    The restaurant

After a long day at Seaworld on a sunny day and holiday weekend we stopped by to this cute little sushi restaurant. Honestly as a first time here service was lovely and friendly. The sweet lady told about which sushi rolls were on happy hour also which one is most popular and who doesn't love happy hour!? I honestly can say this is budget friendly as well. So we got of course the basic cali rolls, tiger roll, miso soup and shogun bento box. Presentation was really good!! The older lady brought us our drinks and honestly i wanted to hug her she was so adorable. All in all please come out and try it out! We came from Riverside County. I honestly give it 10/10! Please be nice as well.

Ichiban has been serving Hillcrest for decades, and I've been coming here for years. The women running the show are absolute legends and the hardest working ladies in the business, always friendly, and somehow keep everything moving fast no matter how busy it gets. The interior is cozy in that old-school, neighborhood way. You don't come here for flash, you come here because it's consistently good. Sushi is always fresh, always on point, and over the years they've quietly expanded the menu in the best way. The ramen sets? Legit comfort food status, perfect for when you want something hearty to go with your rolls. Places like Ichiban are what keep this neighborhood alive! Unpretentious, reliable, and run with heart. Hillcrest just wouldn't feel the same without it. Welp onto the next!

Felt really ripped off after ordering delivery and did not enjoy the food. The stamina udon was super bland. For $20, it had one piece of shrimp tempura that was all breading, a couple tiny pieces of chicken, one piece of broccoli, and a couple wontons that had disintegrated. The bento was equally bad. A tiny paper-thin piece of salmon, some dumplings that were just mush, and a tiny bit of chicken that was so drenched in sauce it was inedible.

This is my hole in the wall sushi spot that I come to every Friday after work as my treat. The owners are so kind and attentive, they have a real attention to their service they provide and are consistent. Sushi is amazing and made fresh. I almost don't want to hype it up too much because I wasn't to keep it all to myself, but alas they are TOO GOOD. I love it here, this is my favorite sushi in all of San Diego.

Solid spot. Nothing fancy. But I was super full for less than $20 which is more than I can say for most places in SD these days. They have a great happy hour for alcohol and rolls from 4-8 every day. I had a jumbo roll (chicken katsu) and a salmon roll. The perfect mini portion of katsu and a tasty salmon roll. You do order from the counter and they give you a number. The drink cups are disposable for the most part. And extra ginger or spicy mayo will cost you .50. So, they've done the math. They were playing FX on the TVs. Fancy it is not, but it does have its own charm. But great value sushi.

Unless you sit outside and people watch, there is really no ambience to speak of. But the two women who take your order and serve you are the best. The value is also amazing. My husband and I had three large drinks - 1 sake and 2 large beers, the stamina udon, two sushi rolls for $50! The stamina udon was good not great but perfect for the rainy day and it was a treasure trove of goodies. Slurpy noodles, dashi broth, fish cake, shrimp, chicken, dumplings. The spicy tuna was incredible. We are definitely going back. Forgot to mention, Happy Hour every night from 4-8 pm.

The good: they're quick, friendly, and they have a good happy hour menu from 4-8pm that's quite affordable. They're a neighborhood staple. The bad: the sushi here really doesn't taste all that great. I wish I could review it higher because of the nice staff and cheap prices, but I can't justifiably leave a 4 star for food that doesn't taste very good. The spicy chicken teriyaki bowl is better than the sushi rolls at least. Realistically, despite the lower review I'd still probably to-go food from here in a crunch.

The food was not only super tasty but very well priced. I got two rolls on happy hour (4-8pm) for about $14 dollars and it was super filling as well. The service was very friendly and quick. Parking is street parking but weekdays aren't too difficult to find parking. It's a little small inside but there is outdoor seating. Will be coming back!

No-frills sushi spot for a good price. They have happy hour on drinks and food 4-8pm daily. I got two rolls for $16 and left full. We ordered at the counter and had our food delivered to our table. The staff was friendly and efficient. They have indoor and outdoor seating, the ambiance is nothing special.

When you only ate somewhere once but they remember you that makes you want to keep coming back! One big draw for me is the kids meal and options/service for kids. If a kid is under 7 they don't charge for them to split your meal with you and they can still get their own soup bowl and chair. Also, they have a kids meal option for 10 and under. My kids absolutely love being treated like real customers. They get to cook their own food and the team addresses them kindly and tends to them. By the nature of this type of meal there is a decent amount of checking in the waitstaff has to do like adjusting cook temps, delivering plates and drinks, coming back for add ons etc so it is a good restaurant experience for kids. They even have high high chairs (not a typo) for the babies. The food is good. Everything is prepped to order... you can literally see people slicing your meat or putting your vegetables together in the back. I come here because I want quality and not the volume of an ACYE place. I'd prefer to spend my calories wisely. I was surprised that it was full but no wait on a weekday. It's hard to find somewhere with a vibe on a weekday but this place has one. It's a short drive from the zoo and Balboa park so I'm sure the team will see us again.

We walked in around 12:40 without a reservation. They close at 2:30, but we were still seated pretty quickly. Every employee we interacted with was genuinely friendly. The service never felt rushed even though we came close to close. I also had no idea we walked in during their "US Hour" from 12:00 to 2:30, so that ended up being a nice surprise. They offer $7 draft beers, $9 wine, $10 mimosas, plus a handful of bites for $9. We started with the Fried Calamari Tentacles from the US Hour menu. They're served with Japanese mayo, although it tasted like there was some citrus mixed in because it had a nice tangy kick. Whatever it was, it worked really well with the crispy calamari. To drink, I ordered the Yuzu Matcha Mimosa. It had a really vibrant green color that almost reminded me of green juice. I actually enjoyed it. The matcha flavor came through without getting lost. My friend wasn't the biggest fan because they thought it leaned a little too bitter, so I think this one depends on how much you already enjoy matcha. For my entree, I ordered the Duck and Waffles ($24), which comes with crispy duck confit, a waffle, passionfruit guava sauce, and chili crunch. This was easily the highlight of the meal. The duck was cooked perfectly. It was crispy on the outside, tender inside, and seasoned just enough to let the meat shine. I also appreciated that the chili crunch actually had some heat instead of just being there for texture. The waffle was light and fluffy. I'm a sucker for sweet and savory combinations, so the powdered sugar paired with the rich duck was enough to win me over. The passionfruit guava sauce was the only part I wasn't completely sold on. It wasn't bad by any means. I just think it's one of those flavors that comes down to personal preference. This ended up being one of those meals that reminded me why I keep a running list of places I want to try. Great food. Great service. A fun happy hour that I accidentally stumbled into. My only wish is that parking in North Park was a little easier, but that's just part of the neighborhood. I'd definitely come back.

I watched the table carefully pick around this one lone barely sugared piece. Ngl, I like the ones at Disneyland better. Both me and a daughter ordered the Chunky Avocado Toast with a poached egg, we both felt that the toast was a little tough. Good avocado spread and the egg oozed well. I tried their house hot sauce with it but wasn't too impressed with it. I also ordered a side of the House Potatoes. These were awesome. Crisp outside but not over done , well seasoned. Totally recommend. Wife ordered the Mushroom Chazuke. Mix of seasonal mushrooms. She liked it a lot. Tastes some of the mushrooms. Earthy but not overbearingly so. The wild rice and poached egg made for a pretty good mix. Other daughter got the Curry Hamburg. She likes her curry, especially Japanese curry. While she did not get transported to Tokyo she did give it a thumbs up. This place is pretty busy and I was fairly impressed with the attentiveness of our waitress. Waters kept full which was handy as it was a bit hot and my car was a good walk away. Would like to visit again and try other menu items.

We've been coming here since their soft opening and have visited several times over the past year, and every visit reminds us why we keep coming back. We were seated immediately at the bar, even without a reservation (though I'd definitely recommend making one, as it's been quite busy on previous visits). Sitting at the bar ended up being one of the highlights of the evening because we got to chat with the chefs, including the owner and head chef, Aries. We started with the miso soup, which was delicious, followed by the salmon crispy rice and a selection of sashimi. Everything was outstanding, but the salmon crispy rice has officially become our go-to appetizer. If it's your first visit, don't skip it! For our main course, we ordered the nigiri sampling, which included bluefin tuna, yellowtail, salmon, and two chef's choice pieces. After our sashimi course, Aries asked which fish stood out the most. We both immediately said the bluefin tuna, and he customized our order of nigiri such that the chef's choice selections were centered around that. One piece was toro belly (which I happily let my fiancée enjoy since that's her favorite), and the other was a marinated bluefin tuna that was one of the best bites I've had. Aries even took the time to show us how the tuna was cut and prepared, which made us appreciate the craftsmanship behind every piece even more. When he asked how we liked the chef's choice, we each admitted we wished we could have tried the other's piece. To our surprise, and without hesitation, he prepared two more so we could both experience each one. That level of hospitality and genuine enthusiasm is something you simply don't find everywhere. This is a sushi lover's dream. It's obvious that Aries and his team aren't just running a restaurant, but rather, they're passionate about the art of sushi, and that passion comes through in every interaction and every bite. Hillcrest is incredibly lucky to have a place like Dashi. We already know we've been a few times before but we know we'll be back many more times, and I can't recommend it highly enough.

Honestly, the way he spoke to me and looked at me genuinely scared me. After we sat down, I turned to my friend and said, "I'm scared of him." I rushed through the menu and ordered the first thing I saw because I just wanted to get away from the counter. I've been here before, and I loved the food. In fact, that's exactly why we came back. Service was ok, they were attentive but definitely slow getting the bill and that awkwardness of them hovering as they hand you the machine to pay with your card and the screen shows the tip. it's like ugh they are standing there starring kind of makes you feel awkward. :: ORDER :: MISO SOUP ($4.50) - nothing special about their miso soup and feel it's a dollar more than many other average sushi restaurants. I did like gave more tofu in their soup. RECOMMEND ULTIMATE HAMACHI ($19.00) - Salmon, avocado and cucumber. Topped w/ Yellowtail, fresh lemon slices, and ponzu. I was told this was one of the two most popular/ordered rolls off the menu. I was thinking this was going to be a very creamy roll with a splash of citrus and would love it but the yellowtail fell below standard for me. Although the piece of yellowtail is small and on top of the sushi resting underneath the lemon slices - towards the middle of eating roll the yellowtail seemed to have a subtle fishy taste for my liking (yellow tail should not be fishy). Perhaps it was the quality of the fish or what but something abut it wasn't it. You won't notice if you are dunking your rolls in soy sauce or letting the lemon slices hide the flavor but I was able to taste it. I ended up plucking the yellowtail off of my rolls and the rolls were up to standard as what I was expecting... creamy with a splash of citrus, that told me that the yellowtail was def off the night I ate there. I'm sure I'd be back but not in a rush. There are many other restaurants to be had. Until the next review...
