The hostess was friendly but her comments about "we are known for a pork broth ramen" when I asked a simple question was unnecessary when she already said it when I walked in. Only thing about the service I did not like. Overall, staff were very friendly and nice. Onto the food, I got vegetarian ramen bowl as is and didn't make any changes. According to the staff, they don't normally make vegetarian in Japan locations but do in Brooklyn/USA. Ramen was flavorful, spicy, and so good! 10/10, I'd definitely go back. I love that the ambiance ensure that the Japanese tradition and culture are visible. My friend moved very proximate to this place, we were driving by and there was no line, which is a rarity, so we seized the opportunity. When you walk in, you order at a kiosk, they print the receipts, and you are seated either at a booth or a conventional table. There was no wait for the table, so we were able to sit right down. From the outside, the place looks a lot bigger than it actually is.... A lot of the inside space is for waiting room, and when we were leaving, the line was around the block. My friend and I both ordered a matcha tea, mine hot and his iced. The hot tea is half the size of an average small, but I enjoyed it. We also both got the Tonkatsu ramen, mine medium spicy and his not spicy. The ramen is served in a porcelain container which is a nice presentation. The ramen itself is good, although I ordered mine at medium spicy, it was not spicy at all. I asked the server for more spice, and he came over and dumped the whole ramekin in my soup. Thought that was kind've weird, why not give me the little dish and let me add as much as I wanted. Whatever, it was spicier after, which is what I was going for. Such a warm and easy going spot for these cold nights. Ichiran is super famous in Japan, and I'm glad to have one right in our backyard. The ordering is super simple with very little options to choose from. But to be honest, traditional is best here. You order on a screen and can customize your ramen to how you like it- harder noodles, no green onions, etc. But sometimes, if it ain't broke don't fix it. I mostly go with the standard ha! You can sit alone- which is a nice touch. And the servers will give it to you through under a screen. I personally haven't done it yet but it seems like an introverts dream. If you've ever possessed a yearning to consume ramen in a study carrel in industrial East Williamsburg, direct yourself towards Ichiran. Bonus: no tipping allowed!  I was warmly greeted by an employee who asked if it were my first visit and since it was, she showed me how to order and explained other crucial aspects of the restaurant. I found it interesting that even if you're in a group of two or more, you can be seated in the "focus booths." Don't expect a silent library-like atmosphere however. And the tissues on the walls are there for a reason. Ichiran will make your credit card wince; it's kind of expensive. The no real frills classic tonkotsu ramen bowl was $20, and the classic with the recommended topping set was $26.50 and with tax, basically $29. But it seemed like a better deal than getting toppings on their own. It is terrific how you can customize some elements such as broth richness, amount of garlic, and spicy sauce level. Thank goodness the ramen exceeded expectations, whew. When you've finished eating, you can just head out. If you're going to automate the ordering system, you really should invest in iPads at the tables so that people don't have to wait outside. My cousin and I were the first one in line since we got here early and this spot did not disappoint I love how you get to customize your own bowl. I moved to NY 3 weeks ago and I've been to this location every week since. Kind of got obsessed with the traditional tonkotsu experience and the ability to customize your broth. I'm currently up to level 8 on the spice, but realized that increasing the richness and Dashi are necessary to keep the flavor after increasing the spice. Not the BEST ramen I've had, but definitely the best tonkotsu ramen I've had and the ambiance/service makes it even better. It's also expensive so I signed up for the rewards program. This experience allows each diner to have their own small enclosed booth on the left right and in front. No one sees me and I don't see anyone including the chefs. This is my second time at ichiran but first time at this location. I came in on a Friday around 9:40pm. The hostess was nice enough to seat us right before closing. There was also a few other parties waiting to be sat. They have booths and communal tables available for dine in. We sat in the booths that had a removable wall. The food was amazing no complaints on the taste. The noodles are A1!! The only thing is the prices are just too high for the quantity being served. Came with a group of friends and we each had the ramen combo set. They only serve ramen but there was a few options for toppings and flavor that you can customize. Service was sparse and limited but sufficient. They don't accept tips as a rule. The ramen was great. Noodle was well cooked and the tonkatsu soup broth was well balanced. This restaurant comes from Japan, it is authentic and they have the ramen focus booth system which makes for a fun and unique experience. This is a no tip restaurant as well. I got the veggie ramen which was packed with flavor. It had spicy sauce in it which elevated the taste. My boyfriend got the premium yakibuta which was his favorite part of the whole meal. Came here with a friend for some ramen after a long day. We were surprised by how long the line outside was. Thankfully, we were brought in to the much cozier indoor waiting area within 20 minutes and then only had to wait another 10 to get our seats. We opted to sit in the booths for the authentic experience, and man were we blown away. This restaurant has such a great system for ordering and getting refills, a lot of places can learn from them. And the booths felt so incredibly cozy! If you come with a friend you can even sit next to each other and take down the middle wall for a combined booth, which we did. Now let's talk about the food. The ramen itself featured some of the best ramen broth I've ever had, and had a ludicrous amount of toppings for the price. I did pay for extra pork, but it was super worth it as it wasn't such a large fee compared to most places, and they gave like six extra pieces. The bowl looked small at first but was deceptively large. The matcha beer was also very good! Maybe even a little too matcha-y for me but I think many people will like that. One of my favorite ramen places to go to. I usually go to the one in Manhattan, but I was near this location and had to stop in. There is something special about this location compared to the Manhattan locations. The ramen did not disappoint. The broth is flavorful with depth. The chashu was also tasty and cooked perfectly. You can order a basic tonkotsu ramen or have their recommended topping set which includes a soft boiled egg which you crack yourself, extra scallions, extra chashu, seaweed and mushrooms. For the ramen you can customize how you want it from spice and saltiness level and firmness of the noodle. I also ordered an iced matcha green tea. It comes unsweetened, but you can ask for sugar. The matcha pudding is also fantastic. It is light in texture and does not lack in the matcha flavor. When visiting, order at the station first where you pay in advance for what you order. A waste of $60 in cash, a waste of time, a waste of a $50 Lyft ride, a total waste, period. I have visited the Midtown location, and enjoyed it. Knowing this is the original New York City location, I had to try it out. From my experience, it will be the last time. The location is a bit off the beaten path. I would suggest you only come here during daylight hours, despite it only being a five minute walk from the L train. Once you sit, be ready for an uncomfortable experience. The stools are highly uncomfortable, enough to herniate a disk, or give you scoliosis. I am still feeling the pinch 3 hours after I left this restaurant. The soup takes a while to come out. That should not be. The longer ramen sits, the worse it gets. The noodles expand, and all the flavors start to get lost. This is why in Japan, ramen is eaten quickly. You have to get the flavors and noodles spot on before everything disappears, which usually takes about fifteen minutes. That is how long I waited for my ramen, so by doing the math, I had approximately five minutes to enjoy it before the soup loses its value. In a nutshell, here is the food highlights and lowlights. -The noodles are cooked almost perfectly. -The chashu pork is undercooked. -The tea egg is poorly prepared. -The matcha dessert is overpriced and tiny. -Get the extra noodle and meat. Otherwise it is not worth it. Now for my biggest complaint, and nothing was done about it. Near me, I had a family that brought an infant that did nothing but scream and cry during my whole time here. Why are babies allowed here? In my opinion, there are other restaurants to take a newborn, not this one. What can they eat here? Pretty much nothing. I note this because part of the experience of Ichiran is the intimate experience they create that you are supposed to have between you and your ramen. This is why you dine alone. This is why you do not see your wait staff (also why you do not tip). This is why the shade stays closed when you eat. Nothing is supposed to come between you and your ramen. A screaming child takes away the intimate experience that makes eating ramen not like eating "Japanese Pizza". It is supposed to be special, and tasty. This felt like I was getting glorified chicken noodle soup, which is partly why I left the restaurant in disgust and vowed never to return.
