I'm always interested in quality sushi joints that aren't so expensive you can't take a child and stayed alert for a chance to visit. I went with my mom for a quick Monday lunch before she dropped me off for vision correction surgery (which makes Akinori one of the last places I wore glasses). We only had about forty-five minutes, and this was just enough time for a light meal at the sushi bar. The restaurant was small and casual, and we opted to sit at the counter. There were a few other customers, and service was friendly and timely, but not fast. The chefs were skillful and deliberate, and they made delicious sushi. We started with snow crab sunomono, a nice light appetizer of vinegary cucumber and seaweed with a few meaty hunks of sweet crab. Then we got some nigiri: red snapper, black snapper, and tuna sets, which came with akami, toro takuan, ootoro, maguro zuke, and seared ootoro. Every piece was fantastic, the fish fresh, the nigiri delicatelly formed. Finally, I couldn't resist the maximalist Akinori roll, with spicy shrimp and langostino rolled with rice in soy paper, possibly tempura fried, then topped with spicy tuna, eel sauce, spicy mayo, chives, and tobiko. I love an over-the-top spicy-tuna-centric roll, and this one was deeply satisfying. Akinori also does ramen and teriyaki and offers a bunch of reasonable lunch specials. You can eat here pretty cheap, or spend as much as you desire on good quality nigiri. I live almost 20 miles from Pasadena, but I hope to visit this place again.

We got the Cantonese Cured Meat with Steamed Rice Clay Pot and the Coconut Soup with Silke Chicken. The Cured Meat was tasty, and I like that you get some gai lan with it. The soup wasn't really my taste, but it did taste warm and nourishing. I got the Daily Combo Special which comes with an Omelet Curry Rice, Tonkatsu or Chicken Katsu and an iced lemon tea or soda. Not too bad considering a long line start forming outside. If you enjoy sushi hand rolls, KazuNori is the place to be. The design inside is very nice. Feels calm and the lighting was just right. Got their 6-hand roll set menu which included toro, yellowtail, salmon, bay scallop, crab, and lobster hand rolls. Can't go wrong with either one. All of them were fresh and delicious nicely prepared. Each bite of these hand rolls was satisfying to say the least. The staff were friendly refilling my water and asking if I needed anything from time to time. Really enjoyed coming here. Price isn't so bad also. Great experience and will definitely come again.

Large tender pieces of roasted Fresh Water Eel that are so tasty. Then it was on to the House Salad and Miso Soup. The salad is a mix of greens dressed with a light, sweet Vinaigrette. The Miso is so good here. Lots of Tofu and Seaweed is a super flavorful broth.....hot and delicious. My entree selection was the Chirashi Bowl....an assortment of Sashimi (Ahi, Albacore, Mackerel, Octopus, Sea Breen and Tamago) over a bed of Sushi Rice. All of the Sashimi was very fresh and super tender. AnneMarie got the 3 Hand Roll Lunch, and she thoroughly enjoyed it. She got a Spicy Yellowtail, a Spicy Salmon and a Scallop Hand Roll which she raved about. This was my 3rd visit to Yui and I have been super impressed with everything so far but this time our service was not the greatest. She was not very attentive and kind of had an attitude. They have several different chirashi options (by price) and I got the middle one ($50). The fish was super fresh and the rice was excellent. Very happy to have this place in downtown Sierra Madre.
