (it does to me!), then you'll love it! If not, then you'll obviously hate the food. My wife got some sushi, I think a Tiger roll, and she quite liked it. THE BAD The prices are kind of high, but I think that's the case at most hibachi. Keep in mind you're not really just paying for quality of food, but also paying for a show. Also, our service was sloooooooooowwwwwwwww. Refills took forever and, well, I expand on this below. THE UGLY 1. Ichiban, what the hell kind of a Spring roll is that?? The "shrimp spring rolles" were nasty rolls filled with 83% grease, 11% nightmares, and 6% shredded cabbage. And it tasted like rotten seaweed. My bar for egg rolls and spring rolls is low. Even when I get bad Chinese takeout, I'm typically like "well at least the egg roll (or spring roll) was good." I even think those terrible egg rolls in the Meijer freezer section aren't bad. So what the hell did you serve me?????????? 2. I ordered my nightmare-garbage spring rolls as an appetizer. To make very clear, I ordered them very shortly after I sat down and at the same time I ordered my drink... It took over 50 minutes for my spring rolls to arrive, even after reminding them during my meal. This means... I GOT MY APPETIZERS AFTER I FINISHED MY MEAL. And to top it all off, as I've mentioned, they were nasty. Looking back, I should've complained then and there, but I had a cabbage Chtulu in my stomach bringing the ruckus, so I just wanted out. BOTTOM LINE If you want hibachi, well, I actually don't think there are many options in the area, so I guess stop by. The chefs are a lot of fun and put on a good show and I thought the hibachi grilled food was par for the course. Service and the worst spring rolls ever bring my rating down quite a bit. Not sure if I'll be back. With so many good food options in Ypsi and AA, it's hard to make a strong case for Ichiban. read more

Really not impressed with this hibachi steakhouse. Came for dinner with my bf and since we are trying this vegetarian thing out, we decided to just get the veggie hibachi. Another family was seated with us about five minutes after we ordered so there was a minor wait but not too bad. When the chef came out, they announced that it was one of their daughters birthdays so he was extremely entertaining. You know the trick where the chef throws a vegetable and you catch it with your mouth? He tried about 5 times with 5 different people and didn't make it once lol. It was actually comical. The food wasn't as entertaining though. The taste just wasn't there for me. I really love hibachi and Japanese food but even the soup had a bit of an aftertaste. The portion size of our vegetables were also disappointing. You would think if you order no meat and just vegetables, that you would get a lot of veggies. Think again. Just not impressed but I would be willing to go again to try the sushi at least! read more

This was my first experience here at Ichiban. We had Dan as our waiter. He was absolutely amazing! Me and my two girlfriends came here and he really boosted our moral. He suggested the angel role and the delicious roll to start. They did not disappoint! When we return next we will definitely be asking to sit in Dan's section. read more

Really great food, but the management is TERRIBLE. My bf and I got turned down by the manager at 2:15pm because they were 'closed' but online it says they stop seating at 2:30pm. He said they close at 2:15pm and refused to take us even when their website was incorrect. AND there were still plenty of people inside eating! He is always SO RUDE! My friends and I have been going there for years and give them great business and leave good tips, but none of that matters to him because good customer service is not something he cares to provide to his regulars. I've even tried leaving him a note asking him to be nicer and he has clearly ignored my advice. I've worked as a waitress for almost 3 years, and I know this is not how you treat customers. It's my mom's birthday today & she wanted Hibachi. We have always liked Ichiban in the past with few issues. I understand it's a holiday weekend and looked busy when we picked up take out. The food was absolutely delicious as always! The portion sizes were huge and we really enjoyed it! My mom did get an eggshell in her fried rice, but she saw it before she ate it and things like that happen. When I called to place an order I was put on hold for over 10 minutes suspecting they forgot about me so I hung up and called again and they helped me right away. I get it, things are busy & the phone are ringing more than ever with take out. No judging on any of those things. I will point out the largest issue we had was actually their menu. Their seafood combo says salmon, shrimp & scallops. My dad ordered it and got lobster, shrimp & scallops, which is fine! The thing is, the rest of us would have ordered that and it's more expensive so Ichiban would have gotten more revenue from our order had their menu been correct online (in the middle of a pandemic when things are closed and people rely on the menu!) So that was really the largest complaint we had because the menu should be updated during this time more than ever. We loved what we got and all of us enjoyed the food, but we would have spent more money to get the seafood combo if the menu listed is came with lobster, not salmon as we eat salmon pretty regularly and love lobster. My suggestion is to whoever manages the website to make sure the menu is always updated to date. Prices would have been nice. Also, an online ordering option would probably take a load off your staff and wasting time tied up to phones. Bad business management in that aspect since this should have been implemented in March and I'm shocked the menu and prices still aren't updated 6 months later... On New Years Eve, we joined my mother for dinner and Ichiban was her choice. The day before we made a reservation and I'm glad we did because the place was packed! We arrived a little too early, so while waiting for our spot at the hibachi grill we grabbed a drink at the bar. My mom and I both got the Lychee martini and boy that thing was delicious. Bartender was not light handed with the vodka, thankfully, and poured each drink to the rim of the martini glass which was pretty impressive. He was also super friendly. My boyfriend got the Kirin Ichiban beer and you get a huge bottle that practically fills two glasses for $7.50. It was time to sit at the hibachi table and upon arrival were greeted warmly by our waiter. My mother and I mimicked each other again and we both got the Filet Mignon and Lobster hibachi while the boyfriend had the scallop and shrimp. Before the grill master comes out to cook your meal you are served miso soup and a salad. Miso soup was pretty tasty and I loved the dressing on the salad. They need to bottle that and sell it to the masses. But, on the menu it said you get two pieces of appetizer sushi, which never came and I think it being on the menu is a mistake. Grill master came out and did his whole show with lighting the grill on fire to clean it and the weird plastic chicken laying eggs. First came the fried rice, which was great, then he started cooking the meat and seafood. Next time, I'll order steak because you get soooo much more steak than you do filet mignon. My filet and lobster were cooked well, but everything came together with the Yum Yum sauce because I can't get enough of it. My mom and boyfriend really liked their meal too. The only negative about this experience was how much I paid for my meal. $29 was the ticket price for the filet and lobster which seemed a bit too high based on portion price. So, if you come here, be prepared to drop a pretty penny, unless unlike me you're cool with chicken hibachi which is much cheaper. read more

Ichiban is such a nest restaurant to visit if you're looking for a good time and some laughs! I visited last week with my boyfriend and a friend from college on Sweetest Day. We asked for the hibachi seating. Basically, you can get regular restaurant seating which is specifically for individuals ordering straight from the kitchen. You can also get hibachi seating, which is a bunch of stools at a bar surrounding a hibachi flat top grill. This may mean that there will be strangers sitting with you, but the environment is so friendly and exciting that eventually everyone is having a great time together! We all placed our orders. For starters, we each got a small bowl of miso soup (rather bland, but still tasty) and a small salad with a seemingly mayonnaise based dressing. My boyfriend and friend got chicken and steak hibachi. It looked fantastic. The grill chef wheels out a cart full of sauces, rice, protein, and vegetables all ready to be stir fried to perfection. The chef lights the stove on fire and it blazes fiercely before your eyes. It's so thrilling. He flips his spatula and plays tricks with the eggs before cracking them. My favorite part was when he stacked the onion rings and lit them on fire. You are truly paying for both delicious food and awesome chef skills. He made stir fried rice which was so delicious. My boyfriend allowed me to try some of his food, and the chicken was probably the best I've ever had at a hibachi grill. The steak was a bit too tough, but they have you request it a level lower than you generally get it because it's cooked at such a high temperature. I'd like to recommend asking for it to be two levels lower than your usual request, because it still gets quite cooked through. The vegetables were, of course, lovely. I personally ordered two veggie rolls. It had cucumber, carrot, pickled radish, and asparagus in it. It came with a helping of ginger and wasabi. It was quite good, and was 20% off as well! I could have eaten a third roll, because they are rather small (but cut into quite large pieces). Started with drinks at the bar where CHELSEA welcomed us and suggested we started with sake bombs! Fun way to start the night. She offered great drink suggestions. My drink she had a special touch "just for the bride" with three fruit rings. Once we sat at the table Aly our server was great with our large party of 16 and separate checks. The food was great.
