I was really happy to see a true Japanese restaurant in San Marino! Not known for its restaurants, this restaurant is a highlight for San Marino residents. I chose the cold soba and tempura, with mackerel sushi on the side. Something I noticed is this restaurant does not have any odors of deep frying or fish. As a first-time visit, I really enjoyed my time here and would bring friends or relatives to dine on authentic Japanese food. The servers are mindful and watch for anything they can help with and paid special attention to my needs. The ambiance is totally Japanese and not a fusion restaurant. Next time, I'll bring the wife, who enjoys Japanese food at a reasonable price.

Masamitsu is truly a true gem for the city of San Marino. Everything from the service to the sashimi is truly exceptional. Prices are reasonable and all their fish are so fresh! Great Sake selection and a great restaurant for dining! Beautiful decor as well! The bill for 2 with tips came out to about $500 so I was very pleased. I had such a great time! Can't wait to be back!

Came here for lunch and sat at the sushi bar. Been wanting to try this place for a while so glad I was able to stop by after running errands in that area. The ambiance is really nice in there, clean and spacious. Nice soothing music in the background made the experience pretty enjoyable. Food I came for lunch and decided to order off of the sushi menu rather than getting omakase or lunch specials, wasn't really feeling cut rolls or soups. The selections included: kinmedai, kanpachi, maguro, chutoro, salmon, unagi, halibut, scallop, Santa Barbara Uni. I also ordered a tofu dish, garlic edamame, and chicken karage for side dishes. Overall, all the sushi was amazing except for the chutoro which was super chewy, probably due to connective tissue. All the sides were delicious, I'd probably skip the tofu dish as there wasn't much flavor. They also had Suntory Premium on tap, which was a nice pairing. Service was on point, from the waiters to the sushi chef cutting the fish in front of me. Every time I would finish a piece of sushi the chef would start preparing the next one, they go according to your eating speed.

My aunt treated us to their omakase and ordered some other dishes as well. It was a delicious experience, but one that lasted a little too long. Dinner ended up being 3.5 hours long because they were short two sushi chefs, which apparently they did notify her in advance but it's still crazy how there was an hour of almost no courses in between. The server didn't really check up on us in between either until we asked another server and she mistakenly told us that all the courses had arrived. An almost four hour dinner with twin toddlers meant a lot of whining, wanting to get out of their booster chairs because the restaurant ran out of highchairs, one broken plate, and a lot of running around. Also, dinner was so long that they got hungry again so we had to feed them again towards the end. Thankfully we brought enough snacks and we had a private room, otherwise they wouldn't have lasted. I did see a lot of other children eating here so it seems popular with families, BUT there's no diaper changing station in either of the gender neutral restrooms so we had to take our kids out to the car to change their diapers. I enjoyed everything in the omakase, and the tempura and clams in broth were also good. All the sushi tasted fresh and the uni was delicious! The only thing I didn't enjoy was the crab croquettes that weren't part of the omakase. I didn't really taste any crab and it was mostly cream. I only managed to take pictures of one course because, you know, twin toddlers.

This place is actually a hidden gem! I love that this sushi restaurant is on the higher end, where you get better quality, fish, but expect to pay a premium for it. It's not going to cost you an arm and a leg, but it is comparable to the more quality sushi restaurants out in the SGV. There is plenty of parking in the back, and getting to the restaurant is fairly simple. I didn't have any issues finding a seat, but if you're looking for an omakase experience, it is recommended that you book a reservation. The service is pretty good, they were very accommodating, and the fish was delicious! I love that they deep-fried the sweet shrimp head. The ambience is fairly chill, it is very intimate, so you can come for any occasions, for fun, or whatever it is. They have a very seasonal menu, so they have whatever that can be flown in fresh.

Very nice mom n pop Japanese cuisine restaurant. Offers a sushi bar, dine-in and large room for levers parties. The fish is very fresh, although pricier than I like, the rolls and garlic edamame were also very good! Our waiter was very attentive of our behavior from the get go and played right along with our mood! He was great! Overall, I love this restaurant and you should give it a try!

Customer service was very prompt and welcoming. Dining ambience was peaceful and chill; they were playing Studio Ghibli soundtrack songs at one point which was a serene vibe. The Chirashi Regular dish I tried was fresh and delicious, would recommend especially at a reasonable $30 price point for the size and quality. In each spoonful, their Lychee Sorbet dessert was delish, creamy and a bright sweetness; refreshing treat after a meal. Minus 1 star for the Miso Soup - it was sadly lacking in miso flavor. Everything else was fantastic, but this restaurant just needs to improve their Miso Soup.

Haven't updated my review since my first dining experience, but my husband and I have been dining here for about two years now and Masamitsu is our favorite restaurant to eat sushi / Japanese cuisine. It's consistently good and the costs are quite reasonable which we love. We absolutely love everyone who works here, especially my girl, Mia, Chef Ken and Chef Brent. 10/10 recommend!

Stumbled across this gem on Huntington drive in San Marino. What a nice surprise! Love the food! Fresh ingredients! Pretty plating. Inside decor is calming and zen. I also love the cute mini fresh floral arrangement on each table. Black cod miso portion is a bit small so be aware. May need to order more dishes. Rice portion is ok though. The Chirashi regular is good portion, has scallops too. Also good selection and variety of sashimi. Check in on yelp and get a free dessert. We got a lychee sorbet. Service is friendly and attentive.

Beautiful ambiance and a cozy atmosphere. My s/o and I sat at the sushi bar and ordered two sashimi sets, a bluefin tuna bowl, fried squid, and ikura sushi - yes, we were pretty hungry! The fish quality was decent, and we left satisfied. Service was excellent. The lady even offered a small basket for my purse, which was a nice touch. The only downside was the ikura. It clearly wasn't marinated in-house, even though we were told it was. I've worked at a few high-end sushi restaurants before, and you can always tell when ikura is marinated properly - it has a richer flavor and a darker color. This one seemed straight out of the package, which was a bit disappointing.

3.4/5 stars food- best thing is the treasure box. I'll mainly come back for this because of its simplicity and freshness. an exquisite treat! Tempura eel was not very fresh. Can also taste the batter inside the fish. Lunch sashimi was not memorable. service- alright ambiance- my second favorite part of this restaurant. Felt comfortable in the clean, modern ambiance when seated. Not noisy too, a peaceful environment.

What a gem for those who appreciate high-quality sushi in an elegant, fun, understated atmosphere. Every bite of the omakase was fresh, beautifully presented and delicious. The ambiance was both upscale and relaxed, with clean lines and soft lighting. Service was attentive, though a little inconsistent due to the large, rowdy party seated at the bar. Prices were definitely on the higher end, but the quality mostly justifies it. I can't remember the names of the omakase dishes but I do remember that was a great spot for a sushi date night.

The chef hands each roll to you individually and you're expected to eat it immediately to ensure the seaweed is crisp and the rice is warm. I'm always interested in quality sushi joints that aren't so expensive you can't take a child and stayed alert for a chance to visit. I went with my mom for a quick Monday lunch before she dropped me off for vision correction surgery (which makes Akinori one of the last places I wore glasses). We only had about forty-five minutes, and this was just enough time for a light meal at the sushi bar. The restaurant was small and casual, and we opted to sit at the counter. There were a few other customers, and service was friendly and timely, but not fast. The chefs were skillful and deliberate, and they made delicious sushi. We started with snow crab sunomono, a nice light appetizer of vinegary cucumber and seaweed with a few meaty hunks of sweet crab. Then we got some nigiri: red snapper, black snapper, and tuna sets, which came with akami, toro takuan, ootoro, maguro zuke, and seared ootoro. Every piece was fantastic, the fish fresh, the nigiri delicatelly formed. Finally, I couldn't resist the maximalist Akinori roll, with spicy shrimp and langostino rolled with rice in soy paper, possibly tempura fried, then topped with spicy tuna, eel sauce, spicy mayo, chives, and tobiko. I love an over-the-top spicy-tuna-centric roll, and this one was deeply satisfying. Akinori also does ramen and teriyaki and offers a bunch of reasonable lunch specials. You can eat here pretty cheap, or spend as much as you desire on good quality nigiri. I live almost 20 miles from Pasadena, but I hope to visit this place again.

The highlight here is definitely the quality of the Wagyu. The experience leans more toward a curated meat tasting, with beautifully presented, juicy cuts that are satisfying without being overwhelming. Even with two 16-year-old boys at the table, everyone left full -- which says a lot. That said, I took one star off because the setup feels more like a traditional restaurant than a true omakase experience. Since you're seated at tables, there's a bit of passing plates and bowls back and forth with the server throughout the meal, which slightly interrupts the flow and intimacy you might expect from a classic omakase. If you're looking for a sashimi-focused experience, this isn't that -- it's much more Wagyu-forward. Service was a highlight. Jamie was attentive, warm, and made the experience feel smooth and well-paced. Overall, if you go in expecting a high-quality Wagyu tasting rather than a traditional omakase, this place really delivers. A great Pasadena spot when you want something a little more polished and indulgent.
